Fireworks on tap
The Saturday fireworks display at Burney High School is
expected to be the largest ever
to grace Burney Basin Days in
its 62-year history. Gates open
at 5 p.m. with entertainment
scheduled throughout the late
afternoon and early evening
before the first rocket lights up
the night sky beginning at 10
p.m. Admission is free.

The annual Strawberry Festival
is scheduled for Saturday from
11-4 at the Old Station Fire Hall.
This is the town’s annual event,
serving homemade shortcake,
fresh strawberries, ice cream
topped with whipped cream.
The cost is $7 per person.
Hat Creek BBQ
The 37th annual Deep Pit barbecue, raffle and craft fair is
scheduled Saturday, July 16, at
the Hat Creek Hereford Ranch
Campground on Doty Road,
off Highway 89, in Hat Creek.
The craft fair is planned from
10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with dinner
served from 1-5 p.m. There is
also a lake to swim or fish in, ice
cream, T-shirts with the duck on
the back and more. The event is
a fundraiser for the Hat Creek
volunteer fire department.
Volunteers needed
The Intermountain chapter of
Meals on Wheels is in need
of volunteer drivers who can
commit to 2-3 hours one day per
month delivering meals in either
the Fall River Valley, Burney or
Cassel areas. Contact Bill Shannon at 335-4979 for more information.

On June 22 at about
5:30 p.m., deputies from
the Shasta County sheriff’s office attempted to
contact J Tucker “JT”
Bellegante, 19, at his
residence in the 38000
block of Highway 299, in
Burney.
Bellegante had three
active no-bail felony warrants for his arrest. The
warrants were for failing
to appear on a felony
charge, narcotic sales,
and vehicle theft.
“When deputies initially arrived they were
advised by family that
Bellegante was not at the
location,” said Sgt. Quentin Johnston.
“While speaking with
family members, deputies observed a stolen
drum set at the residence
which was taken during
a residential burglary in
McArthur a few weeks
prior,” Quentin said.
During the investigation, deputies observed
a white Honda sedan
approaching the property
from a dirt road to the
rear of the residence.
“Deputies attempted
to contact the driver, who

County agency answers
mental housing questions
A project to provide
permanent rental housing for up to 10 persons
with mental illness is
moving forward in eastern Shasta County.
The
more
than
$700,000 project targets adults with serious
mental illness and/or children with serious emotional disturbance and
their families.
The Shasta County
Health and Human Services Agency held two
meetings in Burney,
one on May 24 and the
second on June 21, to
hear any concerns from
the community about the
project and answer questions.
Those eligible for
housing must be an
individual who is underserved or unengaged
with mental health services and must be homeless, or at risk of homelessness, or at risk of
multiple hospitalizations,
or at risk of incarceration.
The individual must
also meet the low income
requirement at or below
30 percent of area
median income.
The individual must
also not be on parole
and, for the program in
the Intermountain area,
the individual must be a
current member of the
Intermountain area community.
One of the questions
asked whether there was
secure ongoing funding
for the program.
Though there are no
guarantees, the funding
involved is expected to
support this project for
a minimum of 20 years,
county health and human
services officials said.
There are an estimated 289 individuals
living in eastern Shasta
County with a diagnosed
serious mental illness.

In response to the
drought, Pacific Gas
and Electric Company
(PG&E) is patrolling by
helicopter to check for
drought-stricken
trees
near power lines.
Flights are scheduled
to occur in remote areas
in eastern Shasta County
on Thursday.
Residents are advised
that the helicopter will fly
low – about 200 to 300
feet – along distribution
power lines.
Thursday’s
flights
will occur over the Fall
River Mills region, along
the Highway 89 corridor
north of Highway 299,
and around the Pit River
including Lake Britton
and upstream and downstream of the lake.
PG&E is using a contract helicopter service to
fly foresters to check for
trees weakened by the
drought.
This patrol is in addition to the annual patrols
PG&E does along power
lines to identify trees and
vegetation in need of
pruning and removal.

After graduating Shasta
College Tammy attended
Humboldt State in Arcata,
California
where
she
majored in sports medicine. Tammy became the
first female student trainer
to travel with the Humbolt
State football team.
She then became the
first female trainer for the
Bakersfield Blaze, A pro
baseball team.
Returning home she
worked as a physical therapist assistant for a number
of years. It was at this time
she became involved with
Little League again, this
time as a coach. She loved
coaching both softball and
baseball. She also coached
the Burney High School
softball team and assisted
the football team as a volunteer trainer.
Eventually Tammy went
from therapy to day care.
She was not blessed with
children of her own, but
through day care she was
able to touch the lives of
many children.
She loved working with
children in sports, as a
loving day care provider
and a wonderful aunt.
Second to her love for
children was her love for
Christmas, Disneyland and
the Dodgers.
She
felt
Christmas
should be celebrated year
round, Disneyland was a
place to go anytime and
the Dodgers were always
number one.
Tammy is survived by her
mother and father, Georgina and Jerry Monath, a
brother, Jared Monath of
Redding, her niece, Nicole
Monath of Eureka, two
nephews, Ryan and Jason
Monath of Redding and
many family members and
friends.
A Celebration of Life will
be held on Saturday, July
9, 2016, at 2 p.m. in the IM
Free Church in McArthur.

Carlos Leroy Dunlap,
Jr., of McArthur, passed
away on
June 20,
2016 at
his home

He was
75 years old.
Carlos was born on
December 16, 1940 to Roy
and Betty Dunlap in Santa
Monica, California.
Carlos
worked
for
exactly 50 years as a Director of Physical Therapy in
Oxnard, California, and Fall
River Mills. He lived the last
29 years in Modoc County.
Carlos was a true nature
lover, a rock hound, and a
gemologist at heart. He was
a master butterfly collector
and a handyman. He could
make, build, or fix anything!
Carlos is survived by his
wife, Christine; his children,
Tina (Scott) Dunlap-Hamm,
Carl (Kristin) Dunlap, and
Tim (Brooke) Thomas;
his brother, Mark (Tania)
Dunlap; and six grandchildren: Dylan, Garrett, Bryce,
Corinne, Tyler, and Blake.
A celebration of Carlos’
life will be held Saturday,
July 9th at 1 p.m. at the Day
Community Center.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be
made to Intermountain
Hospice, 43563 Highway

Deputies arrest 1
for felony warrants

Deputies were able to surround the vehicle and the
driver was detained without
further incident.
The driver was identified
as Bellegante. The vehicle
Bellegante arrived in was
found to be stolen out of
McArthur the day prior,
Johnston said.
Bellegante was arrested
for his active warrants, possessing stolen property,
and possessing a stolen
vehicle.
“During further investi-
gation a side-by-side ATV
stolen from McArthur was
also recovered,” Johnston
said.
“The ATV was one of two
stolen from an agriculture
farm within the past week.
The second ATV has yet to
be recovered,” he added.

Our country, or so it seems, runs on choice. The
more choices we have, the better we like it.
Most people in America pride themselves on the
ability to make their own choices.
“Freedom of Choice,” is the cry you hear all around
our country these days. Yet, most people do not have
the freedom of choice they think they have. Somebody
is influencing the choices they make without them realizing they are being influenced.
That is called marketing.
The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage and I were
watching television the other night, trying to watch a
favorite TV program. Finally, from an end of the room
that was not my end, came an exasperated sigh. I tried
to ignore it, but you know how that works.
The exasperation seemed to accelerate and I knew
that if I did not acknowledge it in some way, well, I think
you know what would happen.
It was in the middle of some commercials and so I
turned to her and said, “What’s got you in such pain
tonight?” At her age I did not know if there was some
medical something or other going on.
“These commercials,” she moaned so painfully, “I
can’t stand all these commercials!”
I must say I was a little bummed out about all the
commercials myself. I think every one-hour program is
devoted to 30 minutes of commercials. Most of those
commercials are for things I have no interest in. Or,
they are played at a very inappropriate time. I’m sorry,
but I do not love my laxative!
It never fails if we are having our supper while watching television there are 79 commercials for diarrhea. Is
this really a major problem in our country today?
Getting back to my wife and the commercials, I
responded as cheerfully as I could, “Well, my dear,
somebody has to pay for our television viewing privilege.”
I felt a cold yet burning stare in my direction.
“Can’t they run those lousy commercials when I’m
not watching TV?”
Someone once said that silence is Golden and right
then I cultivated a golden moment.
Commercials are a way in which manufacturing
companies influence our choices. Every product has
100 different companies marketing the same product.
I have not done too much research but the little I have
done I discovered that the same company makes the
same product but sells it under a different name.
There are two categories of products. There is the
name brand, which cost a fortune. Then there is the
generic brand, which is only a fraction of what the
name brand cost. It is the same product, made by the
same company, but advertised by difference venues.
This is where choice comes in.
Some people choose the high-priced product
because they think it is better.
Some of us choose the low-price product because
we know better.
Another night as we were watching television, it
seemed most of the commercials had to do with dieting
of some kind. There were high calorie diets, low-carb
diets and diets that really did not make sense to me.
Watching all of those dieting commercials, I did not
see one that I would die for.
Every one of those commercials assumes everybody watching wants to lose 297 pounds. Personally, I
have lost the same 5 pounds for over 30 years. I lose 5
pounds and then by golly, three weeks later I find those
5 pounds, at least they recognize me.
Anybody can lose weight; it is all a matter of choice.
Personally, I do not plan to lose any sleep because I
cannot lose weight. I think it is going to be rather funny
if when we go to heaven everybody is fat. Wouldn’t that
be something? We plummet ourselves almost to death
trying to lose weight and get to heaven and everybody
is fat.
It all boils down to choice and the fact that most
people think they are making their own choices.
Those of us who are on the husband side of the marital equation know we do not make our own choices.
Our choices are made for us by our “better half.” Why
do you think we get married?
My wife is a great one for fruit and vegetables. Every
day of our life is fruit and vegetables. To mix things up a
little bit one day it will be vegetables and fruit.
She prepares the fruit and then invites me to make
a choice. I am sure she did not see all of this in any
television commercial; at least I hope she hasn’t. She
is proud of the display of fruit choices she has for me.
She is also concerned about my diet. Much more
than I am. I do not think my diet is so important that
both of us should be concerned about it. If she chooses
to be concerned about my diet, that is her choice.
I choose to be a little more cavalier when it comes
to dieting.
Actually, and do not tell her I said this, but my fruit of
choice is the humble Apple fritter. It has everything my
heart desires and a few things my body desires, too.
I like with David said, “Delight thyself also in the
LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine
heart” (Psalms 37:4 KJV).
It is all a matter of choice, that is, making the right
choice. it.

What is really
killing the
pine trees?
Editor:
This week the Record
Searchlight
published
an article entitled “Feds:
Drought kills 66 million
trees in California’s Sierra”.
The article indicates the
central and southern Sierra
being the hardest hit by the
drought, bark beetle, and
warmer temperatures.
It also states the Direc-
tor of the Sierra Club California said “the die-off from
drought should signal to
policy makers the urgency
of curbing pollution that contributes to climate change”.
All you ever hear from
mainstream media, and
their sources, is that the
die-off of trees is due to the
California drought, which
stresses the trees, and
allows them to be invaded
by the bark beetle.
They fail to mention that
unprecedented tree die-offs
are also happening in many
places across the United
States, in areas where there
is no drought to blame it on.
In a past Letter to the
Editor, I mentioned the
Geoengineering effort our
Government is pursuing
to minimize the sun’s heat
input to the planet by spraying toxic chemicals into the
upper atmosphere, to produce clouds, which lead to
increase rain and snow fall
in many areas.
Research has clearly
shown these chemicals are
toxic to trees and vegeta-
tion. Isn’t it curious that the
Sierra Nevada, which collects a significant amount of
rain and snowfall is the area
most affected by die-off.
From my perspective,
this die-off looks has a mini
resemblance to what areas
looked like after being
sprayed by “Agent Orange”
during the Vietnam war.
Whether you believe in
Chemtrails and toxic chemical dispersants or not, it is
a reality, there is substantial
research showing it is happening.
Again, just look up!
It is also curious, you
never hear policy makers,
Forest Service officials,
and those involved with the
Geoengineering Program,
ever talk about how these
chemicals, once brought
to ground level by rain
and snowfall might have
an impact on our forested
areas.
You never hear about
Federal Research that may
show these chemicals can
in fact contribute to tree dieoff. Why is that?
It may be that these
chemicals, toxic as they
appear to be, and the
damage they may cause,
is a trade off to offset the
effects of Global Warming
and Climate Change.
I agree, there should be
urgency in telling the policy
makers, stop polluting our
atmosphere with these
toxic chemicals, you are
contributing to massive tree
die-offs.

and a lot of fun fishing,

a measuring tape, a scorecard and will be given the
opportunity for some good
old-fashioned fun, he said.
Saturday is a free fishing day as designated by
the California Department
of Fish and Wildlife so no
license will be required.
Collins will be a senior
and enjoys fishing himself. He also enjoys playing football and baseball.

In honor of Independence Day, learn the

To prepare for the picture, Arthur
would take his 25 pound camera to the top
of a wooden tower. Then he would use hand
signals and a flag to direct John Thomas and
other helpers where to mark the ground to
match an outline made on the glass of Arthur’s camera. Next, Arthur needed to figure
out the shades needed for each section of the
black-and-white photograph. Bareheaded
soldiers in T-shirts would stand in areas that
needed to look white. Soldiers in full uniform would make up the dark areas.
On the day they took the picture,
Mole and Thomas directed the soldiers
where to stand. In the Statue of Liberty photo, the soldiers were spread out over 1,235
feet. That’s the length of three and one-half
football fields! Because the soldiers in the
“flame” of the torch were so far away from
the camera, there were twice as many men
in that part of the statue as in the body. In
less than a week, 12,000 sodluers in the flame
of the torch, 2,800 in the torch, 1,200 in the
right arm, and 2,000 in the rest of the body
cane together to celebrate one of America’s
most popular symbols.
