introduction
Well, another year has passed – and it was an eventful one for Lubeznik Center for
the Arts!
In May 2014 we lost Executive Director Carolyn Saxton, who pursued an opportunity that
took her back to the community fund world she was in before her work with LCA.
Throughout the year there were compelling exhibits on display for all to enjoy, fun First
Friday events and excellent educational programs that benefit area school children. We
hosted 5,600 children through after school programs, tours, classes and workshops.
For the first time, we held our ArtBash annual fundraising dinner at LCA. This move gave
our guests the opportunity to get a firsthand look at what we offer the community. There
were performance artists located throughout LCA to entertain guests and our emcee was
Chicago news anchor Ron Magers, who did an incredible job.
Rachel Saxon
President,
LCA Board of Directors
The Lakefront Art Festival was a success again this year. This festival is organized by LCA’s staff and a
dedicated committee of volunteers. I hope you were able to attend to enjoy the event and support
the artists.
As the year came to a close, two wonderful things happened. First, we had a very
successful Holiday Artisan Market with gift items from the Gallery Shop. A preview sale
gave our members the opportunity to get a first look at all that was available.
The second wonderful thing that happened was that on December 15, 2014 Erika Hanner
joined LCA as our new Executive Director. Erika came to us after spending the prior 20
years at the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Arts (MCA). One of the last projects Erika
worked on at the MCA was the David Bowie Is exhibit, which is an example of her high
caliber. We are excited to have Erika at LCA and look forward to growing with her in the
years to come.
Be sure to visit us soon to enjoy the arts!

ArtMakers are individuals and companies who financially support LCA at
$500 or above. Gifts at this level allow LCA to make an even more powerful
impact. ArtMakers are part of a premier giving circle and have exclusive
benefits including invitations to behind-the-scenes social and cultural
events with an enthusiastic and like-minded community; inclusion on the
ArtMakers donor wall; and recognition in the Annual Report.
ArtMakers receive VIP passes to two major art events in Chicago:
EXPO CHICAGO in September featuring exclusive events around Chicago
ArtMakers Sue & Nick Bridge
including collection tours, exhibition openings, curator-led tours, and
studio visits, and SOFA CHICAGO
(a Sculptural Objects Functional Art + Design Fair) in November where
over 70 galleries from around the world exhibit.

ArtBash
For the first time LCA hosted our premier fundraising
event on-site where attendees enjoyed exhibitions,
an auction, savory fare, and creative performances
throughout the evening. $105,000 was raised at
ArtBash 2014, which provided support for LCA
programs and exhibitions. LCA presented the
inaugural Arts Leadership award to Don Babcock of
NIPSCO and ABC 7’s Ron Magers made remarks and
added a surprise element to the live auction. Thanks
to Co-Chairs Sue Bridge and Rick Soria and the
ArtBash committee for making the event such a
great success!

exhibitions
Detail of Variations Within a Species by Valerie Mann
Donations from corporations, foundations and individuals enable us to display nine contemporary arts
exhibitions annually. 1,500 local & regional school children participated in integrated learning tours of
LCA exhibitions with trained docents.
LCA provides diverse audiences access to, understanding of, and participation in visual and performing
arts. It is our goal through this engagement that people feel connected to the cultural sphere.
2014 exhibition highlights
Material Possessions

educational outreach
Individual support and grants enable LCA to provide experiences in art, music and dance for both children
and adults who may not otherwise have access to a creative outlet. LCA’s custom art curriculum, provided
in Safe Harbor and Boys & Girls Club after school programs, integrates academic standards and provides an
extension of the classroom to the kids who need it most. Specialized after school art instruction enhances
learning and improves graduation rates in schools.
Michigan City Area Schools after school
programs serve the most economically
disadvantaged students in Michigan City
(80% whom receive free or reduced lunch).
850 students participate in three hours a
week of visual art, dance, or music provided
by LCA. An independent evaluator (Carrie
Lee, Research Specialist, Wildflower Writing,
Elkhart, IN) determined the following results
for after school students in the 2013-14
school year: 1) Elementary participants are
doing better on tests than their classmates
and 2) Student grades are improving each
year as a result of our after school programs.
LCA also serves 350 at-risk children in
Summer art activities in youth serving camps as well as 800 economically disadvantaged children and
their families through Family Art Nights.
We know from extensive research conducted
by the National Edowment for the Arts and
others that arts experiences which start at
a young age are pivotal to creating wellrounded, critically thinking, civic-minded
adults and that, often, the arts are the very
hook that keeps a child engaged in school.
LCA Annual Report 2014

educational outreach
Family Art Nights consist of a meal and an art project provided by an LCA instructor and an assistant. It
allows families to decompress, create a work of art and spend quality time together, helping to establish
a positive family connection. In addition, 1,500 local & regional school children participate in integrated
learning tours of LCA exhibitions with trained docents.
Art opportunities are also provided for 125 adults, from
the Social and Learning Institute, Michiana Resources,
and Swanson Center, who experience developmental and
emotional challenges. These art classes, taught by professional
artist and experienced teacher Debra Sawyer, help students
improve motor skills and hand-eye coordination, increase their
self-esteem and confidence, enhance self-expression, and
build social connections. Clients receive 1.5 hours of weekly
art instruction on-site at LCA. Through extensive assessment
including direct feedback from students, families, and teachers,
LCA has determined the greatest impact we make on the client
is in their self-worth and esteem. Art is the place where their
expression is valued and they see their identity transform from being a disabled person to that of an
artist. Their families also report better moods and an increased sense of independence.
A regional elementary school teacher (right), models her project at
the LCA Art Education Resource Fair on October 11, 2014. For the
first time ever the fair was available in LaPorte County, where over
40 area educators and administrators learned about ways they
can integrate art into their curriculum. Teachers were taught three
different art projects to take back to their classrooms and offered
tools for incorporating art into the subjects they teach.
The fair was in cooperation with South Shore Arts and
made possible through funding from the Indiana
Arts Commission.

community initiatives
Robert R. Williams creates portraits at Lakefront Art Festival 2014
LCA continues to be a leading arts resource in the community, collaborating with over 35 community
organizations in order to bring cultural activities and positive change to our area. Michigan City’s
revitalization efforts are fueled by the arts and LCA plays a large role in these efforts. Several LCA staff
members participate on the Michigan City Public Art Committee, which has brought over a dozen
sculptures to the North end of Michigan City through a project called SculptFusion. LCA staff were
also the first to lobby the Redevelopment Commission to bring Artspace to Michigan City. Artspace
Uptown Artist Lofts, located in the heart of Uptown Arts District, is converting a long-vacant structure
into live/work space for 44 artists who will eat, shop, and socialize in the up-and-coming district. LCA
has continued to be a supportive partner to Artspace during the funding, construction and preparations
during 2014. In 2016, Artspace will open its doors, boosting the already vibrant arts scene to a new level
and spurring economic growth.
Lubeznik Center for the Arts
Lakefront Art Festival
LCA’s major revenue source outside of ArtBash is the Lakefront Art
Festival which raised $44,500 in 2014. The annual two-day outdoor event
provided an outlet for nearly 100 fine artists and fine craftsmen from across
the nation to exhibit and sell their work. The festival also serves as an outlet
for our community partners to display and sell their artwork. The festival
provides a first-time art experience for many, allowing a lesser-engaged
audience to become more involved with LCA and other community art
initiatives. Over 4,300 visitors from northern Indiana, Chicagoland and
Southwest Michigan attended in 2014.
Artist Lawrence Cimaglio (right) poses with a whimsical glass
creation at Lakefront Art Festival 2014.
Volunteers Joan Dittman and Michael Wernik (left) take
a break from their work at the festival. The success of the
festival depends on the volunteer committee who manage the
year-long planning process, as well as the commitmment of
hundreds of individuals during the event weekend.

community initiatives
First Fridays
LCA has become a nexus for culture and social activity in
Michigan City. Annually, 2,500 community members join us for
free, culturally-focused First Friday events that feature poetry
slams, plays, music and dance. These performance-based afterhours art experiences bring in area residents of all ages. In
2006, LCA started “First Friday at Five” as a way to generate new
audiences -- and it has! Now, the Uptown Arts District hosts
the monthly art walks, drawing thousands of residents and
visitors from surrounding communities every month of the year
-- rain, sun, sleet or snow. First Friday has developed into a true
community event embraced by the city, merchants, non-profits
and residents alike.

gallery shop
One of the many benefits LCA members receive includes a discount on purchases in the Gallery Shop
where hand-made items are sold and proceeds go to support LCA programming. In October 2014, the
shop rolled out an enhanced discount benefit of 10% on all items. Previously, only non-consignment
items were eligible for discount. Additionally, the Gallery Shop saw big changes designed to positively
impact the shopping experience. The shop received a facelift that allows patrons more room to move
more freely and makes merchandise more visible.
Holiday Artisan Market
During November and December each year, the LCA lobby is transformed into the Holiday Artisan
Market. Items from the shop spill over into the lobby with items from new artists as well as year-round
favorites. In 2014, LCA exceeded sales goals and added a preview event to provide members with
exclusive treatment and top selection at the market.
