Nobody’s are the same, but you leave them all over everything you do.” This annual report has your fingerprints all over it. With every gift you make, you are putting your values into action and connecting your philanthropy to what matters most to you. It is a meaningful gesture that also leaves a lasting impact long after the gift is made. Your donations to the “It All Starts Here” campaign contributed to a year of incredible achievements. The Oakville Hospital Foundation ended the 2014/15 fiscal year with total fundraising and investment revenues of $17.8 million achieved at a 15% expense ratio. We had $15.1 million in net revenue available this year to transfer for equipment purchases for the new Oakville Hospital, in addition to the $24 million transferred this year that was raised in previous years. Since the beginning of the campaign $51.9 million has been granted toward the equipment needs of the new Oakville Hospital. We owe this success to you. We are grateful for the many individuals and organizations we partner with in the community. This past year, more than 10,000 donors supported the priority equipment needs of Oakville’s new Hospital. Although we can’t name every donor in this report, we are thankful for your gifts and your commitment. Our success, and the Hospital’s, can only be achieved with every single one of our donors. As we look forward to the opening of the new Hospital later this year, we also look back at this incredible journey and the thousands of individuals who have brought us where we are today. This journey is not over. The future of our new Hospital begins on opening day and the Foundation will continue to work with you to ensure our skilled and compassionate healthcare team is equipped to save lives and improve lives in the years ahead. Armed with a new sixyear strategic plan, we are confident this will propel the Oakville Hospital Foundation forward as we deepen our relationships in the community and continue to advocate for the ongoing needs of our Hospital. Whether you have been supporting Oakville Hospital for years or you just joined our donor family, we value your generosity. Thank you. Tina Triano Chief Executive Officer Christie Henderson Chair, Board of Directors Excellence This is a very exciting time for the new Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital as a tremendous amount of work has been done by Hospital staff and physicians to finalize equipment needs. Many years of preparation are now coming to fruition over the next few months with more than 39,000 pieces of equipment and furniture arriving at the new Hospital. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the Foundation granted nearly $37 million to Halton Healthcare this past year – the largest grant in the Foundation’s history – to support these priority clinical and non-clinical equipment needs for the new Hospital. Major procedures will take place in state-of-theart operating suites featuring a fully connected computer network. The pharmacy’s new robotic pill picker machine will sort and package medication dosages and ensure they are delivered to the correct patients. Halton Healthcare was honoured by the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) for excellence and leadership in capital project management. The organization was recognized for its leadership on the new Oakville Hospital capital project, one of the largest healthcare redevelopments in Ontario, for setting a new standard for inpatient care design in Canada. 2 On February 14, 2015 OTMH celebrated its 65th anniversary. Shortly after, one of the first items to move to the new Hospital was the original OTMH cornerstone. It will be installed in the main lobby. Pictured below is one of two CT scanners being delivered to the new Hospital. A CT scanner combines special x-ray equipment with advanced computers to produce multiple images of the inside of the body. These cross-sectional images can then be examined on a computer monitor or printed. Thousands of pieces of equipment have already been delivered, including a new MRI. Magnetic resonance technology is one of the most sophisticated technologies available in medicine today. The new Hospital will have three MRIs. “we are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” - aristotle 3 Leadership Everyone appreciates getting extra value from an investment and donors are no exception. Match gifts offer donors an incentive to give by increasing the impact of their gift. They are attractive because both the donor issuing the challenge and the donors responding to the match are excited to see their contributions leveraged. always believed that you support the hospital in your community and that you lead by example, as do I,” said Betty Birmingham. Matching challenges motivate action; that is why these challenges from leadership donors triggered nearly $10 million in contributions during the campaign to equip the new Oakville Hospital. Through careful planning, gifts associated with a match, either as one responded to or one offered, achieved $20 million. “As a family, philanthropy in Oakville is our focus,” said June Cockwell. “The motto that Ian and I grew up with, unity is strength, is one of our core values. By working together towards the common goal of a new and improved hospital, we as the community of Oakville are making a contribution that will outlast us all.” In 2010, Terry and Bonnie Jackson were inspired to create a living legacy in the name of their great friend, the late Dr. Michael McCulloch, who did so much for so many in Oakville. As members of the Foundation’s Campaign Cabinet they issued a challenge that matched every dollar raised by Dr. McCulloch’s family, friends and associates, with a goal of realizing $100,000 to name the Diabetes Centre Registration and Waiting Area in his honour. Amarna has a long and generous history in our community of leadership gifts and numerous successful matching donations for local charities. The goal of Amarna’s 2010 commitment to the Oakville Hospital Foundation was to inspire donors to “elevate their giving sights” when considering their financial support to the campaign. The strategies varied – matching from 30% to 100%, depending on the gift size and the appeal – as did the audience – from new donors to event participants to monthly donors. Thousands of donors responded to the challenges and over the next four years it triggered further gifts that exceeded $6 million. That same year the Birmingham family generously pledged $3.5 million to the new Oakville Hospital with $500,000 used to match community donations. Any donation made to the hospital’s Oncology Department was matched, dollar for dollar to purchase equipment for the new Hospital’s Cancer and Medical Day Care Clinic. “My husband Bruce 4 Early in the campaign Amarna and Ian and June Cockwell committed $6 million to the Hospital which was used for multi-strategy community challenges. “Amarna’s transformational gift is a testament not only to the generosity of June and Ian but to their vision and commitment to being architects “all leaders lead by example... whether they intend to or not.” - unknown of change in our community,” said Tina Triano, CEO of Oakville Hospital Foundation. “The donations that this challenge inspired far exceeded the matches. This is really what this unique gift structure achieved for our fundraising efforts and our Hospital.” OTMH physicians and staff also embraced these matching challenges. Physicians were offered two matches. The first, a dollar-for-dollar match by Amarna and the second, for those who contributed a gift of publicly traded securities, it was matched again, dollar for dollar by Charlie and Sallie Caty up to $250,000. The tax incentive made this a very efficient and cost-effective option for those who had appreciated securities in their portfolio. Volunteers also turned to their colleagues and friends to issue a match. Past Oakville Hospital Foundation Board Chair and Capital Campaign Cabinet member, Frank Lochan, joined together with another donor to create a dollar for dollar match (up to $350,000) to inspire new community members to support the Oakville Hospital’s equipment needs. For the past three years, the annual Candlelight Ball also offered matches to donors giving to “cause-within-a-cause” from former Foundation Board Chair Bruce Galloway, leadership donor Mark Thompson, and another donor who wishes to remain anonymous. With these matches, “cause-within-a-cause” raised $1.1 million in the past three years. Additionally, the campaign benefited from companies who make it a practice to match the generosity of their employees, including Bell Canada, Brookfield, Deloitte, IBM, Javelin Technologies, O’Connor MacLeod Hanna LLP, Pelmorex, and more. As community support for the new Hospital grew, another important healthcare cause became a focus. With one in five Ontarians under the age of 18 struggling with a mental health issue but only a fraction of children and youth receiving care, the Navigator Program was incubated in Oakville to close the gap. A $1.25 million matching gift campaign was launched where $1.00 donated to the Navigator Campaign triggered an additional $2.50 dollars from two foundations, the Mental Wellness Network and Amarna. In one year, the goal was reached enabling the Hospital to sustain this much-needed program well into the future. The Navigator Program receives no government funding making the match campaign even more important. Together, these visionary leadership donors and the matches they issued triggered $20 million in contributions from thousands of donors. In the end, donors were pleased to have their gift go further, the matchers were delighted they encouraged more people to give, and the Hospital is grateful to have the community’s support. 5 Community For the past four years, Tour de Halton has been getting our community moving. The annual cycling event attracts riders of all ages and skill levels and inspires them to fundraise for the Hospital. An incredible $130,000 net was raised through pledges and event sponsorship in 2014 thanks to the 140 participants and the event volunteer committee led by Jeff and Bonnie Flemington. The Birmingham Bank Bed Challenge has been an Oakville tradition since 2005. In 2014, the banking community opened the event to everyone in Oakville and invited non-bank companies to participate in the race. Budds’ BMW, Jack Astor’s, McDonald’s, and Oakview Funeral Home took up the challenge and entered their own beds into the competition. Thanks to everyone’s fundraising efforts, more than $133,000 was raised to purchase new beds for the Hospital. The Gujarati community generously pledged $508,000 to help fund the equipment needs of Oakville’s new Hospital. The donation is from seventeen donor families who were inspired to come together and make a leadership gift to the Hospital. “As local residents, we are privileged to live in a community that offers us so much, especially this new state-of-the-art Hospital that will be here for our families and others during times of illness,’ said Kirit Patel, P.Eng Senior Fellow P&WC (retired), the donor instrumental in bringing this gift to the Hospital. “Together, we wanted to show our gratitude by giving to an organization that provides exceptional health care to all patients.” In recognition of their gift, the Inpatient Rehab South Unit in the new Hospital will be named in their honour, along with numerous rooms within it. 6 “A community is like a ship; everyone ought to be prepared to take the helm.” - Henrik Ibsen Throughout the year, several donors held events to raise awareness about the equipment needs of the Hospital and expand the Foundation’s community of donors. Cabinet member Paul Strongman hosted a dinner event for his neighbours and raised $10,000 in gifts. Cabinet members Eve & Peter Willis and Bonnie & Terry Jackson hosted a Warm Hug Club event at the Willis’ home inviting more than 50 friends and neighbours and raised more than $160,000. Oakville Hospital Foundation board member Loren Francis and her husband Mark hosted a Caribbean-themed event in their home that raised more than $50,000 for the equipment needs of the new Hospital. Board member Jeff Flemington and his wife Bonnie hosted a Warm Hug Club event in their home that raised $65,000. Each of these wonderful events were special occasions that celebrated the generosity of friends and neighbours in our community. The 2015 Scotiabank Skates event raised more than $235,000 to support the critical health care priorities at both Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and Trillium Health Partners. The three-day event featuring an old-timers’ hockey tournament, a free family fun skate, and a youth hockey skills clinic was spearheaded by the Scotiabank Commercial Banking team, led by Stephen Taborek, Matt Macdonald, and John Phillips. OTMH physician Dr. Michael Heffernan was the event’s top fundraiser and his team, the Oakville Hospital Rangers, were the top fundraising team. Proceeds from the event were earmarked for the purchase of the third MRI for the new Oakville Hospital. The event returns in January 2016 and will once again benefit OTMH and Trillium Health Partners. 7 Faith St. John Paul II School pledged their support to the Warm Hug Club, a Foundation initiative that is raising $900,000 to purchase blanket warming cabinets and IV pumps for the new Hospital. The school raised funds by hosting numerous events including a Valentine’s Day cake raffle. Organized by the St. John Paul II School Council, more than 100 cakes were baked and purchased and the event was embraced wholeheartedly by students, staff, and members of the greater community. In 2015, Tony Ceelen, Principal, St. John Paul II Elementary School; Camillo Cipriano, Superintendent of Education, School Services, Halton Catholic District School Board and Jeff Mamer, Chair, Parent Council proudly presented the remainder of their pledge to the Foundation. The Interfaith Council of Halton advocates on behalf of many faith groups in Halton and currently has representatives from eight major faith groups: Bahá’í, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism, and Zoroastrianism. In 2014, the Council pledged to donate $100,000 to support the equipment needs of the new Hospital. The fundraising efforts, led by Faith Fundraiser Chair Pravin Sharma along with co-chairs Rabbi Stephen Wise and Reverend Canon Dr. Darcey Lazerte, are being well received throughout the community and they are close to reaching their goal. In recognition of their generosity, two Intensive Care Rooms and a sub-waiting area in the Emergency Department will be named in the Council’s honour. Diwali, the “festival of lights”, is an ancient Hindu festival that spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness. In 2013, a group of dedicated volunteers organized the first ever Oakville Diwali to benefit the Oakville Hospital Foundation. Last year’s event built on their inaugural success with more than 500 people attending the festivities. In just two years, Oakville Diwali has become one of the biggest community partner events for the Foundation. The 2014 Oakville Diwali raised more than $135,000 for the Hospital thanks to the generosity of everyone in the room and the incredible efforts from the volunteer committee led by Chairs Vijay and Sushma Agarwal. 8 Since 1954, the Knights of Columbus Marian Council have been active in Oakville and Halton Region supporting many community programs, events and charitable organizations including the Oakville Hospital Foundation. Over the years, they have raised more than $210,000 for OTMH, including their $100,000 campaign pledge to help fund the equipment needs of the new Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. This generous pledge was recently achieved thanks to the leadership of Grand Knight Steve Maloney and the fundraising team led by Conor Boyd, Steve Novak and Rod Rafauli. The Knights organized several unique fundraising initiatives including the Rock-toberfest event, the annual Knights of Columbus Oakville Hospital Foundation Lottery Calendar and an annual Edgewalk on the CN Tower. In recognition of their generosity, the Nephrology Communication Centre in the new Hospital will be named in honour of the Knights of Columbus Marian Council. “Faith is taking the first step even when you can’t see the whole staircase.” In 2014, the Halton Sikh Cultural Association generously pledged $25,000 to the Oakville Hospital Foundation. In recognition of their gift, a single patient room in the Medical/Surgical department will be named in their honour. Many individuals joined together to support this pledge and rallied the community for support. - Martin Luther King Jr 9 Compassion Last April, 71-year-old Jim Baine was heading to Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital to pick up his wife Elsie after her short hospital stay. He parked his van in the temporary patient pick-up area outside the hospital’s front doors where his wife was waiting for him in a wheelchair. After getting her safely into their van, Mr. Baine was returning the wheelchair when suddenly everything went black. “The next thing I knew, I was on a stretcher in the Emergency Department (ED), surrounded by a crowd of faces including doctors, nurses and my family, all looking quite concerned and asking me if I was alright,” said Jim. Jim had suffered a heart attack. Luckily someone saw him collapse and called for help. Dr. David Fernandes, along with Samantha Marchand and Sarah McCarthy, two nurses from the OTMH Emergency Department and Valene Lovett, HHS Respiratory Therapist responded to the “code blue” being paged overhead. By the time they reached the resuscitation room in the ED, Jim was breathing on his own intermittently. “One shock with the defibrillator started his heart beating regularly again,” recalled Dr. Fernandes. “Tests revealed that his arteries were severely clogged and this caused his heart to stop. 10 Fortunately, due to the quick response, his heart muscle was not damaged and he did not suffer any neurological impairment. This was a wonderful example of good teamwork.” Jim was moved to the intensive care unit at OTMH for further tests and observation. Dr. Jan Orfi and other attending cardiologists kept an eye on him until he was transferred to a nearby regional cardiac centre for a successful quadruple heart bypass operation. Jim has since completed Halton Healthcare’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at the Oakville YMCA and has made a full recovery. Nearly a year after his experience, he made a donation to the Oakville Hospital Foundation and shared his remarkable story of recovery. “I am profoundly grateful to the team who got my heart beating again, who brought me back to my family,” said Jim. “The life-saving care I received at Oakville Hospital inspired me to give back by becoming a donor.” “Perhaps you’re a grateful patient like I am. Whatever reasons you have for giving, I want to thank you. You’re a big part of the reason things turned out for me the way they did.” Photo by Eric Riehl – Oakville Beaver On January 2, 2014, Melissa Murphy was admitted to Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital eight days past her due date. “My labour was progressing slowly but normally,” recalled Melissa. “The way I usually explain it to people is everything was fine until all of a sudden it wasn’t.” At some point during labour, the umbilical cord had become tightly wrapped around the baby’s neck and this stress caused Melissa’s baby to pass meconium which he ingested and aspirated on. “Let me tell you, the team at OTMH work fast,” shared Melissa. “Before I knew what was even happening, a respiratory therapist appeared and extra nurses were in my room. I was not aware how severe the situation was, just that there were people around me and I felt like I was in good hands.” Melissa’s son Owen was born at 4:09 p.m. but he was not breathing. “There was a nurse. I don’t know her name and I probably couldn’t even tell you what she looked like, but she stood by my head and she told me that I had done a great job, that my baby was here and that I was a mom. I didn’t understand what was happening. Owen wasn’t crying. No one was taking my picture holding my newborn. I didn’t know how much he weighed. I didn’t even know what he looked like.” Owen was quickly taken to OTMH’s Special Care Nursery and given oxygen while specialists determined his care plan. “My low risk pregnancy had turned into a high risk situation in a moment. I remember that despite our fear and heartbreak, my husband and I felt so overwhelmingly grateful that we were at OTMH,” recalled Melissa. “Owen was given the best chance at a healthy, happy life, thanks to the team at OTMH and their state-of-the-art equipment. The nursery was equipped with everything that they needed to provide him with the care he needed in the first, most vital hours of his life.” Today, Owen is a happy, healthy toddler. “He brings more happiness and joy to our family than we could have ever imagined. Not a day goes by that I do not count my lucky stars that my husband Nick and I are Owen’s parents and for the care he received at OTMH,” shared Melissa. “We are and will be forever grateful to the Hospital and the Special Care Nursery because they gave Owen the best possible chance he could have been given at life. And in saying that, I would also like to thank all the Oakville Hospital Foundation donors. You may know your donations fund medical equipment. You may know the Hospital is appreciative of your support. But what I need to make sure that you know is that without people like you, our happy ending may not have been as happy.” “If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. if you want to be happy, practice compassion.” - dalai lama xiv 11 Accountability Audited Financial Statement For the year ended March 31, 2015 The Oakville Hospital Foundation is conscious of its responsibilities and is accountable to those in the community who place their trust in us.
