The Contemporary Austin’s Crit
Group 2015 Exhibition
The Contemporary Austin welcomes you to the Art School at Laguna Gloria, Austin’s
favorite place to learn about art since 1961. Our accomplished faculty members are
eager to support students in gaining perceptual and technical skills at all ages and
skill levels. We offer small classes and ample personal attention and interaction.
At our Laguna Gloria art-in-nature site, you never know when you might spot one
of 200 bird species along the Lake Austin shoreline or stumble upon a sculpture
in the woods. Recent additions to the Betty and Edward Marcus Sculpture Park,
just in time for summer classes, include Tom Friedman’s outsized figurative
sculpture Looking Up and John Grade’s monumental kinetic installation Canopy
Tower. These works have sparked our own students’ imaginations, and many
classes use the nature and art on site as subject matter and inspiration, as well
as our innovative museum exhibitions and community engagement programs. We
are especially proud to bring back Creativity Camp: New World Kids, a hands-on,
one-of-kind exploration of the sensory alphabet.

Fantasies come alive for little artists when
they build castles, create regal costumes,
paint banners, and sculpt dragons with
exciting art materials! Children will use basic
design elements like color and texture to
develop their art skills.
Students gain art skills by studying the past
as an artist or museum guide would. We will
uncover, gather, and show dino treasures of
our own making. We will create plaster casts,
sculpt newspaper bones, and hand-build clay
artifacts in a week of artistic fun and superbly
scientific satisfaction for young minds!
Young artists create with clay to make
both useful and playful works of art. Using
ingredients from the kitchen, they will make
their own clay to form brilliant creatures, then
move on to air-drying, oven hardening, and
ceramic clay fired in the kiln.
