MATADERO MADRID Square
Plane of full Matadero Madrid place
The placement of 20 mobile structures into the square of Matadero
Madrid, a contemporary art centre, united every part of this square
and provided the flexibility needed for this changing and dynamic
exhibition. Each piece of this outdoor project was designed with a
standard European scaffolding system, catered for 6 – 8 people
and was completely independent from the other as each one had
its own solar covering and lighting, the latter being sensitive to
daylight, switching on automatically as the sun went down. As the
judges´ panel explained, first prize was awarded to this project “for
its adaptation of the atmosphere found in a matadero (a
slaughterhouse), its constructive language, simplicity to mount,
mobility, economic factor and feasibility.”

The aim was to create a summer bar terrace for the area situated
between the port and beach, near the Formula 1 circuit, which was
being held for the first time in Valencia.
The project revolved around the design of large structures, whose
aim was to provide shade from the sunlight during the day and to
project images and moving lights at night. We used five thousand
metres of criss-crossed material, whose shadows projected stripes
onto different surfaces. These stripes were to remind people of
the patterns created by the shadows of the traditional cane roofs
from their childhood, typically found covering the beach bars of
the Mediterranean Coast. The canes provided refreshing shade in
these locations, as the spaces between them allowed a light breeze
to circulate that conventional awnings could not. Our goal was to
obtain the same results but by using material with a more
contemporary look, done so with our specially designed crisscrossed fabric.
Parts of these structures were fixed like spiders onto the existing
building (built circa 1911 it was left unfinished and has remained
that way since), while the other structures formed a type of pergola
above the tables, marking the diagonal line between the bar and
restaurant area and the chillout zone.

A bar/terrace Project for the Vertical restaurant, one of Valencia’s
most prestigious destinations, situated on a rooftop with impressive
views; from there one can see the port, the Formula 1 circuit, the City
of Arts and Sciences and Valencia itself.
An innovative system of heated flooring from the Spanish brand TAU
has been used for the exterior. The versatility of the system has allowed
us to integrate heaters which transform into ice buckets as the seasons
change, as well as other installations that can be modified at any given
time with great ease.
Another of the interesting features of this project is that instead of
making a traditional horizontal landscape that would take away from
the space for public use; we incorporated a vertical landscape including
some cubical structures that house the VIP areas.
This project was conceived from the concept of providing an exterior
space for smokers, given that as of January 2011 smoking will be
prohibited in all Spanish bars and restaurants. As well as this important
utilization, the terrace (previously not used) will provide amazing views
of Valencia which are currently not available to customers.
Project ongoing.
