world leader in turboexpander technology
overview
L.A. Turbine designs, manufactures, and overhauls
Turboexpander equipment ranging from 2 HP to 17,000
HP, with custom modifications to fit your process
conditions and needs. L.A. Turbine’s products are designed,
engineered and built to increase safety and reliability
as well as minimize maintenance costs and equipment
down-time. These products can be easily retrofitted to
existing equipment.
Products
new equipment
L.A. Turbine designs and manufactures
Turboexpanders for use in Hydrocarbon Gas
Processing, Air Separation, Refrigeration and
Energy Recovery Industries.
Expander-Compressor: High-speed rotating
machines used in cryogenic applications
including natural gas, petrochemical, and air
separation industries. The power that the
expander removes from the gas expansion
is entirely transferred to the compressor’s
impeller and the expander produces the
process refrigeration necessary for cryogenic
gas processing while recovering that power
for use elsewhere in the process.
Expander-Generator: Converts the energy
from the gas expansion into electric
power. These machines come in three configurations. In
the first, the high speed expander shaft is coupled to a
gearbox, which is then coupled to the generator. In the
second, the expander wheel is directly mounted on the
high-speed gearbox pinion, eliminating the high-speed
coupling. In the third, the expander wheel is directly mounted
on the shaft of a high-speed generator, eliminating the
gearbox entirely.
Expander-Brake: Energy recovered from the gas expansion
is absorbed by a brake wheel rotating in an oil stream or
air stream.
premier service

geothermal power solutions
L.A Turbine is the world’s most experienced manufacturing
company of Turboexpander equipment to generate power
from Geothermal renewable energy. Our Team built the
equipment for Mammoth Pacific and Steamboat Nevada. The
equipment is actually owned by Ormat and uses the binary
process.
The same Team built the Turboexpander Equipment using
the direct steam process for CalEnergy in Salton Sea. This
is the biggest Turboexpander ever built for this application.
Since 2003, those Turboexpanders have been overhauled
and redesigned by the same Team, now employed at
L.A. Turbine. The Team, has over 300 years of cumulated
experience with the Geothermal power generation equipment
using the Turboexpander technology

redesign and reverse engineering
Getting the most from your Turboexpander is
critical. High efficiency is essential to success
in today's process plant. If you experience low
efficiency, a change in operating conditions,
or process contamination, it may be time to
look at a redesign.
Performance: If your unit has been in service for a while,
your gas supply may be quite different than the original
design conditions. Advances in engineering and design
mean that additional gains in efficiency may be readily
available.
Free Evaluation: L.A. Turbine will perform a free evaluation
of your current Turboexpander operation at no charge. If
mechanical or performance improvements can be made,
we'll show you how to get there. To obtain your free
analysis, call 1-661-294-8290 or email sales@laturbine.com.
Reliability: L.A. Turbine has a proven track record of
improving the mechanical reliability of existing units,
regardless of their original manufacturer.
spare parts
L.A. Turbine can support you in determining the best balance
between spares inventory and unnecessary inventory.
Spares Recommendations: Normally a Turboexpander
may operate for many years without servicing. However,
certain spare parts should always be kept on hand in
case of emergency. Recommended spares fall into several
categories:
•Gasket sets, o-ring kits, and Teflon seals should always be
kept available.
•Disposable filter elements for lube oil and seal gas filters.
•Repair kits for critical skid-mounted valves, actuators,
regulators, and pumps.
A spare MCS (Mechanical Center Section) is also a critical
part of a complete spares inventory. The spare MCS includes
all of the rotating parts of the expander. If the installed unit
is damaged, the MCS can be installed in a few days rather
than weeks. This dramatically reduces down time and lost
production.
control systems
Today's vibration analysts and mechanical
engineers desire a flexible data acquisition,
monitoring, and control platform to more
precisely diagnose and predict machinery
malfunction. With a flexible data acquisition
and analysis system, you gain the ability to
easily expand input channel count and analysis
functionality, without expensive upgrades.
Similarly, data acquisition can be applied
to post-manufacturing testing and real-time
monitoring in the field.
L.A. Turbine is the premier service provider
for Turboexpanders and related equipment to
the Oil & Gas, Air Separation, Geothermal
and Power generating industries. We deliver
superior service as measured by quality,
reliability, and on-time performance.
