New look for Gants Hill
Gants Hill has re-opened after 66 weeks of refurbishment and £7.5m
of building works to transform the area.
The roundabout has been remodelled and
resurfaced with a new high friction anti skid
surface to last for ten years. New stainless steel
lighting columns have been installed, new CCTV
has been installed to keep the area safe, and there
is new paving with a mix of traditional slabs and
granite blocks creating wide spill out areas for the
cafés and restaurants.
As well as the improvements to local
infrastructure two new developments have
opened – Images and Invito. Invito offers 122
residential apartments and the new Images
development which has jus t won a prestigious
design award offers 160 one and two bedroom
apartments.
These complement the Citygate House
development which was completed in 2009 with
125 apartments.
New shops and facilities are already moving
into the area - a new Sainsbury Local has opened
and Inner Beauty – a women only gym and luxury
spa is opening later this year.
There is going to be new signage
based on the Legible London
scheme as piloted in Bankside and
Bloomsbury, (shown left). Cycling
facilities have been improved and
there is new street furniture like
benches and bins giving the
whole area a co-ordinated
contemporary feel.
Next year a major new public
artwork by Wolfgang Buttress is
going to be installed, (pictured right).
Wolfgang has already produced two
eye catching sculptures – Halo and
Angel Wings - for the fashionable
shopping centre of Angel Islington
and other works for Stamford,
Nottingham and Bristol.
Gants Hill held its official reopening on Friday 1 October followed
by three days of events culminating in
a mini-festival on the Sunday.

The
History
of
Gants Hill
Gants Hill was originally a small settlement on the main road from London to Colchester. The name Gants Hill
is believed to derive from the le Gant family, who originated from the Belgian city of Ghent. Ralph le Gant was
steward of Barking Abbey in 1321, and Richard and Gilbert le Gant were stewards in 1456.
Gants Hill roundabout 1933
Gants Hill was an agricultural
district until after World War I,
when the Corporation of London
obtained government subsidies to
create an estate of 2,000 cottages
just to the west of Cranbrook Road.
In 1921 the government withdrew
its subsidies, and the project halted
with only 220 homes built.
In the 1920s, Eastern Avenue was
built. Bradford developer Charles
Henry Lord bought the abandoned
site and converted the cottages
that faced the Eastern Avenue into
shops. The junction with Cranbrook
Road gradually became a local
centre with shops, offices, banks
and a cinema. The famous Gants
Hill roundabout first appeared
around 1928.
Gants Hill is the most easterly
underground station that is
actually underground. The station
is entirely beneath Gants Hill
roundabout. Construction began in
the 1930s, but was stopped during
the Second World War. During the
war the station was used as an
air raid shelter and Plessey used
the tunnels for manufacturing
munitions.
Gants Hill tube station was
designed by architect Charles
Holden who was inspired by the
stations of the Moscow Metro.
The barrel vaulted lower level
concourse is even known as the
Moscow Hall. Gants Hill station
was opened on 15 December 1947.
The Savoy Cinema was opened
in 1934 and became the Odeon
in 1949. Its art Deco architecture
made it a popular local landmark.
It was demolished in 2003 and the
new Images development now
stands on its former site.
