AES YEARBOOK 2014-15 2 3 The speed with which the international school year flows by is amazing. There is so much that happens in the ten months that comprise the year. For me, it has been a pleasure to literally and figuratively sit on the sidelines and watch you interact with each other and display your talents. I hope that AES has been a school environment that has regularly allowed you to develop pleasant and rewarding friendships and acquaintances. I also hope that your teachers, counselors and administrators have served you well, and that together, you have learned a great deal. In fact, I trust you depart AES with expanded knowledge and a love of learning. High School is not always a great experience for people. It can be a complicated time of life. I trust that this year AES was a great experience for you and that you are a better person because of being here at the school and in India. Seniors, 2015 graduates, I wish you all the very best in your future endeavors. Thank you for your contributions to the school. Your personalities, interests and skills have added to the quality of AES. For this, I am grateful to you. Paul Chmelik Director 4 It is fairly widely believed it seems that students attending AES are forever changed by their experience here as evidenced by the comments from scores of alumni that return to campus throughout the year. Students, families, and teachers often state that there is a comfortable and warm energy flowing throughout the campus. This good atmosphere has sustained itself over time and is the backdrop to the good things happening in the high school, and indeed, AES. As one of the new faculty and staff members at AES this year, it is already with pride that I am part of this wonderful community and, particularly, the high school. I have been impressed by the friendly nature of the high school student body and know, in reference to my above writing, that the students here are very much an “engine” that keeps the friendly atmosphere so alive and positive. How busy can a school get? Well, we have all asked ourselves that question from time to time at a school that offers so many opportunities to students whether it is in academics, service, athletics, or activities. The challenge for students comes in juggling all that is on offer and then pursued. Honestly, the tension between being involved joyfully in so many pursuits and keeping a balance in life is one that likely will be a life-long course of management but the students at AES dive in with vigor. We are proud of that energy and attitude that embodies excellence. From my perspective, our high school students have been vital in keeping the good name of AES alive. The diversity and the way in which we all see each other with an equal lens is often wished for in places but, as we sadly know, is not realized everywhere. Our school embodies acceptance and harmony of nationalities, ethnicities, length of tenure, and varying opinions. We are better than the sum of our parts! For those of you departing AES and India after this school year, we wish you safe travels and continued success in your life's journey wherever you may be headed. Please do not forget your lessons learned here nor forget your experiences. You have contributed to what makes our school a wonderful place to be and you will be missed. We have tried to capture you in a variety of roles that will remind you of AES as the most cherished place. We had a very dedicated team that worked yearlong on the yearbook pages at school and home. We all met the deadline challenges together in order to bring this book into your hands on time. Jihae Han, the student editor of our Publication has a flair for designing pages. She was always around when someone needed her. She helped in making the cover page, back cover, and also contributed in making the minicourse pages, student portrait and event pages. The other crucial members of our committee who played a vital role and lent us their expert opinions are Caroline Mauldin, Naintara Maira, Anna Svane, Ravisa Kalsi, Rhea Vyas, Ishita Gulati and Isabella Louise Evans. They collaborated well with each other, offered insights and took total responsibility for completing the work assigned to them. Additionally, they all helped the seniors with saving their pages in the right space on the shared drive. They also helped us with arranging photos from various sports, after school activities and theatrical events during after school hours. Last but not least, we would like to extend our thanks to Mr. Johnson, Ms. Manchester and Ms. Maggie Dorairaj, for encouraging our seniors to complete their senior pages on time. Their timely reminders worked wonders with submissions. THANK YOU AES! Delhi has shaped who I am and what I want to become, AES is a huge part of that. Everything I have and everything I am is because of you too. I am so glad I have such open, honest relationships with you. I have always admired both of you; Mom, for your strength, wisdom, and kindness, Dad, for your ability to overcome, your encouragement, and attitude. I know I do not always say it but you both mean so much to me and I can't even being to explain how much I love you! Erin & Mike: Thank you for making my parents happy. All I want for them is to be happy and you both are a big part of that. I consider you to be a part of my family. I honestly cannot imagine a life without you both. I love you! It's truly been a privilege. Easy to say I'm going to miss a lot of things, particularly Shiv's laugh, Siddhant's English, witnessing Rehan's weight loss regime, the car journeys with Julian and Dongi, mocking Neil and August about Arsenal and walking into the same school as my cousin Basquiat. High school's feeling of immensity doesn't compare to all the hurdles we will overcome later on in life and I'm rooting for all of us to take what we've learnt and go far! I hope I've given to this school as much as I have taken from it and so I'd like to thank my teachers for all the guidance and support. Thank you AES for giving me this experience. Through my 3 years at this school I have met a bunch of lovely people who I will stay connected with as long as I live. First and foremost the one and only Dhawan needs to be addressed. It is really going to be bad when we part ways. You are the only one that I have been close to ever since I arrived and I appreciate you for the lovely Dhawande that you are. I will miss our late night talks in your shitty and good cars, and I will miss you and your “subtle” ways of checking out chicks everyday, which always brightened my day, whenever I felt a little blue. Our spring break adventures must not stop, as I don't think I would get by without a little Rahul here and there in my life. I love you bro! Following Shivvy is another brother that I will miss dearly. Ever since we began speaking when you joined HoA we have just continued to do so and our relationship has just grown more and more since. That laughter will forever be ringing in my ears and I know that we will stay in contact somehow, at some point there will be something you don't know and need help with and I think you already know which person it is you are going to call first . Next in order is Niiileeee. Nile we have shared quite an adventure together, being fellow gunners supporters. Those late night talks, the ones we actually made, not the falling asleep next to skype so that the other guy could hear him snore ones haha. It has been 2 great years that we have shared and I know we will continue to chat whenever Sanchez smashes a new beauty. OmiiiGuptaa, I will miss those silky smooth arms of yours. Our 2 years together has been great fun, all the requests for sending problem sets and the notes for class has been entertaining . I truly care for you and hope the best for your future, which I know will be very bright with all the knowledge tucked into your cute head. VITTHUURR bhaiya, we must not forget you. Its been great having you around for these last couple of years and we have shared several fun memories together with our other buds. That one time when you beat me at fifa is still itching in my entire body, but I shall get over it. I wish you all the best for your bright future bud Take care. Lastly Nick Patel, my true bball bro. Mesac will probably be pathetic, but nevertheless we will have fun together. It's been a pleasure having you by my side both on and off court. Mother, Mommy, Mimi, Ma; I call you a number of things (none of them mom for some reason) but they all mean the same thing: the best person in the world. Admitedly, I was not always the best kid, but despite that you always did everything for me. You ofen downplay yourself (and so do I), but you really are the smartest and greatest person I know. Papi, unlike Mommy, I have only ever called you one thing, but it means several things: clean, professional, driven, clever, prepared, always one step ahead, and a litle (very) quirky. Everything that I am is because of you. You have always been there for me, even if a lot of the tme you were not physically there. Just know, the greatest compliment I have ever received was, “You are just like your Dad”. Nanimi, You raised me and owe my childhood to you. You never stopped at anything go get me everything I needed. I never felt lonely because you took such great care of me. Everything you have done means so much to me. I will miss you so much. Anjali, you have been the one constant friend in my life. All the way from KG to 12, that’s insane. Sometmes I forget and then remember and I just have to stare at you in disbelief for a minute or two. The face of the litle girl you were fashes before my eyes and I see all the ways in which you have changed, and all the ways in which you are exactly the same. I sound like a granny, but you have grown up to be a fne young lady, and I know you will go on to do amazing things (don’t mean to brag, but I always knew you would). Family, Nastasha didi, Shanu Mama, Dada, all of you where there for me as I grew up; always coming to my performances, swim meets, art shows. Thank you so much for all your support, you all the best family I could have hoped for. Bubsy, couldn’t have done it without you. Swim team(s), every year swim team becomes so close. I don't mean it will be hard to do my own laundry or make my own dinners, contrary to popular belief in our house, I'm actually very self sufficient. However, to leave someone who says she loves me everyday and cares for me even if I don't want it. That is truly hard. I love you mom, and no matter how much I will deny it, I am still your baby. Dad: Not only do I have to say goodbye to my mom, but to leave the man I still look up even as a young adult, my dad, will be beyond difficult. You've taught me what it means to be a good person and have given me knowledge to be a good man (except how to pay taxes, that has still yet to be properly explained to me). I'm going to miss you Dad. I love you. Duncan: My 2 tips for high school for you, Duncan, are: 1) stop playing video games then complain about not having time to do homework, don't be that guy, and 2) spend a lot of time with your friends because they will be what makes your time at school great. I'll Skype you everyday and give you really big hugs when you visit. Love you buddy, have fun and don't die. Also, no, you can't have the things in my room when I go to college. Seriously thought, I'll miss you so much. Be good for mom and dad. Saleem: You've been my best friend Saleem and every moment with you has been awesome. Spend your senior year having fun and please please please keep in touch so we can have more conversations about the mysteries of the universe. Whenever you're near New York or when I'm near Portland, we should get together. Farwell, my dearest and epic friend. *insert twilight princess opening song here* Daisy: I think it goes without saying you've been an amazingly good friend to me, even through all the physical, verbal, emotional, and psychological abuse you've put me through…actually it's hard trying to remember why you're a good friend now. In all seriousness Daisy, you've made my time in India the best and life will be dark and dreary (just like your heart) without you. Keep in touch so we can talk about cats. Bea: I owe a special thanks to you Bea because you were my first friend here at AES, and if it weren't for you, I'd still be that weird kid listening to music in the breezeway during lunch (I sometimes still do that, but whatever). You're an amazing and fun person and I'll miss you big time. Have fun in college and start planning the group's reunion in like 10 years. Thomas: You're a good man Thomas, a gentleman and a scholar. You have your times of being too nerdy for your own good, but those can be overlooked by your times as a really fun guy. I would wish you good luck in college, but I already know you have enough smarts to make a new form of space travel using aluminum foil and cheese or something along those lines. You've made senior year great and I'll miss your funny way of pronouncing French words. Message me sometime. Tara: I will go on record saying that you, Tara, have the second best singing voice I've ever heard, and the first one is Freddy Mercury; sorry, but no one can beat Freddy. You are going to be the next big singer and I know you will have a very fun and successful life. You've been good to me and it's been an honor to be considered your friend. Please message me when you have time. 236 Sofia Rahman Swedish The past 2 years at AES have been incredible. I would like to thank all my teachers, friends and family for not only helping and supporting me in this journey and preparing me for the future, but also for getting me to where I am today. “You don't have to have it all figured out to move forward.” 237 Anna Rynearson USA, 7 years at AES THANK YOU DELHI 238 239 240 Kyu Jun Shim -Korean, 4 years at AES “The unexamined life is not worth living” -Socrates- 241 Anna Frederiksen Svanaae Danish Mommy & Daddy: Thank you so much for everything. Micheas Solomon “Machado” Yimam: you have been a big part of my high school stint at AES. I remember meeting you at our 10th grade orientation and since then we've been best friends and have hit it off like no other. You've always had my back and have seen me through some rough times and I greatly appreciate you always being there. Playing baseball, going out, learning from you, making fun of you has been some of the better moments of my life. Now I know you are going to tease and make fun of me for all these but imma do me, I love you bud <3. Bas: Thank you for being a huge part of my life, can't imagine it without you, / thanks for making it the best, you know how much you mean to me. Now onto all my college freshman out there: PAPIII, Brendt (Herbert Walker), Lukey, Ni-Ni, Tebo, Petey the Blackest Mamba, Jess, Daniel, Morgan, Meredith (Fresh-Princess) and Yarden...I love and miss you all. Truly without the GOONS and extended crew, my life at AES wouldn't have been real-talk. Naintara: these two links should suffice:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VN4upVaDFFs and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kT3OQwyvKmk. Coach LaBaw: Thank you for being a true role model and mentor for me, always giving the best advice and being more than just a coach. Mr. Schmid: “O Captain! My Captain!” Thank you for being an excellent teacher, a mentor and coach. “Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” -Ferris Bueller 243 Thomas Tiberghien - French/Colombian - 3 Years at AES Ever since, first landing in Delhi, AES has been full of ups and downs and twists and turns. The past three years in India have been entertaining, stressful, exciting, upsetting, and sometimes unsettling. They have completely changed my outlook to the world and developed me as a person: my four-years-ago self, would have no idea who I am. I have learned much and gained much, and I will be very sad to leave such a wonderful community. Every second of it was worth it! To Bea <3: I know we didn't get along too well in our sophomore year, but today, I don't know what I would do without you. I think the hardest part about graduating and leaving India will be coming to terms that I will not see you everyday. Thank you for making my last year here so great; you will always have a place in my heart. Ti amo. To Tara: We go back a while now and I'll miss you and your crazy times. Thank you for being such a fantastic person and friend. Thanks for always listening to me. Remember to always be who you want to be, screw social norms! To Yesh: Even though together we become the most terrible people on the planet, AES would not have been the same way without you. Remember to keep playing tennis and eating Taco Bell (even though Chipotle is soooo much better), which is what makes you Yesh. Math will not molest you forever and have fun in college, please. To Ian, Daisy, and Saleem: Thank you for making me less of a nerd, even though I still am, and making me see that not everything is about academics. Even though I wasn't into anime as much as you guys, I still had fantastic times talking to you and you are all awesome people. To Janvi: SPACESHIP!!! That is all. To Sachin: Even though we only knew each other a year here at school, it was you who welcomed me with open arms and without you I would still be on the sidelines. To my teachers: You have drowned me in a passion for learning that would not have been possible anywhere else. You are the best at what you do. Thank you for answering all my questions and always being supportive. Special thanks to Mr. Schmid, Mr. Toigo, and Ms. Shrestha. I hope we meet again! To everyone else: from Sean Titus who introduced me to volleyball to Vidur Mehra who was excellent competition in my academic life to Carlos Hurtado Who taught me everything philosophical, you all contributed to my life. You all defined my life at AES and beyond and I hope you have a great future ahead of you. Anyways, all these emotions are making me dizzy, so I'll finish with this: Today is not the end, it is the beginning… 244 Yesh Vempati 7 Years at AES Nationality USA From people to MESAC Tennis and Swimming, to mole bucks (and everyone in that Chem class), to so much more, I don't know what I will miss the most from my Dme here. Everyone that I didn't menDon here (you know who you are), I don't know what I would do without all of you. All I can do is thank you. Sachin: I really need to thank you for introducing me to the world outside of vegetarian food. It has truly been an enlightening experience ever since Burger King in Shanghai in 8th grade. Sohil: I hope you realize that I'm beMer than you at Ping-Pong. Also, all those Dmes at the Jdubz (and your annoying demon of a dog haha) and the dumplings and the pizza and the Body Shop that I didn't go in with you and Shailesh, and all those labs in Bio and Chem and memorizing Brown and Ford, it was all something to remember. Naintara:You’re probably expecting this to be funny because I’m so funny, but it’s going to be very emotional and you might even cry. We’ve had so many fun moments together and I can’t wait to add onto the list once we’re in college. I’d like to think that I’ve made you a better person, and by that I mean a funnier person.
