Touchstones
Jesus is about to face the most trying period of
his life in this world: his conviction as a criminal, the walk to Calvary and his subsequent
execution. The events leading up to his crucifixion may have been as painful emotionally as the
dying itself. They include betrayal, misunderstanding, abuse, and desolation. The seeming absence of God the
Father in the most crucial hour of his life must have been excruciating
for one so intimately united to the divine. These experiences deepened
Jesus’ faithfulness and his perseverance in the journey of the Spirit.
He invited the apostles into this profound moment of revelation.
The Transfiguration is an incredible blessing, filling Jesus with the
support, grace, and inspiration he needed to walk those difficult final
days. Jesus is affirmed by the great figures of his tradition, who
represent the law and the prophets. Even though he will be rejected by
the representatives in his day of religious and civil law and the
prophetic tradition, he is held up by the wisdom figures of ancient
times. This illumination will have to carry him through the dark days
of confusion, insecurity, and terror that will begin as soon as he comes
down the mountain.
Each of us needs touchstones or graced memories to return to when
we face the crosses in our journey. These “God-moments” may be
more subtle than a transfiguration on a mountaintop, but their impact
can help sustain us if we recognize them. These touchstone events
may be recalled when we reflect on the ways in which we have been
inspired at other times of trial. Personal “transfigurations” may reveal
themselves when we begin to share our story of struggle and faith.
What has sustained us in trial can continue to do so if we allow
ourselves to savor them later on! God’s revelation continues in each
re-visitation of gratitude and marvel.
Here is list of our current Parish Council
members. Feel free to contact them if you
have questions or concerns about the parish.

The Second Sunday of Lent
A great way to slow down
and meditate on the season of
Lent is to attend the
Spiritual Works of Mercy
During this Year of Mercy, Pope Francis calls
us to practice both the corporal and spiritual
works of mercy. Works of mercy can be directed not only toward the needs of the body,
but the needs of the soul as well. Indeed, the
most serious form of poverty of all can be the
poverty of the spirit, not only because it drains
life of all energy, joy, and sense of purpose, but also because
it is the one kind of poverty that can last forever.
The evangelist Billy Graham tells the story of a private
dinner he shared with one of the wealthiest men in the United
States. During the meal the man confessed that despite
having every good thing money could buy, he was miserable
beyond words. The lesson: money cannot buy happiness. It's
a cliché, but it's true. Clearly, this wealthy gentleman
suffered from moral poverty.

from 2:00pm-4:00pm
Harpist Marsha Long will be playing at
these FREE concerts. For more

Conception at 619-295-4141 or
Marsha at marsha@marshalong.com.
“Lent comes providentially to
reawaken us, to shake us from
our lethargy.” —Pope Francis
Indeed, the human spirit longs for the nourishment of truth,
goodness, and beauty if it is to be healthy and strong and if it
is to grow in sanctification and be prepared for the life to
come.
That's why, in addition to the corporal works or mercy, the
Church has outlined the spiritual works of mercy. Look to
these works as preventative medicine for poverty of the
spirit. The spiritual works of mercy are as follows:
(1) Admonish sinners.
(2) Instruct the uninformed.
(3) Counsel the doubtful.
(4) Comfort the sorrowful.
(5) Be patient with those in error.
(6) Forgive offenses.
(7) Pray for the living and the dead.

This week our first reading shows faith is the
response to the living presence and power of God
in our life. The second reading challenges faithfilled Christians to be Christ-like role models.
The Gospel reveals that conversion to Christ
brings upon us a complete transfiguration.
This week, let others see in you a
transfiguration. By your actions,
show that Christ resides within
you. Make a commitment to serve
joyfully those around you, and
others will notice the radiance and
dazzling brightness that comes
from you. You will bring more people to Christ
by the good fruit you bear.

Care of Retired Priests
When a diocesan priest is ordained, he makes a lifelong
commitment to serve the needs of the faithful in our diocese,
typically serving 40 to 45 years. In return, the diocese makes
a commitment to the priest to provide for his basic well-being
during his lifetime, including retirement.
Everyone is aware of the need to appropriately provide for the
spiritual, material, and medical needs of their senior years. Priests
have the same concerns. They want to have a certain level of
confidence that someone will attend to the nurturing of their faith,
helping them settle in an appropriate physical environment, and
assist them when their bodies or minds decline with the passage
of time. We play an important part in adding to their sense of
security about their senior years.
rely on the Lord and us to sustain them in their senior years. As
age and physical ability permit, they continue to “Hope in the
Lord.” They continue to live a life of prayer and sacramental
participation. They continue to witness the love of God.
The normal retirement age for a priest in our diocese is age 75.
Retirement costs including insurance, healthcare, prescription
drugs, skilled nursing care, and housing and sustenance continue to
escalate. At present,
one-third of our
diocesan priests are
retired.
The Annual Catholic Appeal supports care of retired priests
so that they can live in dignity, and free of anxiety about their
means of support. This includes providing health and auto
insurance, nursing care at Nazareth House San Diego if needed,
supplementing their pension, and covering expenses for them to
attend the annual convocation of priests.
Our retired priests
have a profound trust
in the Lord and His
Holy Mother; they
have a profound trust
in the gratitude and
generosity of the
people of the diocese.

Atención a
Sacerdotes Jubilados
