One of several visitors with direct ties to the community included 99-year-old Jake Ravnik, who was a young boy living at the Milford site when the underground mine suddenly flooded on Feb. 5, 1924—killing 41 miners. “This park is a special place, an absolute jewel that highlights the strong mining heritage our community has here on the Cuyuna Iron Range,” said Rep. Dale Lueck, R-Aitkin. “It was truly an honor to meet Mr. Ravnik and hear from him firsthand about what his life was like as a small boy at the mine.” Ravnik’s father was one of only seven miners who managed to scramble to safety when the mine flooded. This was the son’s first visit back to the site since he parents moved from the Milford community in 1926. During Wednesday’s tour, Ravnik pointed out where his parents’ house had been located and where other various structures sat at the Milford site, which remained abandoned after the mine closed in the 1930s. “We were able to share a bit of my family history, as my John great-grandfather William Lueck was the first miner to die from a mining accident on the Cuyuna Range,” Lueck said. “That accident occurred in February of 1908 at the nearby Kennedy Mine. The Kennedy underground mine was the first iron mine to operate on the Cuyuna Range.” “Crow Wing County and the local community can be www.economygarages.net (218) 546-5178 Advertise Your Business Here!
