OUNTER-CULTURE hero
and 1960s protest singer Bob
Dylan got a rapturous welcome
from
fans
on
Wednesday at his first gig in
China, despite agreeing to sing an
approved set so as not to offend political
sensitivities.
Famous for his songs against injustice
and for civil liberties and pacifism, Dylan
struck a cautious line in Beijing and did
not sing anything that might have overtly
offended China’s Communist rulers, like
The Times They Are A-Changin’.
On stage for almost two hours at the
city’s Worker’s Gymnasium, Dylan
brought the audience to a standing ovation with his penultimate song, All Along
the Watchtower, and came back for two
encores. Like a Rolling Stone also proved
popular.
He spoke only once directly to the
crowd of some 5,000 people — mostly
young Chinese though with a strong foreign presence — and that was to introduce his band.
“I was a little disappointed that he didn’t sing many of his songs because of the
politics,” said Zhang Tian, 30, a Beijing
lawyer. “What is the government so
afraid of?”
Dylan’s gravelly voice, which made his
lyrics hard to pick out even for native
speakers of English, would have flummoxed many Chinese in the crowd in any
case.
Promoters tried to bring Dylan to
China last year, but the Culture Ministry
did not give its approval, as is required for
any concert in the country.
China’s agreement this year came with
the proviso that Dylan “performed with
the approved content,” according to a
brief statement issued last month by the
ministry, which gave no other details.

Dylan’s concert comes at a sensitive time in
China, where musicians and artists have always
had to contend with at least a measure of
government control and censorship
Bob Dylan (Right) performs with his band onstage during his concert at The Worker’s
Gymnasium in Beijing, China.
Dylan’s concert comes at a sensitive
time in China, where musicians and
artists have always had to contend with at
least a measure of government control
and censorship.
Over the weekend renowned Chinese
contemporary artist Ai Weiwei was taken
into custody at Beijing airport and has
not been heard from since, in the latest
part of a sweeping campaign to stifle dissent.
Beijing perhaps ought not to have been
so worried. While some Western artists
such as Lady Gaga and Celine Dion are
wildly popular in China, especially with
young people in the big cities, the aging
Dylan is much less well-known.
“I know his songs from karaoke, but
I’m really not that familiar with him,”
said advertising executive Yin Yang, 24.
“Still I think this was a historic concert
and I’m glad I’ve seen him.”
One state-run newspaper, the Global
Times, a popular tabloid run by
Communist Party mouthpiece the
People’s Daily, sniffed that Dylan had
Startalk
Lifeline
nothing to say to the man on the street in
China.
“The subject of Dylan’s songs, from
drugs to racial equality to human dignity
to war, are not on the radar of the average
Chinese person, who is more interested
in taking care of his or her family,” it
wrote in its English language edition.
However, American studies professor
Teng Jimeng said Dylan’s musical messages of justice and world peace were just
as meaningful today as when he first sang
them.
“Dylan is still relevant to us because ...
Blowin’ in the Wind is an anti-war song
and also A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall is
an anti-war song,” Teng said. “And Dylan
means a lot to us still because the world is
still at war.”
“Baobo Dilun,” as he is known in
Chinese, will also perform in China’s
commercial capital Shanghai later in the
week.
China’s censors are notoriously sensitive not just to subversive political content, but also references to sex, drugs and
religion.
In 2006, Beijing demanded the Rolling
Stones exclude five of their racier numbers for their first show in China, including Brown Sugar and “Let’s Spend the
Night Together,” due to lyrics deemed
too risqué for mild-mannered Chinese.
Visits by Western singers and bands to
China are still fairly rare, though increasing.
Their shows don’t always go off
smoothly.
In 2008, Icelandic singer Bjork shouted “Tibet! Tibet!” at a Shanghai concert
after performing her song Declare
Independence, angering the government
and local fans alike.
But Dylan’s words were lost to many in
the crowd.
“He has songs the government could
consider sensitive? Really?” asked Xiao
Shu, 36. “I just like the music.”
Wedding bells for Britney, Jason Trawick?
Tina Fey expecting second child
SINGER Britney Spears seems to be planning to walk down the aisle for the
third time. Spears, who has been dating Hollywood agent Jason Trawick, 39,
for over two years has hinted at soon tying the knot with him. “We have
such a great time together! He makes me laugh, and we are so comfortable
being ourselves. I’ve never been happier!” usmagazine.com quoted her as saying. Asked about her marriage plans, she said: “Maybe. Never say never!” A
family source says, “(Jason) was someone she felt she could be her true self
with. (Marriage) is what they talk about and the direction they’re going in.”
IT’S baby news for Tina Fey! The 30 Rock star is pregnant, a rep for the star
confirmed on Wednesday. This will be the second child for Tina and her husband, Jeff Richmond, a composer. The pair already have a 5-year-old daughter - Alice. According to People, Tina revealed the news while taping an
appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show on Wednesday, as she promoted
her new book, Bossypants. The taped segment is reportedly set to air on
April 12. Tina recently revealed to InStyle magazine that it is daughter Alice,
who is her mom’s boss. “Kids are definitely the boss of you,” she said.

If the train-catching sequence in the promo of Lara Dutta’s
debut production Chalo Dilli gives you a sense of deja vu, it was
meant to be! The actress admits that she took inspiration from
1995 blockbuster Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ). “There
is one scene in the film where I run to catch the train and
Vinay’s character Manu...he extends his hand to pull me onto
the train. And, of course, we were inspired by DDLJ,” said Lara.
Lara, however, rules out there was ever an intent to outdo the
chemistry of the original scene. “In no way are we ever going to
compete with a film like DDLJ. It’s just that when something
inspires you, you try and give an ode to it. So that scene is
inspired by DDLJ, yet it is quite unique in its own,” she added.
SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE actress Freida Pinto, who is the face of
L’Oreal, says she drinks a lot of vegetable juice to keep her skin
beautiful. “I make loads of fresh vegetable juices with coriander
or pepper so that it’s tastier. The concoction makes my skin
glow and is good for the digestive system too,” she said.
Despite being considered one of the most beautiful women in
the world, the 26-year-old star admits she used to have doubts
about her body and looks, reports contactmusic.com. “When you
doubt something about yourself, you start thinking there’s also
something wrong with your hair, your body or your clothes.”

I’m not a rocket that
can be launched
repeatedly: Shraddha
IANS
HAKTI Kapoor’s daughter Shraddha, who made
her debut with Teen
Patti, has bagged lead
role in Luv Ka The End
and says she takes it as another
opportunity to prove her mettle.
“I didn’t consider my first film as
my launch pad. People exaggerated
that a star kid is being launched. I
am not a rocket that I would be
launched repeatedly. Honestly, in
my first film, I got an opportunity
to show that I can act and this is the
second one,” Shraddha said in an
interview.
Y-films is launching a new face
Taaha Shah opposite Shraddha in
Luv ka The End, which is slated to
release on May 6.
There was no dearth of big names
in the cast of director Leena
Yadav’s Teen Patti - from
S
Bollywood megastar Amitabh
Bachchan to Hollywood veteran
Ben Kingsley were present in it, but
they couldn’t turn the movie into a
profitable box office venture.
“I met people who had never
heard of Teen Patti. It hurts. I was
really low when it didn’t do well.
First film really matters. If first film
doesn’t work, it’s very difficult to
get your second film,” said
Shraddha.
“In fact, after Teen Patti, I auditioned for another film and I was
finalised for it. But then someone
else was taken for that part. I
cried a lot,” she added.
Shraddha left no stones
unturned to fair through
the audition of Luv ka
The End.
“Luckily, I have got
an opportu-
nity to work in the film. I thought
either you cry or do something
about it. When I got a call for the
audition, I made sure that anyhow
I have to get it. So I worked very
hard, I worked harder than I
expected myself to do,” said
Shraddha.
Y-Films, a youth films studio of
Yash Raj Films, will give opportunities to fresh crop of directors and
actors. It is ready with three films Luv Ka The End and Virus Diwan both directed by Bumpy and
Mujhse
Fraaandship
Karoge, which is
directed by Nupur
Asthana.

Tapsee sets sight on Bollywood
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
ERE she goes to join the long list of
South Indian actresses who have
ended up signing a Bollywood film
post their successful debut in Tamil
or Telugu. She appeared as the docile angloindian chic in Vetri Maaran’s Aadukalam which
brought her decent appreciation from the critics.
Now Tapsee, has revealed that she has signed
the dotted line for David Dhavan’s upcoming
H
project. Sources close to the Bollywood director
have revealed that the film would be a presentday remake of the eighties film Chasme Badoor.
Right from the word “go” Tapsee has won a
spot in people’s hearts down South. Now the
damsel is going the extra mile and dubbing in
her own voice for projects that have her name.
The Delhi-based actress, who has three Telugu
films going for her at the moment, has reportedly revealed that she would not stop acting in
South Indian films which have given her recognition. Tapsee’s next release will be in Telugu
titled Mr. Perfect where she will share screen
space with Prabhas and Kajal Agarwal.
Tapsee who left many tongues wagging
after being spotted partying with her then
co-star Manchu Manoj of Jhummandi
Naadham is getting her dictions right in
Tamil and Telugu. There are also rumours
doing the rounds that the young actress
recently turned down an offer of Puri
Jagannath titled Bbuddah... which sees
Big B in the lead. But we do not have any
confirmation regarding this.

Jackson committed suicide over finances?
ThandieNewtonreteamswithTylerPerry
LAWYERS of Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson’s doctor, have
revealed that Jackson might have committed suicide over his
financial woes. Defence lawyer Ed Chernoff said his client, who is
charged with involuntary manslaughter, was not responsible for the
pop superstar’s death in 2009. “The crux of the defence is going
to be that Jackson engaged in a desperate act and took desperate
measures that caused his death. We believe at the time Jackson
died he was a desperate man in relation to his financial affairs,”
Chernoff told Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor. However, Deputy
District Attorney David Walgren has opposed the claims, saying the
defence is simply staging “an irrelevant sideshow” aimed at distracting the jury from the key issue of the trial.

THANDIE Newton is set to star opposite Tyler Perry in
Lionsgate’s Good Deeds, which will find her reteaming with
Perry, with whom she worked in last year’s For Colored
Girls. In the romantic drama, Perry plays the title character,
Glen Deeds, who’s all set to be married to an uptown girl
when he finds himself drawn to a single mom, played by
Newton. Perry is writing, directing and starring in the project,
which is being produced by his Tyler Perry Studios as well as

Pattinson grows out of

I
T was the excited gasp heard round the
world last week, as Twihards were treated
to leaked screen shots of Robert Pattinson
and Kristen Stewart filming their passionate vampire scenes for The Twilight Saga:
Breaking Dawn Part 1 - and R-Pattz himself has
admitted the scene will be powerfully seductive.
“It’s kind of incredible,” Robert told MTV in a
recent interview of the sparkly skin-on-skin
romp. “I saw a prelim of it. [Director Bill
Condon] has really, really good ideas for it.”
Filming the love scene required creativity
from the Twilight team, as the highly anticipated encounter must satisfy the audience’s preconceived expectations (from Stephenie Meyer’s
book), yet stay non-descript enough to maintain
a PG-13 rating.
“We had some really interesting ideas about
it,” Robert said. “It’s kind of interesting, as well,
having to do it in the context of PG-13.
“You can’t do blatant,” he added, laughing.
“That’s all been done in other stuff anyway, like
saying, ‘You just do it really, really fast!’”
In related news, the 24-year-old Brit — who
told MTV earlier this year that his upcoming
drama, Bel Ami, would feature a lot of his
“crack” — will apparently be showing a bit more
than just his bare backside, according to his Bel
Ami co-star, Natalia Tena.
“There is a lot of everything in that,” Natalia
told MTV of R-Pattz’s body at the
DVD release party of Harry
Natalie
Portman
Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1
on Monday. “But the thing is, I knew
him before all the Twilight stuff.
We used to hang out for a bit, so
it was a bit weird [during
filming]. I was like, ‘All
right, mate, come on,
let’s do it! It will be
fun!’”
Despite
the
“weirdness,”
Tena — whom
fans
recognise
from her role as
Nymphadora Tonks
in the Harry Potter
franchise — says fans
should expect to see a
whole new depth to Robert’s
acting in the upcoming film,
which also co-stars Uma
Thurman and Christina Ricci.
“[Robert] is not nice at all in this
[film],” she said. “Which is great,
because he’s going to break away
from that [teen heartthrob] thing
and show that he can play those
roles, which is so important as an
actor to not stay on that same
path.”
The Twlight Saga: Breaking
Dawn - Part 1 is slated for theatrical release on November 18, 2011,
while a release date for Bel Ami has
yet to be set.

for her baby
AP
S the due date of her first child
creeps closer, actress Natalie
Portman is still feeling good —
with the exception of a few minor
aches and pains.
“My back is not feeling great right now,
sitting for so long,” she said at the Your
Highness junket in New York City on
Wednesday. “But everything’s really great
otherwise.”
Sometime this summer, the glowing
first-time mom is expecting the arrival of
her child with fiancé Benjamin Millepied
— her Black Swan co-star and choreographer - and she says that she’s in no rush
to get things ready for her impending
bundle of joy
“I think it’s a Jewish thing to be kind of
superstitious,” she adds. “You don’t do
any of the baby stuff before the baby
arrives.”
A
In addition to taking on the role of
warrior princess Isabel in Your Highness,
alongside Danny McBride and James
Franco, Natalie also recently wrapped
filming on the highly anticipated Marvel
Comics Norse god film, Thor.
The comic book movie lands in theatres on May 6, and the glowing mommyto-be gave her newcomer co-star, Chris
Hemsworth, rave reviews.
“Chris is so, so talented. It’s really sort
of a birth-of-a-star moment,” Natalie
raved, of the up-and-coming Aussie actor.
“You watch [Thor] and you’re like, ‘Wow,
this guy is a superhero.’
“[Thor] is just really this epic family
drama with a lot of fun in it too,” Natalie
added. “Ken Branagh directed it, and he
really keeps this classic dramatic structure
while at the same time, having the fun
sort of comic book elements preserved.”
Your Highness, which also stars
Michael Clarke Duncan and Zooey
Deschanel, hits theatres yesterday.
