the HARD HAT NEWS News about the employees and events of T. W. Frierson Contractor, Inc. 2013 • FIRST EDITION YOUNG GUNS I saw the movie trailer about the movie YOUNG GUNS — set in 1878, New Mexico, that was about an older benefactor who picked up younger gunmen from the road to work on his ranch and teach them how to read and be civilized. Weird as it sounds, I thought of Ernest Taylor and Winston Hickman, the two gentlemen that brought me in from the road twenty-two years ago, and taught me most of what I know about our business. I started to reminisce about the good ol’ days and the times gone by, but also marveled at how the generations have evolved and the skills transitioned. I tell people all the time that teaching someone a skill is an ego trip. Teaching makes us feel important, and propagates the root skills that are necessary in the design and construction industries. Del Hickman and Dean Taylor are by all measures, young businessmen; but after a true tempering during the stresses of the last half decade, they are savvy leaders on the downhill end of the average age of our company’s employees. Looking to the future I am greeted by TWF’s “young guns.” I have to start with Sara Waggoner. Sara is our Director of Marketing and Client Relations. This past year Sara was selected as NAIOP’s Developing Leader of the Year, and finished her term as President of the Associated Builders and Contractor’s Developing Leaders group. We argue about the best way to approach almost everything, but it’s her passion, tenacity, and responsibility that make her such a significant asset. Luke Maddox is our youngest Project Manager… in physical years only. Luke started his career with TWF in Florida on the Freedom Pointe project. His skills in managing the complete project were visible quickly as he was exposed to multiple project types on this $70 M job. Luke is now working in Decherd, TN on Nissan’s greenfield design/build engine plant. Joe Street once commented that he wasn’t worthy to carry Luke’s briefcase! Shannon Patterson is a second generation TWF Superintendent that has been with the company for many years; he is currently managing a large project for the Nissan folks. Jason Watson is another “legacy” that comes from corporate bloodlines, and has been delivered to supervisory ranks for a variety of unique projects. Josh T.W. FRIERSON CONTRACTOR, INC. 1330 Murfreesboro Road Smith was recently promoted to an Assistant Superintendent role; he has Nashville, Tennessee 37217 OUR MISSION T. W. Thanks to the hard work of everyone at T.W. Frierson Contractor, Inc., we have had the opportunity to grow and we foresee that this will continue in the future. This is truly a great challenge for us as we strive to meet and exceed the expectations of our customers. We have mentioned recently at our quarterly meeting that we are seeing some difficulties in finding the next generation of craftsmen and craftswomen to help position us as the strongest self performing general contractor in the mid South. We need to be able to replace some very valuable people in the field over the next five to ten years which means we need good, smart, hard working younger people who enjoy the challenges and pleasures that come from constructing a building with your own hands. The trade schools that helped our industry years ago have become non-existent and the farming communities that once dominated the landscape in counties surrounding Nashville have dwindled as well. This is a great opportunity for us a company to grow and build a base of younger people who will take this company to the next level. In the very near future, we will need the next group of laborers, carpenters, ironworkers, foreman, assistant superintendents, and superintendents that will make this company truly the best in class and unique to the Nashville market. Your help finding and training the next group will be one of the keys to our continued success. We firmly believe that our differentiator is our field group. You are the ones that take a set of drawings and specifications and turn them into a unique building. Please continue to be the best that you can and continue to take the pride that you have so deservedly earned through your hard work and dedication. Contributed by Dean Taylor O ur company has a history of treating the people that make up T.W. Frierson Contractor, Inc., with the utmost respect, and they in turn treat our clients in the same manner. We have a great company not only because of the leadership that we have in the field and office, but because of the character and integrity of all of our employees. The average tenure of the office staff is close to 15 years, while the Superintendents’ average tenure is over 25 years — not many other construction companies can say this. This is a true testament to all of our T.W. Frierson Contractor, Inc., employees for making this a great place to work. At our recent Quarterly Safety Meeting several employees were recognized for service milestones. Those who received service awards were: 5 YEARS Julio Pineda Lukas Maddox Jeffrey Waggoner Ruben Salazar 10 YEARS Christopher Ozburn Wayne Bates Claudia Webb RETIREE & FOUNDER Thomas Rowlett 15 YEARS Joe Street Allen Giles Joe Matlock Ben Eberle Guy Harris 20 YEARS Keith Mooneyham 25 YEARS Anthony Campos 30 YEARS Joe Slate NAIOP Awards Gala NAIOP is the commercial and industrial real estate organization that the company has been actively engaged with on several levels since the late 1990’s. At this year’s annual NAIOP Awards Gala, Sara Waggoner was recognized as the “Non-Broker Developing Leader of the Year” for the organization. Young Guns... continued shown great abilities in advancing the required skills to manage a construction project. I have known Ben Eberle for 15 years. He started as an Architectural Designer, then moved into a Project Management role, and is now a Vice President of the organization. His character, ethics and meticulous nature define how he approaches life and his craft. Ben is critical to our pre-construction efforts, and a key cog in the machine that we utilize to get work. Folks like these “Young Guns” are clearly the future of the Frierson organization and we are on sound footing as the next generation takes its rightful place. Other exciting news from the Gala: The Singer Road project won the “Industrial Lease of the Year.” 2012 Volume Builder of the Year Design Systems Builders was recognized as the Southeast Region’s “2012 Volume Builder of the Year” at Butler Manufacturing’s National Sales Meeting. Since 1992, we have been blessed to receive this prestigious recognition 15 times! Contributed by David Bockian The Hard Hat News 2013 • First Edition F E A T U R E D P R O J E C T S T.W.
