Our Harvest Restaurant uses only the freshest produce, while assorted food outlets throughout the event cater to all tastes. 5 Feature Gardens Feature Gardens > DON BURKE BURKE’S BACKYARD FARM (G3) > ROYAL BOTANIC GARDENS EVERY PLANT AND GARDEN TELLS A STORY (G1) With the help of Jim Fogarty, Nigel Ruck, lily Van Epen, Matt Leacey and Brad Baxter, Don will construct a modern backyard farm garden that the public can watch evolve over the four days of the show. Visitors will have the opportunity to contribute to design decisions of the ‘work in progress’ garden. On the surface everyone enjoys a garden as beautiful, peaceful places for repast, but walk with one of us and you will hear the stories of history, science, wonder and magic that each plant and display tells. Every plant and garden tells a story, you only need to listen and learn and you will love them as we do. We have divided our garden into four displays, each telling a different story about our Parklands and Botanic Gardens. Burke’s BACKYARD > LNA DESIGNED BY CHRIS SLAUGHTER EMBRACE THE LANDSCAPE (G2) ‘Embrace the Landscape’ will provide a singular platform that enables people to become aware, informed and positively guided of the right way to approach a development, renovation and investment. It is a rare visual opportunity to create something of true uniqueness and cross-pollination, as a collection of supporting industries and disciplines. 6 > NGINA DIRTY IDEAS FOR EVERY DAY GARDENS (G4) Any space around any building or outdoor structure has the potential to be a garden! Forget about size, if you have air and light, you too can be a gardener and enhance your life. The team at NGINA set about creating mini-gardens for the most unlikely places. This includes such unlikely combinations as: converting a casserole dish into a herb garden, growing a tea plant in a teapot, or courgettes in a letter box; or why not use the old bath for fresh herbs, veggies or flowers in your own back yard. Then there’s the old wardrobe for a vertical garden, hang flowers on the washing line and an old barbecue makes a superb herb garden! 7 Inspirational Gardens Inspirational Gardens > CHRISTOPHER OWEN Tread Lightly (G9) > ADRIAN SWAIN Refugium (G8) Christopher Owen is a Sydney based landscape designer and contributing writer for the award winning blog Garden Drum. A low maintenance, living refuge which accommodates entertaining, relaxation and reflection. Large concrete slabs punctuated by recycled timbers and a recycled brick feature wall. Materials are complimented by interesting foliage types and a colour range of silver, purple and deep green. Mature trees anchor the plantscape and provide form and scale. > ANDREW FISHER TOMLIN The Unexpected Garden for St VINCENT’S Curran Foundation (G13) USTRALIAN GARDEN SHOW 2014 ONCEPT ELEVATION 2 For those with early onset dementia gardening and gardens can be a lifeline, giving coping strategies and a sense of place. The Unexpected Garden is first and foremost a great garden that any visitor to the Australian Garden Show Sydney might be attracted to having. However, on deeper inspection, the visitor will find that the garden has therapeutic qualities and specific elements that support a person with dementia. The garden is structured along a simple flowing path, opening to provide a shaded space with water feature and bench, then onto an open space with a pavilion for shelter. The exploratory element is important, allowing someone to wander, to place themselves within the space, but not be faced with dead ends and decisions about direction that might confuse them. A second layer to the garden is a gentle sensory experience allowing someone to experience the world through especially fragrance and touch. Not only is this achieved through planting with species such as Dianthus “Memories,” but also through elements such as the textures of the garden pavilion and bench, AUSTRALIAN GARDEN SHOWwithin 2014 a bronze water bowl by Will Wilson, and the water CONCEPT ELEVATION 1 the surfaces of compacted stone. The St Vincent’s Curran Foundation is the fundraising organisation for St Vincent’s Hospitals in New South Wales and is the Official Charity Partner of the 2014 Australian Garden Show Sydney. The garden steps up on large format Anston ‘Sorrento’ pavers to an entertaining area that is a combination of oversized pavers and cypress ‘snake skin’ decking. The entertaining area is partially enclosed by rolled steel forming an arched pergola, creating a comfortable framework between you and the outside world, while casting some interesting shadows over the decking and AUSTRALIAN GARDEN SHOW 2014 CONCEPT JULY 2014 pavers on sunny days. With comfortable, interesting 1:50 @ A2 seating for a five minute ‘cuppa’ in the sun or an afternoon of laughs and entertaining with friends, this area is ready for any occasion. Sandstone boulders and soft planting form the outside edges of this garden while a screening hedge for privacy runs along one side and the back of the entertaining area. A tree canopy in the back provides foliage height and under planting and the rest of the garden beds are a rich tapestry of foliage colour, texture and shape. 9 Inspirational Gardens Inspirational Gardens > MYLES BALDWIN Open Woodland (G14) > PHIL WITHERS My Island Home (G10) Open Woodland is a garden conceived from a desire for a layered planting style and how it relates to contemporary architecture. As a landscape designer/horticulturist that works throughout Australia, Myles has a passion for a multitude of planting types, textures as well as clever functional spaces. To display this in Open Woodland, the plantings devolve from the rigidity of strong monoculture hedging and minimalist gravel, to mixed shrubberies, copses of trees with understory ground cover. > PENNY HAND & KATE LOW, NORTHERN SYDNEY INSTITUTE TAFE Learning Garden (G7) The Learning Garden encompasses design, environmental management, construction, urban horticulture, arboriculture, turf and plant propagation. As we weave our way through this garden we can think about how we learn, what we learn, and how much we have to learn. It is a lifelong journey. 10 My Island Home will bring a piece of paradise to the show, featuring a timber beach hut and bridge surrounded by tall palms and colourful succulents. > PETA DONALDSON with Natural Design and Green Art Gardens The Pavilion (G12) The Pavilion is a celebration of mid century architecture designed for social interaction, entertainment and a little frivolity. The garden is designed with four designated areas; the entrance, pavilion, pool and a lawn area.
