WINTER ISSUE 2012 No Will Power Required The holidays are here, and tis’ the season to overindulge in crispy fried turkey, buttered dinner rolls, and - of course grandma’s sweet potato casserole with that heavenly marshmallow topping. As family members roll out the door and your Christmas feast of seconds and thirds is digesting, you begin to feel the emotional aftermath of your excessive “celebrating”. Chances are that in lieu of our turkey hangover we will inevitably make impossible (although well intended) New Year’s resolutions. Well, it’s almost 2013, and - THIS will be the year you make your resolutions and actually follow through. The reason why most resolutions are a bust is because they are generally unrealistic and involve too much of a drastic change in your everyday life. The key to success in keeping a resolution is to set a realistic goal for yourself that, over the course of the entire year, will improve yourself or your life in some way. Here is a list of New Year’s resolutions that cost nothing and require minimum effort – but if you stay committed to them could have a big and positive impact on your life this year. Take the stairs: Going to the gym everyday is a common new year’s resolution. Make that promise to incorporate more physical activity into your everyday life. For example: Skip the elevator and take the stairs. It’s simple and you can burn 7 to 10 calories per minute. Smile at more random people: In the middle of this chaotic world, we struggle daily with worry and stress. Although we may not realize it, we have an impact on everyone around us. So, instead of going throughout your day frustrated by the weight on your shoulders, smile. Smile about the good things in your life and all you have to be thankful for. You just might make somebody’s day. Take more naps: To every nap lovers’ delight, we have studies proving the serious benefits of a daily nap. No, I’m not talking about pulling down the shades and crawling into bed type of nap. A good 20-30 minute snooze can really perk up your day. A nap restores your alertness, prevents burnouts, heightens sensory perception, makes you more productive, and even prevents heart disease. So the next time you reach for your third cup of coffee, consider a little shut eye instead. Eat in more than you eat out: After the hustle n’ bustle from the demanding day, we often reach for the take out menu or head to the nearest restaurant for a quick fix. Maybe make it a goal for 2013 to brush up on your culinary skills and fix the family a healthy and inexpensive feast. Eat more fruits and veggies: We’ve all heard it before, “Eat your vegetables, they’re good for you.” When we were kids mom didn’t give us much of a choice, but as adults our eating habits tend to not be as strict. A few easy ways to incorporate our daily dose is to boost your breakfast -- add bananas or strawberries to your oatmeal or cereal. Say yes to salads – don’t pass up the opportunity to supersize your salad with extra greens and easily get half of your daily servings. Don’t skip dessert – It’s your last chance in the day to sneak in a serving or two of fruit. Pile on some peaches or blueberries to your favorite frozen yogurt or blend and freeze to make some refreshing popsicles. Save the date on March 9th for Pelican Point’s 6th Annual Fireman’s Fundraiser The Greens Scene By Millie Matherne ON A MISSION-- With Bobbie and Ronnie Hughes Mitt Romney may be one of the most well-known Mormons today, but you would be hard pressed to meet two nicer, more honest, sincere, and giving people than Bobbie and Ronnie Hughes. Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, they recently returned home to the Greens after a six-month mission trip in Bad Axe, Michigan. The couple is definitely faith and family oriented. Family prayer in the morning and night is important in the Mormon faith. It’s how Bobbie and Ronnie start and end each day. The Mormon Church encourages service by its members, especially seniors who have so many life experiences to draw from. After some soul searching and prayer, the couple left the comforts of home from March to October to help people they had never met before. Ronnie loves his farm in Mississippi, so he was in his glory on the flat farmlands of Michigan even though it was 1300 miles away. Bobbie says being away from family and friends was the hardest part and admits to being particularly happy to be back in Gonzales before the cold Michigan winter. The friendliness of the people was a pleasant surprise for Bobbie. “We from the South don’t usually think of Northerners as being welcoming, but the people we met were. And very humble, too,” she said. “For Louisiana night, Ronnie and I cooked jambalaya and gumbo. We are definitely not the best cooks, but they thought the food was delicious. They just didn’t know any better,” smiled Bobbie. Their main purpose was to help get less active church members back to church. Also, the local Retired Seniors Volunteer Program coordinator suggested several community service projects. Bobbie and Ronnie volunteered at food banks and soup kitchens, drove people to church and medical appointments, cleaned yards, spruced up homes. They also prayed, listened, and encouraged. Many of you reading this column probably know that Ronnie was Ascension Parish President for four years. He may not recall that he once told me, “I consider any political office to be one of public service – service to the people. I believe we should all volunteer some of our time and talents to serve others.” Now that’s not only talking the talk, but walking the walk… Mission Accomplished!! Dove Estates Block Party Neighborhood block parties provide the opportunity for neighbors to meet and socialize with one another. They help build community spirit and strengthen relationships. Block parties also allow neighbors to share ideas, compare safety information, participate in friendly conversations, and indulge in great food! The Pelican Point HOA is encouraging everyone to begin planning the next block party in your area. We have put together a guide to help better assist you on the step by step process. For each block party, the HOA will be available to help with advertising, supplies (tables, popcorn/snowball machine, tents), and up to $100 towards food or drinks. Last month, Dove Estates hosted their first successful Block Party. Hosted at Hickley and Judy Waguespack’s, where Chef Bill and Pam Dawson cooked up their famous recipes of jambalaya and white beans. Accompanied were delicious desserts and side dishes provided by each neighbor. It was a great opportunity to allow new and old neighbors to gather and socialize in between our hectic lifestyles.
