“Team Sweep” is at it again….two matches…two sweeps…two wins…too crazy! The first
“brooming” happened this past Wednesday versus #4 ranked Pasadena. The defending
conference champs were not their usual gritty self as the Warriors used the El Camino “dust
pan” and won the match by scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-20. The win has given the Warriors
the edge to capture their ninth conference title in the last ten seasons. Kaitlyn and Lauren
Edwards, the twin standouts from West Torrance High were the leaders in the match. Kaitlyn
Edwards posted a team-leading 12 kills, three blocks and 12 digs, and Lauren Edwards had 12
kills and one block. "We cheer each other on, for sure," Lauren Edwards said. "When she gets a
kill, I get fired up, and when I get a kill, she gets fired up." Added Kaitlyn Edwards: "There's
definitely some competition between us, but she's my best friend on the court."
Friday was a sweep of LA Harbor where the freshman dominated for the Warriors (19-2,10-0).
In a match where all members were involved, Erika Wilvang (5 kills) and Miranda Gagnier (8
kills 3 blocks) and Lauren Simmons (8 kills 4 blocks) led the way.

Men’s Soccer
The high hopes the men had for a playoff berth have all but been diminished. After a solid start
to the season, the men have not fared well in conference play. Tuesday’s 5-1 loss to a strong
East LA team was possibly the final opportunity for a late season rally. However, the Warriors
responded with a great effort at Long Beach for a 2-0 victory. The Warriors now are 8-7-4
overall and 2-7-3 in SCC games.

Women’s Soccer
Keep it rolling; I say…the women, who are now ranked #9 in the latest playoff poll, had a good
week of shutout soccer. Tuesday as the “not so nice hosts”, the Warriors defeated the Lancers
of Pasadena by a score of 4-0. Natalie Soto scored two goals to lead the El Camino charge. On
Friday the women visited Long Beach City and captured another road victory by a score of 1-0.
Shannon Hornbeck scored the lone goal for the playoff seeking Warriors who now have a
record of 10-6-3 overall and 5-4-3 in the SCC.

“They’re back……..the Warrior defense created a late turnover forced by Jordan Tavi of Mira
Costa HS, that stopped a late 4th quarter rally by visiting Allan Hancock College (3-6,0-4) that
helped El Camino hold on for a much needed 29-21 win.
"It tastes a lot better to win than to lose," said El Camino coach John Featherstone. "Hancock is
a good football team and they were pounding us in the second half. In this league, you've got to
play four quarters. We haven't been doing that. But our defense made plays when we needed it
most."
Royce Lewis' 43-yard interception return for a touchdown in the opening minute of the third
quarter was the difference. Lewis' pick 55 seconds into the second half gave El Camino a 29-7
advantage and it appeared the Warriors were headed for a rout. But penalties and a struggling
offense prevented it as Hancock mounted their second half rally. Top contributions came from
the efforts of Peter Walton (20 carries 95 yards), Omar Herrera (12 of 21 134 yards) and the
electrifying touchdown run of 66 yards, off a fake punt, by Scholar-Baller, Matthew Moro.
The Warriors (1-8,1-3), in spite of some misfortune and inconsistent play still have an outside
chance for a post-season bowl berth providing they are successful next weekend in Ventura.

DAVID CARDONA WINS TITLE!

ECC MEN come through big in 3rd Place!

ECC's DAVID CARDONA continued his impressive season pulling away in the last mile to
win the Southern California Title leading the Men's Team to a 3rd place finish in the 28Team field. Teammate and friend JOSE LEZAMA kicked big down the homestretch to
take 3rd almost nabbing 2nd at the line!
After running comfortably in the lead pack of 10-15 for the first mile, Lezama got things going
taking the lead and opening a 10 meter gap going into the 2nd mile. A small group of 5 were the
only ones capable of taking chase with David sitting comfortably in 3rd/4th most of the way on this
breezy day. David took the lead for good with a mile remaining and coasted to victory in 20:22 to
Jose's 3rd place 20:28. Quite a way back to begin but again moving up steadily throughout the race
were the freshmen pack of ANTHONY LEWIS in 28th (21:36); JUSTIN CARACOZA in 44th
(22:04); ALEX VILLAESCUSA in 61st (22:16); JONATHAN NAKAI in 63rd (22:18); and JON
BARTOLAZZI in 79th (22:35). Collectively, the ECC Men scored 137 points putting them in the
3rd spot and easily qualifying to the approaching State Championships on a day that saw some
previously top-ranked teams falter a bit.

ECC's DAVID CARDONA was voted SCC Athlete-of-the-Year
and
COACH DEAN LOFGREN voted SCC Men's Coach-of-the-Year.
NAOMI ALTAMIRANO Qualifies to State Championships!
The ECC's Women's Team was notified that they had advanced to the Southern California
Championships as an At-Large team late in the week. Taking advantage of the opportunity sophomore
NAOMI ALTAMIRANO placed 54th (20:56) and frosh ANDREA WEBBER 98th (21:50) on the sluggish,
thick-grass 5,000m course overlooking Mission Bay. Supporting teammates KARA KALMAR (131st),
MILCHU PEREZ (171st), and JULISSA PEREZ (194th) helped ECC to a 25th place team finish with
Southwestern winning, Glendale 2nd, and LA Trade Tech 3rd.

ECC ALUMNI this weekend:
At the CCAA Championships Saturday hosted by Cal Poly Pomona:
RYAN RAYA (Torrance/ECC/San Francisco State) placed 28th in 26:08 on the 8k course to help lead his
San Francisco State University team to 4th place and COURTNEY STEPHENS (San Pedro/ECC/San
Francisco State) placed 4th in 23:44 on the 6k course in helping lead her San Francisco State University
team to 7th place in preparation for the approaching NCAA Regionals. REBECCA CARACOZA (San
Pedro/ECC/CSU Dominguez Hills) came off an illness to place 93dr in 26:15 on the 6k course.
The El Camino Men's Team along with Naomi ADVANCE to the STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
held Saturday November 20th at
Woodward Park; Fresno. The men again expect solid competition from the the
same familiar Southern California teams we have faced all season with the
addition of the North's American River, Hartnell, and Modesto college's all
solid and within 22 points of each other at this weekend's
Northern California Championships. The women's race is at 10:00 with the
men to follow at 11:00.

Women’s Basketball
“WOW” is the only explanation for the Lady Warriors last Saturday. In a performance
unmatched in recent years, Noelini Tuiasoa had 42 points, seven rebounds and four steals as El
Camino defeated Allan Hancock, 107-74, in its nonconference season opener. Tuiasoa was 21for-28 from the field while teammate Briana Hunt added 22 points, 11 rebounds and seven
assists. Kristen Dresser had 15 points and Kay Hurd added 12 points and seven rebounds for El
Camino (1-0).

Men’s Basketball
This past week the men opened the season season by hosting the Paul Landreaux Classic on
Friday and Saturday. Friday’s game saw the “Cousins of Compton” playing the Warriors in
Game 1. The Tartars, inspired by a new head coach, a relentless defense and a highly
energized crowd toppled the Warriors, 86-61. In a game that was tight at halftime and back and
forth early, Compton’s defense guarded the rim to deny El Camino’s chances of an opening
night victory. Game 2 on Saturday saw the Warriors facing the Wildcats of West LA. This outing
proved to be a different story as it was the El Camino defense that was stingy and propelled the
Warriors to the 63-53 victory (1-1).

Warriors remember…
Sadly, longtime El Camino fan Dick Oglesbee, who volunteered for Warrior Athletics in many
capacities over the years, passed away on Saturday. Dick, who was so grateful for any chance
to help our athletes, will be missed by the Warrior family. Please keep Dick and his family in
your prayers.
