PAGE 4 WINTER 2015 Turn Up the Heat Give them the warmth they want and build a better business. Where would Aussie families be without their trusty hot water system? They’d be bloody cold, of course, particularly on these chilly winter mornings! Hot water systems are not generally a hot topic for discussion at parties, on first dates or even at any dinner table for that matter, unless someone has run out of hot water mid shower. Then everyone takes an interest. In fact, you can bet your bottom dollar, if you were the one to install the ‘said’ hot water system, you will be the one being cursed at this point. Not because it was a sh!t system, but because it was the wrong system for the customer. Continued over page WINTER 2015 PAGE 5 From previous page This is why it’s so important that we, as plumbers, have a proper chat with our customers when the time comes to install a new or replacement system. It means we can avoid being cursed by them when the system we install isn’t good enough. You see, every customer likes something warm to wake up to in the morning (frankly, every plumber does too!). So, as their trusty plumber, it’s our job to make sure they get the best and most practical hot water system for their everyday life. To do this we need to ask questions. The customer may just want a plain old swap over, and it could be the best option for them. That’s okay if it is – but, if you don’t have a chat and ask some questions, you and your customer will never know if there’s a better option out there. Questions you should ask include: when was the last system installed, how many people live in the house, and are any of It pays to ask a few questions before you recommend a hot water system to your customers. those people teenagers? The last bit is particularly important because, let’s be honest, we all know how long a teenager takes to shower. Also ask: do they have a double shower, or are they interested in cost cutting or a more environmentally friendly system? These are all really easy questions to ask. They also make it really easy for you to recommend the right system for them. Once you have this info, you can decide on whether an electric storage, gas storage or continuous flow water heater would be their best bet, or maybe even a solar hot water system or a hot water heat pump. Then you can put forward your recommendation, plain and simple, and leave the decision to them. The good news is, by taking an extra five minutes to talk to your customer and giving them the good oil on hot water systems, you have built a trusted relationship. This could mean, next time something backs up around their house, you will be the first plumber they think to call. Or, when they catch up with mates at a weekend BBQ and they hear someone moaning about their own plumbing problems, they’ll give their mate your number. So, clearly, it pays to have that chat. It’s likely you’ll not only get repeat business but referrals to friends and your business will grow. You’re also likely to land yourself that little bit of extra cash to splash; it’s a win-win really. Frozen Solid and Unable to Perform? You know that feeling when you’re lying in bed on a cold winter’s morning unable to move because it’s so freaking cold? When that feeling hits you, spare a thought for all the water pipes out there, frozen and unable to perform their daily duties. Depending on the severity of the weather, there are a couple of things that can happen. The pipes may be able to thaw out and refreeze daily with no issue (apart from no morning shower). But, this isn’t always the case. The bad news is, frozen pipes often lead to burst pipes. The good news is, there are some steps you can take as a plumber that may help you and your customers. Prepare your customers before they end up with a burst pipe this winter. Ideally, you should try and get to the plumbing system before the cold weather hits and seal up any air leaks. This will stop the icy cold wind from reaching the water pipes in the first place. It’s also important to wrap up or insulate any pipes that are exposed to the elements. This will hopefully prevent them from freezing up. In this case it’s true what they say, prevention is the best cure. This is where the stop-valve comes in handy. Know where it is and turn off the water before the pipes start to thaw – this will help to avoid the dreaded burst pipe scenario. But what if you are too late and the pipes are already frozen or you can’t insulate some of the pipes due to their location? PAGE 6 WINTER 2015 As a plumber, we’re sure you already know this, but it’s important to let your customers know so they can prepare. Or, if they’re calling you after their pipes have burst, let them know about the stop-valve for next time. Who knows, they may have more work for you in future just because you solved their problem and they now rank you as a top bloke. Find the Right System for the Job! Next time a customer asks you to find them the perfect hot water system, don’t just replace the system ‘like for like’, consider all the options. Electric storage water heaters are an easy solution and Tradelink stock a range of sizes to suit most customers’ needs. They’re a relatively cheap system to install and run. Does the house have a gas connection? Gas storage water heaters can be more cost effective in the long term. So, if they’ve got gas, recommend a gas storage water heater and save them some cash. Continuous flow water heaters are another practical option for customers connected to gas. These systems are compact and wall mounted, making them great space savers, and they’re good for the environment. A plus for your eco-conscious (aka tree hugging) customers! Tradelink even stock continuous flow water heaters that let you control the water temperature remotely with the press of a button, offering added safety and peace of mind, particularly for families with small children or elderly relatives. Solar hot water systems are another capable and enviro-friendly option. Evacuated solar systems use tube technology to capture more energy from the sun. This energy turns cold water that enters the tubes into hot water and stores it for later. They’re lightweight, easy to install and need very little maintenance. trust, from the best brands in hot water – brands like Rheem, Rinnai, Vulcan, Aquamax, Apricus and Bosch, just to name a few. Drop into a Tradelink or Northern’s Plumbing Supplies branch and ask one of our experts – they’ll get you sorted. And, the good news is you don’t have to install a complete system up front. You can simply replace an existing electric storage unit with a solar ready tank and add the evacuated tubes later! Or, why not consider a hot water heat pump? Heat pumps take heat from the ambient air to heat water – they don’t need sunshine or large roof panels. They efficiently produce hot water day or night, rain, hail or shine. WINTER 2015 PAGE 7 New Rheem Electric Makes a REAL Difference Rheem's new-look electric systems deliver reliability, superior enamel, a large anode and are locally made, not to mention a 10-year cylinder warranty. After more than a year in the making and a whole lot of research and development, the new-look Rheem electric hot water systems are now available. The Rheem 491/492 series 250, 315 and 400 litre models have a range of features which extend their life, and are now backed by a 10-year cylinder warranty – the longest electric water heater warranty on the Australian market. Rheem call this the REAL difference – and for good reason. REAL captures the new and enhanced features of these products: Rheem reliability A re-profiled cylinder dome top results in an even stronger, more robust design. This structural change ensures the water heater can withstand the rigours of daily use for at least 10 years. Enamel specification The new range features a commercial grade, proprietary blend Class Y enamel. It’s less soluble and more resistant to high temperatures, meaning it will last longer and prolong the life of the water heater. Larger anode The diameter of the standard black anode has been increased from 21mm to 27mm. Don’t forget, Rheem’s new models qualify for a $100 cashback as part of the 2015 Plumber Cashback Promotion. Conditions apply. PAGE 8 WINTER 2015 This provides physically more material to help protect and prolong the life of the cylinder. Anodes are now located into an anode support, which prevents the anode from swinging in the tank and potentially causing damage during transport and installation. Locally made Rheem’s 250, 315 and 400 litre electric water heaters are made right here in Australia, at Rheem’s Rydalmere manufacturing facility in New South Wales. And these products are built on the knowledge gained from 75 years of manufacturing in Australia. The systems also look better! RHM0191_267x180_AUST_Plumbing.indd 1 INSTALL A ® AUSTRALIA’S NO.1 20/05/2015 11:28 am Introducing the New Bosch 4000S and Compress 3000 Bosch 4000S The 4000S is the newest addition to Bosch’s gas-powered continuous flow range. Featuring three internal room-sealed appliances in 12, 16 and 20 litre capacities, the new range is ideal for the rapidly growing medium and high-density building sectors. The 4000S range also includes an external 12-litre model with the same plumbing connections as the Bosch Pilot and Hydropower continuous flow water heaters, making it a great replacement when changing to an electric ignition model. All models are available in natural and LP gas, with 50°C temperature locked models also available. The internal appliances have a built-in temperature controller. An additional main (kitchen) controller can be purchased separately and attached to the internal or external models. The controllers allow home owners to easy preset the temperature and also serve as a diagnostic tool for you, their plumber. All 4000S systems have the patented Bosch OptiFlow system fitted as standard. OptiFlow adjusts the fan speed during PAGE 10 WINTER 2015 operation to ensure best performance – this means that you don’t need to adjust the fan speed when installing. Plus, any change in airflow (such as a partial blockage of the flue) can be offset automatically by the OptiFlow system. Bosch Compress 3000 The Compress 3000 operates from just -7°C up to +40°C – giving home owners efficient hot water, no matter where they are in Australia. The system also runs quietly (50dB at 1m) and features a bunch of ‘Smart Control’ functions: Heat up timer function to program heating times to take advantage of cheaper overnight power prices or PV solar generation. One-time super boost to manually activate a one off ‘fast recovery’ heat up. PLUS mode delivers faster recovery in colder climates. Holiday mode switches off the appliance while the home owner is on holiday, then heats up the tank the day before they arrive home. Noise reduction mode to set times when heat pump will run at a lower power with less noise. The Bosch Compress 3000 will make your life easier too. The system has been designed to make servicing easy with error codes for diagnostics, accessible and easy-to-replace components, and a heat pump module that can be quickly removed and replaced in one piece. The Compress 3000 also has a ‘service mode’ which can be activated to provide hot water until a service technician can arrive. Plus, the complete heat pump can also be transported horizontally, making it easier to move on flatbeds and in vans. Keep Hot Water Hot With Thermal Balancing Valves RMC's new Thermal Balancing Valves keep your hot water temperature in balance. The new Thermal Balancing Valves by RMC are thermostatic circuit control valves, which automatically control the temperature within a circulating hot water system to ensure a balanced water temperature throughout. Ideal for multi-storey installations, the Thermal Balancing Valve is fitted on the return line of a circulating system, and may be installed to serve one or multiple outlets, to maintain a constant temperature. The RMC Thermal Balancing Valve is preset at 58°C, and may be easily adjusted from 40°C and 65°C to suit installation requirements. A temperature gauge is supplied to help set and monitor the temperature, and insulation helps prevent heat loss for an efficient system. Press-fit connection systems have gained huge popularity worldwide in the last two decades, but while press-fit ball valves have been available for some time in Europe and the US, Aussie plumbers have been limited to using press-fit connectors with standard threaded ball valves. That’s about to change with Zetco’s new range of press-fit ball valves in sizes 15mm to 50mm, specifically designed for Australian copper tube sizes. The press-fit connections are built into the valve, which means you can now enjoy the benefits of faster, flame-free installation and fewer joints. Millions of Aussies rely solely on rainwater as their only source of water, and millions more harvest rainwater for other reasons – from a desire to be more self-sufficient or reducing their water bill, to environmental reasons or as part of a water sensitive urban design. Regardless of how rainwater is used – for drinking, irrigation, livestock or other uses around the home – the two key goals of a rainwater system are quality and quantity. Home and business owners need their rainwater system to supply water of a PAGE 20 WINTER 2015 suitable quality and to provide a sufficient amount of water (yield) to suit their needs. So, how do you create a rain harvesting system that’s fit for the job, in terms of water quality and quantity, that’s easy to operate and looks good? When it comes to designing a rainwater harvesting system for your clients, consider the complete system, rather than the individual components or devices. A good place to start is with Rain Harvesting’s 12 steps to building a complete rainwater system. The simple steps will help you choose a complete system for your clients. The Reno Bandwagon: How to Get Onboard Don’t miss the reno bandwagon – jump onboard and get a slice of the action. If you’re interested in watching reno shows, I’m sure you’ve noticed there are plenty to choose from on the telly at the moment. The trouble is, there’s not much else! Anyway, the good news is, this means that people are interested in renovating and improving their property and that means they are interested in you, their humble plumber. There are loads of reasons why people want a better house. It might be so they can show off to their mates or add value to a future Is Your Business Financially Fit? Start the new financial year off on the right foot by giving it a business health check. sale, and some just want to feel like the king of their domain. If you look back 30-odd years or so, you would find that people were more likely to just make do with the house they had. But, for the average Joe, this is no longer the case – the sky is now the limit. So, how do you get a slice of the action? It’s simple: get yourself out there, do a great job and don’t be afraid of becoming mates with your customers. Word-of-mouth has always been the best form of advertising. When it comes to people buying property, they can often see past the bad paint job and the dodgy cabinets but they want good solid bones. They want a good roof, foundations, and top-notch electrical and plumbing services. If the house doesn’t have them, you want to be the one they call to get With the end of another financial year, now’s a good time to take stock of the past year, think about what you set out to achieve, and give your business a health check. Here’s how… 1 Review your business plan Reviewing your business plan is a great place to start when looking at the fitness of your business. Was your 100m quicker or slower? Did you reach your expected financial figures? It can also help you find areas for improvement and give you a ‘heads up’ if you’re veering off course. Because, you don’t want to be jumping hurdles in the 100m sprint. PAGE 24 WINTER 2015 it up to scratch. On the flip side, if the house does have great plumbing, you want to be the one that did it. It’s a good time for your name to go up in lights, so to speak. We also need to go the extra mile when working with customers and, instead of just installing new pipes, bathware or kitchenware, have a chinwag with them and make some suggestions. They want to know where you think the services should be, what type of taps or toilets they should install, and so on. After all, you are the one ‘in the know’ when it comes to these things and the customer will respect you for speaking up. Don’t miss out, jump on the reno bandwagon, there’s enough work for all of us. 2 Apply for a business award Winning a business award, just like winning a race, is a great way to showcase your success and get recognition for your hard work and dedication. Even if you don’t win the race, training for it will improve your fitness and better prepare you for future success. Similarly, applying for an award helps you look at your business strategically, reflect on challenges and successes, and identify areas for improvement. 3 Test your business fitness If you don’t have a business plan, it’s not too late. Start one today. You now have two ways to check the fitness of your business – reviewing your training regime and running the race. Visit www.asbc.gov.au/my-business/ entering/planning-tools to download a business plan template and guide. Get the new financial year off to a running start by reviewing your business plan and back it up by applying for business awards. ICE SMALL BUSINESS ADV Hey, Big Spender How to spend your $20,000 tax break wisely. No matter what you think about the federal government, one thing was clear on Budget night, they want to help out small business in a big way, and who’s going to say no to $20,000 worth of immediate tax deductions. Not you, right? Think of all the things you could buy: 4WD gear, fishing equipment, a flat screen TV, yeah-yeah I know, dream on! But seriously, it really will be a big help for many of us, and the help doesn’t stop there. You won’t only get the cash, but the company tax rate is also being cut to a 50-year low of 28.5%. So, back to the question, what should you spend it on? Tools and equipment, of course, after all our tools are what make us plumbers. Without them we would just have our hands and that’s not something you or I want to think about. Now is the time to buy the expensive stuff you’ve been putting off, or to replace those worn out tools that probably make the job harder than it should be. You can bet that upgrading your equipment and tools will make your business more efficient. How, you ask? You will be able to do jobs faster and maybe even to a higher standard. It might even lead to new jobs you couldn’t previously take on because you didn’t have all the right tools. And, all of this means you might even have time to have smoko or knock off early now and again. So, next time you’re on the john have a think about it and make sure you spend that money many times in your head before you come to a decision, just to make sure it’s the right decision. After all, it’s an investment in your business and your future. Tradies were the big winners in this year’s Federal Budget! The government’s jobs and small business package gives you immediate tax deductions on machinery or equipment (like tools) costing less than $20,000. It means that when you buy assets for your business valued at less than $20,000 you can claim the full amount on your income to reduce your tax bill. These arrangements continue until the end of June 2017. If you’re a registered business (i.e. you’ve got an ABN) and you turn over less than $2 million, you’re eligible. And, there’s no limit on the number of items you can claim! Visit budget.gov.au for more info. WINTER 2015 PAGE 25 Work Safe Tips First, identify any hazards. A hazard is a situation that has the potential to cause harm. How not to get into ‘hot water’ with your safety regulator. 2 A site inspection by the safety regulator can be stressful at the best of times. Here’s a few tips from our workplace health and safety expert to help you manage the safety of your site, and make sure you don’t end up in hot water at your next safety inspection. Your local Work Safe Authority will have online tools that you can download to help you manage safety on your construction site. Visit safeworkaustralia.gov.au to find the regulator in your state or territory. 3 Once you’ve identified the hazards, you’ll need to put controls in place to manage risks. A risk is the harm that could occur when exposed to a hazard. This may include injury, illness or even death, but also damage to plant, equipment and the environment. Now that you have identified all the hazards and risks, make sure that everyone who visits your worksite knows about the hazards and risks and the controls you’ve put in place. Get Yourself into a Tight Spot With Viega Ring Jaw Sets Innovation is at the core of Viega, the world leader in pressing technology, and their ring jaw sets, designed for Viega’s press fitting tools, are no exception. Developed in response to customer feedback and ongoing R&D, Viega’s ring jaw sets give you greater flexibility to get into tight spots. The ring jaw sets are designed for pressing DN15-DN32 for use with the Picco tool, and DN15-DN50 for use with the Pressgun 4B or Pressgun 5. Individual ring jaws can be placed around fittings that are very close to surfaces and other obstacles, and then pressed using a clamping jaw fitted to the pressing tool. The combination of a 360° positionable ring jaw, a 180° rotatable tool head and the 180° tool pivoting range during pressing makes virtually any tight spot reachable. If you’re used to installing pipes in supply ducts or in floor and ceiling openings on PAGE 26 WINTER 2015 building sites, you’ll know too well that space can be limited. Viega’s hinged press jaw with press rings for the Viega Propress range is ideal in these situations, where even compact pressing tools breach their limits. The rings jaws are available in cased sets; clamping jaws are sold separately, which will save you the extra cost if you’ve already got the Pressgun 4B (which comes with a clamping jaw for DN40-DN100 ring jaws); and ring jaw carry cases have moulded storage for the clamping jaws to suit Picco and Pressgun 4B/ 5 tools.
