Still Attractive
To Some
Investors
A Philadelphia-based company has invested in a regional
newspaper — and it’s not The
Inquirer.
The
Wilkes-Barre
daily
newspaper, “The Times Leader”
has been acquired by Versa Capital
Management L.L.C., 2929 Arch St.;
215-609-3400.
In addition to the daily
newspaper, Versa also ob-tained
several community pub-lications in
the Wilkes-Barre area, along with
websites and digital media firms.
Versa Capital Manage-ment
has a history of investing in media,
food service and manufacturing.
Other specific investments
include
Simplexity,
wireless
and home services online; bell
and Howell, high-volume mail
equipment, and Black Angus
steakhouses.
The total price paid was not

She Reports The News,
And Now, Makes The News
A former Philadelphia Daily
News reporter was a news-maker,
(well, gossip column subject)
recently when she crashed a yoga
class to get a story and photo.
Simone Weichselbaum, currently a New York Daily News reporter,
was after material pertaining to movie/
TV star Alec Baldwin.
She learned Baldwin’s new
fiancé, Hilaria Thomas, was enrolled
in a Manhattan yoga group. A good
opportunity for a picture.
So…being an enterprising
reporter, she took co-worker photographer Enid Alvarez with her.
When Baldwin, 54, heard of
the incident he took exception.
Well, that’s being modest.
Actually, he raged, and
posted Weichselbaum’s photo
on the internet, with a message
saying: “Here’s the nutty bitch who
crashed the yoga class…”
“Shame on the no-talent
trash from the (N.Y.) Daily News
for invading the privacy of 75
people in a yoga class to take a
picture of someone,” he added.
Simone Weichselbaum
Baldwin’s fiancé is 28, young
enough to be his daughter.
In commenting on the age
difference, Philadelphia Daily
News columnist Dan Gross wrote:
…“Perhaps the media snark
about their ages may have, in
part, inspired his outbreak.”
Gross ended his report by
adding: “The usually mouthy
Weichselbaum surprisingly declined
to comment unless and until she
gets permission from her editors.”

Phila. Model
Murder Victim
Vanessa Watson, a local
professional model aka Vanessa
Banks, died recently. She was 26.
Ms. Watson was the victim
of a murder-suicide.
She was shot and killed
by a possessive boyfriend,
Luis McCrea, 31, in the Wayne
Junction station. He immediately
committed suicide at the scene.
Watson had appeared in
Black Entertainment Television’s
“Rip the Runway,” and had been
a runway model during New
York’s Fall Fashion Week.
She also had appeared in
a variety of music videos, and
photo shoots.
She is survived by three
children.
John Bolaris, former longtime Fox 29 on-air weather
reporter, will be back on
television — but not at TV-29.
He left there earlier this
year under cloudy conditions.
However, the nationallybroadcast show “20/20” has
taped Bolaris’ account of his
stormy run-in with two women
in Miami that left him cold.
Allegedly, the women met
Bolaris at a bar, drugged him,
stole his credit card, and used
it to buy thousands of dollars of
merchandise.
He told of the incident in
a featured Playboy Magazine
article.
His account in the magazine
did not endear him to Philadelphia’s
TV-29 management.
“They parted ways,” is how
the station reported his leaving.
The Miami girls were reported as being connected to an
Eastern European theft ring.
Bolaris’ telling of the
incident has already been
taped by the 20/20 show.
At ACT’s press time, the
broadcast date had yet to be
announced.
Money…Marketing…Music Combine
As Format For New Radio Show
The first series of radio interviews on the new, regional
“Music Talk” 30-minute program
have featured a variety of area
music-related executives.
They discussed the nature
of the businesses they repre-
sent, and how their marketing/
advertising is essential.
The show, which airs every
Thursday, noon to 12:30PM on
WWDB-860AM, is produced by

Readers’ Choices In
Special Adv. Sections
Are Questioned
Are the “Readers’ Choice”
Awards published by many area
newspapers and magazines fixed?
Do the publications use
the awards to gain or to please
advertisers?
Cynics think so.
Now comes an apology from
three regional daily newspapers
that suggest all is not kosher in
the voting by readers, and voting
results as published.
The three dailies are the
Bucks County Courier Times,
Doylestown Intelligencer and the
Burlington, N.J. County Times.
The dailies are owned by
Calkins Media.
The “fess up” was made in a
page one apology.
“I regret to inform you that
the voting results for several of
the categories were not accurately
reflected in the special advertising
section in which the results were
announced,” Calkins Media vice
president Thomas J. Spurgeon
wrote in a recent page one letter.
The letter also said: “…an
accurate representation of the vote
totals…was not influenced by our
advertisers or the newsroom.”
More than 200 categories of
local businesses were included
in the special advertising/award
section.
Spurgeon added in the page
one letter, that an award program
will be continued for this year, but
will be “revamped”.
Votes will be tabulated by a
“third-party accounting firm”.
And the beat goes on…

Casino Advertising Now OK
At Lincoln Financial Field
New advertising dollars, in large amounts, are being spread
among area media from the growing number of casinos here.
And, those funds are now reaching secondary outlets.
Case in point: Advertising in and around Lincoln Financial Field.
The buyers are Parx, Sugar House and the Valley Forge
Casino and other regional casinos.
Their ads will now be permitted by the NFL in game programs,
brochures, stadium signage, outdoors and in the concourses and
within local radio broadcasts.
One condition as to content is that all ads must include a
“responsible” gambling message/warning.
Advertisers also must contribute money to the NFL’s
gambling education program.

Trending Now -- Television; No More Cable Bills
By Mike Mallowe
My son just told me that he
decided to get rid of his cable
television. He isn’t switching to
satellite.
“How’s that working out?” I
asked him.
“Oh, fine,” he said. “The only
thing is that now I’m watching
more TV than ever. Did you see
Fringe this week?”
Both of us are big Fringe
fans. I bet that most of you don’t
even know what that show is. It
happens to be a hybrid sci-fi/time
travel/and father-son relationship
show. One-of-a-kind, to be sure.
Its fans are relatively few and
ferociously loyal. Sheer devotion
has kept it going for what will be
its fifth season next year. In TV
they sometimes call this a “cult
following”.
A couple years ago the Fox
network moved Fringe to Friday
nights. That is as close to a
death sentence as a TV show
can be given. People do other
things on Friday nights; if you
are watching TV then, you can
take a seat next to me.
But, guess what, Fox just
renewed Fringe for another
season – its last.
I can’t wait to see what
Walter does next. Walter, a mad
scientist, is the father figure in
the show; he is about as far
from normal as you can get on
this planet. I really identify with
Walter.
How can this be? How does
Fringe survive?
My son is a smart young
guy with exquisite taste.
As a TV columnist from
Los Angeles recently pointed
out, my son watches shows, not
networks.
He watches his favorite
shows on his lap-top, or on a cell
phone, or on a tablet, or on some
other kind of mobile device that I
can’t even name.
This is a form of “second
screening”. Second screening
means that you have another
screen in front of you – tablet,
lap-top, game, and so forth –
while you watch TV. In my son’s
case the second screen is all the
TV that he watches.
The New
TV Consumers
Television is all about
loyalty now, and personal choice
and my son and I discussing
the latest episode of Fringe; or
his wife, Rie, and him enjoying
Japanese cartoons on their
computer – she’s from a city just
north of Tokyo.
When they get really bored
during one of San Diego’s
frequent rainy seasons, they
make little YouTube broadcasts
(their cat, Dink, is a favorite
subject) and post them on the
Internet. At work, he often makes
streaming videos, too.
TV is running as fast as
it can to try and keep up with
him and all the other second
screeners out there.
My son and his wife are
the new crowned heads of TV
consumers.
Mike Mallowe
The
networks
would
practically kill for their loyalty:
they are highly educated,
bountifully employed, willing
to spend money on important
purchases, and between the
ages of 18 and 49 – the magic
demographic.
Much of TV programming and
nearly all of the advertising that
appears on television is directed
at them and at nobody else. Yet,
technically speaking, my son and
his wife don’t even have a television
anymore. But the networks still
have to cater to them.
According to an authoritative
story that just ran in the LA
Times, by Meg James:
“When viewers watch a TV
program with a tablet device,
they tend to check their email,
hunt for sports scores or seek
additional information about the
show or a commercial they were
watching on the big screen.
“A

a year: that “second screen
viewing” appears to augment the
TV viewing experience rather
than steal away viewers.
“Nielsen’s State of the
Media: Advertising & Audiences
report found that men, when
watching TV and using a tablet
simultaneously,
were
more
likely than women to look for
information related to a TV
program they were watching
(39% versus 34%). Women
were more inclined to seek
information related to a television
commercial (24% versus 21%).
“Not surprisingly, teenagers
with tablets were far more apt
to visit a social media site while
watching TV than were older
baby boomers and seniors (62%
versus 33%).”
People couldn’t stop texting
about it.
And, yes, it is a seedylooking reality TV show, replete
with weeping teens and the boys
who got them pregnant, and their
families.

Know Where to Advertise
Let me tell you about another
show; it’s called 16& Pregnant. I’ve
never seen it; I don’t plan to unless
someone wants me to write a
column about it. Like this one.
It’s a fairly long-running
reality show about exactly what
the title says: being 16 and
pregnant. Heavy stuff for the
kind of viewers who know the
names of all the stars on Jersey
Shore – in other words, young,
technically-savvy viewers.
Why is it important?
Because in the world
of tweets and social media,
16&Pregnant is an unstoppable
powerhouse.
If you want to reach the
people who watch it with your
advertising message, you better
know where and how to find them.
Wasting your money on cheap,
local buys on major network TV is
not a very good place to find them.
The week of April 22nd
16&Pregnant was among the
top five subjects – in the whole
world -- on the list of the hottest
trending topics on the Internet.
Think about that. Not
politics, not the economy, not the
price of gasoline, but the overemoting kids on 16&Pregnant.

Major Area Trade Mags Mark 35 years

Local magazine publisher Kane Communications

is now celebrating its 35th anniversary, along with
three other significant milestones for its publications.
Retail trade magazine Souvenirs, Gifts & Novelties (SGN) turns 50, leisure entertainment industry
trade publication Tourist Attractions & Parks (TAP) is

Souvenirs, Gifts & Novelties is the largest trade
magazine for the retail industry in any retail category,

We don’t watch daytime
soap operas anymore like my
grandmother did; but the social
media and Internet world does;
they watch their new soap operas
– like 16&Pregnant and share their
reactions, emotions and consumer
decisions with their friends.
My daughter is a clinical
neurophysiologist; she has a
two-and-a-half-year-old-son. She
knows all about 16&Pregnant; so
do her cousins and many of her
friends and the young women
she works with.
They’re all second screeners,
too – and highly educated, and likely
to be well-paid when they settle on
their careers – I am sure you see
the pattern developing here.
You better know what makes
these second screeners tune-in,
if you have any hope of reaching
them and understanding their
consumer and brand preference
choices.
A TV Show Can Win
Without Millions of Viewers
How about if I throw out
another program – Mad Men.
The critics love it; it wins all
the awards. It premiered recently
on AMC, a cable network that
cable systems pick up as basic
programming for their viewers.
It isn’t what we used to call
pay-TV, like HBO or Showtime.
AMC is closer to the Walmart of
basic cable. Mad Men premiered
this season to an audience of
3.5 million people; about half of
them were aged 18 to 49. A good
week for The Walking Dead, a
pages per edition, and is larger than 95 percent all
medical journals and physician magazines published
in the world.
Additionally, Tourist Attractions & Parks is larger
on a per-page basis than any leisure entertainment
industry trade publication. History “Kane Communications took troubled publications that were ready to fold and turned them
around,” said Scott C. Borowsky, who founded the
company 35 years ago with a series of acquisitions
beginning in 1977 with the purchase of the Kane
Beverage Report.
show about zombies, also on
AMC, draws roughly three times
as many viewers.
But, Mad Men is a genuine
cultural icon; it has made stars
out of obscure actors and has
single-handedly brought back
all those ugly skinny-tie male
fashions of the 1960s.
But, guess what, 16&Pregnant
kills Mad Men every week, even
when they broadcast re-runs.
The buzz about Mad Men
is beyond massive. However, by
no stretch of the imagination is it
even a border-line TV hit.
It also doesn’t sell very
much advertising.
This is another anomaly of
TV today.
A TV program makes it
or fails today based on much
more than raw numbers. The
social media interaction that is
displayed by those 18 to 49 yearold viewers/followers/consumers
is at least as important as
conventional ratings.
By the way, what are the most
popular programs on television so
far this year, as of May 1?
--Sunday Night Football
--American Idol
--NCIS
--Dancing With the Stars
Each one pulls in about 18
to 20 million viewers per week.
In re-runs, NCIS can approach
10 million; it’s easily the most
popular show on television.
So, what really makes the
big networks rich? NFL football,
two amateur-hour game shows,
and the U.S. Marines.
That’s TV.

One of the alleged hold up men was captured
about a hour after the incident.
He was identified as a neighborhood customer
of Pulcini’s.
Pulcini was freed after posting bail.
While at City Paper, last summer, he was an
intern. He wrote reviews on live music, and also authored a sport’s column for the papers web site. It
was called, “Notes From the Nosebleeds.”
Pulcini was scheduled for a hearing after ACT
went to press.
It is his first arrest.
Any disciplinary action by Temple against Pulcini is
not known.
Raymond Betzner, a Temple spokesman, said
the university is prohibited by law from making public any such discussions.
Incidentally, Pulcini has on his Linked-In page

Annoying Lost Time From Preventative Healthcare
I’m not into giving time to
medically-related practitioners
— when I’m only a potential patient.
Yes, I’m into giving time to
medically-related practitioners
— when it benefits them — as I
have done for over 50 years by
providing to them ways to gain
new patients via the professional
advertising and communications
channels of my firm, American
Advertising Services. (If interested, 484-562-0060).
But back to the topic of there
personal thoughts:
Lately, with my wife, Sandy’s constant pushing, reminding, pushing, encouraging —
and pushing, I’ve been seeing
a growing number of health professionals.
Here they are from the head
down to my feet.
…Optometrist
…Audiologist
…Dentist
…Dermatologist
…General Practitioner
…Cardiologist
…Physical Therapist
…Podiatrist
…Also the druggist, and
labs for tests
Note: No mention here of
Funeral Directors, as “Death is
bad for your health”.
Moving Forward. Constantly
I continue to develop, and
run our business divisions.
I continue to be first one in
to the office, last one out.
I continue to recycle the
manila folders, save paper clips,
SAVING INJURED SEA MAMMALS
use the rubber bands that come
with the U.S. Mail
(Wow! Has that diminished!)
And…make
the
sales
calls…consult with clients…interview applicants…give ideas…
teach (“Do It Now”)…follow-up.
So where do I find time for all
the medical “preventive” visits?
I try for early AM pre-work,
lunch time appointments and
post-work hours- -and am pretty
good at being the practitioners
last appointment of the day.
Frankly, I think my 8AM4:30PM, Monday to Friday, business routine is instrumental in
my medical checkups being only
checkups.
There is an upside to medical appointments.
I really enjoy reading magazines.
Thanks to waiting rooms,
I read “Time”, “People”, and
specialty magazines — where I
have no interest. Most of them
are out-of-date.
Fortunately, I’m not out-ofdate... As I keep telling myself.
~ ~ ~
On Another Subject:
I had my first experience recently with The Inquirer under its
new, and current owners.
For 40 years I’ve had seven-day home delivery.
The same family, to best
of my knowledge, provided the
service. It was on my driveway
about 7AM, thus I enjoyed The
Inquirer with breakfast before
leaving for office.
But on a recent Friday, no
Inquirer.
The next day, Saturday, no
Inquirer.
I called the delivery family.
They said, “After 50 years,
we were fired”.
They were gracious in giving me a telephone number to
call — which I did.
First came automated questions. Being a bit (more than a
“bit” my wife would say) hard of
hearing, it wasn’t easy to decipher the taped questions.
But I concentrated and did,
and — got a live person.
Stephen Strassler (center), president and founder of Reviva Skin
Care Labs, Haddonfield, N.J., is leading the business community
to join in his firm’s efforts to help offset federal elimination of funds
to the only New Jersey agency involved with saving injured or sick
seals, giant turtles and other sea mammals that wash ashore on
N.J. beaches.Strasser’s role is to help gain funds for the Marine
Mammal Stranding Center, Brigantine, N.J. Here he is pictured with
his wife, Judy, and Bob Schoelkopf, founder of the Marine Mammal
Stranding Center, while presenting a donation from his own firm.

Joe Ball
Her name: Bernice.
Since few people these
days are named Bernice, I figured she was long-term at The
Inquirer.
She was.
I explained the no-delivery
situation. She asked my home
telephone number. Then asked
that I wait. I did.
And she was back, surprisingly, quickly.
“Your paper will be delivered
within the hour,” she said.
“Can I get Fridays also?” I
asked.
“I’ll see,” she offered.
Well, the paper wasn’t delivered in a hour.
But it did come in about two
hours.
No Friday, however.
But, I’m not one to quibble.
I tip my hat to Bernice.
Hey there Bernice… use
this to ask for a raise — and job
security.

Major Film/Video Awards Judged by Area Pros
Political Ad Costs
Soaring for Internet
With major elections coming up, Internet news web sites will be
inundated with “pre-roll” political advertising.
And the advertisers will be paying the highest dollars ever.
A Fort Washington, Pa. Republican-oriented online advertising
consultant, Rick Masterson recently informed Joseph N. DiStefano,
a Phila. Inquirer writer, that the cost for those commercials, are up
5x what was paid in 2010.
This year’s charge will be about $45-$50 per 1,000 online views.
The audience has boomed due to the explosion in number of
social media and smart phone devotees.
And also, because the money is there, from the Super PAC’s
and billionaire-funded groups.
Schedules are being purchased now, for October and November, Masterson said.
AREA JUDGES FOR U.S. INTERNATIONAL FILM & VIDEO FESTIVAL included (left to right) Samuel Speiser,
General Manager, WWDB-AM 860; Eleen Matthews, Studio Ten TV/Video producer; Stan Hochman, Phila.

photo producers and advertising
personnel were selected to be
judges for the 2012 U.S. International Film & Video awards.
Categories included Television News: Investigative/Special
Reports, Continuing News Stories, and TV Newscasts.
Also, Public Affairs Programs
and Breaking News Reports.
The judging was held within
Studio Ten, inside the NBC, TV10, WPHAT building, on City Ave.
Judges were:
• Steve Levy, former Phila.
TV anchorman
• Stan Hockman, Phila.
Daily News icon sportswriter
• Roseanne Raffa, Adult
Div., John Robert Powers
• Dawn Bundick, Marketing
Mgr., Hard Rock Cafe
• Connie Peipher, Commercial Photographer
• Eileen Matthews, Studio
Ten TV/Video producer
• Samuel Speiser, General
Mgr., WWDB-AM
Chairman of the panel
was Joe Ball, publisher of ACT,
founder of American Advertising
Services and producer of several area radio shows.
Among the entries judged
were submissions from Philippines, United Kingdom, Australia, Leyte, and Japan.
Elena Cruz, assistant to the
president of www.PhillyBizMedia.com coordinated the event.
