Winter 2016 - Tabor Hills
I t em s o f Int e r es t abo u t Tab o r Hi ll s S e n i o r Liv i n g C a m pus TABOR HILLS WINTER 2016 Semerad Pavilion (Clubhouse) Independent Living Community Supportive Living Community Healthcare Facility Community 1327 Crystal Avenue Naperville, IL 60563 A Patio Home Naperville, IL 60563 1439 McDowell Road Naperville, IL 60563 1347 Crystal Avenue Naperville, IL 60563 Dinner With Friends In the Independent Living Community, activities not only take place at the Semerad Pavilion, but also at the homes of residents amongst neighbors and friends. Right before the holiday rush, residents who attend exercise class together at the pavilion on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week, gathered together at one resident’s home to share a potluck dinner from appetizer to dessert. It was a wonderful setting for residents to get to know each other a little better and share a meal. One of the newest members of the exercise class who had recently moved to Tabor Hills attended the dinner as well, which is a wonderful way for our newer residents to get to know their neighbors and soon to be friends in the community. The members of the Tabor Hills Book Club also celebrated their annual Christmas Celebration at a resident’s home. It’s more evident to our new residents that the Independent Living Community at Tabor Hills is a great place to call home. The residents of the Independent Living Community gather at the Pavilion to participate in Christmas Bingo, the Book Club Christmas Party, watch Performing Artists and Entertainers, and the annual Christmas Dinner to break bread amongst neighbors. Patio Home Residents: Don Heimerle & Pat Serio Patio Home Residents: Lori Kolodziejski & Wes Pipal However, one of the more favorite events during the holidays is the Christmas Brunch, where residents enjoy a variety of coffee cakes straight from the bakery, freshly made that morning and delivered to the pavilion for serving at brunch. Fresh fruit, juices, coffee and tea make up the rest of the menu. This year, Bach Bells returned to entertain at the annual brunch and after not performing for several years in the community, were much anticipated and greatly appreciated. The group is from Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, where many of the residents are members. Their program is a wonderful mix of Christmas songs. But, the highlight of the day is always when residents are invited up to join the bell ringers. They are given a quick lesson and there is always a lot of laughter when a few bells are ringing at the wrong time. It is a wonderful way to ring in the holidays for the residents of the community. Merry Caroling The Healthcare Facility Residents were merrily caroled throughout the holiday season. The month of December brought carolers in from local church choirs and their congregations along with local brownie and girls scout troops. Tabor Hills Staff , family, volunteers and visitors (pictured left) prepare to serenade the residents of the Healthcare Facility during the holiday season, an annual tradition that makes everyone merry and bright! This year we were lucky enough to have two Santas partake in the caroling. T a bo r H il l s P age 3 + Pet Residents + According to the American Humane Society, “Studies show that pets help seniors overcome loneliness and depression by providing affection, company, entertainment, a sense of responsibility and purpose. The Supportive Living Community at Tabor Hills is a pet-friendly community. Some pets visit us from the Humane Society as part of a pet therapy program, others accompany resident’s families that come to visit, while some accompany staff to work or live here on campus. Mr. McDuff Betsy Helen Today’s article features the pet residents of the Supportive Living Community that bring joy to the lives of their owners and neighbors. For those who desire the responsibility, Tabor Hills’ residents are welcome to have pet roommates including: small dogs, cats, birds, fish and recently we welcomed our first guinea pig, Mr. McDuff. Mr. McDuff came to us with Anne Brown, who recently moved into the Supportive Living Community. Mr. McDuff sits in the compartment of Anne’s seated walker while she strolls through the community. Mr. McDuff loves to be petted and talked to and he is friendly and responsive to all. This is what Anne had to say about Mr. McDuff; “After my husband died, I was all alone and my family took me to see this tiny guinea pig. He was so small he fit in the palm of my hand. Now he has a belly, he is quiet, doesn’t demand food, doesn’t wake me up, he is a lover who enjoys being cuddled and adores being held.” Another special pet is Helen, who was adopted after the demise of her owner’s first adopted cat “Whiskers”. Helen has been deaf since birth, has no teeth, no claws, and a thyroid issue that requires a special diet. Our resident has taken her into her home, offering Helen, whom had previously been sheltered for several months, a loving environment. “This is the perfect place for her, she is good company,” her owner shared. Resident Charlie Whitehead is the owner of Betsy for three years now, a beautiful tortoise colored cat. “The best thing about Betsy is that she keeps me on my toes and is wonderful company,” Charlie assures. “Caruso,” roommate to Rosina Constantine is a beautiful Napoleon Munchkin breed that has been with Rosina for 6 years. “I love having him, he is a lover boy, he adores to be cuddled, petted and brushed, he just purrs.” Caruso Suzanne’s Fish Susanne Watry is the proud owner of fish in a beautifully displayed tank. “ We have always had fish, my husband loved them as did my kids and their care is so easy,” Susanne said. In addition to her fish , the community offers a large fish tank in the public area for all to enjoy. The Supportive Living also provides relaxation DVDs that showcase puppies and kittens at play and beautiful fish tanks that provide tranquility. The Community’s Concierge, Julie Knoll brings Holly, her own Yorkie to work occasionally. Witnessing the interaction and camaraderie pets provide has inspired Julie to develop a special display project within the community which will feature photos of the many pets that visit and reside here. P age 4 It’s a small world after all 2015 Holiday Bazaar Follow Up Interview by Julie Knoll, Supportive Living Community Staff Member Have you ever heard of the expression, “Six Degrees of Separation”? It is the theory that anyone on the planet can be connected to any other person on the planet through a chain of acquaintances that has no more than five intermediaries. Well, we have a great example of the theory… One day while chatting with CJ Hybl we discovered that we had both worked at the Oak Brook Mall Crate & Barrel store. I worked at Crate & Barrel in the early to mid-eighties and CJ worked at the same store, but a few decades later. We exchanged a lengthy list of names of the associates that we had each worked with and we eventually found one person in common! CJ had her home address so we wrote her a letter and included a picture of us together. A week or two later CJ started to receive phone calls from associates that he had worked with at Crate & Barrel. He had great fun reminiscing with each of them and soon arrangements were made for them to come to Tabor Hills to visit with him. On Sunday, December 6th, six women from Crate & Barrel came to visit CJ and they spent a few hours drinking coffee, sharing a variety of sweet treats, all the while talking and laughing about old times. They even “skyped” (having a face-to-face audio/video conversation over the Internet) with two former associates who had also worked with CJ, but were unable to visit in person. In addition to bringing sweets and sharing memories, the women presented CJ with an 8x10 framed photo collage of his Honor Flight Chicago which made him very happy and proud! It was wonderful to reconnect with old friends! Residents from each of the three communities on the Tabor Hills campus take part in the crafting to make this event such a success year after year. Of course, the crafting is part of all the fun but selling their wares makes their hard work all the more prideful and worthwhile. This past Holiday Bazaar proved once again to be a hit amongst families, friends, neighboring communities, and the general public. Residents worked the four day event selling their handmade crafts, costume jewelry, and baked goods. A big thank you is due to the residents for all their hard work. Proceeds from the Annual Holiday Bazaar benefit resident activities and entertainment. T a bo r H il l s P age 5 Team Tabor On September 20, 2015, Team Tabor participated in the 2015 5K Walk to End Alzheimer’s, sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association. This voluntary effort included staff and families who were invited to join Team Tabor and while there is no fee to register, each participant is expected to fundraise or donate to help raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Team Tabor: (from left to right) Laura Weren, Sara Gambrel, Jun Jun Apilado, Robin Mikel, Julie Knoll and Michael Knoll The 2015 “Walk” was held at North Central College Merner Field House in downtown Naperville with a ceremony to kick off the event at 9:30am and the “Walk” beginning at 10:00am. Over 1500 people participated in this year’s “Walk” and it certainly helped that it was a beautiful day. Campus staff created Team Tabor, wearing Tabor Hills colors and carrying signs that read “Tabor Hills, A Caring Community” to show our support for the event. Team Tabor raised over $500 for the Alzheimer’s Association in their mission to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. In addition, each registered walker accepted a flower to carry on their walk, the color of flower chosen reflected the reason you were walking. Purple flowers indicated that you have lost someone to Alzheimer’s, yellow signified that you were a caregiver of someone with Alzheimer’s, blue identified that you were living with the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, and orange showed that you support the efforts to end Alzheimer’s.
