Originally it was thought the hikers were in Siskiyou County. Jennifer Bailey, the mother of Tate, checked Tate’s website for the SPOT device Tate was carrying and discovered Tate and Alex were sending signals for help earlier on Thursday. –Please See Page 6A Big Valley ambulance gearing up for service The first meeting of the Southern Cascades Community was held Thursday at the Adin Community Hall. Modoc County Supervisor Geri Byrne officially swore in the board assisted by Lassen County Supervisor Aaron Albaugh who helped determine the length of the terms for each. Two-year terms were determined for Clinton Davis and Jean Ludwigsen and four-year terms for Bobby Fisher, Kathy Peterson and Gordon Campbell. Clinton Davis will be board chairman with vice chair falling to Jean Ludwigsen and secretary going to Bobby Fisher. Christy Asmussen was appointed interim clerk to the board and Dan Bouse interim district manager, both as non-paid, volunteer positions until the board can advertise and appoint. The next order of business was correspondence with a letter of resignation from board member Gordon Campbell. Campbell cited a family emergency, necessitating his resignation. There was also correspondence from John Benoit, the executive officer for Modoc and Lassen LAFCO, with certificates filed by the counties for the formation of the district. Box 1030 Burney, California 96013 Burney artist Carla Garloff enjoys sharing her skills with granddaughter Annika Valentine, here using acrylic paints to turn found rocks into ladybugs, little penguins, barns, landscapes, or whatever suits their fancy, utilizing “Gigi’s” (Carla’s) kitchen counter top as their “studio.” By SUSAN HOGUE Burney artist Carla Garloff has been having fun lately sharing art skills with her granddaughter, Annika Valentine, who has been visiting from her home in Fair Oaks, California. And a good part of the fun, for Carla, is being able to pass down talents which started with her own mother. “My mother drew for us (Carla, her two sisters and two brothers) when we were little,” Carla said, “and lots of family members today draw and do other art expressions.” While she’s been having fun lately painting her rock “critters,” Annika shares the family legacy in that she’s almost always with tablet in hand drawing something, even while watching television or on road trips between Burney and Fair Oaks. She’ll pick up on sights alongside the road and draw them, her grandmother said, and doesn’t hesitate to sketch a rendition of passing trucks and cars. Scenes on TV have been known to pop off the screen and land on her paper, too, an activity that tickles her “Gigi.” –Please See Page 3A HAVE YOUR COMMUNITY DELIVERED TO YOUR MAIL BOX • CALL 725-0925 TO SUBSCRIBE TODAY! June 2016 Keeping the process simple -From Page 1A And, according to Annika’s mother, Charisma Valentine, the 8-year-old has been doing such drawings since she was 5 years old. That such art expressions come easily and naturally to her granddaughter is very pleasing to Carla. “She loves drawing with colored pencils and using acrylic paints for the little rock critters,” said Carla, in expressing how much fun she has encouraging and working with Annika. She noted, too, that they keep the process simple, utilizing the kitchen counter top as a newspaper covered work table, cottage cheese lids for mixing paint colors, and recycled containers for the brush cleaning water. There’s nothing complicated in choosing paint surfaces, either, she said. “We just use whatever’s handy, like the smooth rocks that look like they could be bugs or barns or landscapes or something like that,” Carla said. She then pointed out one of her own recent works, a drawing of the Eiffel Tower which she did on the surface of a large, story printed magazine page. Lines of the Tower blend well with the printed words – and look quite creative, illustrating the practicality of using whatever’s at hand to make one’s art. As for passing on her family’s talents, Carla has a variety of works available for Annika to reference. As a longtime resident of the Intermountain area, she has done many landscape drawings and paintings, and is well known for her rendition of Burney Falls. At first glance, the Burney Falls “portrait” reads as a watercolor, until a closer look reveals that it is, instead, a beautifully rendered colored pencil drawing. That drawing and many other of Carla’s works have been reproduced in prints and greeting cards, which are available both locally and on the internet. OBITUARIES Kristi’s Unique Boutique and the Hearthstone Health Foods gift shop in Burney carry Carla’s work, including the cards, watercolor pieces, rock art and even small refrigerator magnets of local scenes. So, in addition to Annika’s “learning by association,” she is able to see, through her grandmother’s example, the means of sharing her favorite activity, and, possibly one day, being able to earn her living doing what she enjoys best, expressing herself through art, a generations deep pleasure, one which her Gigi will always encourage. Hope Athalie Yeager Lookout resident, 94 On Tuesday, June 14, 2016, Hope Athalie Yeager passed away at 94 peacefully in her sleep in her home in Lookout. Hope was born in Lookout on Jan. 6, 1922, to parents Arch and Gertrude Eades. She grew up on her parents’ farm and loved riding horses. She graduated from Adin High School in 1940. While in high school she played many different sports and participated in various school clubs. She married Howard Yeager in 1940 in Reno, Nevada. She was a member of the Red Hat Ladies and enjoyed playing cards and games with her friends in Big Valley and MacArthur. She was on the Lookout Cemetery Board and was part of the Lookout Election Committee for many years before mail-in ballots replaced the polling places. She volunteered as a clerk for the Big Valley Medical Clinic. Her life’s passions were her family, friends, and her home in Lookout. Her husband of 40 years, Howard Yeager, passed THE INTERMOUNTAIN NEWS • JUNE 22, 2016 • PAGE 3A away in 1980. Answers To The Above Puzzles On Page 2B PAGE 4A • THE INTERMOUNTAIN NEWS • JUNE 22, 2016 Out To Pastor Not Smart Enough to Be an Idiot By Dr. JAMES L. SNYDER In my experience, everybody has a slice of “idiot” somewhere hiding inside them. The trick is not to let it show itself at the wrong time. Since everybody is an idiot to some degree or other, maybe we should not be so hard on people. After all, not everybody is smart enough to be a full blown idiot. Throughout my life, I have attempted to utilize my “idiot slice” to my own advantage. So far I have had good progress on this aspect of my life, just ask the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage. With a great deal of affection she will often say, “You are one of the best idiots I have ever known.” Isn’t love a wonderful thing? Although I own up to my “idiot slice” many people for some reason, are not able to do that. After all, if everybody has a slice of idiocy, then what’s the problem? This came to me recently when a small incident happened. I do not quite remember what brought this incident to be, it could be anything these days, but the outcome is what got me. This guy looked at me with the meanest look, shook his fist at me and said, “Are you an idiot or something?” Normally I take these things as they come and just move on with my life. But for some reason that “idiot slice” in me kicked into high gear. And I responded, “Which one do you think I am?” He blinked and said, “Wh-utt?” So I said, “Do you think I’m an ‘idiot’ or a ‘something’?” “After all,” I continued, “there is a vast difference between an ‘idiot’ and a ‘something.’ What am I?” That was last week some time and I think he is still trying to figure out what in the world I was talking about. Some people just aren’t smart enough to be a plain old idiot. I believe there is a little bit of intelligence in every idiot. After all, most idiots are smart enough to get a driver’s license. And boy, do they drive like idiots. Just yesterday, I was trying to drive across town and I encountered so many idiots driving that I was tempted to run some of them over. Don’t those idiot drivers make you furious? I know a few people who are simply nuts, but that is a different story altogether. Being an idiot takes a lot of hard work and practice. Not everybody is smart enough to be an idiot. One driver I encountered, who at first glance I thought was an idiot but he turned out not smart enough to be an idiot. I was driving on my side of the road and going the speed limit. He was behind me and wanted to go faster than the speed limit. That’s okay if nobody’s in front of you, but I was in front of him and he couldn’t get around me. He honked his horn, hoping, I suppose, that I would get out of his way and let him go. However, I was more of an idiot, so I ignored him. One good thing about being an idiot is that you can ignore people who do not quite come up to the status of being an idiot themselves. Finally, we got to a place where he could pass me. I just assumed he would pass and that would be the last I would see of him. When he got beside me, he began yelling and screaming and I could not understand anything he was saying. I did figure out that he must have been a very religious man because he was pointing me to heaven. I guess he was encouraging me to go to heaven. I smiled and shook my head, which only made him a little angrier, for some reason. I did notice though, that the finger he was using to point to heaven was not the finger I would have used. I guess it’s a matter of confusion. This guy was not smart enough to be an idiot to know which finger you use to point a person to heaven. One thing I have discovered about idiots is they are not confined to race, gender or age. You can find idiots anywhere there are people still breathing. An idiot is an equal opportunity engager. Being an idiot does have its advantages. For example, when my wife sends me to the store to buy some items for the house and I come back with everything but what’s on the list I can say, “I just must be an idiot.” And, do not let this get back to her, it always works. If you know who you are and what you are, you can begin using that information to your advantage. If you know you are an idiot then you can bank on that for the rest of your life. The difference between an idiot and a fool is simply that an idiot is a little short of knowledge. Solomon understood this when he wrote, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Proverbs 1:7). And, “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise” (Proverbs 12:15). I suppose I can’t help being an idiot, but I certainly don’t have to be a fool as Solomon describes it. Dr. James L. Snyder is pastor of the Family of God Fellowship, 1471 Pine Road, Ocala, FL 34472. The calendared agenda was to address proposed rate increases in water and sewer assessments/fees. I believe there was a genuine effort on the part of the Board members, including the pool and District Managers (hereinafter Board), and the customers/ attendees to examine the merits of their respective positions. The ominous exception was the “presence” of a fictional entity that the Board admittedly recognized as a foreshadowing, controlling and coercive force in their decision making process. Enter the mental construct known and feared (utilizing “legalized violence” to enforce its mandates) as the State of California (State). The rest of us were real flesh and blood men and women extending reason, understanding, compassion and humility toward one another. As fictions (their only existence is on paper or in belief, not in substance or physical form) such as the “State” are not real and, pursuant to the “law of like kind,” cannot interact with real (flesh & blood) beings. Fictions (it) must necessarily interface with living humans by creating “strawman” or “like-kind” fictional entities to represent real beings/you. (Note: you will be addressed by the State (fiction) using the “strawman” designation of your true name but appearing in all CAPITAL LETTERS; that is NOT who you “really” are. Object! As an unchallenged claim is deemed proven under commercial law). Under this artificial/fictional influence (Water District is a fiction as a political subdivision of the fictional State) there was an initial, yet deep, sense of separation (a lack of Peace) that loomed over and de-sensitized real human interaction, evidenced by statements from the Board like, “We don’t have a choice – the State mandates this,” or “we have expenses to meet.” We always have a choice, and it is precisely this “free-will” fact and opportunity that determines who we have willed or chosen to become! I believe self-betrayal retards the soul’s evolution. As Mother Teresa stated, “If we have no peace, we have forgotten we belong to each other.” By the end of the almost three-hour meeting, I am pleased to report (my perception) we re-Membered “...we belonged to each other,” with the human connection and its peace prevailing. The Board agreed to delay a vote and consider several alternative approaches. Sadly the Board feels “caught” between humanity (itself and its customers) and the inhumanity of faceless and soulless State dictates. The State (fiction) holding the “purse-strings” of our tax money mandates the Board (fiction) increase water and sewer rates to an arbitrary threshold, even if it means “throwing customers (real-beings) under the bus” (“Legalized” violence of police evictions for failure to pay water/sewer bills/ assessments or other financial hardships), as a condition precedent to obtaining grants and loans of taxpayers money, under threat of stripping the Board of local control and jurisdiction. Under such a conundrum it became a “no-brainer” to reflect upon one of the four major “cons” that have successfully exploited mankind throughout history. The law/government con instills a belief in the necessity and propriety of the existence of government where some men rule others. Yes, I know the “drill” – I can predict critics will resort to the tactic, “If you can’t attack the issue — attack the person.” This diversionary ploy of simply labeling someone an “anarchist,” “rebel” or “anti-social,” for some reason relieves the name caller of any meaningful responsibility to examine and evaluate the ideas being espoused. Call me what you will, but, in this Board meeting, it was abundantly clear to me State mandated influence was more destructive than beneficial to the real people the government (fiction) was allegedly intended to serve. “Where the people fear the government you have tyranny; Where the government fears the people you have liberty”! Time for a quick review of the precepts of the Declaration of Independence, to reflect upon personal responsibility in self“government”? Perhaps a fresh start via state of Jefferson, or privatization of local service districts or ??? On June 21, and July 21, the Board will continue its deliberations. Please attend if possible. Call the Water District to confirm time and dates. –Tim Kersten Burney THE INTERMOUNTAIN NEWS • JUNE 22, 2016 • PAGE 5A Sorry to read Editor: I was very sorry to read the article about the problems at the Burney Fire Department in your paper and the Mt. Echo. Losing the chief, not being able to cover all shifts and equipment not being able to be repaired due to lack of funds is not good for the community. I realize that they do receive tax dollars, but maybe it is time for the community to get behind them and raise funds so we do not loose these valuable services. I would hope a community that could raise funds to upgrade the projections equipment for the local theater would get behind the fire department and do the same for them. I would hate to have to wait for an ambulance to come from the hospital if I were having a heart attack or some other major illness or injury. Remember you never know when you may need their services, be it to put out a fire or a medical emergency needing an ambulance. –Karen Hathaway Hat Creek 725-0925 THE INTERMOUNTAIN NEWS Saturday, June 25 Shop spectacular storewide savings for the home & garden! 1 50%Off DAY ONLY Annuals & Vegetables 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM 20%Off 15%Off 10%Off Garden Accessories Perennials, Shrubs, Trees Soil Amendments HARDWARE SALE! Even though it wasn’t perfect swimming weather, more than 100 people filled the Raymond Berry Pool in Burney. The next Kid Fit event is planned for June 28 at McArthur Burney Falls Memorial State Park beginning at 6 p.m. The full summer schedule and explanation of the program can be found at burneytccn.org. Jennifer did not know why they needed help, but called authorities in Siskiyou County for assistance. The GPS coordinates put the two hikers south of the Siskiyou County line on the PCT near Summit Lake Road, west of Highway 89 and McArthur Burney Falls Memorial State Park. The California Highway Patrol helicopter was requested. Personnel from both the Shasta County sheriff’s office Burney area, and the U.S. Forest Service responded to the location. The California Highway Patrol helicopter was able to locate Tate and Alex. Landing nearby the two officers walked to the hikers and soon flew both women and their gear back to Redding. Tate and Alex were cold, but not in need of any medical attention. An unexpected rain storm on June 15 drenched them and their gear. Snow came in during the night and early Thursday morning that covered the PCT and froze their wet clothes and gear. They became too cold to go any further and they also lost sight of the trail. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 888-988-6736 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site http://www.qualityloan.com , using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-15-691098-CL . Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site.
