Products
NEW EQUIPMENT
L.A. Turbine designs and manufactures
turboexpanders for use in the Hydrocarbon Gas
Processing, Air Separation, Refrigeration and Power
Recovery industries. Turboexpander product
configurations include:
Expander-Compressor: This configuration is used
in applications such as natural gas, petrochemical,
air separation and other cryogenic processes.
The power extracted by the expander wheel during
the gas expansion is transferred through the shaft
to the compressor, which allows the recovered energy
to be applied elsewhere in the process. The resulting
temperature drop through the expander produces the
refrigeration necessary for cryogenic gas processing.
Expander-Generator: Energy from gas expansion
is converted into electric power as a result of the
expander-generator process. Expander-generator
equipment is typically offered in three configurations:
1. T
he expander shaft is coupled to a high-speed
gearbox input shaft, and the gearbox’s output shaft
is coupled to the generator.
From concept through commissioning, L.A. Turbine
controls and manages the design, manufacturing
and testing processes for all new and aftermarket
equipment. As a result, we are able to deliver fasterto-market customized solutions, and our equipment
not only meets but often exceeds our clients’ output
performance requirements. All engineering design and
development processes comply with ISO 9001:2008.
2. The expander shaft is the pinion of the highspeed gearbox, eliminating the coupling mentioned
above. This configuration is also known as an
integral gearbox.
3. The expander shaft is common with the rotor
of a high-speed generator, eliminating the
gearbox entirely.
Expander-Brake: This configuration provides efficient
means of cryogenic refrigeration, while the energy
recovered from gas expansion is absorbed by
a brake wheel rotating in a stream of oil or air.

GEOTHERMAL POWER SOLUTIONS
L.A Turbine has proven its engineering expertise by
redesigning one of the largest geothermal turboexpandergenerator machines ever built. The expander, originally
built by another turboexpander company, had experienced
significant reliability issues resulting in ongoing failures during
a multi-year period. L.A. Turbine’s engineering team applied
its 300+ years of accumulated geothermal turboexpander
manufacturing expertise and created an innovative design
approach that resulted in the creation of a new expander
wheel coupling technology. L.A. Turbine manufactured the
components for the redesign and delivered a solution that
not only met the customer’s performance requirements but
also delivered a reliable and ongoing operational unit. Our
team welcomes the opportunity to apply their innovative
thinking in performance, efficiency and reliability to the
emerging ideas and opportunities in the renewable energy
field today.

REDESIGN AND REVERSE ENGINEERING
Efficiency and reliability is essential to
economic success in today’s processing plant.
L.A. Turbine offers redesign of your existing
expander equipment. Using advanced 3D laser
scanning, CMM, FaroArm® and ADRE system
technology, our engineering team ensures the
right design solution, every time.
The Before and After images shown above present an
example of a complete redesign, including refurbishment
of the oil system skid, its associated pumps, valves,
pressure tank and cooler, as well as a new PLC with
HMI and transmitters.
Performance: If your turboexpander equipment has been
in service for several years, current process conditions
may have changed significantly from the original design
conditions. L.A. Turbine offers redesigns that increase
efficiency, improve reliability and provide a quick return
on investment.
Complimentary Evaluation: L.A. Turbine offers
complimentary evaluations of your current turboexpander
operation. Call +1-855-FX-TURBO (+1-855-398-8726),
email sales@laturbine.com or complete a Turboexpander
Evaluation Form online at www.laturbine.com.
Reliability: L.A. Turbine has a proven track record of
improving the mechanical reliability of existing expander
equipment, regardless of original manufacturer.

SPARE PARTS
Turboexpanders can operate for years without servicing;
however, starting and stopping equipment and varying process
conditions may lead to a service requirement or cause machine
failure. Therefore, it is critical to have certain spare parts on
hand for emergency needs. L.A. Turbine will identify a spare
parts inventory to meet your operational needs, reduce the
risk of future downtime and minimize your capital expense.
Depending on your requirements, L.A. Turbine may recommend:
• Gasket sets, O-ring kits and Teflon® seals
• Disposable filter elements for lube oil and seal gas filters
• R
epair kits for critical skid-mounted valves, actuators,
regulators and pumps
• S
pare mechanical center section (MCS) — If the current
operating unit is damaged, the spare MCS can be installed
in a few days rather than weeks, dramatically reducing down
time and lost production revenue
CONTROL SYSTEMS
Current control system technology allows vibration analysis
and provides mechanical engineers with a flexible data
acquisition, monitoring and control platform to more
precisely diagnose and predict machinery malfunction.
With a flexible data acquisition and vibration analysis
system, you gain the ability to easily expand input
channel count and analysis functionality, without expensive
upgrades. Similarly, data acquisition can be applied to
post-manufacturing testing and real-time monitoring in the
field. L.A. Turbine can incorporate state-of-the-art upgrades,
such as speed, vibration and pressure transmitters, and
integrate these with compatible PLCs and HMI panels that
communicate with the DCS through Modbus® or Ethernet.

Capabilities
L.A. Turbine has experienced tremendous
growth since the company was founded in 2003
to service and repair the aftermarket needs of OEM
turboexpander units. Since that time, L.A. Turbine has
established a global presence on five continents, with
headquarters in Valencia, California and 16 world
offices and partner locations. In 2007, the company
began designing, engineering and manufacturing its
own L.A. Turbine-branded turboexpander units. We
made a strategic decision to control the entire
manufacturing process from concept through
commissioning, thus giving us the ability to provide
quicker-to-market finished products, ensure quality
control, offer competitive pricing and provide
outstanding customer service.
Today, L.A. Turbine’s headquarters occupies 90,000
square feet of operations and manufacturing space,
where we design and build new turboexpander
equipment and repair, service and support all brands
and configurations of other OEM turboexpanders.
We provide innovative solutions, build highly reliable
and top-performing equipment, not only because
we have the right technology, tools, equipment and
