Back in 1979, Ardis McCallion, a long-time animal lover, could not turn a blind eye to the reality that there was no one to help homeless pets in Naperville. Understanding a need existed, she put a call out for other animal lovers to join her. The group began meeting in Ardis’ basement and fostering pets in their homes. Naperville Area Humane Society was officially incorporated on August 17, 1979. For ten years, this all-volunteer group fostered homeless and unwanted pets, held bake sales and garage sales to raise money and became the voice for animals in Naperville. After much hard work and a lot of fundraising, the shelter was built on Diehl Road and the doors opened in early 1989. Still very much a volunteer-run organization, the group quickly organized volunteers in shifts and began the arduous task of running the shelter and caring for homeless pets. Over the last twenty-five years, Naperville Area Humane Society has become more than just the shelter on Diehl Road. Now an organization with ten staff members, each bringing her own passion and skills to further the mission, Naperville Area Humane Society is a vital and present member of the Naperville community. Adoption Hours: Mondays and Thursdays: 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays: 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays: 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Location: 1620 W. Diehl Road, Naperville, Illinois 60563 Contact Us: Phone: (630) 420-8989 Email: info@napervilleareahumanesociety.org Visit us online: www.NapervilleAreaHumaneSociety.org We are proud to partner with Loaves & Fishes Community Pantry to ensure that people have the food they need for their pets. After all, the goal is for pets to stay in their homes, keeping families united. Our reading program, Paws for Tales, has been embraced by seventeen local schools and libraries, including many in Districts 203 and 204, as well as all three Naperville Public Library branches. In addition, our humane education manager and education volunteers regularly visit classrooms in the community to share lessons on character education, pet safety, kindness, compassion and empathy. The senior citizens in our community enjoy regular visits from our dedicated Pet Therapy volunteers and their dogs. In fact, more than 80 visits each month are made Angie Wood, executive director to area nursing homes and rehabilitation communities bringing joy and comfort to those in need. Our Behavior Helpline is available to any pet owner facing challenges. We would like to work with people to solve problems before they reach the breaking point and decide to surrender their pet. Since 1999, another service NAHS has been providing is temporary care for the pets of families facing difficult times, whether it is domestic violence or homelessness. Through our Safe Pets Program we are able to keep families together long-term thereby creating lasting human-animal bonds. As we celebrate our 35th anniversary this year, I am proud to be a part of an organization that has grown from fostering pets in homes to providing life-saving and life-changing programs and services to the Naperville and surrounding communities. But we need your help. It takes many hands and hearts to do this work. There are many different ways to get involved at NAHS. Adopt, donate, or volunteer! Become a part of this great community resource by finding a way to get involved that works for you. Warm regards, Angie Wood Executive Director 1 Fostering: Soonie and Her Puppies Board of Directors Officers President - Tom Carroll, RR Donnelley Vice President - Lisa Spaeth, Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce Secretary - Jennie Edwards, MD, Elmhurst Pediatrics Treasurer - Anthony Cervini, Sikich, LLP Directors Jennifer Imburgia, Heritage Moulding Denice Gierach, Gierach Law Firm Rosemarie Breske Garvey, Minuteman Press, Naperville Alex Jones, ConAgra Foods, Inc. She came home every day talking about all she learned and accomplished during that session. By the end, Claire told her mother that “it was the best camp she had ever been to”. From that moment on, the Shallcross family knew they needed to be involved with NAHS long term. That’s when they learned about our foster program and the need for families to help. This past winter, the Shallcross family welcomed a very scared and pregnant lab mix, Soonie, into their home and helped make her comfortable until she was ready to have her puppies. Not only did the family care for Soonie and sit with her during the birth of her nine puppies, they cared for the puppies until they were strong enough to find their forever homes. Which happened very quickly! Fostering is truly a rewarding experience. Whether it’s orphaned kittens too young for adoption, an adult dog or cat needing a break from shelter life, or a mother dog, like Soonie, with puppies, foster homes are vital to the survival of animals in need. As the Shallcross family can tell you, foster families are able to bond with the animals in their care and discover what makes them special. This intimate knowledge gives potential adopters a good picture of an animal’s personality and helps to make sure that each animal becomes a permanent member of the family in their forever home. The Shallcross family saw Soonie was loving with all members of the family, and even after all she had been through, was simply the sweetest dog. This was valuable information we were able to share with potential adopters. Mission Our mission is to promote the humane treatment of companion animals and create lasting human-animal bonds. What’s involved in fostering at NAHS? Foster families care for each animal and help them feel more comfortable and allow them to be themselves. Families feed, socialize, groom, train, and sometimes medicate the animals in their care for the duration of the foster period. They ultimately provide a safe, comfortable, stable environment, and the tender loving care each animal deserves. Vision Our vision is to engage people to compassionately and responsibly create a more humane world. If you have additional questions about our foster volunteer program, please contact Becky Wyatt, volunteer program manager, at (630) 420-8989 ext. 113, or bwyatt@napervilleareahumanesociety.org. Values We strive to deliver services to our community that reflect our integrity, respect, compassion and joy for all people and animals. If you think you’re ready to become part of our life-saving foster community, you can fill out an application online at www.NapervilleAreaHumaneSociety.org. Once you’ve completed the Foster Parent Program Application, you can fax it to us (630-420-9380) scan and email it to bwyatt@napervilleareahumanesociety.org, hand-deliver it, or send it through the mail. Marketing Intern Rachel Maher Continued on Page 3 2 Whiskers and Tails, Spring 2014 Stephanie shares, “I can honestly say, fostering is one of the most rewarding things we have ever done. Many people have said to us, ‘I couldn’t do it, I would get too attached.’ The truth is you do get attached, you get very attached. But there’s nothing wrong with that. You take them in, you love them, and you know that one day they will have to leave you. Yet, you know that they are going to their forever homes. Homes where they will be loved and safe and that you were a very important, critical step in that process. Knowing that you had a hand in saving a life is an incredible feeling, one that I can’t even put into words.” A special thank you to Stephanie Schallcross for sharing this story with us and continuing to be a wonderful advocate for homeless pets and NAHS. Update on Soonie It did not take long for Soonie and the Martin family to find each other! Soonie, now Sadie, was welcomed into her new home with open arms, and everyone could not be more thrilled and in love. The Martin family says Sadie loves car rides and playing in the snow. Sadie has grown into a playful and easy-going dog. Dawn Martin, Sadie’s new mommy, shares: “We would like to thank the wonderful foster family for taking such good care of her and her pups, and the Naperville Area Humane Society for your great care. Sadie is a joy and a welcome addition to our family!” Thank you Martin family for sharing with us and, most importantly, for giving Sadie a warm and loving home! Calling All Volunteers If you or someone you know loves to help care for animals, work with kids, network around the community, or has a passion for raising awareness and funds to support NAHS, we have just the opportunities for you! We are also looking for families interested in fostering. Foster families bond with animals in their care and can provide potential adopters a good picture of an animal’s personality. If you are interested in fostering, please email Becky at bwyatt@napervilleareahumanesociety.org. If fundraising is one of your favorite skills, you may be interested in joining one of our three event-based committees: Volunteer Fundraising, Putts for Pets, or our Black Cat Ball. The Pet Therapy program takes you and your dog, or one of our shelter dogs, to visit area senior centers. You and the pups are sure to bring smiles to some faces! For more information contact Becky at bwyatt@napervilleareahumanesociety.org. To learn more about these committees, email Ellie at ellies@napervilleareahumanesociety.org. If you can’t adopt a senior dog, what a wonderful gesture it would be to help senior dogs at the shelter! Please write “Lizzy’s Fund” in the memo section of your check. Thank you! A common question is “what age is a senior dog?” Average size dogs are considered seniors at 7 years of age. Large breed dogs can be considered seniors at age 5 while small dogs are not considered seniors until around age 10. Here are some ways to maintain the health and happiness of your senior dog: Ways to Maintain a Senior Dog’s Health and Happiness: 1. Take time for basic care. Clipping of nails, brushing their fur, basic hygiene, heartworm preventative and flea protection should be part of your senior’s regular care. Even if you take your dog in for an annual exam, remember, one year in your calendar may be 7 years in a dogs life. Most humans cannot go for seven years between health visits, so more frequent visits may be necessary. 2. Have baseline tests done. A full blood panel should be done by age 7. This will give you a baseline reading for your pet to compare future tests to. 3. Watch the weather. Senior dogs are more sensitive to weather extremes and may not tolerate high heat or very cold temperatures. Consider a sweater in the winter and perhaps a shorter haircut in the summer. 4. Look in your dog’s mouth. Periodontal diseases are common in dogs and may lead to heart disease or other problems. 5. Monitor your dog’s weight. An overweight dog can have more health problems which can affect their quality of life. Why not Enrich your Life and Adopt a Senior dog? One of the most important things to remember is if you could make room in your heart and home for a wonderful senior dog is to visit the Naperville Area Humane Society. Check online or visit the shelter to see if you could give a wonderful mature dog a forever home. Lizzy was a long haired Chihuahua that lived a rich 16-1/2 years after getting a second chance at age 9. Lizzy’s Fund provides all vet, grooming, dental, and even the adoption fees for seniors, aged 7 or older.
