Dear Friends in Christ,
In these words adapted from William Shakespeare, we can truly say that we at the Cenacle Retreat
Center are “Twice Blest” this year as we celebrate two milestones. This is the 90th anniversary of
our presence in Ronkonkoma, NY, as well as our 5th year in our new building!
“Twice Blest! Blessed the One Who gives and the one who receives...” We marvel at how our
Good God continues to shower us with grace and serenity for all who come to share in Maude
Adams’ generous legacy of our dear “Ronky” property.
So, please SAVE THE DATE and join us for a special celebratory event in the Retreat Center and
on the grounds!
Sunday, September 25, 2016
1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
This Open House will include tours of the main center, a hermitage, the labyrinth, our cemetery, the
Stations of the Cross, and the Grotto, an exact duplicate of Our Lady of Lourdes. There will be live
music by In The Way ensemble, led by Mark Albertini. There will be face painting! There will be
scrumptious food prepared by our chefs! We will close with a prayer service in our chapel at 4:00 p.m.
We thank our donors for our beautiful outdoor labyrinth that was completed last fall. Please come
try this ancient walking meditation. I am giving a guided walk on Saturday, September 24, 2016,
from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. It is a “watering hole” for the spirit. Don’t let your spiritual well run dry!
Psalm 138:8 – “Your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever.”
Love in Christ,
Sr. Margaret Rohde, r.c.

THIRTY DAY RETREATS
We offer the 30 day Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius at any time of the year.
Please call the Retreat Office at 631-588-8366 ext. 406
WE HAVE FOUR HERMITAGES ON OUR PROPERTY!
Jesus said, “The Kingdom of God is within you.” (Luke 17:21)
The spiritual practice of a solitary retreat is for the experienced prayer.
It is a time of silence, free of daily distractions, to fulfill your desire to deepen your
relationship with God.
To discern if this experience may be for you, contact the Retreat
Office at 631-588-8366.
The next step of the discernment is a letter of recommendation from your spiritual
director. You will also need to complete our application, and come for a personal
interview if you live in the area, or have a telephone interview if you live at a distance.
A minimum stay is three nights, and a maximum stay is thirty days.
The Cenacle Prayer Enrollment
ENROLLMENT in the prayer ministry provides for the celebration of monthly masses for
all those enrolled and the opportunity to be remembered not only in the daily prayers of the
Sisters, but, also by the many friends of the Cenacle. The gift of prayer can offer comfort to
those who have lost a loved one, are going through a difficult time, or are ill.
Prayer can also be offered to let someone know you are thinking of them as they celebrate
a happy time in their life, a new child or grandchild, a birthday, a wedding or anniversary,
or for someone you simply thought of while on retreat at the Cenacle.
Each Cenacle card or folder is beautifully hand lettered by a Cenacle calligrapher. What better
way is there to tell someone he or she is loved and remembered than with the gift of prayer?
For more information or to place an order call 631-588-8293 or 1-800-541-2357.

LIVING THE SERENITY
PRAYER
How often we recite the Serenity
Prayer! Yet, do we really know how to
live it in the ups and downs of everyday life? This weekend retreat will

a practical and spiritual approach to
the key components of acceptance,
change/action, and most importantly,

RESTING IN THE MESS
AND UNEARTHING JESUS
We buy into the images of success,
peace and security that our culture
flings at us. We wear masks and try
to ignore the itch and rumble of our
hearts, bodies and souls that remind
us we are living a lie. In his song
“Hallelujah,” Leonard Cohen praises
3
the moments of clarity that come when
we embrace the irreconcilable in life.
Resting in the mess, we discover the
Crucified and Risen Jesus at our side.

THE GIFTS OF NEARDEATH EXPERIENCES
Near-death experiences (NDEs) are
now generally accepted as a real
experience of the after-life and of its
accelerated healing. The majority
return to life with many of its gifts: an
intimate experience of a loving God,
loss of the fear of death, healing of
deep hurts, an increase in self-esteem
and compassion for others, a sense
of union with all things and a clearer
sense of how to fulfill one’s purpose
in life. This retreat based on the Linn’s
latest book, The Gifts of Near-Death
Experiences, will show how the NDE’s
healing processes can heal us now.

CARING FOR THE
CAREGIVER
When caring for another, the last
person we have time and energy to
care for is ourselves. If we find ourselves getting tired, discouraged or
more easily upset, it may be a sign
that we are caring for another at the
expense to ourselves. Fr. Linn will
share his personal experience with this,
and how to grow rather than burnout.

PRAY WITH IMAGINATION!
Meet Jesus as you have
never met Him before!
Our imagination is one of our most
treasured inner senses. Gift of God to
us, imagination opens our hearts and
souls to endless possibilities with
God. It opens us to a unique and personal relationship with Jesus. Using all
of our senses, we see Jesus’ face, we
listen to the way He speaks, we hear
the crowds around Him, we speak to
Him. Jesus becomes a living person
to us now in our lives, and we begin
to realize more deeply how we are a
living person to Him. Just imagine!

“Let Him Kiss Me with the
Kiss of His Mouth:” Meditation on the “Song of Songs”
(Silent Afternoon of Prayer)

In writing her Meditation on the Song
of Songs, St. Teresa of Avila’s intention was to help her readers find the
delight and consolation that was hers
in the lofty petition, “Let Him kiss me
with the kiss of His mouth.” What better gift can we ask for than the holy
peace and sweetness of such
intimate friendship with Jesus?

INNER NUMBNESS –
GOD IS BORN AND
OFFERS TENDERNESS
Each year the Season of Advent
meets our hardened hearts and invites
us to enter the liturgy of waiting. The
pains and doubts and fears of the
past year can discourage hope and
encourage numbness. As nights of
darkness lengthen – the eyes of our
souls adjust and we begin to see
anew. The birth of God into humanity
shatters our inner numbness and we
claim again God’s tenderness. Our
hearts soften in the Light of Jesus.

OUR HEARTS ARE
ENCHANTED BY THE
SACRED HEART OF JESUS
The prophet Jeremiah knows us well:
“More tortuous than all else is the
human heart,” (17:9). We are confounded by the confusions, complexities and enigmas of our relationships
in daily life. Jesus lived the human
mystery in all its obscurities and
revealed God’s self-emptying love as
the doorway to a peace the world
cannot give. We long for that peace, yet
we are both captivated and frightened
by its demands. Can we surrender our
hearts into the Sacred Heart?

HEALING THE STUCK
PLACE — FOR SPIRITUAL
DIRECTORS
7
The science behind placebos reveals
that the same sugar pill can either
heal us or harm us because whatever
we vividly imagine becomes our reality.
Whenever we or another are stuck
in our growth, images are the key to
finding the underlying problem and
resolving it. The stuck place then
becomes the gifted place where God
creates within us new life.

PRAYER, UNLEASHING A
STRONG TENDERNESS
FOR AND FROM JESUS
“I don’t love you and I don’t want to
love you, but I want to want to love
you!” St. Teresa of Avila told Jesus.
Does our relationship with Jesus allow
us to be as honest in prayer as she
was? Are we so distrustful of Jesus
that we only say what we think He
wants to hear? A strong tenderness is
waiting to be unleashed between us
and God – once we accept God’s
acceptance of us.

ASH WEDNESDAY –
THE LANGUAGE OF LENT
Language learning requires humility
and surrender. The security of previously held definitions is gone. We can
presume nothing. We know that we
do not know; it demands too much
energy to pretend. Opposites randomly
collide: right and wrong, good and
bad, fear and trust, threat and promise,
life and death. In its midst is Jesus –
dying and living into a Promising God.
Jesus waits to communicate with us in
this new language. Dare we stammer
and stutter?

HEALED, WHOLE,
AND HEALTHY –
For Women in Recovery
Healing is essential for wholeness
and good emotional health. Yet, it is a
process that we often don’t discuss,
let alone attend to appropriately.
Whether our wounds are recent, the
result of the loss of a loved one, pertain to a physical limitation or diagnosis, or involve circumstances from the
past, we will learn how to apply the
process of healing to our deepest and
more intimate sorrow. Through presentations, music, ritual, group sharing, one to one conferences, and even
laughter, this retreat guarantees to
provide us with a safe and supportive
environment to feel, express and
begin to recover from our losses.

MEETING GOD IN THE
MIDST OF TEMPTATION
March 17 – 19, 2017
Each temptation asks if I am going to
trust God and allow Him to provide
for my needs. Am I going to turn to
something else that in itself is empty,
and expect it to fill me? Each temptation is an intimate place where we
can meet God alone and through His
mercy discover and choose to accept
a deeper hunger for God.

OUR INCOMPLETENESS
IS OUR DIGNITY –
DISCOVERING GOD’S
ABUNDANCE THROUGH
OUR EMPTINESS
We plan and rely on our routines and
feel all is well with ourselves and life
and God. Life throws a wrench into
our efficiency, and we are stopped.
Once the jolt subsides, we find ourselves surrounded by emptiness and
feel our incompleteness. Security is
gone; we are in the land of uncertainty.
We learn the terrain of this new country
and discover anew God’s presence in
our lives.

IN HIS WEAKNESS WE
ARE REAL – MEN’S PALM
SUNDAY WEEKEND
Are we scandalized by the humanity
of Jesus? Do we want a sanitized
God who protects us from the harshness of self-emptying love? Holy Week
shatters our hoped-for perfection and
reveals a God who is weak and shattered. We are lost. We are nowhere.
Faith dawns on the horizon of these
days: we are known and loved by God
as we are. We are loved “now/here”
and this “now/here” carries us into the
arms of a God worthy of our trust.

THE GARDENS COME
TOGETHER: EDEN,
GETHSEMANE AND THE
RESURRECTED GARDENER
We are facing the ultimate, knowing
all along we would arrive here. Eden
claims self-sufficiency while Jesus
washes feet. Gethsemane plunges us
into anxiety, and Jesus submits to God’s
promise. The empty tomb leaves us
trembling, and the Resurrected

unimagined hope. Easter faith opens

We fear the disruption and freedom that change brings into our lives. We keep at bay the truth that life holds no guarantees,
and we expect our faith in God to take away fear and anxiety. Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane reminds us that we

encouragement of a waiting God.

The Cenacle – Its Ministry and Spirituality
THE MINISTRY OF THE CENACLE is to awaken and deepen faith through retreats, catechesis, spiritual
direction and other means of faith formation. The purpose of the Cenacle is to help persons address
the meaning of life and find their way to the peace of God.
THE SPIRITUALITY OF THE CENACLE blends the biblical mystery of Mary in the Cenacle, the apostolic
vision of the founders and the Ignatian influence. The insight of our foundress, St. Thérèse Couderc –
expressed in her following text on self surrender – gives this spirituality a special character.
To Surrender Oneself
Sunday, June 26, 1864
“To surrender oneself is more than to devote oneself, more than to give oneself; it is even more than
to abandon oneself to God. In a word, to surrender oneself is to die to everything and to self, to be
no longer concerned with self except to keep it continually turned towards God.”
Vision Statement
To enter the Cenacle is to enter the heart” Pope Paul VI
God’s Goodness invites us to enter the Cenacle where something of God enters into us and transforms
our hearts.
God’s Goodness invites us to go out from the Cenacle to the heart of the world where God’s people
await our presence and where we are mutually transformed.
