Founded by Donegal County Council in 1989, the Festival continues to act as an annual, high profile focus in the county for the very best of contemporary and traditional, local and visiting Irish and international arts. The Council is mindful of the considerable support and advice afforded to the Festival by The Arts Council, Fáilte Ireland and Údarás na Gaeltachta over the years, and we look forward to a continuation and a deepening of this partnership in the years ahead. As has been the case from the outset, this year’s Festival has benefited from the input of a rich vein of artistic partners which together showcase the vibrancy, resilience, depth of imagination and community focus that characterises the cultural sector in the county today. I wish the Festival the very best this year and I look forward to many more to come. Welcome to a festival born and bred on the North West route of the Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland’s newest road odyssey. A festival that knows where the locals go but also where award winning, ground-breaking international and national music, theatre, and visual arts finds its feet in venues all along the Atlantic seaboard of County Donegal. In this 2014 programme, we present new drama that explores the changing patterns of social history in rural Ireland; new site specific theatre, street arts and spectacle; specially commissioned exposés of native spoken word and a host of international music collaborations that bring together local and international players from as far afield as Japan, Egypt, Spain and the USA. Come and immerse yourself in the real culture of Donegal. Mr. Seamus Neely, Donegal County Manager Paul Brown, Festival Director Tá lúcháir orm fáilte a chur roimh 26ú Féile Ealaíne an Earagail. Ba í Comhairle Contae Dhún na nGall a bhunaigh an Fhéile i 1989, agus gach bliain tarraingíonn sí aird an phobail ar ealaíona den scoth, idir ealaíona comhaimseartha agus ealaíona traidisiúnta, agus ar ealaíontóirí áitiúla, Éireannacha agus idirnáisiúnta. Is maith a thuigeann an Chomhairle an tacaíocht iontach atá tugtha ag an Chomhairle Ealaíon, ag Fáilte Ireland agus ag Údarás na Gaeltachta don Fhéile thar na blianta, agus tá muid ag dréim go leanfaidh an comhoibriú sin ar aghaidh agus go dtiocfaidh fás air sna blianta atá amach romhainn. Is cinnte go gcuirfidh clár spreagúil imeachtaí Fhéile Ealaíne an Earagail beocht sa tslí seo, ar imeachtaí iad a mbainfidh bunadh na háite agus turasóirí araon sult astu. Arís i mbliana, tá ionchur faighte ag an Fhéile ó réimse leathan comhpháirtithe i saol na n-ealaíon, agus tá sé seo i ndiaidh dul chun tairbhe don Fhéile, mar a rinne ón tús. Is léargas é seo ar an bheogacht, ar an teacht aniar, ar an tsamhlaíocht dhomhain agus ar an bhéim ar an phobal a bhaineann le hearnáil an chultúir sa chontae sa lá atá inniu ann. Guím gach rath ar an Fhéile i mbliana agus tá mé ag súil go mór leis na féilte a bheidh ann sa todhchaí. Tá fáilte romhat chuig féile a rugadh agus a tógadh ar chuid an Iarthuaiscirt de Shlí an Atlantaigh Fhiáin, an odaisé bóthair is úire in Éirinn. Féile a bhfuil a fhios aici cá háit a dtéann muintir na háite don spraoi ach féile fosta ina mbíonn ceol, amharclannaíocht agus amharcealaíona a bhfuil neart duaiseanna buaite acu agus atá ar thús cadhnaíochta, agus iad le feiceáil in ionaid fud fad chósta Atlantaigh Chontae Dhún na nGall. Seo cuid de na nithe atá ar chlár na bliana 2014: drámaí nua ina ndíreofar ar an athrú atá ar phatrúin na staire sóisialta faoin tuath in Éirinn; amharclannaíocht, ealaíona sráide agus radhairc úrnua a bheidh curtha in oiriúint dá suíomh; léargais nua-choimisiúnaithe ar an teanga labhartha dhúchasach; agus go leor den chomhoibriú ceoil a mbeidh ceoltóirí áitiúla agus ceoltóirí idirnáisiúnta as tíortha i bhfad i gcéin mar an tSeapáin, an Éigipt, an Spáinn agus Stáit Aontaithe Mheiriceá páirteach ann. Below the red neon sign, the doors of the Fiesta Ballroom first opened on October 5th 1962. The music of the Capitol Showband played out to two thousand people at ten bob a head. They came from across Donegal and further afield, thumbing lifts, rattling on Swilly buses or crammed into Austins and Hillmans. The air was thick with the scent of Brylcreem and hairspray, cigarette smoke and McDaid’s minerals. The Fiesta was one of the Frewin House Ramelton, Donegal T +353 (0)74 915 1246 T +353 87 954 3347 Wfrewinhouse.com Efrewin.ramelton@gmail.com finest dancehalls in Ireland, where the Clipper Carlton, the Miami Showband and the Mighty Avons played fast and slow sets through the years. The ballroom was a magnet for the dancers, chancers and lovers who jived and slow-danced across the floor, where egg and onion sandwiches, tan-brown tea and ‘courting’ out the back kept them going from 10pm until 2am. The Fiesta was the place to meet, twist and shake and fall in love. This July, Fiesta celebrates those magical times, from 1962 until the roller disco years. Come along for an evening of music, of memories and of the stories that made the Fiesta so unique. Enjoy a relaxing stay at Frewin Country House in the charming town of Ramelton and explore beautiful Donegal. 2 • Earagail Arts Festival 2014 “A meticulously crafted site-specific play.” –Evening Standard theatre, circus & opera Earagail Arts Festival in association with Clonmel Junction Festival and Dante or Die presents I Do tuesday 15th – friday 18th july · 6.30pm & 8.45pm two shows per evening · d15/d12 letterkenny, clanree hotel Ever wanted to be a fly on the wall in the build up to a wedding? All 3 artists have been part of the history-making “A Woman’s Heart” project and each is a prolific and award winning artist in their own right. Alongside Donegal’s harmonic trio of sisters The Henry Girls, Earagail Arts Festival is proud to present a magical evening of shared tradition by some of the finest musicians in Ireland today. Former member of The Waterboys, platinumselling, multi-instrumentalist Sharon Shannon celebrates her 21st year in music this year by releasing her best of collection entitled 21. With a host of Number 1 albums and singles including the Steve Earle penned The Galway Girl (performed with Mundy), Sharon is the recipient of several industry honours including a Meteor Lifetime Achievement Award. When Nanci Griffith called Frances Black “the sweetest voice of Ireland,” she was paying tribute to someone who has been one of Ireland’s bestloved and most enduring artists since the late 80s, with a string of best-selling albums, awards and other accolades behind her. Mary Coughlan is the only singer these shores has produced to rival the greatest of European cabaret and American jazz club blues because of one thing: her voice. She is unique in blending the husky notes and iconic wit of Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee with the sardonic, bitter-sweet defiance and despair of the Piaf chanteuse. The Henry Girls – Lorna, Joleen and Karen have firmly established themselves as one of Ireland’s hottest new folk exports, with regular tours in the USA and Europe promoting their own brand of roots and traditional tinged Donegal music. www.eaf.ie • 15 music “Intricate, beautiful, brittle, entrancing!” – Rock & Reel bbbbb The Regional Cultural Centre in association with Earagail Arts Festival presents Emily Portman Trio monday 14th july · 8pm · d15 / d12 letterkenny, regional cultural centre Emily Portman is the 2013 holder of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Original Song; an accolade which reflects her power to lure listeners into a complex and darkly surreal netherworld, conjuring a dark and brooding realm. With a new album Same Cloth or Not she won over fans and critics alike. Her rich aged folk voice, melancholic melodies and brilliant lyrical wit marked her as a genuinely unique Irish artist. Her live shows became much talked about affairs with the audience welling up one moment and in stitches the next. Lisa toured Ireland and mainland Europe this year with Glen Hansard, supported David Gray on his Irish tour and James Yorkston on his UK tour. “One of the most outstanding Irish albums of the year.” - The Irish Times Dublin Afrobeat Ensemble saturday 26th july · 10pm · d10 letterkenny, the greenroom Dublin Afrobeat Ensemble is a 14-strong outernational group of Afrobeat exponents from the four corners of the world. The band was founded in 2012, when a group of Afrobeat enthusiast started meeting up regularly at down-town jam sessions in Dublin. From there, they began making plans to form a new collective that would combine their various musical interests with their particular world view, a fitting finale for the closing party of EAF 2014. 18+ www.facebook.com/DublinAfrobeat www.lisaoneill.ie Impacto Print & Design Enterprise Business Park, Lisnennan, Letterkenny T +353 (0)74 917 7678 Wimpactoprint.ie A professional in-house design and production team available to assist you with a wide range of print, design or web-project services with fast turn around times and realistic prices for you, the customer. 26 • Earagail Arts Festival 2014 The Regional Cultural Centre in association with Earagail Arts Festival present The Donegal Master Fiddlers EAF 2014 Closing Concert sunday 27th july · 8pm · d15 / d12 letterkenny, an grianán theatre The Donegal Master Fiddlers gala concert is a celebration of the life and music of three of the county’s greatest living traditional fiddlers – Vincent Campbell, Dinny McLaughlin and Danny Meehan. Patrick Scott (1921 – 2014) was born in Kilbrittain, Co Cork, and trained as an architect. He had his first art exhibition in 1941 with the White Stag Group. From 1945 he spent 15 years working with Michael Scott in the architectural practice of what became Scott Tallon Walker, where his innate talent as an artist and designer developed in unison. He became a leading graphic designer with the Signa Design Consultancy (set up in 1953 by Michael Scott and Louis le Brocquy), all the while continuing to test various ideas in his painting. On winning a National Prize at the Guggenheim International Award in 1960 and representing Ireland at the XXX Venice Biennale in the same year, Scott became a full-time artist. The selection at the Glebe concentrates on Scott’s early works from the 1940s to the 70s. It features all the key phases in his artistic development from the relatively figurative work of the 40s to the abstraction of the 70s. It includes some of his earliest paintings with the White Stag Group, work from his Venice Biennale show, a selection of his Bog and Device series’ from the early 60s and a selection of his abstract gold leaf paintings from the late 60s. www.heritageireland.ie/en/North-West/ GlebeHouseandGallery Danny Minnies Resturant Annagry, Donegal T +353 (0)74 954 8201 Einfo@dannyminnies.ie Wdannyminnies.ie • Set Menu d40, A la Carte also available • Dinner served 6.30pm–9.30pm • Mon–Sat (peak), Thurs–Sat (off-peak) • Light Lunch & Afternoon Tea 12.30pm-3.30pm mp20, 2006, tempera, gold, palladium & silver leaf on unprimed canvas, 91 x 91 cm irish museum of modern art the deserted racecourse, 1954, oil on canvas, 75 x 50 cm visual arts The Glebe Gallery / Office of Public Works in association with The Irish Museum of Modern Art presents www.eaf.ie • 33 Patrick Scott: The Taylor Galleries Collection dé luan 14 iúil – dé haoine 29 lunasa /monday 14th july – friday 29th august 1pm – 5pm (dé luan go haoine / monday to friday) saor in aisce / free gaoth dobhair / gweedore, an gailearaí, an áislann an taispeántas á oscailt dé haoine, 11 iúil · 8pm fáilte roimh chách / exhibition opening friday 11th july · 8pm. everyone welcome. At many festivals and events the cameras usually point towards the acts, installations and attractions; Festival Heads focuses on the most important festival ingredient, the thing that adds colour, dynamic and life to all events – the audience. During his 12 months on the road Mark attended 183 festivals and found the common denominator shared among them all was a generosity, vivacity, wealth of character and readiness to laugh displayed by the heads who attended them. The photographs in this exhibition and his book “A Year of Festivals in Ireland” celebrate the spirit and spark of divilment that make Irish festivals unique.
