Lakes Proud—a regional
"buy local" campaign—is
gaining momentum as more
and more businesses and individuals are pledging to change
their spending habits, in an effort to keep more dollars flowing within the local economy.
Here are the top reasons to
encourage businesses, individuals, and seasonal guests to
'pause before you purchase':
—Preserve Our Uniqueness
—Support Your Neighbor
—Create Mutual Benefits
—Show That You Care
—Ensure That Tax Dollars
Stay
—Encourage a Culture of
Pride
Learn more about each of
these reasons by visiting the
LakesProud.com Web site.
And be sure to follow the
#lakesproud campaign on social media as they're out and
about at area events, community gatherings, and chamber
functions!

CUYUNA REGIONAL MEDICAL Center's Quality Analyst Lisa Hennen-Tupy last week received
CRMC's Trophy Fish Award for assisting Human
Resources when they were short staffed. She
stepped in to help with new employees at the
last minute and did it with a great attitude and
satisfied the customers. All new employees were
processed so they didn't need to come back another time, one who lives 20 miles out of town
was especially appreciative.

The Crow Wing County
Parks and Cuyuna Iron Range
Heritage Network hosted a
walking tour of the Milford
Mine Memorial Park on
Wednesday.
One of several visitors
with direct ties to the community included 99-year-old Jake
Ravnik, who was a young boy
living at the Milford site when
the underground mine suddenly flooded on Feb. 5,
1924—killing 41 miners.
“This park is a special
place, an absolute jewel that
highlights the strong mining
heritage our community has
here on the Cuyuna Iron
Range,” said Rep. Dale
Lueck, R-Aitkin. “It was truly
an honor to meet Mr. Ravnik
and hear from him firsthand
about what his life was like as
a small boy at the mine.”
Ravnik’s father was one of
only seven miners who managed to scramble to safety
when the mine flooded. This
was the son’s first visit back to
the site since he parents
moved from the Milford community in 1926. During
Wednesday’s tour, Ravnik
pointed out where his parents’
house had been located and
where other various structures
sat at the Milford site, which
remained abandoned after the
mine closed in the 1930s.
“We were able to share a
bit of my family history, as my
John
great-grandfather
William Lueck was the first
miner to die from a mining accident on the Cuyuna Range,”
Lueck said. “That accident occurred in February of 1908 at
the nearby Kennedy Mine.
The Kennedy underground
mine was the first iron mine to
operate on the Cuyuna
Range.”
