THE LAST OPEN COMP OF THE YEAR
December’s open competition was a great success with ten entries on the table, even though
two people entered two models each a pretty good show from the 14 members who attended
on the night. Quite a varied array of subjects and congratulations to all who entered.
“RAF A400M Arrives at Brize”
The RAF took delivery of the first Airbus
A400M Atlas aircraft during an official
ceremony, held at RAF Brize Norton, on
27 November 2014. The arrival of ZM400
heralds the staged delivery of a further
21 aircraft, in a schedule expected to be
complete by 2019.

“...Hello Lakenheath”
20-22: Brighton Modelworld
The Pentagon has announced plans to
base two squadrons of F-35s at RAF
Lakenheath. The UK base, home of the
48th Fighter Wing equipped with F-15C
and F-15E Strike Eagle jets, will be the
first U.S. Air Force installation in Europe
to host a unit flying the 5th Generation
Joint Strike Fighter.

“Goodbye Mildenhall...”
‘‘All hell broke loose’’’
On 28 April, 1944, four German
E-Boats opened fire on a convoy
of eight US ships making their way
to Lyme Bay on the south coast in
a practice exercise ahead of the
D-Day landings.
The disaster that followed - in
which about 800 servicemen lost
their lives - was deemed by US top
brass to be so grave they ordered a
complete information blackout.
Now a British millionaire is planning
to restore one of those German
E-Boats in honour of those who lost
their lives.
It has been announced this month that
several historic air bases in the UK will be
closed. RAF Mildenhall is by far the most
significant of these bases, being more
or less continuously operated by the US
Air Force since 1950. Prior to this RAF
Mildenhall played host to RAF Bomber
Command during WWII; first with Vickers
Wellingtons, then Short Stirlings, before
finally the mighty Avro Lancaster called
it home. As part of the King George V’s
Silver Jubilee in July 1935, the RAF chose
Mildenhall as one of two venues to host
a royal review of the RAF. Thirty-eight
squadrons with 370 aircraft lined up for
this royal review by King George V, Prince
of Wales and Duke of York. The pictrure

Fast Fleet Tankers
A marine engineering company in
southwest England has been selected to
customize four new military tankers being
built in South Korea to support the new
Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers
and other Royal Navy warships.

A deal awarding the work to A&P
Marine’s facilities in Falmouth, Cornwall,
to fit out the new 37,000-ton Tide-class
tankers with UK-specific equipment is
due to be announced in the next few
weeks, a Defence Ministry source said.
The tankers are being built by the South
Korean shipyard DMSE using a design
from the British company BMT Defence
Services as part of the MoD’s Military
Afloat Reach and Sustainability program.
