2005 PARIS AIR SHOW ... Page 14
I am a member of
the IFPO and have
been taking pictures
for over 40 years. I
am also an aeronau tical engineer with
over 35 years experi ence working for a
major aerospace
company. These two
abiding interests have coincided in the past
when my work involved the use of photogra phy in documenting wind tunnel tests.
Over the past five years, the connection has
intensified as I have attended international air
shows as part of my work. Having the
“heavy” gear required to shoot flying pro grams, as well as being able to shoot the very
largest and smallest exhibits in the halls has
gained me a regular position on the air show
team.
The 2005 Paris Show was my third but the
first show on my own. With the help of the
IFPO and Today’s Photographer Magazine it
worked out very well. A Press Pass, in some
ways, grants even more privileges than an
Exhibitor’s Pass, and having access to the
Press Center was great. However, the biggest
benefit was access to the Press Photo Area out
in front of the crowd packed up against the
fence. It was even better than the spot on the
chalet porch that I always coveted.
Someone going to Paris having only experi enced American air shows would have little
idea of what he had gotten into. Hopefully, my
article will provide a useful introduction to
this amazing field. Fred Smalley.

10 Easy Steps
People reliably make the best photos. Unless local clothes, costumes or uniforms are important do not take pic tures of the whole body. Instead, focus on the face. Start with the eyes and mouth and work out until you have
just enough to show the individual’s character and emotion.
I
have had my photos published
in dozens of foreign magazines
plus the Los Angeles Times,
Today’s Photographer, travel
brochures and numerous exhibits. I
would like to share my secrets with
you so you can see how easy it is to
get published and make money.
First, you must remember that each
of us has a unique look at the world
that surrounds us. In the same image
we often see many different things.
This unique point of view that we present through our photographs brings
people closer to share the experience
of beauty and love or sadness and
even despair that we see and feel.
“But where is the market?” you are
thinking. Simply go to a newsstand
and look at the sheer quantity of the
magazines; there are many dozens of
travel and photography magazines on
the shelves. Multiply this by at least
50 countries and you will have an idea
of the magnitude of the number of
pages the editors have to fill every
month with something exotic and
unusual for their readers. If you set a
6
careful plan, you can get a fair share
of your photos into those pages. But
you must plan -- and follow through.
Most unforeseen problems can be
prevented by careful preparation. And
remember -- the exposure time of a
bad photo is probably the exact
1/125th second as a great one! The
difference is that the great one is preceded by months of preparation and
maybe years of experience.
So in preparing for a photo trip I
use the following guidelines and follow them faithfully:
1. Have a clear objective for the trip.
Will it be a vacation on the beach
where you might take some photos
to jog your memories in 15 years?
Or will the trip truly be for making
photos? If the trip is dedicated to
making photos, research your destination carefully. Browse magazines, internet articles and travel
guides. Study other photographers’
work -- this can often light up your
own imagination.
2. Make travel arrangements early. If
it is an out of way destination you

need even more time to prepare.
First check to see if you need a
visa to your destination or any side
trip you might make. If your destination is frequented by tourists,
you may have to make arrangements early to get hotels and airline tickets at special prices.
3. Plan the amount of film you will
use and buy it at home. In out of
way places the film you use might
not be available or could be out of
date and definitely will cost more.
Make sure you pack film for a
“hand check” at the airports in a
see-through zip bag. Today’s
stronger security X-ray machines
might ruin your precious pictures.
If you use digital, have enough
memory cards with you. Be careful
about a stray electromagnetic noise
that can zap your data on memory
cards. I double back-up my pictures, once on a small, portable no
computer needed CD burner and
once into my iPod Photo. Both are
readily available. Buy a special
metal, not plastic, memory card

storage box and carry in your hand
luggage. Each memory card should
have a large number on it, and you
should keep track of what photos
are on which cards. Metal protects
the cards better against damage,
both physical and X-ray, or electromagnetic interference.
4. The key to your success in a far
away place depends on your gear.
Before the trip is the best time to
thoroughly check your equipment.
Pack efficiently, but remember,
sometimes less is more. A tripod or
a bean bag can be helpful many
times. I use a large wheeled Tamrac bag, which can convert to a
backpack. Before buying a new
one, check airline regulations for

size. Overseas, most airlines are
stricter with carry-on size than in
the U.S. Often your checked in
baggage weight allowance will be
reduced by the weight of your
carry-on. Don’t forget to pack a
smaller camera bag to use when
you reach your destination.
5. Plan to take enough batteries with
you. Most cameras rely on a battery
source for power. If you use one of
the more common types of battery,
change to a Li-Ion rather than the
more common alkaline. Li-Ion is
lighter and can last up to seven
times longer. If your battery is
rechargeable, then be extra careful
for unseen problems. Make sure
your charger is worldwide voltage
and has the right plug converter for
your destination country. In addition to AC charger I always take a
car charger, just in case. Most cars
around the world have a 12 volt DC
cigarette lighter that might save
that special shot in the middle of
the jungle. If your destination is a
cold place, be aware that the batteries might work with only 30% of
their rated power output, so have
enough spares.
6. Plan in advance for the shots you
want to make -- yes make! Do not
take photos, make them! Make
them filled with life, light and
smiles. Make them jump off the
page. One of my teachers told me

If you are looking for opportunities to make money with your
camera, check out the look-a-like entertainers. Elvis look-a-likes are
everywhere and are a huge business. Others imitators are also big
such as those who impersonate Shania Twain and other famous
entertainers.
So how do you make this work? Think about it. All of the baby
boomers knew and loved Elvis. Now Elvis Presley Enterprises is
introducing him to the X Generation. Forbes magazine recently
named Elvis the most successful and highest earning deceased artist
ever. Over 600,000 fans visit Graceland annually. Elvis Presley
Enterprises is involved in a worldwide licensing program, merchandising, music publishing, television, film, video and internet projects.
They will be coming out with everything from Elvis Presley Jeans to

having his picture on beer bottles. As you can see they will be spending thousands of dollars on advertising and promotions. And they
need photographers to make that work.
The American public has an obsession with nostalgia which
breeds the market for the look-a-likes to succeed. No one knows how
many Elvis impersonator's there are in the USA but the number is
humongous and grows daily even world wide. These performers are
always looking for promotional pictures and publicity. Since most of
us never had the chance to take pictures of the King, now is our
chance to work with a look alike.
Elvis II is a singer, entertainer and performer from Kansas City,
Missouri. He sings with the Dream Sensations & The Thunderbolt
Band and shows up for parades and other public events. He was

interviewed by CBS television on the day they aired the Elvis movie
made for TV. He has done print, promotional advertising and TV
commercials for various companies including the Airline History
Museum. The museum owns one of the last three Lockheed Constellation airplanes (a Connie) that is still in existence which makes it
very news worthy.
Another look-a-like of of the country music entertainer Shania
Twain is Shania of Kansas City. This Shania has just finished a reality show Chasing the Dream. She also competes in figure body building and swimsuit competitions. She has been published in Ballie’s
M a g a z i n e, Tweeze magazine, Natural Muscle magazine and was a
pin-up model for a 1940 type independent film. She’s done promotional work for NASCAR, Dove, Vaseline, Suave and was an Axe
Angel for Axe Cologne for men. She is also a great stage performer.
Shania is not shy. She has been in front of the camera more times
than she can remember and loves every minute of it. She is great to
www.ifpo.net
work with because she understands the need for those great new photos that will land her next assignment or promotional tour. She’s a
photographer’s dream to shoot.
The point to all of this information is the simple fact that each of
these situations is an excellent opportunity for an assertive photographer to make money while building a reputation. Pause and consider
all of the businesses and corporations that these two celebrities have
worked for that I know about. It is obvious that they can be the link
for me to these potential major clients.
Bottom line is you can make money having fun with what you love
to do and make connections to important clients for future assignments. And if you are lucky enough to team up with a hard working,
serious Elvis II type, you can be creative while experiencing the
songs of the Rock & Roll legend that started a phenomenon that is
still being celebrated today and will possibly live forever! Can it get
better than that? !

Covering the New York Liberty of the WNBA season after season is challenging and rewarding. Although I am a veteran sports photographer with
multiple media outlets, I still have to coordinate my assignments through my
editor at Today’s Photographer Magazine and the New York Liberty press
office.
The 2005 season seemed very promising for Liberty until their All-Star
Center Ann Wauters suffered a hand injury just one game short of the playoffs. Then coach Pat Coyle had to face the dilemma, “Can a team that lacks
killer instinct when its best player is healthy, win a WNBA championship
when that same player is injured and out of the lineup?” Unfortunately, 2005
was not the year for a Liberty championship.
But there is next year ... and I will be there. !

Not your hometown Sunday afternoon shooting experience
By Fred Smalley, IFPO, Florissant, Missouri
First air show appearance of the Airbus A380 at the 2005 Paris Air Show ©2005 Fred Smalley
editor of Todays Photographer, and
my press pass arrived in early May.
The press pass is particularly useful at
Paris, as it allows entry from 7:00am
to 7:00pm and use of the press facilities. A normal Trade Visitor’s pass
only covers the normal hours of the
show from 9:30 to 6:00. In addition,
the press photo area at Paris is in a
prime location near the South end of
the runway, in front of the President’s
Chalet.
On the opening day, things went
fairly smoothly. The airport-level
security screening was thorough, but
efficient. The flight demonstrations
didn’t start until noon, so I had time
for a pass down the static display line.
At the far end, Boeing and Airbus
were symbolically glowering at each
other with the new A380 parked
across from a Boeing 747. I got a good
shot for a Boeing-Airbus story and, by
the way, the two airplanes were never
again parked in that position. An
important lesson for air show work is
to get everything you can the first day.
By the time I got back
to the Press Center, the
opening ceremony was
about to begin. The President of France was the
guest of honor, surrounded by his entourage and a
large TV and photo press
contingent. I was able to
get a clear shot as the
president was walking
through the Dassault
exhibit to ceremonially
unveil the mock-up of
Folding rescue boat carried by the Bombardier CL415
Most of us think of an air show as a
day at the local airport or military base
where there will be some airplanes on
display and a flying show. Major international air shows are very different
affairs. There are “public days” over
the weekend that draw huge crowds,
but the real show goes on during the
“trade days” through the workweek.
An international air show, like the
Paris “Salon”, Singapore’s Asian
Aerospace, or Farnborough International is an aerospace trade show
where millions of dollars of business
is being done. These shows present the
full range of aerospace systems and
everything needed to build, operate,
and support them. Reporting on this
vast display is much more than taking
pictures of the daily flying program. I
will use my experience at the Paris Air
Show in June 2005 to illustrate what
goes on.
Well before the show, a request
must be sent to the organizers for press
accreditation. Vonda Blackburn sent in
the required form over her signature as

the new Neuron UCAV.
The flying display ran from noon
until five. The first public appearance
of the Airbus A380 was a must for this
show, and it took place at the very
beginning of the show.
The general rule about shooting the
first day is particularly important when
it comes to the flying display. There
are usually special opening day features for the visiting dignitaries. Also,
things can fail and an airplane won’t
fly again at the show. It also provides
a first look at the flying routines, so if
something doesn’t work out, there will
be opportunities later in the week to
return better prepared.
It is important to pick up and read
the show dailies -- publications produced at all of the major shows, covering events at the show. As you arrive
each morning, young people meet you
at the gate thrusting these magazines
into your hands. Take all of them! Do
your best to read them during the
President Chirac with Dassault
executives at the Paris Air Show

when. If you can’t read them at the
show, they are worth taking home.
The articles will explain the background and provide details on many of
the exhibits at the show.
The Press Center is another of the
useful benefits of press accreditation at
Paris. It is ideally located on the static
display line near the exhibit halls. A
room is provided for “independent”
reporters, equipped with a number of
computers, telephones, a fax machine
and a copier. If you have your own
laptop, free wireless Internet access is
available.
One of the fascinating things about
the big international shows is that literally everything required to design,
build, and maintain modern aircraft is
on display. Components range from
forgings to bolts and rivets to gigantic
turbofan engines. For military aircraft,
there are firms selling advanced
weapon systems. For the airlines, the
latest concepts in luxury seating are on
display. Maintenance and overhaul
services are offered.
The material provided at the various
displays is free, but it is essential to
have business cards if you want more
than the most basic product information or to talk with someone about specific issues. For the press, it establishes “serious” intent. The card justifies
giving out the more complete data
package or the “press kit” that is not
made available to the casual visitor.
The chalets are private areas where
the exhibitors meet and entertain their
customers. The large companies also
have “press chalets” where they hold
their smaller press briefings and provide facilities for interviews. The press
chalet is also where media representatives can pick up the company press
kit, and product information packages.
This is another place where the press
pass is essential to get past the very
polite gentlemen wearing dark suits
and earphones who mind the door. As
an example, the people at Bombardier
provided a variety of material and told
me about a photo opportunity out on
the static line Wednesday afternoon.
When I arrived at the Bombardier
display, I was the only one interested
in the CL415 water bomber, so I got

the “deluxe” tour. This
included a demonstartion
of the unique folding rescue boat and being able to
take pictures inside the

president of the division.
He gave me an appreciation for the highly specialized business of aerial firefighting—priceless background material.

SELL PHOTOS YOU ALREADY HAVE!
Successful stock libraries contain HIGH QUALITY images of everyday life situations. IFPO members shoot such images everyday as a matter of
course. However, unless a photographer has hundreds or thousands of images, he may be shunned by the large stock houses. This could happen for two
reasons, he simply may not be recognized as a successful stock photographer or his stock of a few dozen images is too small for an agency to consider.
The IFPO Stock Listing service removes these barriers totally and opens doors to the international sales market.
IFPO’s Stock Listing Service
The following elements clearly distinguish the
differences in the IFPO Stock Listing Service and
a stock agency:
1. The service provided to IFPO members is a
STOCK PHOTO LISTING SERVICE and
NOT an agency.
2. Each photographer manages his own sales.
3. No commissions will be charged ever.
4. Image buyers will browse the IFPO image
bank on the internet, select the photos, get the
price, index number and contact information to
order directly from the photographer who
owns the images.
5. Members may set their own pricing for each
photo sold.
6. Complete copyright standards will be available at the site for image buyers and IFPO
member photographers (the sellers).
7. Image searches by buyers may be made by
subject.
8. The most important part of any Stock Photo
Service is its indexing system that allows an
image buyer to identify a photo for purchase. • There are no commissions ever -- unlike

While I was wondering what to do
over the summer of 2005, after my
family left on a 1,200-mile journey to
visit our families, I noticed in the
newspaper that it was the summer for
the 80’s Hair Band reunions. I had

I could see them again ... this time
from the foot of the stage as a press

I began calling clubs and promoters.
With my press credentials backed up
by the editorial staff at Today’s Pho tographers Magazine and American

to get access to all the concerts I wanted to photograph. I was also able to
work next to experienced press photographers, which is always a great
experience and one of the best ways to
learn.
My whole summer was spent going
from one concert to another. I saw
Motley Crue, Cinderella, RATT, Quiet
Riot, Warrant, Tesla and others. I had
full access to the performers, including
sound checks, photo pit or front row at
the concerts as well as the “meet and
greets”. They were all older but they
still put on great concerts.

EXOTIC TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY continued from page 7
once, “A photo is worth a thousand
words, but make those that need
only one ...Wow!”
Map out the exact geographic location of interest such as the bay,
special monuments, etc. With such
details, you can plan for that special moment when the light is just
right and the best time of day to
shoot. Have patience though,
sometimes nature needs a little
time.
7. Let light drive your creativity. Use
the golden light in early mornings
and late afternoons, sometimes
supplemented with backlight to
make the shot. Occasionally, a little fill flash will add dramatic light
to your shot. If you have a digital
camera it will be easy to check the
results instantly and if necessary
“make” the shot again.
8. Be sensitive to people’s aversion to
photography where local custom
might be different than what you
are used to at home. When you
first arrive, take some photos of the
local buildings, landscapes etc, so
you can later place the people into
the story.
Of all the various subjects, people reliably make the best photos.
Unless local clothes, costumes or
uniforms are important do not take
pictures of the whole body.
Instead, focus on the face. Start
with the eyes and mouth and work
out until you have just enough to
show the individual’s character
and emotion. Don’t be afraid to
crop tightly. By placing the sun
behind you and slightly to one
side, you will have light shining on
the subject’s face and the shadows
will give depth.
9. In overcast days use your fill flash.
Use a long lens so you will not
overwhelm your subject. I like my
80-200mm lens and use it with a
wide aperture to localize the sharpness on my subject. Center the picture on his or her eyes. Use a background that will not interfere with
26
your subject. Again remember to
shoot in the warm golden colors of
“the magic hours” of early morning and late afternoon. Once you
have a few shots, and if you have a
digital camera with an LCD, show
your photos to the subject. Creating a connection between you and
your subject enables him or her to
relax and then you can take even
better shots.
10.Go with an open mind, pack a new
set of eyes and expect the unexpected. Digital cameras have certain advantages over film cameras.
You can be sure right on the spot
that the photo you made is right.
Digital will work in almost all light
conditions. You can change the
white balance to the existing conditions, in many cases, just by
pressing a button and check the
results instantly.
In exotic or not so exotic travel
photography you go to a destination,
sometimes literally at the end of the
world, where you know you will
never go again. So try different things
in making the shot. Add flash, make a
longer exposure, experiment and
check your results. Invariably you will
learn from your mistakes more than
from your successes. Finally, don’t
forget to take some self portraits that
will put you squarely into the middle
of the action and can be the subject of
endless stories for years to come.
The fact that you are reading this
magazine is proof that you want to be
a better photographer and are looking
for ways to make money with your
photos. Most photographers, at least
the ones I have met, like to travel and
do take photos during their trips. The
only logical step is to combine these
two pleasurable activities and start
making money from those trips.
To further understand exotic travel
photography, step out of your usual
box and think differently. It is not at
all necessary for you to travel 10,000
miles to capture an exotic shot.
Usually what is exotic for one per-
Today's Photographer International Web Edition
son is everyday, common occurrences
and surroundings for others somewhere. For example when you go to
an upscale hotel in Bali, Indonesia,
you may see a show of Balinese Exotic Dancers once a week and a few
days later Balinese Musicians. If you
stay longer, you may see a show
repeated. This is an everyday job for
performers who go from hotel to hotel
on the same day every week.
So rather than jumping on an airplane, spending 2-3 weeks in a far
away land in search of an exotic
dancer or a Camel Fair look around
you. What do you have locally that
would be considered exotic by someone living in a far-away land? Mardi
Gras? A Cattle Drive? A Bluegrass or
Jazz Festival? The Superbowl? A
Tractor Pull? Get the picture?
If you live in Arizona, Sedona, the
Grand Canyon, the hidden canyons,
Lake Powell, Cathedral Rock and
many more would be fascinating pictures and stories for readers on another continent. The Great Lakes, or the
beauty of Montana, the historical
buildings in Boston or Washington,
D.C., Big Sur and the majestic redwoods in Northern California, the
Excalibur Hotel, the Venetian and the
new Wynn in Las Vegas are all sites
that interest foreign readers.
With a little creativity and planning
you can master the techniques of
Exotic photography -- at home. Sign
up for a photography seminar or buy
some of the excellent videos in this
magazine. Then go out and take your
own beautiful, unusual, strange and
yes, EXOTIC photos. Then take aim
at the foreign photo magazines and
submit your photos. If you have a web
site, publish your photos on it, if not I
would strongly recommend that you
sign up with Today’s Photographer
Stock Gallery.
So many editors, agencies and magazines are searching for new pictures,
angles and photographers. Search the
web to find them. Then conquer their
readers. It can be done. !

USE THIS FORM to submit ARTICLES, PHOTOS, and TIPS to be considered for
publication in Today's Photographer. USE THIS FORM and follow these guidelines to
make sure your submission package is complete.
LOOK AT THE MAGAZINE!! When you look at examples of what is
actually published in the magazine, it's like looking at the test
answers before taking the test!!
HOW TO SUCCEED is what we are all about! How to make money,
gain access and get published. How did you get the celebrity to let
you get the picture. How did you get the model to pose for you. What
surprise barriers were you able to overcome? How did you get those
death defying pictures right from your car window?
INSPIRATION is the word our readers use most to describe the magazine and it's content! Have you had some success with your camera
or an idea that would inspire others?
SELDOM SHOOTERS: So you only picked up your camera once or
twice in the past few years, shot a lot of film for an afternoon or a
week, then let it get away from you. What was so important that
caused you to pick your camera up? Family reunion? Your kid's big
soccer game? Beach trip of a lifetime? Favorite group finally came to
town in concert? House down the street caught fire? 2 weeks in Yellowstone? Big celebration at work?
DIFFERENT DRUMMERS: Maybe you have a story with a different
slant — submit it. You may inspire us to expand our editorial range.
Consider and editorial submission even if you have never made a
one before. Publishing your story and/or photos is another way for
us to reward our readers who share a special bond in their passion
for succeeding as photographers ... and making money. Again, our
resolution is to support that effort in every issue and to make sure
that Today’s Photographer “works” for you.

Model Consulting is a business opportunity
sponsored by the International Freelance

Hundreds of models have been recruited
over the years by IFPO member photographers. Consultants may experience dramatic
increases in their incomes as a result of the
IFPO New Discoveries program; first, by
photographing aspiring new models’ portfolios, then by providing access to the IFPO

who do not recruit models for IFPO are able
to attract all the models they need for their
other photography interests!
AMATEUR MODELS
New “amateur” models discovered by consultants have starred in major video productions, auditioned for prime time TV shows,
and participated in fashion, photography, and

Can You Purchase The Digital Camera You Really Want???
By Dennis Hodges IFPO, Kansas City, Missouri
Model: Breeze
Digital photography is here to
stay, but there is
definitely a learning curve that comes
with the pro line cameras. When you
try to buy one you sometimes
wonder if the sales person is
even speaking English.
The design and basic set up
of the digital camera seems to
be the next generation of the
35mm program cameras. The
Pro Digital has your program
mode, shutter priority, aperture
priority, and manual settings.
But then you realize it has a lot
of bells and whistles that you
don’t need or want.
When I buy a new camera I
want to start shooting right
away and not spend the next
month or two learning how to use it.
Are the camera manufacturers aware
that the digital cameras they are building are too glitzy and not the old
standby workhorses that most of us
want?
In a beginning photography class
the two things they tell you to bring to
in are a manual 35 mm camera and the
owner’s manual. The old manual cameras such as the K-1000 Pentax were
probably used by more students than
any other camera in existence. It had a
good solid body, changeable lenses,
manual film advance, hot shoe, synchronization hook up for studio lights
or flash off camera and an in-body
light meter. It was one of the simplest
cameras to understand and by today’s
terms it was USER FRIENDLY.
The photographer could manually
change the shutter speed and the aperture setting. The ASA or ISO had to
be manually set with each roll of film
with different speeds. This all changed
when the DX coded film was introduced.
www.ifpo.net
My point is -- almost anyone could work with confidence instantly.
The feature everyone likes most
take the K-1000 out of the box, quickly read the manual and begin shooting about digital cameras is the instant
in twenty or thirty minutes with a fair preview of pictures. If you don’t like
amount of control. Bottom line -- pho- your first shot you can immediately
tographers were shoot again. You get a larger percentable to achieve age of usable pictures from each photo
what they wanted session plus saving the cost of film
without having to and processing. It is great technology
learn about options when you can use it.
Would you like to see a professionthey would never
use. Quick and sim- al, digital camera on the market with
ple -- those were the basic set-up and design of the old
K-1000? If so contact your favorite
the days.
There are simply manufacturer or send us your point of

and obscure func- possible publication
One final note: if these new cameras
tions offered in current digital cam- are doing all of the thinking, will they

need to use one, for photographers? !
you have to go back to the
owners manual. Meanwhile
you lose the shot. That defies
what photography is about -getting the shot when you see
it.
In my opinion the manufacturers could save hundreds of
dollars per camera in production costs if they would leave
most of those essentially useless functions out -- especially
in their pro lines. Save the
bells and whistles for the
photo enthusiast who enjoys
and has the time to tinker with
such options. Then everyone
wins.
In addition, manufacturers
could be selling more cameras, showing a higher profit
margin and end up with more
satisfied customers. The
working photographer wins
big with a less expensive digital camera that he understands

to wait while he made a telephone call. Shortly he told me
that someone was coming over.
A few minutes later a Mr. Müeller arrived, quickly
perused my credentials, then motioned for me to follow him
into the building! I grabbed my gear, followed him up several flights of stairs, around hallways and finally into an
office space with a perfect view of the start and finish line!
He even asked if this was alright! I assured him that it was
just great. He said that he would wait in another office until
I was finished then escort me back outside. I managed to get
some great shots including the three champs among the top
10 finishers of 2004 Tour de France – Jan Ulrich, Andreas
Klöden, and Georg Totschnig. It was an amazing experience.
I offer the following tips for using press credentials in a
foreign country:
• Always have your national passport or visa as well as
your press credentials available. Also have photocopies of
your press credentials to hand to officials for verification
while you hold on to the originals. The process is much
easier now with the advent of the new AI Universal Press
Credentials. The high security issuing information and
verification system via the internet works anywhere in the
world 24/7. With only your verification code, an official
can instantly verify your press assignment status.
• ALWAYS learn a few words in the language of the country you are visiting. Most people will appreciate the
effort. Although many people speak English because of
tourism, don't always expect it. I often found that my German skills exceeded their English.
• Be courteous and for goodness sakes be patient. You will
be surprised at how everything starts to come together.
Impatience often comes off as being rude, obnoxious, and
disrespectful. And that just helps to spread the myth that
all Americans are arrogant -- even those with legitimate
press credentials -- so be patient.
• Be respectful of other cultures and the way they do
things. If you are not sure about something just ask. If
you make a mistake, apologize, smile, shake your head,
point to yourself, and say ‘crazy tourist’.
• Always try to make prior contact and arrangements, but if
you find yourself in the thick of an event be brave and
approach someone. The worst that can happen is that they
say no.
• If you have not enrolled in the new AI Universal Press
Program, consider it now! It is the culmination of more
than 20 years of research and development plus input
from IFPO photographers working in the field.
Traveling abroad and using your press credentials can be
an exhilarating experience. You can be successful and have
fun if you just use common sense. Remember that IFPO is
always there to back you up via the internet 24/7 no matter
where you are. All you have to do is be courteous, patient
and respectful. Display and use your IFPO press credentials
with pride. !

IFPO &
AI News Service
Launch
Universal Press Program
The new Universal Press Credentials
issued by IFPO’s AI News Service are
the result of 21 years of research and
development using vital input from
IFPO press photographers. The new
design and issuing information meet the
stringent requirements of press officials
and law enforcement around the world.
The Universal Press Credentials serve
3 purposes. The first and most important
one is to create a visual impact that
matches our current name recognition.
To do that we have to make sure that all
of our photographers present exactly the
same credentials no matter where they
show up in the world to cover an event.
Long term that will create a lasting visual impression that will elevate our name
recognition even higher which is key to
the future success of AI New Service
Correspondents.
Universal issuing information is
imperative but must be secured because
of problems with identity theft. The new
design adds height, hair and eye color.
However, the pertinent information such
as date of birth and place of birth is still
available to press officials and law
enforcement but is no longer visible to
the public eye.
Three new items, the armband, a personally coded auto press badge and a
new embroidered AI Patch have been
added based on popular demand from
photographers in the field. All are useful
and will certainly contribute to the long
term goal of higher visual impact. A
fourth item, a full packet of Press Photographers’ Forms, is also included.
The new AI credentials are available
to veteran IFPO Press Photographers
with previous satisfactory activity in the
American Image Press Program. AI credentials are backed-up by American
International (AI) News Service in addition to Today’s Photographer magazine.
The application appears on page 11. For
further information call 336-945-9867

YOU CAN BE AN
THE ADVANTAGE
HOW IT WORKS
WHY YOU?
An IFPO Distributorship is an exceptional
opportunity for IFPO members to achieve success
and make money by taking advantage of the millions of dollars and 15 years of research that have
gone into developing the IFPO / Today's Photographer Magazine Concept. The modest distributor's
fee gives you the value of MILLIONS of dollars
that have been invested in 15 years of advertising
IFPO’s dependability, quality and services.
Today's Photographer Magazine and its associated products gets more exposure than any other
photography magazine. It is advertised regularly in
display space advertising in Popular Photography,
Photographic, Outdoor Photographer, American
Photographer and Shutterbug. As a distributor, you
get the direct benefit of this advertising.
Today's Photographer is sold on Newsstands
throughout the United States, Canada, and around
the world.
IFPO is recognized in more than 140 countries
on all continents of the world and has more than
67,000 members. Today's Photographer Magazine
is currently being distributed to more than 80,000
photography enthusiasts 4 times a year.
Typically, distributorships or franchises that
give a distributor this kind of exposure, promotion
an d value are priced from $10 ,0 00.00 to
$150,000.00.
1. DISTRIBUTOR DISCOUNT: You are entitled
to order products and services from a current issue
of Today's Photographer at a only 50% of the listed standard price. For example: multiply list prices
by 0.5 (a $68 membership would be $34.00). Half
of $39.95 for example, would be $19.98 (rounded
off to the nearest cent).
•You may wish to purchase many IFPO programs
or services for yourself. A distributorship will save
you 50%.
LIFETIME
YOU CAN:
•You can start a new business and coast in the
wake of the IFPO flagship. Let its research, product development, name recognition and dollars
spent on advertising make money for you. Let
IFPO's rapid success plan turn into financial
growth for you.
•You can reap the profits from more than 2.5 million dollars already spent on advertising in all the
major photography and video magazines. Let
these IFPO advertising dollars work for you and
your business by building name recognition for the
IFPO products and programs that you sell.
•You can offer IFPO products and programs to
your clients without spending a penny for market
research or product development. IFPO is constantly upgrading its products and services to
maintain its leadership position in the international
marketplace.
•You can guarantee satisfaction for each product
and program you offer. That customer satisfaction
is backed up by IFPO and is a vital part of the
IFPO success story.

any quantity. IFPO will ship to you or your customer direct. No minimums or quotas.

MAKE MONEY:
•A distributor could sell only 2 videos a week and
net up to $2000.00 a year. He could build his
business up to 200 videos a week and be pulling in
potentially $200,000.00 per year.
•A distributor could set up a network of 100
Model Consultants "talent scouts" in an area. He
would make nearly $15,000 just on the model consultant kits and IFPO memberships, then would
make more on the videos, forms, books and other
items that consultants frequently buy.
•A distributor could sell to schools and educational institutions. IFPO's instructional videos are
very popular with schools of all kinds (Junior
Highs, High Schools, Colleges, Trade Schools,
etc.). Schools typically purchase in larger quantities, often 10 to 20 videos at a time. Currently,
about 100 schools are purchasing from IFPO.
There are tens of thousands more in this country
alone.
•Recreational groups sponsored by government or
other non-profit groups. For example, Military
bases have recreational programs that include selfhelp and how-to programs on video. Currently,
IFPO does a brisk business with military base purchase orders from only a few bases.
•Many other groups sponsor recreational programs
that would be very interested in photography
instructional videos. Groups plan trips. Vacationers use cameras and camcorders.
•Photographer's swap meets or flee markets are
ideal places to set a booth and market IFPO products. In these situations, having merchandise to
sell (like videos) is a plus. But if you don't have
the merchandise, be sure to get the name, address,
and phone number of each person that stops by
your booth. Each one is a prospective customer
•You may be associated with a group such as a
camera club, family members or close associates
who may want to participate in IFPO products and
services at discount prices.
•If you have a photography studio or similar business may wish to arm all of your staff members
with memberships and press program credentials
from IFPO to make them more competitive. An
IFPO Distributorship would enable them to do
this at reduced costs to the studio or company.
•You may want to start down the road of being
your own boss with an IFPO distributorship. You
can start small, order in any quantities, part time or
full time. Most of all, you may have a few hours a
week to invest in your financial future.
for the future. If you run out of copies of Today's
Photographer at your booth, you can always mail
them one in the future with a special offer flyer of
some kind.
REPEAT CUSTOMERS
The best opportunity you have to make
money as a distributor is to give your customers a
REASON to do business with you. You can use
your own liberal distributor discount to your
advantage. If you can give your customers a 5 or
10% discount by purchasing through you, then
they have a reason to order with you instead of
ordering directly through mail order with IFPO.
Your own margins may be a little slimmer, but
your volume would be much higher.
Now you could consider distributing Today's
Photographer Magazines liberally with your business card attached and a notice that offers your
own 5% or 10% discount if they order through
you.
In this way, you would get the full advantage
of repeat orders from the same customers.
Here is a sample list of schools and institutions
that have already placed large orders directly with
IFPO:
AFETA, Camp Peary, VA; Miami Killian
Senior High School, Miami, FL; Leon County Schools,
FL; River East School Division, Winnipeg, Manitoba,
Canada; Aims Community College, Greeley, CO; CBN
University Library, Virginia Beach, VA; Southwest State
University Library, Marshall, MN;University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA; NAF Fort Sam Houston, TX;
Stockton Unified School District, Stockton, CA; Phillipsburg Board of Education, NJ; Roberts High School, Florence, CO; Oakton Community College, Des Plaines, IL;
Greenville Technical College, SC; Curtis Jr High School,
Tacoma, WA; Minuteman Regional Vocational Technical
School District, MA; Ferris State College Library, Big
Rapids, MI; Maricopa Community College, Phoenix, AZ;
Southeastern Mass. University, MA; Sparta Senior High
School, Sparta, WI; and many, many more.
The List Price of the IFPO Distributor Program is $1,490. For a limited time, the price is reduced to $387 but will only remain at
that special price until our current Distributor Enrollment program has met it’s goals.

On Assignment Sports
Extreme Bull Riding at the 2005 San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo
By Conrad. F. Housler IFPO San Antonio, Texas
BULL PIN: RIDER B. J. SCHUMAKER FINDS THAT HE WAS NOT READY FOR A BULL NAMED “BETTA B REDI”
I have been a member of IFPO
for about 5 years and have used
American Image Press pass to
cover two floods, two vehicle
crashes, and a house fire.
Authorities never questioned me. I continue to operate on the theory, “Ask and
the assignment shall be yours.” It works.
In January 2005 I learned there would
be Extreme Bull riding at the San Antonio
Stock Show and Rodeo. I called the media
rep for the livestock commission; then
faxed her copies of my American Image
Press pass and my IFPO business card. I
received permission to shoot the rodeo on
the 4th and 5th of February 2005.
When I arrived at the media trailer a
press pass was provided and I was trans-
ported to the arena. There I met the other
photographers representing the San Antonio Express newspaper, the rodeo association and two TV stations. This was my
first experience of shooting with pros. My
nervousness was quickly quelled by their
friendliness and helpful hints. We were
positioned over the bullpen with a great
view of the event. I obtained some great
photos during the two evenings, which I
am now preparing for local competition.
The IFPO system works. I also found
that sending a thank you letter and some
of your best shots to the media rep could
be helpful in being invited back.
Shooting and Equipment tips:
There is very little room at the photographer’s platform, so don’t carry bulky
equipment, but do carry lots of film or
memory cards for digital photography.
There is a lot of fast action, so have the
camera always ready but it is not possible
to use a tripod in this situation. Carry fast
film; 1600 ISO works very well for the
arena lighting. I use Nikon N90S, 28-200
and 70-300 Nikkor lenses with 800 and
1600 Fujifilm.
On a final note be sure to pick up a program which lists riders, bull owners etc.
These are your prime contacts for sales.
They quickly become hot contacts for
photos that are published. Also don’t forget to shoot the young cowboys (kids) in
the audience especially if you have a digital camera and printing capabilities. You
can make sales on the spot. I did! !
ON ASSIGNMENT: MODEL PHOTOGRAPHY
Why You Shoot A Model More Than Once
By Henry Despres IFPO, Bay Shore, New York
MODEL J. KYMBERLY
Shooting a model more than
once is an advantage for the
model and the photographer.
Getting to know each other
develops a level of comfort,
rapport and timing that is more
critical to the shoot and the
resulting photos than any other
single factor.
Yes, the photographer must
be sound technically and have
good equipment. It also helps
if the model knows how to
pose and happens to be beautiful -- and if working outside
the weather cooperates. But all
of these are trumped by rapport!
Once the two are in sync the
shutter will just keep on clicking with little need for direction. This is the secret to great
model portfolios, wedding
photography and portraits. !

NOW ONLINE . .
Today’s
magazine
Thanks to the UNLIMITED POTENTIAL of the Internet and IFPO’s aggressive leadership in electronic publishing, IFPO
is able to bring new muscle to the large number of IFPO members who are interested in sports photography.
Today’s Sports magazine is an On-Line electronic publication with the capacity to promote and publish ALL of it’s
SPORTS Photographer’s photos. A print magazine could NEVER MAKE SUCH a promise.
1. TESTED The Today’s Sports Credential Program is a result of carefully reviewing every “gain access” situation
experienced over
the past 15 years. We expect this new program will achieve markedly increased results accross the board, for all kinds of events, all
over the world.
2. ISSUING INFORMATION has been added to the credentials which is extremely valuable for gaining access in those particularly tough situations when credentials are being scrutinized for every piece of validating information. Nationality, sex, date and place
of birth add verifiable information often required by uniformed officials in law enforcement, fire and emergency, the military, customs
and immigration.
3. CLASSIFICATION is now based on a full 4-tier range of publishing credits starting at A for yet-to-be published photographers
and reaching to AAAA for those who are published frequently.
4. COMPLETE BUNDLE of all credentials and Internet Verification is automatically shipped to those who enroll in the Today’s
Sports Program. Members no longer have to decide whether the Badge style or Passport style credential works better for the events
they cover or whether covering weekend or after-hours events warrants the Internet Verification option or not. You get it all.
5. INTERNET VERIFICATION All Today’s Sports Credentials holders will be assigned a verification code printed on the face of
all the credentials. This code can be used to verify your assignment status with Today’s Sports magazine by press officials 24 hours a
day EVERY day from anywhere in the world. The Internet Verification site is at www.aipress.com/verify.
6. VERIFICATION UPDATES Now you can go online using your Verification Code and update your own Assignment Verification record. You can change your mailing address, add an email address or change other contact information in seconds.
7. PUBLISHING CREDITS Now you can actually display the names of the publications that have published your photos right on
your Internet Verification site so press officials can see your breadth of experience. And... you can use your Verification Code online
and update your list of publishing credits as often as you like, without having to call the American Image office.
8. RECENT ASSIGNMENTS Now you can display your recent assignments on your Verification site so press officials can see
what kind of events you’ve been covering. And... you can use your Verification Code online to update your display of recent assignments as often as you like.
9. NEW LOW PRICE of only $99 is a full $129 SAVING off the price of the previous program for all the credentials and options. But
remember, the programs are not equivalent.
10. NEW FEATURES Even at the same price, the Today’s Sports program has features enumerated here that aren’t even available
in the previous program. The addition of door-opening “Publishing Credits” and “Recent Assignments” alone may achieve more in
gaining new access as our original Press Program concept born in 1985.
