PARISH INFORMATION 3 PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 15, 2016 [I]n one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. —1 Corinthians 12:13a READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Jas 3:13-18; Ps 19:8-10, 15; Mk 9:14-29 Tuesday: Jas 4:1-10; Ps 55:7-11a, 23; Mk 9:30-37 Wednesday: Jas 4:13-17; Ps 49:2-3, 6-11; Mk 9:38-40 Thursday: Jas 5:1-6; Ps 49:14-20; Mk 9:41-50 Friday: Jas 5:9-12; Ps 103:1-4, 8-9, 11-12; Mk 10:1-12 Saturday: Jas 5:13-20; Ps 141:1-3, 8; Mk 10:13-16 Sunday: Prv 8:22-31; Ps 8:4-9; Rom 5:1-5; Jn 16:12-15 TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Filled with the Holy Spirit, the apostles begin to speak in tongues (Acts 2:1-11). Psalm — Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth (Psalm 104). Second Reading — In one Spirit we are baptized into one body and given to drink of one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13) or Romans 8:8-17. THE FULLNESS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT The church wakes up to an amazing message this morning. Look around and see who has been called. Listen to the voices of those who proclaim Jesus is Lord. You’ll find no race of people left out; you’ll find no language on earth unfit to proclaim the glory of God. We call Pentecost Sunday the “birthday of the church.” In many ways, the church is still being born. Only when we all know the peace Jesus offered in today’s Gospel will we really know the fullness of the Holy Spirit. St. Paul assures us in today’s second reading that “all of us have been given to drink of the one Spirit.” When we look around us in the church we should see everyone. But we don’t. Not yet. What is holding us back from fully embracing the one Body of Christ? When will we see our differences as manifestations of the same Holy Spirit? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. LOS SIETE DONES DEL ESPÍRITU Sabiduría, inteligencia, consejo, fortaleza, ciencia, piedad y temor de Dios. 4 Gospel — Jesus Christ appears to the disciples and sends them on their mission with the power to forgive or retain sins through the Holy Spirit (John 20:19-23) or John 14:15-16, 23b-26. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY Announcing the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis challenged us to proclaim God’s mercy “to everyone without exception . . . again and again, with new enthusiasm and renewed pastoral action” (Misericordiae Vultus, 12). Pentecost proclaims that the door locked for fifty days is thrown open at last. No longer closed in on itself, the community speaks to crowds from different backgrounds, distant lands, exotic languages. Everyone hears their native language. The Spirit does not restore Babel’s uniformity, but forges unity-in-diversity of language, race, nationality—embracing all without exception. During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pentecost’s Spirit summons us afresh from mediocrity and isolation to share God’s mercy with the world. “This is our mission!” Francis exclaims. We are “given the gift of the ‘tongue’ of the Gospel and the ‘fire’ of the Holy Spirit, so that while we proclaim Jesus risen, living and present in our midst, we may warm . . . the heart of the peoples, drawing near to Him, the way, the truth, and the life” (Regina Coeli address, Pentecost Sunday, May 24, 2015). FOR OUR PARISHIONERS Please call the office to remove your loved one’s name when well. AUGUSTINE CATHEDRAL RECTORY CAPITAL CAMPAIGN 2015-2018 REPORT Parish Goal: $500,000 Pledge Total: $72,120 (Paid to date: $18,993) One-Time Donation Total: $51,362 GOAL : $ 500,000 $ 123,482 • $ 70,355 • Total Received 5/4/16 $ 400,000 $ 300,000 $ 200,000 $ 100,000 $0 Parishioner Information: 40 Pledges received of 1,656 registered parishioners (2% participation). 2 Pledges received from Non-parishioners. 162 One-time donations. As you can see the above numbers, we need more parishioner participation. The number of pledges received so far reveals the average pledge is $1,717. The one time donation average is $317. I am impressed and thankful that 37 of our parishioners (2 non-parishioners) have pledged the amount above. Imagine if everyone would participate, we would not only reach our goal but go beyond it. These numbers show us that it possible to reach our goal of $500,000 when everyone participates. I invite you to please consider making a pledge for at least $1,000. That is $28 per month in a three year period. Please pray for a successful Parish Capital Campaign. Good news! Construction on the rectory roof has already begun. Again, thank you for your support. 6 Every year all volunteers and employees are required to attend a Safe Environment Presentation. Last meeting available if you have not attended: May 19, 2016 @ 6pm - in Spanish If you cannot attend, please contact Terry Gill, Compliance Officer. Total Cash Received: $70,355 Pledge + Donation YEARLY MANDATORY COMPLIANCE MEETING PASTORAL CARE TRAINING FOR HOMEBOUND EUCHARISTIC MINISTRY A MANDATORY Pastoral Care Training has been scheduled for Saturday, May 21, 2016 from 10:00am – 11:30am in the church. The presenter is Deacon Paul Duckro. This is for ALL CURRENT HOMEBOUND EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS AND FOR THOSE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN HOMEBOUND MINISTRY. It has become a concern that several individuals other than our regular homebound ministers are asking for communion to take to their loved ones who are not able to come to mass. As you know, this is a ministry that is considered a HIGH RESPONSIBILTY MINISTRY. Because of the delicate nature of this ministry, NO ONE other than those individuals who have met our compliance requirements should be taking communion to the homebound. Please call Liz Aguallo at 850-4967 if you have any questions or concerns. WOMEN OF STRENGTH June 4 & 5, 2016 Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church Gramer Hall 1946 E. He made this remark today upon receiving the Charlemagne Prize, awarded by the foundation of the same name to those who distinguish themselves throughout the year for their work in favour of integration and union in Europe. On 23 December 2015, in Aachen, Germany, it was announced by the executive committee that in 2016 the prize would be awarded to Pope Francis for the message of peace and understanding promoted during his papacy. On this occasion the jury affirmed, “In these times, in which many European citizens are seeking guidance, the Holy Father gives a message of love and encouragement.” The ceremony, which was attended by major European figures such as King Felipe VI of Spain; the Grand-duke of Luxembourg, Henri of Orange-Nassau; the German chancellor Angela Merkel; the Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi; and the president of Lithuania, Dalia Grybauskaite, began with the “laudatio” pronounced by Martin Schulz, president of the European Parliament; Donald Tusk, president of the European Council and Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission. In the Sala Ducale the choir of the Cathedral of Aachen performed four pieces: at the beginning of the event, before and after the Pope’s address, and at the end. Speeches were also made by the mayor WORLD NEWS Photo By ZENIT.org of Aachen, Marcel Philipp and the president of the Charlemagne Foundation, Jürgen Linden, who read the reasons for the jury’s decision. The ceremony was attended by more than five hundred people, including previous prizewinners Andrea Riccardi, president of the Sant’Egidio Community, and Mario Draghi, president of the European Central Bank. In his address, the Pope emphasises that European identity is and has always been dynamic and multicultural, and he encourages the “arming” of the young with the culture of dialogue and encounter to create “coalitions”, not only military and economic, but also cultural, educational, philosophical and religious. He also evoked Europe’s founding fathers, who “were prepared to pursue alternative and innovative paths in a world scarred by war. Not only did they boldly conceive the idea of Europe, but they dared to change radically the models that had led only to violence and destruction”, daring to to seek multilateral solutions to increasingly shared problems. He also reaffirmed that the Church can and must support the rebirth of a Europe that is weary but also still rich in energies and possibilities, as “her task is one with her mission: the proclamation of the Gospel, which today more than ever finds expression in going forth to bind the wounds of humanity with the powerful yet simple presence of Jesus, and His mercy that consoles and encourages”.
