OFFICE HOURS: Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 4:30 pm Message From Our President Jackie Poloski April is Volunteer Month. We know that New Horizons is volunteer driven, but did you know that volunteering can actually make you happy? Some of our happiness is determined by our home life growing up. If your parents were happy and positive, your probably have a greater predisposition to being happy yourself. Some happiness also depends on your “conditions of living”, having what you need, not necessarily what you want or think you need. But the best part is that a great deal of happiness can come from volunteering and the people we surround ourselves with. I think that's amazing! By volunteering for the things we enjoy, with people that enjoy the same things, we actually increase our happiness! It doesn't have to be every day. It can be as little as one or two times a week or month. Try it and it will prove that volunteering makes us happy. I always say, being happy is a choice. I choose to be happy. I choose to volunteer. A heartfelt thank you to all our “happy volunteers”. SOCIAL Lavona Clarke “Our Party Queen” The Social Committee would like to apologize for the postponement of the 50s Sock Hop. We were looking forward to bringing you a fun-filled evening!, but we had only sold forty advance tickets and that would have left us in a deep hole financially. We don’t need to make tons of money but we shouldn’t be throwing it away either. Our thanks to those who did buy tickets; a refund can be obtained at the office. We will try to find an open date when the DJ is available and run the 50s Sock Hop in the near future. Watch the bulletin board for info. WOOD CARVERS Highlights from the March Board Meeting: Report on difficulty getting kitchen teams. Fee Bylaw change: Final draft – to be presented at the Members Meeting. Barn quilt: the Art Group will paint the quilt. Mature Driving Course will be presented by MPI. Check bulletin board for dates. Dates to remember: General Members Meeting - Tues., April 5, 2016 at 7:00 pm Volunteer Appreciation - Thursday, April 21, 2016 Yard Sale - Sat., May 21, 2016 (bring your donations) Fall Supper - Sunday, September 18, 2016 Choose happiness! Choose volunteering! The Office The wood chips are flying (we’re working on bird carvings) Fridays from 1:00 to 3:30. Great pasttime, great group of people. I have enough savings for the rest of my life. As long as I die in the next couple of weeks. Card Yard News and More! Contract Bridge will hold its annual tournament on Monday April 25th at 1pm. We want to particularly welcome all players from various groups in Gimli to join us for this event. It has always been a good time to be had at the games. Starting the first Monday in April, we will be playing the Original Hand and Foot Canasta that is easy to learn if you have been away from it for awhile. We start playing at 1 PM sharp so do come at least 10 minutes early to get yourself settled with some tea or coffee and to enjoy a catch up chat. We also use this time to sign up. From this one list, groups for tables of three or four are chosen randomly every week. See you there! PEROGY MAKING Elaine Einarson March 2016 Perogy day was a little tougher to get through. On the Tuesday prep the day before only 4 people showed up to peel potatoes and do the prep. Many, many thanks to Mike, Pauline, Carol and Ella for doing a such great job. On Wednesday 31 volunteers came out to make 218 dozen perogies. Everyone pitched in and completed the job by 11:30 a.m. A total of 105 volunteer hours were logged. A big thank you to Mike and Pauline for taking over for Edna who could noty be there on Weds. They did such a good job maybe they would take over next year’s perogies?? (just joking as I know the answer to that) Overall the perogy group is doing an excellent job. At this rate the revenue from this year’s perogy program should top $5200.00 With only 2 months left till the project shuts down for the summer months lets continue to make this a worthwhile effort! Next perogy day Tuesday (prep) April 5th and 6th. Hope to see a good turnout. The perogy group are requesting anyone who has plastic clips from bread or buns to save them and bring them to the office. The packing department find them much easier to work with compared to the twist ties. People took LSD to make the world weird . . . now they take Prozac to make it normal. As well as a strong quilting base, we also have members that knit and embroider and are involved with other types of fibre arts. There is talk of learning to paint and dye fabric as well as possibly holding a felting class. The membership continues to grow and we are averaging between 12 and 17 members attending each Tuesday. We are a busy and eclectic group with various abilities and talents. The members are making sanitation kits to send out to Days for Girls, a group of about eight are weaving tumbling blocks and stars for wall hangings from fabric strips; others are working on Challenge Quilts for the Lakeside Quilt Show in August. The Challenge Quilts will be donated to Nova House after the Quilt Show. Members are also working on personal projects. We are all working on various items for the sale and Silent Auction on Tuesday, April 12 at the Art, Craft and Quilt Sale. Be sure to attend and purchase articles for yourself or gifts. A huge thank you goes out to Bob Senow and his mother Lorraine for the large donation of fabric and sewing supplies. As the donations come in, we sort the bins and the Fibre Arts group keeps what we can use and the remainder goes to local thrift shops, other quilt groups or used for puppy pillows. If you are not familiar with puppy pillows, they are pillowcases filled with fabric scraps and given to Manitoba Mutt for dogs in foster care. They receive a pillow which they can take with them when they go to their forever home. If you are interested in socializing with other likeminded individuals, share ideas, get or give advice, be sure to drop in and become a member of the Fibre Arts Group. Why are stairs inside . . . and steps outside? An Amish boy and his father were visiting a mall. They were amazed by almost everything they saw, but especially by two shiny silver walls that could move apart and then slide back together again. The boy asked, "What is this, Father?" It got crowded in heaven so, for one day and one day only, it was decided to only accept people who had really bad day on the day they died. St. Peter was standing at the pearly gates and said to the first man, “Tell me about the day you died.” The man said, “Oh, it was awful. I was sure my wife was having an affair, so I came home early to catch her with him. I searched all over the apartment but couldn’t find him anywhere. So I went out onto the balcony, we live on the 25th floor, and found this man hanging over the edge by his fingertips. I went inside, got a hammer, and started hitting his hands. He fell, but landed in some bushes. So, I got the refrigerator and pushed it over the balcony and it crushed him. The strain of the act gave me a heart attack, of which I died from.” The father (never having seen an elevator) responded, "Son, I have never seen anything like this in my life, I don't know what it is. While the boy and his father were watching with amazement, a 92 year old lady in a wheel chair rolled up to the moving walls and pressed a button. The walls opened and the lady rolled between them into a small room. The walls closed and the boy and his father watched the small circular numbers above the walls light up sequentially. They continued to watch until it reached the last number and then the numbers began to light in the reverse order. Finally the walls opened up again and a gorgeous, voluptuous 24 year old blonde woman stepped out. The father, not taking his eyes off the young woman, said quietly to his son ..."Go get your mother." The shopkeeper was dismayed when a brand new business much like his own opened up next door and erected a huge sign which read 'BEST DEALS'. He was horrified when another competitor opened up on his right, and announced its arrival with an even larger sign, reading 'LOWEST PRICES'. The shopkeeper was panicked, until he got an idea. He put the biggest sign of all over his own shop. It read... 'MAIN ENTRANCE'. Top 9 Things You Don't Want to Hear During Surgery; 1. Better save that. We'll need it for the autopsy. 2. "Accept this sacrifice, O Great Lord of Darkness." 3. Bo! Bo! Come back with that. Bad dog! 4. Wait a minute, if this is his spleen, then what's that? 5. Hand me that... uh... that uh... that thingy there. 6. Oh no! Where's my Rolex. 7. Oops! Hey, has anyone ever survived from 500 ml of this stuff before? 8. There go the lights again? 9. "Ya know, there's big money in kidneys? and this guy's got two of 'em." L I G H T E R S St. Peter couldn’t deny that this was a pretty bad day, and since it was a crime of passion, he let the man in. He then asked the next man in line about the day he died. “Well, sir, it was awful,” said the second man. “I was doing aerobics on the balcony of my 26th floor apartment when I twisted my ankle and slipped over the edge. I managed to grab the balcony of the apartment below, but some maniac came out and started pounding on my fingers with a hammer. Luckily I landed in some bushes. But, then the guy dropped a refrigerator on me!” St. Peter chuckled, let him into heaven and decided he could really start to enjoy this job. “Tell me about the day you died?” he said to the third man in line. “OK, picture this; I’m naked, hiding inside a refrigerator….” I D E My body seems to be growing old without me. I've Sure Gotten Old! I've had two bypass surgeries, a hip replacement, new knees, fought prostate cancer and diabetes. I'm half blind, can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded, and subject to blackouts. Have bouts with dementia. Have poor circulation; hardly feel my hands and feet anymore. Can't remember if I'm 85 or 92. Have lost all my friends. But, thank God, I still have my driver's license. MEMBERSHIP Vera Ralke We have been trying to set-up some new programming here at the Centre. Acting on the requests that members are leaving with the office staff. Thanks for recommendations by the way, and please keep them coming! If we can get enough input from the many members here at the Centre, we can set up programming to match what the members want to see. Our perogy program is struggling a bit. With some of the perogy makers getting a little older we are hoping that some of the younger members would step up and keep the program going. Same goes for the Friday lunch program as well. If you are a member with some spare time or some spare energy, or both, please consider stepping into one or another of these programs, the help would be greatly appreciated. Protect your most valuable assets. Auto | Condominiums | Home Cottages | Boats | Mobile Homes Farm | Travel | Commercial Aviation | Trucking With Four Locations in Winnipeg It’s time for our yearly Volunteer Appreciation event. Any ideas on how to make the event fun and successful?? Let the office know what you think. We have 591 members so far this membership year, 110 of whom are new to the Centre this year. A trained physical fitness professional will lead 45 to 60 minutes of physical activity, and an Alzheimer Society of Manitoba staff member will facilitate the second half of the program with the support of community volunteers. BALLROOM DANCING LESSONS Gail Hurak Dance Instructor, Hilites Article and Dance Manager Debrorah and Chris Gaynor-Martens Professional Dance Instructors April will be Waltz Month. We will work on the Viennese Waltz and the ballroom waltz. The first 2 or 3 weeks will be the Viennese Waltz because it is danced when the music is faster. You will be able to use it where ole time music is played. If you have attended dances at the Fraserwood hall, you may have noticed that the music for ole time waltz needs speedier footwork. The last 3 weeks will be a ballroom waltz. Ballroom waltz is very elegant and smooth. We will help you learn the difference between the two. SUNSHINE Marion Gale Over the last 3 months we have sent out 4 bereavement cards, our hearts go out to the people and families involved. We have also sent out 8 get well cards, we hope you have all gotten over your troubles. Please continue to let the Centre know if you hear of another member who is having difficulties. The Centre will continue it’s “Sunshine” practice of sending cards to it’s members that are experiencing troubles. Owing to privacy regulations we may not be able to publish very much information relating to them. This way, you can dance to any genre of waltz time music. This takes us into May, where we will return to slow fox or students’ choice. Ballroom dancing is a couple’s dance. This is an opportunity for 2 people to enjoy a social activity and exercise at the same time. Drop into a class and give it a try! New Horizons Members - $6.00 /per person, per class Non-Member (55+ Only) - $10.00 /per person, per class THURSDAY FLOOR CURLING Fred & Vera, subbing for Jim & Bev Two more Thursdays of floor curling, March 31 & April 7 and then out come the golf clubs! Goodbye Winter, Hello Summer! Every Wednesday it seems that we have 6 wonderful people who take down the tables and set up chairs for Thursday Curling. A Big Thanks to Les & Elaine Einarson, Vince & Mavis Gerwing, Reinholt Herschfeldt, and Jackie Wilson. This has been so greatly appreciated. We have had an excellent three months with an average of 22 curlers. Because of it’s popularity we shall once again start up in September 2016. See you then. Have a Great Summer! A TV can insult your intelligence, but nothing rubs it in like a computer. KITCHEN NEWS Sharon Peichl Notices have been posted at our Centre to advise all our members of the need for several new leaders of the Friday lunch program. The Kitchen annual activities that are major fundraising efforts (Fall Supper, Pancake Breakfast, Curling Tournament and occasionally others) are fully supported by enthusiastic volunteers, but also are headed by leaders that have served for many years. Being a team leader isn’t all that scary. The team leader generally suggests a menu main course, and figures out a shopping list for ingredients. The rest can be delegated to the other people on the team. It is very important that we as members of the Centre evaluate the need for these programs, and decide where our help is best placed to keep these programs going. New Horizons has a tremendous workforce of volunteers available, we need a few people to help organize their efforts. If you feel you could lead a kitchen team, please let Jonie or Chris know in the Office. MEMBERS – PLEASE CONSIDER LEADING ONE OF THE KITCHEN TEAMS, YOUR HELP MAY ENSURE THE SURVIVAL OF THE PROGRAM. 9 Centre St., Gimli, MB Mon. - Sat. 11:30 am to 9:00 pm Sunday Noon to 8:00 pm Facebook: Comodo Chinese Restaurant CARPET BOWLING Vic Savage Carpet Bowling is one of the original New Horizons Activities that was started up back in the 1980’s and we are still up and running and we welcome more members to come and play, age is not a problem. This is not like the 5 or 10 pin bowling in an alley, but a little more like Lawn Bowling. We toss our balls and try to get into one of the three circles, not pushing out others as both colors win points. After your lunch join us for and hour and a half for easy, fun exercise and comradery. Hope we see you there, enjoying this sport. We play Wednesday afternoons at 1:00 p.m. FIT N’ FUN SUMMER EDITION Need a good Fitness Routine? Our sessions are based on low impact aerobics and established walking programs. We also do upper body workouts that are good for the arms, back and neck. Classes are held on Mondays, Wednesday and Friday Mornings from 9:30 to 11:00. Our goal is to share and learn from each other, and have fun while doing so. Individual members are stepping forward to share their expertise and a spring outing to photograph migrating/nesting birds and old farm sites/homesteads is planned for later in April. This month the group will be meeting on April 14 and 28 at 2:00pm. The cost is $2.00 with the extra money going towards guest speakers. I went to my Tuesday Tai Chi class intent on doing whatever my body would allow. I was able to bend to thigh level. Marg, Mavis and Vera have done an outstanding job of running things this year. They want to thank all of the people who helped with the setups and takedowns. Coming off of a very successful run I’m pretty sure they will all be anxious to come back in the Fall. Friday floor curling is one of the larger activities here at the Centre. It usually involves 24 regular teams, 4 people per team, and a host of other people that offer to help with setup, special events, and organizing. Adding to the flow of people is our Friday lunch program which allows the curlers to purchase a delicious lunch in between, before or after their games. The Friday lunch program is also open to the community as well. On any given Friday the Centre will see upwards of 150 people playing, socializing and having fun.
