Milo 4th of July Essay Contest
By Dominic Wadle
When we sell out, we go to Mary Konrad’s house
where we can see the fireworks. That is where all of
my family and I watch the 15 minute firework show.
After that, my mom and I go out in the night, pick
up all the signs, and take down decorations, and
wrap up the celebration of America.
After I get this all done, I think to myself about the
real reason of the 4th of July. It’s the day that the
Declaration of Independence was signed, when all
Americans became free. That’s the real reason why so
many Americans have such a happy, fun filled,
amazing day. It took me a long time to express how
much The Milo 4th of July means to me in this essay
which I’m very happy to share with you today.
Thank you for supporting the Milo 4th of July.”
“The reason I like the 4th of the July is because
I wake up in the morning with butterflies in
my stomach.
I think that’s only because I realized that I have to
dress up just to get all muddy in the Milo Filthy Fun
Mud Run. I get there and just the thought of the
word “GO!” gets to me, but by the time we reach the
mud, I dive in to every portion I find. After I get
congratulated, I head home, shower, and grab my
walkie-talkie, and find out where my mom, Erica, is.
She does so much for the Milo 4th of July. It’s hard
to express the hard work put into the 4th from all of
the commitee. Once I find my mom, I ask her what I
can do to help set up, whether it’s putting up signs,
taking stuff somewhere, or really anything she needs.
By the time I get done, it’s parade time. The Milo
4th of July parade is one of the biggest events that
really pulls the people in. Last year, I was the “Prince
of the Milo 4th of the July”, and when I was riding
in the convertible through the streets, Main St had a
lot of people, but once I got near the park, IT WAS
PACKED!!! I couldn’t see one open spot in the park.
Me and the Princess, who happened to be my
cousin, Ali Wadle, were both handing out candy . By
the time we got to the other end of the park, we had
only one box of candy left and we started out with
three. Since the Milo parade is usually so big, I’m
able to grab a second ride through the parade in a
firetruck or ambulance with my uncle, Brian
Hertzler, who is a firefighter for the Lacona Fire
Dept. After the parade is over, I’m on my own for a
little while, which usually means hanging out with
friends, buying food or drinks, or just being plain
silly, which a lot of people say I’m really good at.
Toward the end of the night, I stay around the
park to draw the names for the Milo 4th of July
raffle, which I’ve heard is a good one this year. All
the kids get on stage and pull lots of tickets out of
the big barrel. By the time that is over, everyone just
lingers around waiting for the big moment of what
everyone loves after a great day of celebrating
America...fireworks!!!
My mom, usually another commitee member, and
I, all hop on a golf cart, and drive out to the ball
parks and other peoples back yards near where the
fireworks go off, and sell foot and a half long, red,
white, and blue GLOWSTICKS, which all the kids
love. Almost all of the kids are asking their
parents,”Ooooo, Mom, Dad, I want one of
those...can I have one, please???” And they usually
go quicker than what we expect.

Milk Money Scholarship Fund
Library News
We are taking donations for a special fund for
students at the Southeast Warren School Milo
Primary Center to pay for afternoon milk, grades
K to 3rd. This afternoon milk is the extra milk
students have during snack time. Not all families are
able to afford this extra milk fee and it is not covered
by the free and reduced lunch program.
If you would like to contribute to this fund, please
mail your check, payable to Southeast Warren
Community Schools, to the Milo Primary School,
316 N. 5th Street, and designate it to the Milk
Money Fund or contact Patty Harrington, 641-9426216, at the Milo Primary School after August 8th. A
semester of afternoon milk for one child is $31.50.
We have received a donation of 10 cutting
boards that say “Give us this day our daily
bread…“ thanks to the generosity of Diane Hall at
Promotions Plus. The first 10 people who donate
$31.50 or more, after August 8th, will receive a
cutting board. The boards are approximately 6" wide
by 13" long.
Let’s get ready to go back to school! On Thursday,
August 18th at 6:30 pm the Milo Public Library will
have a back to school pizza party and BINGO. Many
of the prizes on BINGO will be school supplies.
Come celebrate the wonderful summer that we have
had at the library and get ready to start school.
Are you trying to stay inside and beat the heat?
Come check out our wonderful selection of family
videos at the library. I try to keep many of the new
releases and the best part is that they are free to
check out.
Let me say thank-you to all of the children that
participated in our Summer Reading Program this
year. Got to say it was one of the best ever. I had a
great group of kids and a great group of helpers. You
all were wonderful!

This fund was started eight years ago and provided
milk for many students both during the first and
second semesters. The Milo Methodist Church and
the Milo Lions started this fund. The goal is to
provide afternoon milk to any of the students who
weren’t receiving, who wished to have it. Last year
47 students were provided a semester of milk at the
Primary School. There is no income requirement
anyone is eligible. Some students use the Fund for
both semesters, others just in the fall or spring.
The Milk Money Fund is run through the school
lunch program and all deposits and charges are
tracked, while maintaining the confidentially of the
students receiving milk. You can be confident that
your donation is going directly to a child.

Milo Lions News
Independence Day 2016 has come and gone, and a
lovely day it was with gentle temperatures and mostly
overcast skies. Large crowds watched the parade,
wiped out concessions, and patronized Milo Lions
Bingo and bounce houses. Thank-you! And I believe I
owe our Bingo patrons an apology. I checked to make
sure we started with a complete set of Bingo balls, but
I cannot say that we ended with a complete set. I’m
inclined to think the set we used wasn’t designed for
the cage we used. And I was so intent upon
maintaining control of a cage that acted more like a
mad gumball machine, that I don’t think I was much
fun. I am happier to say that, for most of the
afternoon, patrons enjoyed the Bingo stylings of my
son Tristan. Calling Bingo is his favorite part of the
4th of July, and it shows. He surprised me too by
pointing out that this was his 10th year calling. I’m
sure he’s right. Clearly, I’ve reached the age where I
wonder, “Where has the time gone?” “B-4! And after!”
Lion Jay Mosher counted 113 “runners” as they
passed his station on the 4th of July morning Fun
Run. And some folks began calling my station
Cheaters Corner. In that I’m perfecting my best
Sergeant Schultz (Hogan’s Heroes) impression, I have
no idea what they’re talking about. “I see nothing!”
(OK, that’s too easy.) “I know nothing!” (That’s a lot
harder.) What I do know is that we’re grateful to
those who “organized” the Fun Run and those who
participated. Big thank-yous to those who set-up
obstacles as well as the folks who graciously allowed
the course to cross their property. We’re always
looking for interesting, and generally simple,
obstacles to add to the run. If you have a great idea,
please do not keep it to yourself!
Thursday evening August 25, the Milo Lions
Club will host its annual “Steak Fry.” Yes, we take
some license with the “Steak” part, because some
years we’ve opted for Iowa Chops. (Our thanks to
Lion Darrell Goering Jr.). The Milo Lions Steak Fry
serves as our open house, a chance for prospective
members to come and eat and learn something
about who we are and what we do. Lions Clubs
worldwide devote themselves to service, particularly
in areas of eyesight, hearing, diabetes, and disaster
relief. In Iowa, Lions Clubs support the University of
Iowa’s Eye Bank, Kids’ Sight vision screening for
preschool and kindergarten kids, Leader Dog training
and placement, and camps devoted to kids with
vision issues, hearing loss, or diabetes. Locally, your
Milo Lions Club is building a pedestrian/bike trail,
sponsoring scholarships, collecting eye glasses and
hearing aids to be recycled, and, year-to-year,
working on other community improvements. It takes
time, treasure, and talent to do what we do. We’d
welcome any of the three you’d care to donate.
We’re always looking for new members.
Ken Smith of Milo will serve as President of the
Milo Lions Club 2016-2017. Ken is also Zone Chair
for our portion of Iowa 9SW. We thank Milo Lions
Club President 2015-2016 Terry Davis for his service.
The Milo Lions will not meet July 28 or August 11.

Thank You
We wanted to thank everybody for the benefit
dinner on Sunday, July 10th. It was a wonderful
success. Mark and I can’t express our appreciation
enough to the people that donated items, bought
the donations, the people that cooked, served
and cleaned up, the auctioneers and everyone
who attended.
Special thanks to Milo United Methodist Church,
Amy Johnson, Molly Audetat, Kristie Storm, Kim
DeLay and Laura Benesh.
We also wanted to thank family and friends for
being with us throughout the whole ordeal. The
donations will go a long way to help with
modifications to the house.
— Thanks again, Mark and Sue Nickum

Warren County Farm Tour – 2016
Southeast Warren Schools
Important Dates to Remember
Join the tour (drive yourself) to any or all of eight
niche farms to see, learn and enjoy life on small
rural specialty farms located throughout our county.
This free, family event is on Sunday, August 28,
2016 with farms open to the public from 11 am to
6 pm. Maps and more information are available at
City Hall in Milo and various locations throughout
the county and on the FB page and website:
warrencountyfarmtour.com.
Some of the things to do include pick your own
berries, vegetables, aronia berries and see unique,
restored farm equipment. See fainting goats, bunnies,
belted Galloway cattle, organic worm castings, straw
bale garden, chickens, turkeys and ducks and arts &
crafts. There will be live music, kids fishing,
horseback riding and lots of good stuff to purchase
such as jams & jellies, goat milk soap, pickled beets
& relishes, pottery and honey.
Each farm will offer food selections that include
some how-to demonstrations at the Willis vegetable
garden. The Warren County Pork Producers will grill
at the picnic pavilion at the Annett Nature Center
and the Fairview Community Church will have an
ice cream social in the afternoon. Ferinheit Wood
Grilled Pizza will be featured at the Laotian Farm and
grilled hot dogs at the Crooked Hedge Farm.
North of Indianola, the Edge of the Woods
Raspberry Farm will host the Warren County
Cattlemen’s Association and the Outside Scoop pink
ice cream truck. Sample some of the unique ways to
eat Aronia berries at Fogle’s Organic Aronia Berry
farm. Learn how to grow your own food at the
Central Iowa Organic Fertilizer farm with worm
castings!
This is the second year for the Tour. Sign-up at
each farm’s welcome table to win a farm’s gift basket.
