PROJECT CASE STUDY:
Data Center Mechanical Installation
THE OVERVIEW:
A client needed a new plumbing and HVAC system installed for a 40,000 sq.-ft. data center,
with limited space and an ambitious schedule that would require blocking off a major Chicago
thoroughfare. That’s why they called Kroeschell.
THE CHALLENGE:
A large business in downtown Chicago needed to add a data center. However, the only space
available in their building was an office complex on the first floor. They needed a company that not
only could handle a project with such a large scope, but also could handle all the issues that can arise
when undertaking such a project in downtown Chicago.
PROJECT OVERVIEW:
Location: Chicago, IL
THE SOLUTION:
Project Scope:
• Install a new plumbing and HVAC system
After being selected over three other bids, Kroeschell set to work on this massive project, which
included an ambitious schedule and required blocking off a major Chicago road for three days. This
became even more of a challenge due to space restrictions within the building, which made moving
equipment more difficult. Kroeschell installed the HVAC, plumbing and piping for what was to
become two data centers covering 40,000 sq.-ft. of space.
The installation included:
•
Four evaporators
•
15 pumps
•
24 chillers
•
38 lever units
•
12” mains to the roof
that required a strict timeline, had
challenging space limitations and
blocked a major downtown Chicago road.

In order to accommodate the contractor’s schedule, Kroeschell worked day and night shifts for 40
straight days to complete the project while the business continued to work in the building. Since the
installation in 2009, not one service call has been required.
