TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
ANTOSH Sivan’s mega project
Urumi, marking Prithviraj’s debut
as a producer, is in the process of
becoming a landmark film in
Malayalam.
Urumi unfolds on a huge canvas that fords
time,space,factandfiction.IfAnanthabhadram,
his first feature film in Malayalam, blurred myth
and reality, the tri-lingual Urumi in Malayalam,
Tamil and English, promises to be an extravaganza that Malayalam cinema has seldom seen on
screen. The movie goes back in time to
recount a story that takes place after the
Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama set
foot in Kozhikode in 1498.
Scripted
by
Shankar
Ramakrishnan, the director of
Island Express in the portmanteau film Kerala Café, the story
of Urumi is set in the period
between 1502 and 1524, especially around events that take
place on Gama’s last trip to
India. His unspeakable cruelty towards Indians and
hisunreasonabledemands
create a band of warriors
who thirst for revenge.

Good girl Genelia
Salman acts Dheela in Ready
GENELIA D’Souza isn’t so childish when it comes to real life. The
actress, who is popular for such roles in most of her films, is so religious and also advocates for the cause of vegetarianism. March 9
was Ash Wednesday, one of the holy days of Christians and Genelia
promptly visited the Church. “Just back from church, today being Ash
Wednesday, marks the beginning of Lent,” she said. Equally popular
in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada film industries, the chirpy
actress further said, “For forty days, no non-vegetarian food. Today is
a day of fast. Let’s hope I can keep it.” Only recently, Genelia hosted
a rock concert organised as part of International Women’s Day in
Mumbai. “The strength of a woman is so high. It can do magic and
change things to a great extent,” she said.
STAR Salman Khan, shot for a funnily titled song
Dheela character for his film Ready in Bangkok. The
song is aimed at describing his character in the comedy
film, being directed by Anees Bazmee. Replete with
amusing lyrics and Salman’s typical dance moves, the
song was shot with 100 dancers who were especially
flown from Mumbai to Bangkok, said a source. “Shot a
song called Mein karoon toh saala character dheela
hai. Hehehe (sic),” Salman posted on Twitter after
shooting the song last week. Two choreographers - Raju
Khan and Mudassar Khan - have worked together on
the song to give it a truly Bollywood feel.

I’m not the best dancer, just a
good learner: Meiyang Chang
IANS
E should have been behind a
dentist’s chair, but fate put
Chinese-Indian Meiyang
Chang in front of an audience instead. The trained
dentist who went on to be singer, actor
and is now the newly crowned winner of
Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 4 says candidly that
he’s a good student rather than a natural
talent. “I think my hard work and dedication has somehow appealed to the
audience. I wouldn’t say I’m the best
dancer of the world. I would rather say
I’m a good student and I love to learn,”
Chang, perhaps the first Chinese-Indian
in mainstream showbiz, said in an interview.
Chang, 28, was trained by choreographer Marischa Fernandez for the competition. Along with the cup, the ChangMarischa team was awarded Rs 50 lakh both took home Rs 25 lakh each.
Chang, 28, is firmly Indian though his
roots are in China.
“My forefathers were from China, but
the last few generations are born and
brought up in India. We are all Indians.
Why they came, I don’t know but what
my grandmother tells me is that they
actually trekked the mountains, passed
through jungles, survived the attacks of
cannibals and reached India,” said
Chang.
Chang, whose family has moved all
over India, would have become a practicing dentist like his father but his sister
recognised his singing talent and persuaded him to try his luck in the singing
reality show Indian Idol 3.
“I was determined to be a dentist and
was going abroad to pursue my studies. I
have a sister in Kolkata who said I should
go for the audition of Indian Idol. I went
and since then my life has changed completely.
“I am very, very happy,” Chang, who
tried his luck in movies with Badmaash
Company, said.
“Dentistry is a sort of family business;
moving away from that lucrative business and trying something else from the
level of a struggler is a very big thing. I

can sing in any situation, but for dancing, you need that space, mood and a lot
more hard work. In singing, you can
escape mild mistakes but not in dancing,” said Chang.
“In the long run, I would love to pursue
a career in singing and acting. Dancing I
have to learn more because I am a bit
lazy, but I will just keep doing it.”
No immediate film plans, however.
“No films in the pipeline as of now. I
got a few offers but somewhere they fell
through because the script wasn’t good
enough; or the script was very good but
there was no backing. So I am still looking forward to a good acting project.”
Next on his list is another television
show, but Chang is tight-lipped about it.
“I will return to my live shows that I
had to give up during Jhalak... Talks are
on about another TV show. Let’s see
what happens.”
He says categorically, however, that
he would not be judging any show.
“No way am I going to be a
judge. I believe you need a lot of
hard work to be a judge coupled
with experience,” said Chang.

am glad that my parents have supported
me in this,” he added.
After the Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa triumph,
he has proved himself as a complete
package - singer, actor and now a dancer.
Does he think it would help him in getting more work in the industry?
“I really don’t know. There are millions
of people who are complete packages
and are hoping to get a break in the
industry. I was really lucky that I have
got so much. I believe that you needn’t
be a complete package. If you have one
thing that people like, your job is done.
When I came here, I was a pretty imperfect package in terms of what I could and
could not do,” said Chang.
Asked to choose between singing and
dancing, he says he prefers going behind
the mike.
“I won’t choose between the two. I
would say dancing needs more hard
work. The best part of singing is that you

Witherspoon campaigns against

JULIANNE Moore will play former Alaska governor Sarah
Palin in Game Change, an HBO movie about John
McCain’s unsuccessful presidential campaign. Based on
the bestselling book of the same name by John
Heilemann and Mark Halperin, the film will centre on
McCain’s selection of Palin as his running mate and their
defeat in the 2008 election by Barack Obama. Jay Roach
will direct from a script by Danny Strong. They previously
worked together on HBO’s 2008 political movie Recount,
which followed the nail-biting conclusion to the 2000
presidential race.
ACTRESS Reese Witherspoon has joined a campaign to stop
violence against women. The 34-year-old star is lending support to cosmetic firm Avon’s new empowerment charm
bracelet, which is being sold for $ 8 in Britain to raise funds
for domestic violence charities Refuge, Women’s Aid and
Unifem, reports contactmusic.com. “Although the problem
may seem insurmountable, there are ways for women and
men everywhere to help bring an end to violence against
women across the globe,” said Witherspoon.

As it turns out, Kristen, who
plays Twilight Saga heroine Bella

a significant role in choosing
Robert for the role because
Catherine wanted to ensure that
the chemistry was real.

of having to fake it, or create it, or

added.
After auditioning with the final
four candidates for Edward,
Kristen had already picked out
who she wanted as her co-star.
“I brought the four guys that I
thought were the best and she had
to make out with them or do four
different scenes with them and at
the end of those two days she
said, ‘It’s gotta be Rob’” Catherine
said.
Their chemistry transcended
the set and Catherine confirmed
that she had to warn Rob about
dating Kristen because she was
only 17 at the time.
“I don’t now what the laws were
in England and so I just wanted to
be sure he knew that we did have
a law here,” she revealed.
Kristen and Robert are currently filming the final installment of
The Twilight Saga, Breaking
Dawn, which will be released as
two separate films with the first
installment hitting theatres on
November 18, 2011, and the second part on November 16, 2012.
ONSIDER me among the countless fans happy to
hear the recent news that an Expendables sequel is
definitely in the works. Surprisingly, the follow-up
to 2010’s retro action flick won’t be helmed by Sylvester
Stallone. At least not from the director’s chair. Stallone
was behind the cameras during the making of the original,
not only directing but also co-writing the screenplay. This
time around, the veteran Hollywood star is looking for
another director to take his place.
Stallone fuelled buzz about a sequel before the 2010 box
office hit was even in theatres last year. Just months prior
to the film’s August release, Stallone said that he was
abandoning another installment in the Rambo franchise,
shifting focus to the next
Expendables movie instead.
Having seen 2008’s Rambo
(aka Rambo IV), I think the
film’s ending was a satisfying curtain call for the character.
With The Expendables
quickly turning into a burgeoning new action franchise, I’m not sorry to see
Stallone’s old characters like
John Rambo and Rocky
Balboa shelved. Stallone’s
role as merc Barney Ross
undoubtedly recalls memories of action heroes from
decades past, but the nostalgia was really the whole
point of The Expendables.
For a child of the ‘80s like
me, there was something
refreshing about seeing an ode to those kinds of characters, which is exactly what Expendables was.
Luckily, we’ll see Barney Ross back in trigger-happy
action when the Expendables sequel hits theatres. The
bigger question is which other big names will headline the
actioner. No less than Charlie Sheen was rumoured last
year to be up for a role, though I wouldn’t exactly bet on it
after recent events. More bankable stars are Stallone’s
personal friends Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger,
who will hopefully get expanded roles.
As far as the film’s director, Stallone will reportedly have
a hand in picking just who his replacement will be.
Stallone is meeting with potential directors for the sequel,
and there’s no lack of talented action vets to choose from.
I’d personally go for John Woo, master of Hong Kong
shoot-outs, if he isn’t already attached to another project.
Aside from Woo, who else would be a worthy replacement
for Stallone as director?
