Raghu Lokanathan
Blue Girl (independent)
When Raghu
Lokanathan traded
Prince George for
Victoria, it sounds
like he also traded his
stripped down-dude-andguitar sound for a more full
folky experience. Blue Girl,
his first full-length since
2004’s Caledonia, features
Lokanathan’s signature sharp
and often-funny songwriting—my personal favourite
in this category is “Theme
Song,” a tune about the frustrations of feeling trapped in
a small town— filled out by

an impressive range

players.
Lokanathan himself plays
guitar, banjo, accordion and a
few other instruments, while
folks like Corwin Fox (who
produced the record with
Lokanathan), Daniel Lapp and
Dave Clarke help out with
more. It seems Lokanathan
has made himself right at
home in Victoria’s music
scene—and, if he keeps putting out records as good as
Blue Girl, we’re sure happy
to have him.

Don’t Say You Don’t Know What
You Want (Aaargh! Records)
The Waking Eyes
Holding on to Whatever It Is (Coalition)
It seems the Waking Eyes aren’t holding on to anything with this release, a well-crafted and varied collection of poppy rock. Holding on’s sound is all over the
map: we hear a little bit of Police-esque reggae-like
basslines in songs like the opening title track, a wailin’
’80s guitar breakdown in “Get Me to the Doctor,” and
some more tender moments courtesy of “Pick Up Your Number”
and the “Trouble on the Patio”
intro. The great thing about
Holding on is as soon as you think

in a new direction. The
