What to bring on your whale watch
You’ll be out on the open ocean for 3-4 hours so you should
bring sun block, sunglasses (polarized if you want to see
the whales clearly through the water) and some warmer
clothing. Wear sneakers or shoes with good traction. Don’t
forget a camera to share your experiences with others back
home. Binoculars offer closer views of whales, birds and the
Provincetown scenery. If you forget anything, don’t worry, we
have everything you need in our store at our Gift Shop.

The Dolphin Fleet and Dr. Carole Carlson, our
Science and Education Director, have developed
a presentation aboard the vessels which
weaves a fascinating story of the “Web of
Life” on Stellwagen Bank – how the smallest
of microscopic plant and animal marine life are
connected to the largest whales in an intricate
food chain which thrives on the unique geological
formations within the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary
and Cape Cod Bay, both critical marine habitats.
Passengers joining us are given our Naturalist’s Guide, printed in full
color, an extensive field guide to Stellwagen Bank illustrating the
connections of great and small creature, finned and winged.
Of course, nothing can really prepare our passengers for the first
sighting of whales blowing after a deep sea dive or tail flukes
flashing as they dive again. We generally see humpback whales in
Cape Cod Bay and Stellwagen Bank during our season; they are
residing in our waters to regain body fat after their long migration
from the Caribbean, where they calf. We frequently see mother and
calf pairs for this reason, and we often observe mothers seeming to
teach their youngsters how to ‘breach’ or leap out of the water from
the momentum of a powerful resurfacing from a long, deep dive.
Passengers forget themselves in the passion of the
moment, shouting and applauding, and in this moment
it can seem that the whales are connected to humans
on our vessels.
On board, with our newly enhanced education and
research program, you can listen to whale vocalizations,
track our vessel’s movement on a chart plotter and view
microscopic life. There are books of interest and a touch
screen kiosk filled with information for you to use.
This is just part of the new program we have waiting for
you. Our goal is that you learn, experience and enjoy
the wonders of this special marine habitat. By cruising
Cape Cod Bay and the Stellwagen Bank National Marine
Sanctuary with the Dolphin Fleet you are, in effect,
taking part in a scientific and educational expedition,
designed to promote marine conservation for all ages.
