The 52nd Annual Inter-Mountain Fair Scholarship Program will be Saturday, July 30th, 2016 at the fairgrounds in McArthur. All entries must be complete and in the fair office on or before June 1st, 2016. Girls must have reached their 16th but not their 20th birthday before September 1, 2016. This contest is limited to residents of the Fall River Joint Unified, Big Valley Joint Unified, Mountain Union and Indian Springs School Districts. Contestants will be judged on the following: 30% - Personal Interview 30% - Speech 10% - Impromptu Question 15% - Appropriate Apparel/Overall Visual Presentation 15% - Participation A considerable portion of the judging score rides on the ability to communicate effectively. The night of the program, before the girls arrive on stage the contestants go through a personal interview, with the judges. This is much like a real life job interview. A lot of emphasis is added to their speech that they present during the program. It is their chance to tell the audience who they are and how they have become such wonderful ladies. It’s also where they can really convince the judges that they are confident enough to become an ambassador for the Inter-Mountain Fair. In addition to the speech, an impromptu question is drawn out of a hat by the contestant. They answer it to the best of their ability while they are on stage. Appropriate apparel and Overall Visual Presentation: All of the girls are advised about the importance of appropriate attire, and how to show poise and gracefulness. Each Contestants will be judged in a business style suit, casual wear, western wear and a floor length formal. To obtain the all 15 points in the participation section of the program, contestants are expected to be present at all practices and events throughout the competition. Not only will students build portable solar units, they will also participate in local sustainability projects and have a chance to make a global impact by distributing solar kits to certain countries in Africa, Haiti and other energy-poor regions of the world. The kits, called We Share Solar Suitcases®, are small, portable photovoltaic lighting systems, powerful enough to illumi- nate a small room. PG&E will provide more than 100 of them to high schools in Northern and Central California, supplied by the nonprofit, We Care Solar. The schools who receive the kits will be trained to use them by We Care Solar and will learn firsthand the basic principles of producing clean energy. Students will then be invited to submit videos of their own local sustainability projects. Winning schools will choose student and teacher representatives to deliver solar suitcases to orphanages, schools and medical clinics in Kenya with international charity Free the Children. Additional suitcases will be sent to energy-poor regions around the world. This Solar Suitcase collaboration adds a global dimension to PG&E’s commitment to STEM education and renewable energy. In total, PG&E has given $75 million to educational initiatives in Northern and Central California over the past decade. Schools interested in participating in the program can apply now through May 31. Learn more about the Solar Suitcase program by visiting pge.com/solarsuitcase or PG&E Currents for coverage and footage of last year’s program. Through the 2015 Better Together Giving Program, PG&E contributed more than $25 million to nearly 1,600 charitable organizations. THE INTERMOUNTAIN NEWS • MAY 25, 2016 • PAGE 5A SPORTS Lady Raiders clash with Maxwell in Division VI playoff opener The seventh-seeded lady Raiders faced the second-seeded Maxwell Panthers to open the Northern Section Division VI softball playoffs May 17 at the Maxwell diamond. Burney held the early advantage and scored in each of the first five innings. But the host Panthers took advantage of midinning rallies to take control of the scoreboard and closed out a 16-6 victory. Burney opened the contest with a two-run first inning and tacked on runs in the second and third for a 4-0 edge. Maxwell rallied for four runs in the third, aided by two illegal pitches that extended the inning. The Panthers pounded out seven runs in fourth to stake an 11-5 lead. Both teams added a run in the fifth, then the Panthers posted four more in the sixth for a 10-run stoppage. “The illegal pitches were some tough calls to go against us,” said Burney coach Kevin Luntey. “The (Burney) girls played great. They had 14 hits and I really feel we were the better team. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out so we have to move on.” Megan Arseneau opened the contest with a leadoff double, sparking a two-run rally for the early advantage. She finished the day going 4 for 4 at the plate with two RBIs. Carissa Tereba and Maddie Luntey each went 2 for 2 with a RBI. Lauren Schneider knocked in a pair of runs and Joyce Ogden went 2 for 4 with two runs. Lady Bulldogs take Division VI crown The Fall River softball team capped the season with a Division VI championship, defeating the Maxwell Panthers Saturday, 13-4. “Our girls picked the right time to play their best game of the season,” said Fall River coach Jeremy McFarlin. “We hit the ball well and played great defense. Everybody contributed, and to score 13 runs on Maxwell is saying something.” The lady Bulldogs took control early, plating six runs in the first inning and one in the second for 7-0 advantage. Maxwell got on the board in the third inning but couldn’t keep the ‘Dogs collared. Fall River got the run back in the fourth to keep the margin at seven, 8-1. The Panthers scored one Chester slips by Raiders in 10-inning playoff semifinal The fifth-seeded Burney Raiders traveled to Chester last Tuesday looking to upset the topseeded Volcanoes in the Division VI baseball playoff semifinal. The Raiders played what was likely their best game of season, but fell to the No. 1-seed in 10 innings, 6-5. Chester scored first and held a slim advantage through most of the game. Burney rallied to score a pair of runs in the seventh, tying the game at 5. The Volcanoes were kept at bay until the bottom of the tenth, scoring the winning run on a suicide squeeze, advancing to the Northern Section championship. Burney coach Rick Kohnhorst, said the pride of the Raider performance outweighs the disappointment of the loss. “The guys played great,” he said. Pitching, defense, hitting, they did everything right and almost pulled off the upset. “I’m just so proud of the guys and all the progress they made throughout the year.” Burney pitchers Ray Guerrero and Jason Searl combined for 17 strikeouts against just three walks. Guerrero got the start, going 6-2/3 innings with 10 K’s and two free passes. Searl fanned seven batters but none were bigger than the first two. Searl took over with one out and two runners on in the seventh. A strikeout and a walk loaded the bases. The Volcanoes hope for seventh inning walkoff dissipated with Searl’s fastball as the Raiders extended the game. “To watch him (Searl) clutch up like that was awesome,” said Kohnhorst. Searl provided the offensive spark in the top of the seventh with Raiders trailing by two. Searl, leading off the inning reached on an error and went to second on the over throw. The ball was still on the ground in foul territory as Searl reached second and he broke for third sliding in safely just under the tag. The Raiders rallied behind the effort, scoring two runs to extend the game. “That was really a huge play,” said Kohnhorst. “He popped up and told the guys in the dugout that we were going to win this, and the whole team just got fired up.” Chester started the game with a 3-0 edge, and scored single runs in the third, sixth and tenth innings. Burney plated three runs in the third for temporary tie, then squared the board again in the seventh. Guerrero went 3 for 3 at the plate with a double and two RBIs. Kaden Tiran was 3 for 5 with a RBI. Searl went 2 for 4 with a RBI and Chis Semer hit a RBI double. Members of the Fall River girls softball team celebrate following a defeat of Redding Christian, 3-2, at the McArthur diamond Thursday. The win allowed the No. 1 seeded lady Bulldogs to face No. 2 seeded Maxwell on Saturday where Fall River won the NSCIF Div. VI title, 13-4. The last time Fall River won the title was in 1986, having lost to Maxwell in the section finals in 2010, 2011 and 2014. in the fifth and two in the sixth. However, the Bulldogs countered with two and three runs, respectively, to maintain the cushion and closed out the seventh to capture the Northern Section Division VI crown. Laci Denny was the winning pitcher with strikeouts against two walks. She helped her own cause with a bat, going 2 for 2 with a walk and four RBIs. Hallee Olsen went 4 for 5 at the dish with a double and four RBIs. Megan Gallion went 3 for 4 with a RBI, Saydee Pevehouse was 3 for 5 with a RBI and Racheal Wellemeyer was 2 for 5 with three runs scored. The win over Maxwell completed a three-game playoff run for the Fall River crew. The topseeded Bulldogs (24-2) opened the postseason May 17 with a 13-3 win over the Chester Volcanoes. The Bulldogs posted five runs in the first innings held a 12-2 advantage at the end of three innings. Both teams scored a run in the fourth and the Bulldogs closed the fifth for the mercy-rule win. Katie Policastro went 2 for 2 with a triple and three RBIs. Alicia Reynoso was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Olsen went 3 for 3 with a RBI. The toughest challenge for the Bulldogs came in the divisional semifinal against Redding Christian. The third-seeded Lions carried a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Bulldogs rallied to post three runs in their final at-bat to win the contest, 3-2. Policastro started the seventh with a slap single and Gallion reached on an error. Denny walked to load the base and scored on a bunt single from Trinity Markham. With two out, Wellemeyer hit a blooper to left to win the game with a walkoff single. “The girls just did a great job of hanging in there and we got the two-out hit we needed at the end,” said McFarlin. Lions pitcher Reilly Rupert struck out 10 Bulldogs in the loss. Denny fanned two with no walks, backed by stellar defense. Denny went 2 for 3 at the dish and had a stolen base.
