reviews Raghu Lokanathan Blue Girl (independent) When Raghu Lokanathan traded Prince George for Victoria, it sounds like he also traded his stripped down-dude-andguitar sound for a more full folky experience. Blue Girl, his first full-length since 2004’s Caledonia, features Lokanathan’s signature sharp and often-funny songwriting—my personal favourite in this category is “Theme Song,” a tune about the frustrations of feeling trapped in a small town— filled out by Raghu Lokanathan CD Release (with Fish and Bird) 8pm Friday, February 27 Solstice Cafe, 529 Pandora Tickets $10 advance/$12 door 250-475-0477 Pottery Classes an impressive range of instruments— and players. Lokanathan himself plays guitar, banjo, accordion and a few other instruments, while folks like Corwin Fox (who produced the record with Lokanathan), Daniel Lapp and Dave Clarke help out with more. It seems Lokanathan has made himself right at home in Victoria’s music scene—and, if he keeps putting out records as good as Blue Girl, we’re sure happy to have him. —Amanda Farrell Elephant Island tet of Jamie Cummins, Galen Hartley, Marc Jenkins and Kelby MacNayr welcome strings-andTo paraphrase a song title from horns help from Laura Clement, Alfons Fear, Glen Manders and this local band’s resplendent Brooke Maxwell, all culminatnew album, this should be a ing in EI’s most glittering and band that needs no introduction. fully realized release Sadly, only the wisest to date. Records) The Waking Eyes Holding on to Whatever It Is (Coalition) It seems the Waking Eyes aren’t holding on to anything with this release, a well-crafted and varied collection of poppy rock. Holding on’s sound is all over the map: we hear a little bit of Police-esque reggae-like basslines in songs like the opening title track, a wailin’ ’80s guitar breakdown in “Get Me to the Doctor,” and some more tender moments courtesy of “Pick Up Your Number” and the “Trouble on the Patio” intro. The great thing about Holding on is as soon as you think you have a song figured out, the Winnipeg foursome take the tune in a new direction. The The Waking Eyes record has a bit of an oldschool arena-rock rock feel (with the Arkells) with a modern twist, which 7pm Saturday, February 28 can’t help but make for a Sugar, 858 Yates good live show.
