A NOTE
FROM THE
EDITORS-IN-CHIEF
FROM THE VERY
BEGINNING OF 2012, we knew it was going to be an eventful
year with our new expansion and several new generation stores
planned, with new initiatives and partnerships in the works, a
new sponsorship, a new watch line and, of course, many new
jewellery collections to be revealed. Which brings us to this, the
second edition of our Mouawad Magazine—highlighting the past
year in all its wonder, surprise, excitement and success. So with
our usual enthusiasm and Mouawad style—and just in case you
missed anything—this year’s magazine showcases all the new
products, new business and new events as they unfolded in 2012.
EXPANSION OF NEW GENERATION BOUTIQUES
As we look back, we can see that 2012 was year full of hard work
and remarkable achievements for the Mouawad brand. Through
our continued expansion into the Middle East and Persian Gulf
regions, we welcomed five new boutiques: one in Doha, Qatar,
a new flagship store in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, an elegant free
standing boutique in Beirut’s duty free airport, our first-ever
showroom in Kuwait City, and the recent opening at Muscat’s
Opera Galleria spreading our love of fine jewellery and watchmaking to the clientele in these exciting jewellery markets. With
several more stores set to open in the regions in 2013, seems our
work is just beginning.
CELEBRITY
While we consider all of our customers and anyone who wears
our products to be ambassadors of our brand, when a celebrity
chooses Mouawad as a fitting accompaniment to their style and
image, well… it’s just an added blessing. Lebanese superstars
Najwa Karam, Ramy Ayach, Maya Diab, and Joe Ashkar did just
that in 2012 when they chose to wear Mouawad in their newest
music videos—joining the ranks of the many celebrities over the
years who have selected Mouawad for the brand’s beauty and
refined image.
SPONSORSHIP AND PARTNERSHIPS
As 2012 got under way, we welcomed our first-ever sport
sponsorship when we signed up to sponsor international
powerboat champions Omar Danial and Gary Ballough—
a perfect match for our soon-to-be launched Grande
Ellipse Sport watch collection, which graces the deck of the
powerboat. The Mouawad powerboat placed 2nd overall in

2012’s X-CAT Powerboat World Series held across the Middle East.
And we can’t wait ’till next year’s racing circuit to get started.
2012 also marked the beginning of two new partnerships. First,
with RAK Pearls Holding—the first and only producer of cultured
pearls in the United Arab Emirates—marking the beginning of a
partnership aligning pearl cultivation and trading with fine jewellery-making.
This year, we embarked on creating an entire new line of
prestige timepieces, the first of which, the Grande Ellipse
Royale, introduced recently, ushering in the new Mouawad
Genève watch collections—elegant, robust and contemporary watches for discerning men and women of distinction.
In the coming months, Mouawad will continue to introduce
the full line of the Grande Ellipse collection with its Sport
and Sport Ville series, followed by other collections such as
the ladies La Griffe Collection in 2013. To manage the new
Mouawad watch line, our brother, Alain Mouawad will be
heading up the Mouawad Swiss Watch Manufacturing division. Alain is a veteran watchmaking expert residing in Geneva and has been responsible for the luxury sport watch
brand, Blacksand—internationally recognized for unique designs, high-quality massive cases of titanium, ceramics, gold
and tantalum and for their movements—officially certificated
by the COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres, the
Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute). With Alain’s
expertise onboard, we are confident that the Mouawad Genève watch collections will be at the forefront of fine Swiss
watchmaking and we are very excited to be working closely
with Alain and welcome his invaluable expertise.
Alain spent a year at Heinz Heimann, DMB & B (award-winning Zurich Advertising Agency) before launching his own
Pro-Mond SA Communication Agency to manage the marketing communications for the watches of the Mouawad group.
Alain is also an avid collector of watches and his passion for
horology led him to develop very sophisticated watch mechanisms such as those found in the Blacksand Collection. The
chrono mono pusher (BLACKSAND Calibre 2002) developed
in-house, offers a blend of tradition and modernity. The mechanism highlights the traditional column wheel, along with an
unconventional approach to the global movement aesthetic
with its personalized components. More complicated calibres
are about to be launched within the next months.
DIAMOND MANUFACTURING – FROM ROUGH TO
JEWELRY
Mouawad has occasionally in the past bought large rough diamonds and manufactured them. Later this year, however, we
made a commitment to rough manufacturing by forming a
joint venture with Premier Gems in New York. The new company is called Premier Diamond Alliance, and through the
alliance Mouawad is now a DeBeers Sightholder. This step
further integrates our group upstream. We now buy rough
diamonds; manufacture them, design our jewelry, craft the
jewelry in our own workshops, and sell them to our customers through our own retail stores. We control quality from
a very early stage and through that integration we provide
more variety, innovation, exceptional art, and greater overall
value to our customers.
NEW MASTERPIECES, BOUTIQUE COLLECTIONS
AND WATCH LINE
With the unveiling of the Snow White Princess Diamond
Watch at the 2012 Doha Jewellery and Watch Exhibition in
February, Mouawad reaffirmed both the brand’s legacy of
haute joaillerie and its luxury watchmaking traditions with a
one-of-a-kind 18K white gold women’s timepiece meticulously
layered with 223 colorless diamonds at 106.93 total carats. We
also introduced five new boutique collections, an extension of
our most popular collection, Flower of Eternity and an entirely
new line of bridal jewellery.
Alain, like brothers Fred and Pascal, grew up in Geneva, Switzerland, and later pursued his education in the United States
at Pepperdine University. In 1991, Alain returned to Geneva to
further his education by pursing a double major in marketing
communications and in sociology at Webster University.
ABOUT ALAIN MOUAWAD
Alain Mouawad, fourth generation member of the Mouawad
family, found a passion early on for horology and the luxury watch business. This passion coupled with his marketing expertise has driven Alain to make his mark in the
timepiece industry with his involvement in running Robergé, launching the Blacksand collection and now heading the Division of the Mouawad Watches. In creating
the BLACKSAND Collection, Alain wished to pay tribute
to the know-how and the tradition of Swiss watchmaking, while offering a decidedly different product. Created
for a clientele of free-spirited connoisseurs—personalities for whom luxury symbolizes time that is chosen—not
dictated by market-driven status-enhancing conventions.
Today he is the Guardian of the Mouawad Watch Division and
is responsible for the entire Manufacturing Division in Geneva and at Les Breuleux in the Swiss Alps, including after
sales service, the Mouawad Watch Academy, and the marketing of timepieces worldwide.
So, we hope you will enjoy revisiting the past year at
Mouawad as much as we do. And as we leave behind 2012,
we look to the future with hopes and aspirations of what
next year will unveil. At Mouawad, we’re always seeking new creative endeavors and new ways to enchant our
customers and the world of jewellery and watchmaking.

GIA Monograph Report – The Grand Esmeralda Suite
Gemological Institute of America issued an official monograph report on the Grand
Esmeralda Suite, detailing the origin and quality of the suite’s emeralds and diamonds. Experts
at GIA spent several weeks examining the gems of the suite in regards to their origin and
treatment. Using tried and true microscopic techniques such as Raman spectroscopy—
that uses lasers to measure scattered light and wavelengths to identify the material—GIA
was able to determine scientifically the origin of emeralds used. Upon completing their
examination, GIA issued their Lab Monograph Report on the Grand Esmeralda Suite—the
first report of its kind, detailing the suite’s bespoke magnificence and to highlight that the rare
and magnificent emeralds used are of true Colombian origin and are untreated.

IN SEPTEMBER 2012, Singapore’s Ultra

Mouawad launched the creation of a special
cocktail that costs a sparkling $32,000—The
Jewel of Pangaea. This prestigious partnership
between Pangaea, the world’s most luxurious
nightclub and Mouawad, the world’s most
exclusive jeweler, was created by Singapore’s
award-winning mixologist, Ethan Leslie Leong.

Not wanting to just create a tasty drink with a precious diamond thrown in,
Ethan created the champagne cocktail with premium products such as 1985
Vintage Krug Champagne; golf-flake-infused Richard Hennessy cognac; a
smoked raw sugar cube infused with a mixture of apple wood, hickory wood
and lemon wood, and smoky Jerry Thomas bitters. While we can’t give away the
whole recipe, we can say that it was topped off with a Mouawad Triple X 1-carat
diamond ring suspended by an 18K gold chain into the glass. The result, the most
expensive cocktail ever created in Asia.

meralds have been prized for over 4,000 years
and their excavation can be traced back to the
pharaohs of ancient Egypt. Cleoptra has been
widely acknowledged for bringing the emerald
to prominence through excavations at Wadi Gamal, later
known as Cleopatra’s Emerald Mine. Fine emeralds must
possess not only a pure verdant green hue, but also a high
degree of transparency to be considered a top gem. Emeralds of this quality can fetch up to tens of thousands of
dollars per carat.
While emeralds are found and mined in many parts of the
world, a Columbian origin emerald is typically considered
the finest pedigree of emeralds due to their rarity and
minimum degree of inclusions. According to the Gemological Institute of America’s lab report “the emeralds
contained in the necklace and earrings of the Mouawad
Grand Ellipse all hail from this renowned locality.”
With seven of the most spectacular examples of emeralds
in the world, all of which are of superb shades of green
and with unequalled natural transparencies, the Mouawad
Grand Esmeralda Suite is destined to join the canon of the
top emerald jewelry in the world. These seven marvellous,
untreated emeralds are complimented by the exceptional
artistry and craftsmanship of Mouawad and are further
festooned with an impressive array of diamonds.

Since time immemorial the season of spring has been revered and celebrated as a symbol of rebirth when nature brings forth new life. It represents the pinnacle of hope, when mankind honors the miracle of our very existence.
Man has always looked to the skies as a source of intrigue, knowledge and meaning. Celestial constellations have the power to fascinate and
take on a divine nature. Among these Orion stands out for its undiminished power, inspiring man for centuries across cultures and geographies.
The Rites of Spring Diamond Suite is a dazzling celebration in itself, skillfully combining exquisite large pear-shaped white and yellow diamonds.
Amid the light, the contrasting gemstones appear to dance playfully, taking on a vitality of their own, protected by surrounding smaller walls of
icy white diamonds. Locked in a never-ending embrace, nature’s precious diamonds remind us that life is a source of eternal hope.
As if born of the cosmos, the Grand Orion Sapphire & Diamond Suite is a lavish creation, bringing forth explosions of light and color, bursting
with radiance in every gem. From the deep blue hues of the sapphires to the blindingly white power of the diamonds, this set emanates a heavenly
splendor, destined for a woman whose beauty transcends the earth.

The sheer white diamonds of the Serenity’s Kiss Diamond Suite evoke an overwhelming sense of purity, recalling dramatic winter snowscapes born
of a fairy-tale imagination. Brilliance and clarity reign in this breathtaking set that resonates with all the innocence of an age when the soul’s dreams,
magic and make-believe still prevail.
This stately suite is full of regal presence with its ornate and majestic mix of opulent violet blue tanzanites and icy diamonds. It is from the earth
beneath the shadows of Mount Kilimanjaro that the remarkably deep blue tanzanite gem can only be found.
As if kissed by the mists of time, diamonds of a perfectly limpid, colorless nature are nestled within cushions of smaller diamonds, creating a nurturing
embrace of protection. As an ensemble Serenity’s Kiss is destined to enchant for eternity, inviting all who wear it to dream again once more.
56
Hewn from nature and crafted by Mouawad master artisans, the tanzanites are joined by diamonds in a suite reminiscent of Baroque splendor.
The set’s imperial design hints at historical tales of courtly love, once played out amid the royal palaces of Zanzibar and among the Sultanas of
Oman. The Royal Blue Diamond & Tanzanite Suite is a set truly fit for a princess, if not a queen.

Beauty, wealth, knowledge, love, mysticism… all these and more are evoked by the symbolism of the peacock. The bird’s magnificent plumage is laden
with meanings, thus giving rise to myths across time and placing the creature as an essential embellishment to sumptuous palaces of the Orient.
The rarity of deeply verdant emeralds of Columbian origin has inspired myths and mobilized men in epic adventures. Indeed this is the land of legends,
to which explorers have been lured for centuries inspired by tales of immense wealth and buried riches. Spanish conquerors were among those who
returned from Columbia laden with precious emeralds.
Mesmerizing sapphires set amid diamonds recall this royally endorsed plumage in the Plumes de Paradis Diamond & Sapphire Suite. Hand-set amid
diamonds as a dazzling ode to glamour of the noblest dimensions, the eye-like sapphires capture the gaze of all who cross their path. As if imbued with
a mystical quality, this suite is for a woman whose very presence emanates a powerfully enchanting allure.
To this fantastic backdrop, the Columbiana Diamond & Emerald Suite brings forth exquisite emeralds wrapped in a design fit for a princess. Imbued
with a breathtaking, regal elegance, as if crafted for a Spanish infanta or royal consort, the Columbiana Diamond & Emerald Suite dazzles with all the
glory of a sumptuous history and noble provenance.

MISBAHA

Marked by its refinement, tradition and elegance, the Mouawad Misbaha collection is the result of a journey
embarked to capture the essence of an age-old and universal practice and bring it to the vanguard of modern-day
fine jewellery. Called by many names, prayer beads have long symbolized our emotional, mental, and physical
states and wearing and holding them serves as a familiar, tactile reminder of where and who we are each moment.
Crafted in the familiar, traditional stones like black onyx, lapis, green agate, tiger’s eye and carnelian, the Mouawad
Misbaha carries on the tradition with reverence to the inherited and customary quality and style of these sublime

PAPILLON
FLORAL WINGS
Nature continuously inspires us with its intricate designs and breathtaking beauty, pushing the limits of creativity
ever higher. And even within nature’s cornucopia of diversity, little compares to the natural, delicate beauty of
butterflies and flowers. Their wings and petals, peerless in their daintiness and fragility and wondrous in variety,
strike a tenacious pose against nature’s unforgiving garden. Yet their frailness and vulnerability continue to be
overshadowed by their rare, natural beauty—leaving us forever in awe.
The Papillon collection pays homage to these delicate natural wonders through a collection of fanciful, jewelencrusted designs combining floral patterns with the wings of butterflies. Handcrafted in 18K yellow gold and
sterling silver and featuring a colorful array of gems, these uniquely elegant pieces capturing the essence of
nature’s beauty and refinement are destined for the hearts of women everywhere.
Peridots, tsavorites, black sapphires, blue topaz, amethysts, pink tourmalines, garnets and diamonds complete
this enchanting, recherché collection available in rings, pendants, earrings and bracelets.

ABOUT MOUAWAD
MOUAWAD – Enchanting customers with
magnificent jewels since 1890
Led by 4th generation Co-Guardians Fred, Alain
and Pascal Mouawad, and backed by more than
a century of excellence in its field, Mouawad
remains a family business built upon artistic
excellence, superb craftsmanship, trust and
relationships. Mouawad designs, manufactures
and sells its own exclusive jewelry and timepiece
collections ranging from boutique items to
objects of art and magnificent haute joaillerie
masterpieces. The Mouawad brand has penetrated continents across the world, while retaining
its eminent position as jewelers to royalty, high
society, celebrities and those that appreciate the
finest standards of dazzling craftsmanship. The
passion at Mouawad has always been to enchant
and build lifelong relationships with customers
by offering a wide range of jewels and timepieces
for all occasions.
In addition to its jewelry and timepiece design
and production, Mouawad also manufacturers
rough diamonds as a Diamond Trading Company (DTC) Sightholder through its joint venture
company, Premier Diamond Alliance. Diamonds
and gemology have always been a passion for
the Mouawads and besides crafting fine jewelry,
over the years the Mouawad family has acquired
some of the largest and rarest diamonds in the
world and many of these historic gems carry
Mouawad as part of their designated name. The
family’s ongoing support of the global industry
through research and education led to third generation, Robert Mod uawad, receiving a Lifetime
Achievement Award from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and of having the GIA
campus named in his honor. Guinness has honored Mouawad on three occasions with world
records: in 2010 for the Mouawad 1001 Nights
Diamond Purse—the most valuable handbag in
the world, in 2003 for the Very Sexy Fantasy
Bra—the most luxurious and expensive piece of
lingerie ever made, and in 1990 for the Mouawad
Splendor—at the time, the most expensive single
pear-shaped diamond in the world.
The Mouawad vision is to continue the rich
heritage of Mouawad by maintaining the focus
on fine jewelry and watches while widening
distribution through contemporary and
accessible price points in order to increase the
reach of the brand internationally.
