From the Faith Formation Office...
We have moved into our new office across
the hall from our old office. The new office
allows us to better serve our parish families.
The move also allows us to create a new meeting
space not only for faith formation, but for other parish
groups as well. Over the next few months we will be
making improvements to room 4 to make it a more
comfortable meeting space for our ministries to meet
in.
While we are in the middle of winter it is good to look
ahead to summer. Totus Tuus is returning to St. Joseph
the week of July 9-15. We will provide a fun, faith
filled experience for our grade school, junior high and
high school students. Our facilitators are college students and seminarians who spend the summer sharing
this program with various parishes across the country.
We will need two host families for the men and women
who will be our facilitators. If you would like more information please contact Carlo in the Faith formation
office.
This is just a reminder that all tuition should be paid in
full. Reminders were mailed out last week to all families that have not paid their tuition in full and not made
arrangements with the office. Thank you to all families
who have paid their tuition in full.
You can now follow us on Twitter @StJosephAddison
Program reminders and inspirational messages will be
communicated on a regular basis.
Vamos a
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Merry Christmas! Share that cheerful greeting with some folks today. They may wonder if you
have had any Elvis sightings lately, attended Star Trek conventions, or were Cleopatra in a
previous lifetime. Despite the skeptics, today is solidly within the Christmas season. In fact, in
some strands of the Christian tradition it represents the clearest manifestation of the mystery of
the Incarnation. On Christmas Day, for example, the Gospel reading is the Prologue of John's
Gospel, which reveals the glory of Christ shining through our humanity precisely in his baptism.
At any rate, this is an ancient feast, celebrated first in Egypt sixteen centuries ago. More than
most other ancient people, the Egyptians understood the life-giving properties of water. On
this day, they drew water from the Nile, so central in the history of their people, and reserved
it in honor. Many other places copied the custom, so that St. John Chrysostom wrote of people
in Antioch gathering at midnight to collect flowing water into vessels they brought from home
since "today there is a blessing on the water." At home for dinner tonight, decorate the table
with beautiful bowls of water and white candles, toast one another with goblets of sparkling
water, and light a Christmas candle in the window one last time. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Jubilee Year of Mercy
January 10, 2016
Año Jubilar de la Misericordia
10 de enero de 2016
Feast of the Baptism of the Lord
Fiesta del Bautismo del Señor
Fittingly, this Jubilee Year of Mercy is also the
Lectionary’s Year of Luke, for Luke’s Gospel highlights
God’s mercy in finding the lost, healing the sick, restoring the broken, comforting the sorrowful, forgiving
the sinner through Jesus’ ministry. But before doing,
Luke’s Jesus is always praying. As practical moderns
programmed to measure worth by productivity, we
instinctively appreciate the Jubilee’s call to embrace
the practical challenges of our baptism. But today
Luke focuses not on Jesus being baptized, but on Jesus praying after baptism. So must we pray to become the disciples we are called to be, that the Spirit
empower us to do what disciples are called to do.
Imitating Jesus’ openness to the Spirit will enable us to
cooperate with the grace that transforms us into
“beloved sons [and daughters] . . . in whom the Father
is well pleased,” living out, in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the extraordinary potential of our baptism.
