The

ending its way along the bottom of the wooded slopes, the Aulne provides some stunning views. From Trégarvan to Port-Launay and from Port-Launay to Saint-Coulitz,
wander along the meanders of the. Aulne maritime and on to the canal section and discover
the amazing diversity of its landscapes!
Ever since its creation in the 19th century, the Nantes-Brest canal has boasted a long history of contributing to
Brittany’s economic development. The first stone of the first lock – longer in existence – was laid between Châteaulin
and Port-Launay on 7 September 1811. The canal was opened to navigation in 1836. For almost a century, it constituted
a vital transportation route for the interior of Brittany, which particularly benefitted the slate industry and agriculture.
But this economic role was short-lived. Competition from road and rail transport ruined any hopes of development
based on the canal. The construction of the hydroelectric dam at Guerlédan in 1923 precipated the decline in the
western section of the canal.
This peaceful stretch of water covering 5 departements (365 km) and interspersed with its 238 locks is nowadays used
solely for sailing activities, by yachtsmen and the traditional sailing barges including the Notre-dame de Rumengol, as
well as anglers, joggers, hikers, cyclists and horseriders, thanks to the towpaths (on either side) running alongside the
entire canal.
Set off to explore this magnificent historical heritage, and as you avail yourselves of the rest or picnic areas along the
way, you’ll be captivated by the charm of its gentle curves and languorous banks!

La maison de la faune et du canal
(wildlife and canal interpretation centre)
You stay dry as you duck below the water level to watch
the various fish populating the Aulne, Brittany’s third
coastal river. A combination of a fish pass (or fish ladder)
and a viewing room, the observatory just might allow you
to come face-to-face with one of the great migrators that
swim up the river after its long journey across the oceans.
This fish-monitoring station is also equipped with a video
counting system.
Centre for animals that swim, fly or move around on the
ground. This lock-keeper’s house is the place for you to
discover the canal’s wildlife in all its diversity. Perch, pike,
kingfishers, dragonflies, damselflies and sheep will be
your companions, offering you a glimpse of the canal’s
animal life as you delve into the habits and habitats of
these endangered species that are protected in Finistère.

Lock n° 237: Guilly-Glaz — Port-Launay
Direction BREST
This is the 237th and last maritime lock located on the
Aulne. Controlling the junction between the canalised and
maritime sections of the Aulne, it was inaugurated in 1858
by Napoleon III and the empress Eugénie. After two years
of work, a dam with mobile valves (capable of lowering
the level of the Aulne over several kilometers in just a few
minutes) and a multi-species fish pass were inaugurated
in December 2005. Feel free to pause here for a while; a
picnic area with barbecue has been laid on for you. You’ll
also be able to enjoy watching the black Ushant sheep as
they frolic merrily in their paddock.

12th edition of the Route du sable
18 & 19 June 2016
A gathering organised in memory of the sabliers or sand dredgers
that used to ply the estuary from the Brest roadstead. This takes
place each year on the Aulne Maritime, following a route that
extends from Trégarvan and Rosnoën to Port-Launay and on to
Châteaulin. This nautical outing reunites nearly 70 “voile aviron”
(sail & oar) and traditional sailing enthusiasts in a convivial and
colourful setting.

The ferry crossing of the Aulne between Dinéault and
Rosnoën is known to have existed since the early 16th
century. It is located on an ancient communication route
linking Douarnenez and Le Porzay with Landerneau and
Brest. The slipway at Dinéault probably dates back to
around 1858. Traffic intensified over the second half of
the 19th century, and the ferry used to transport around
25,000 people per year, not to mention cattle, sheep and
vehicles. The traffic also led to the construction of the
ferryman’s house beside the shore. The ferry service
was discontinued in 1951. Linked to the nearby hamlet of
Kerbastard, Le Passage still retains a fountain and a wash
house.

The former hydro-electric factory - Saint-Coulitz
© Ronan Coquil
Built in 1886 and put into operation on 20 March 1887,
this factory enabled the town of Châteaulin to become
France’s third town to be electrified. This significant
event was incorporated into the Saint-Coulitz communal
coat-of-arms.
The communes of Trégarvan, Dinéault, Port-Launay, Châteaulin and Saint-Coulitz
form part of the Armorique nature reserve. But, in fact:
What is the Armorique Regional natural Park
A regional Natural Park (regional nature reserve) is an area of inhabited territory that is recognised at national level for
the richness and the vulnerability of its natural, cultural and landscape heritage. Its Syndicat Mixte (joint association)
sets up a sustainable development project. There are currently 51 regional nature reserves in France, two of which
are in Brittany including the one in the gulf of Morbihan. Covering 125,000 hectares and 44 communes, the reserve
extends over the islands in the Iroise sea, the Crozon peninsula, the bay of Brest, the Aulne Maritime and the Monts
d’Arrée. Its objectives are to preserve and promote the natural, cultural and environmental resources, to support the
leadership, to ensure the management and economic and cultural development of its region, and to welcome visitors
and foster public awareness.
The Reserve aims, through its theme centres and museums, to promote its region. It is the key to exploring the
Armorican massif – the heart of Finistère.

The summit of
the Menez-Hom
and its 360°
panorama
T
he Menez-Hom is the area’s high spot for visitors!
From its 330-metre summit, the curves of the Menez-Hom dominate the bay of
Douarnenez, the plain of Le Porzay to the south and the valley of the Aulne maritime to
the north. Once you reach the top, the view is stunning. The highest point of the montagnes
noires (black hills), it provides a magnificent panoramic view over the Crozon peninsula, the bay
of Douarnenez, the bay of Brest and the hills of the Monts d’Arrée.
At 480 million years old, this is one of the oldest and highest points in Brittany. The Menez-Hom was a sacred hilltop
where the cult of sun worshipping was celebrated, as can be seen from the mounds of stone. The Menez-Hom also
went on to become a strategic point as it was possible for a look-out to watch over the region and keep an eye out
for warnings from the island of Ouessant (Ushant). Whether the threat came from Normans, pirates or the English,
he would be alerted by a beacon and then in his turn would light another one to pass on the signal of danger. The
Menez-Hom still bears the nickname “Yed”– meaning look-out relating to those times. Over the centuries, it has also
become a place for fairs and very famous pardons.
In 2007, the “site Natura 2000 – complexe du Menez-Hom-Argol” came into being. This site incorporates 5 communes:
Dinéault, Plomodiern, Saint-Nic, Trégarvan and Argol. The Natura 2000 site was set up to preserve the biodiversity
of the Menez-Hom, and in particular its heathland and peat-bog landscapes, as well as the Sphagnum pylaseii moss
and the Quimper snail, two species of community interest that are to be found on its slopes. In 2014, the site was
designated as “natural heritage” for its wildlife. This classification has enabled it to be protected without interfering
too much with the sporting or leisure activities such as hang-gliding, model-aircraft flying or paragliding that are so
popular on the Menez-Hom.
The Menez-Hom is also the starting point for walks and beautiful rambles, especially narrated ones during the
summer. With its unique flora and discrete fauna, this is also a vulnerable site, so please respect the environment as
you walk!
Why not: Continue the walk with a visit to the Sainte-Marie du Menez-Hom chapel? It boasts a remarkable

Menez-Hom, the sacred mount of the first Armoricans.
Goddess Brigit. It was in May 1913 that a young farmer from Dinéault unearthed a small bronze
head in excellent condition from beneath his harrow. Some years later, after the Great War,
he decided to check whether the rest of the statue had perhaps remained in the ground. He
discovered a hollow cavity in the ground. Inside there stood a female bronze body. The statue
would have measured seventy centimetres. Sadly, the body was in a very poor state. Admittedly,
this was no Minerva venerated in Rome, but it was a great native goddess. Religious historians
have often found a parallel between Athena Minerva and the Brigit of Irish texts from the late
Middle Ages, the universal goddess of the Celts. The statue is now known locally as “the Goddess
of the Ménez Hom”.
Nowadays, the small bronze head is exhibited in the Musée de Bretagne in Rennes.

of traditional music and dance, whose 57th edition is to take
place from 13 to 15 August 2016.
The legend of King Marc’h
In 1959, a group of friends launched the idea of a small folk
party on the summit of the Menez-Hom on 15 August. Very
soon, the small party turned into a festival! Nowadays,
the festivities no longer take place on the summit of the
Menez-Hom but in the town of Plomodiern and the great
day of 15 August in particular, one of the high spots of the
summer season!
This hill is also a place of legends… King Marc’h (meaning
“horse” in Breton) was cursed with the ugly ears of a
horse. On his death, he was buried not far from the
Chapelle Sainte Marie, to whom he was particularly
devoted. Languishing in hell, they say that his soul will
only be saved when he is able ro catch sight of the chapel
bell from the top of his cairn. Think of this if you stumble
across a pile of pebbles !

The megaliths, 5,000 years ago
In the summer, thoroughbred “Landes de Bretagne ”, and
“Avranches” sheep from the Bergerie du Menez-Hom
located at Le Guilly in Dinéault are installed in the parks
set up by the Finistère council. The Landes de Bretagne
breed (black and white sheep) is particularly well suited
to the heathland, feeding on Western gorse (or Dwarf
Furze), a small shrub that is full of thorns. Within the
remit of the Natura 2000 programme, grazing enables the
habitats to be kept open, thereby fostering biodiversity
and preventing fires.
“Hey Mum, is it really true that they have menhirs in
Brittany?” Yes,they do! Brittany has lots of megalithic
treasures. Around here, keep an eye out for them! A
good many historical traces can still be seen, such
as the menhirs (the one at the Pointe de Tal ar Grip
((Plomodiern) and the Stone-Age Stele (Ploéven), and
dolmens such as the one at Menez-Lié (Saint-Nic) as well
as the Tombelles and the remains of Cromlec’h on the
summit of the Menez-Hom.

historic
heartland
Church of Notre-Dame – Châteaulin
This site constitutes a complete parish enclosure. You’ll notice the ossuary and 16th-century cross, the porch and the
18th-century church tower. A tour of the interior is a must: pillars, altarpieces, statues, pictures… The Notre-Dame
church will be open from 11 july to 19 august (excluding bank holidays), from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm and from 3:30 to 6 pm
on weekdays; with someone on hand to provide information on the history of the site, and the elements worth noting
in the church: statues, pictures, altarpieces, capitals (columns), the tomb of Jethane de Trésiguidy…
Free of charge.
Sainte-Marie du Menez-Hom chapel
Plomodiern
The chapel was built at the foot of the Menez-Hom in 1570,
over the ruins of a Roman chapel. The parish enclosure
comprises a triple monumental entrance (1739) and a
calvary with three crosses (1544). It was formerly a place
of pilgrimage and a very popular venue for fairs. Classified
as a historic monument in 1916, the chapel boasts
magnificent recently-restored pink altarpieces.
Visiting times: from 4 April to 4 October 2016. Every day
from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm.

Saint-Côme et Saint-Damien chapel
Saint-Nic
This pretty Gothic-style chapel was completed in the 17th
century. In the form of the semi-hull of a boat and with its
forest of wrought and sculpted rafters, the framework of
the nave is unique in its genre. Inside, you can see the old
peasant’s sickle that had been an offering of thanks for the
healing of a wound, according to the legend of Saint Côme
et Saint Damien.
A guided tour is available in July and August
Little during the Chapel’s opening hours (Monday to
Extra
Friday: 11am-12pm and 4-6pm, and on Sundays:
4-6pm; closed Saturdays.)

Sainte-Anne-la-Palud chapel
Plonévez-Porzay
This Neo-Gothic-style chapel dating from 1858 has the
distinction of possessing an exterior altar for celebrating
one of Brittany’s most important pardons, which attracts
10,000 pilgrims during the last weekend of August each
year. Inside the chapel, a historical-retrospective video
recording of the pardon is on offer. You’ll also be able
to admire the rather large granite statue of Saint Anne,
weighing around 700 kilos, which is carried during the
anniversary pardons.
Visiting times: All year, every day, from 9 am to 6 pm.
Further info on(+33)(0)2 98 92 50 17.
Notre-Dame de Kergoat
chapel Quéménéven
This large chapel is 35 metres long and 13
metres wide, and includes a 5.5-metre nave.
Its 7 stained-glass windows date back to
the 16th century, as does the statue of the
virgin and child. The chapel and its pardon
were made famous by the painting by Jules
Breton entitled “le Pardon de Kergoat” (1891),
which is exhibited in the Quimper fine-arts
museum. Date of the pardon: The first
Sunday after 15 August.
Visiting times: All year, every day, from 9 am
to 6 pm.
Further info on(+33)(0)2 98 73 53 33.

What is a spring tide?
Tides are the result of forces and movements
of the earth, the moon and the sun.
When the sea level rises very high and
drops very low, these are called spring tides
(coeff >90). In order to plan ahead for your
shellfishing outing, it is essential to consult
a tide timetable – use the Douarnenez times
for our region. In any case, exercise caution,
especially at low tide. However tempting it
is to make the most of the spring tides to go
shellfishing, take care not to get caught out
by the rising tide and being trapped in coves
or on rocks.

of migrating, carnivorous, and cyprinid
fish. All fishing techniques are possible:
whipped-fly fishing for salmon and large
shad, fishing with lures and baits for pike,
pikeperch (zander) or perch, pole fishing,
feeder fishing, quiver tip, float fishing,
Bolognese rods, carp fishing with stalking
rods (for anglers who move from one place
to another) or with stationary rods…
The plain of Le Porzay boasts several
first-class stretches of water where the
freshwater brown trout is king, and where,
here too, you can go fishing “au toc”, with
flies or ultra léger (extremely light casting)
in stunning, unspoilt spots that will totally
delight lovers of the great outdoors.
Do you want to go fishing or take it up?
Go to www.cartedepeche.fr to print your
fishing licence or to check the validity or
reciprocity of your permit if you’re already
an angler!
Great idea: For the holiday: €11 one-day
licence €32 weekly licence.
