PISTON SLAP MAY 2016 PRESIDENTS PAGE MAY 2016 Greetings members and welcome to May. As our year speeds ahead many of our members enjoyed a speedy day at our Wakefield Park Supersprint held on the 1st May. Thank you to Andrew Crowley for directing the Wakefield Supersprint and to Glenn Inkster for being Secretary (as well as helping Katie Fletcher upgrade her Admin licence even though she is not a TCC member). A massive thankyou must also go to the officials who sat out on flag points all day and kept the day running as smoothly as possible. Though being down on entries compared to previous years, motorsport was definitely the winner on the day with everyone getting plenty of laps in and TCC providing yet another enjoyable no BS event. As mentioned in the previous magazine we are still looking for a few major officials for the upcoming TCC events: Ernie’s Revenge Motorkhana - 17th July (Secretary) TCC State Motorkhana Nirimba - 7th August (Director, Secretary) TCC State Khanacross Hampton - 16th October (Director, Secretary, Scrutineer) Presidents Trophy Trial - TBA (Secretary) Together with the major officials for the events above we will be looking for timing officials to assist on the day also, please let myself know if you are able to assist in one way or another. Thank you to all the members who responded to the Website survey. The survey will be up until the May meeting and we are encouraging all members to give us some feedback on the website. If you haven’t had your say yet, we would love to hear from you. Finally, but definitely not least of importance, congratulations to Dominic Connolly and Vicki Gillon on their recent engagement and also to David and Jessica Masing on tying the knot in mid April. May both couples find happiness, joy and a long life ahead together. Stay safe and see you at the meeting on Thursday the 12th of May. Matt Rath. Andrew spent a week down in Tasmania for Targa Tasmania and then on his return it was all systems go in finalising the organisation for the TCC Wakefield Supersprint. Despite the rain on the morning of the supersprint, the day turned out well and I believe everyone had an enjoyable day. With bub number 2 due in 7 weeks, things will be quietening down a little. Over the next couple of months, we will continue to do our best in producing a quality magazine but would appreciate articles at least 2 weeks before the club meeting to allow time to pick away at the magazine. Been to an event recently? Please write up and submit an article advising the club how you went and whether the event was any good. Remember you need to have submitted an article for publication as one of the conditions to be eligible for a championship trophy, so get in early! We are looking for more photos of members to include on the front of the magazine. If you have one that you would like to appear on the cover of an upcoming magazine, please email the photo to editor@thornleighcarclub.org. It is recommended to send through a high resolution landscape oriented photo. Please include a sentence about the event and date that the photo is from. I’m sure you are aware by now that the magazine is also available electronically. If you would prefer to receive your magazine by email, please let Geoff Horler or myself know so that we can update your details accordingly. Nicole Crowley TCC welcomes the following new members Nikki Baker Danny Ryke Koye Kenafake May you find lots of enjoyment in your motorsport and friends in TCC. It’s a long way to Awaba for a motorkhana but regardless of the distance Phil Coffey and I went up for round two of the State Motorkhana Championship run by Westlakes Auto Club. At round one there was a small field of 25 starters (about the same as last year) and only one from TCC, which was me. Anyway it made way for an easy day and home in time for the F1 in Melbourne, that‘s if you like open wheelers. I don’t! The weather looked extra good no rain and clear skies and not too hot. State rounds at Awaba are not drawing the entries in and again the field was small with only 25 starters. There was one class A starter Dean Cook in his Moke. So Dean Cook won the class and took 4th outright. Dean’s Moke was the most used car with four drivers in it after the East’s Special broke a drive shaft. Class B went to Emma Russel in a Charade beating Courtney O’Brien by one second in the same Charade. I don’t know who owns the car. Class C had 10 starters and the king of the class was Ben Semple in his Subaru. Ben takes his driving to the ragged edge using four wheel drive or swapping to two wheel drive by taking one of the drive shafts out depending on what test and whether its dirt or tar. There was a black Escort well driven by Steven O’Brian in 5th place and very close behind Ben. There was two class D cars, me and Alan McCulloch in his Peugeot. Allan beat me, as always, but there was a black civic that was making the right motor noises (a VTEC type sound) but it was in class C. I think a rule is required they should have won class D, must tell Westlakes! The next state round was meant to be Armidale, way up North. Phil Coffey and I had planned to go up together in the one car, my Honda. Phil was or is the CAMS Series Steward for the State Motorkhana Championship. We planned to drive up on Friday as the event was to start Saturday lunch time and finish Sunday giving you plenty of time to drive back to Sydney. Only one problem; the surface was concrete and the water truck could not keep the surface constantly wet, therefore there would not be equal conditions of the surface for every car. Someone dragged out the rule book that stated the surface had to remain the same for every car. That person must never have been to Ansell Park, but rules are rules and are there for a reason so that meant more officials for Wakefield and Phil is free to help out the Small Ford Club. In between, there was a CACA event at Ansell Park on the 23rd April. Yes on Saturday! I had decided to go and see how bad the dust was. First when I was at Awaba I broke a tooth. This tooth was one I broke at Bondi while I was on a billy cart. This was when I was 13 and the dentist said the repairs will only last a short while. Well, when I was eating an egg and bacon roll there was a sudden stop that did not sound good. The temporary repair was no more, so it was off to the dentist. The quote was from $1200 all the way up to $13600. I could go higher but I think you get the point. There was some higher prices but if you think I was going that high, you don’t know me very well. John Boston rang me and said you didn’t tell me there was an event on at Ansell Park (I had just noticed in the club mag) Yes, I’m going. John, Brody and I went out to the second HDCC motorkhana of the year. My main reason for going out was to see how much grass there was and how bad the dust was. It was bad. The second a car left a huge dust cloud appeared so getting lost was easy. Twice I found a huge dust cloud where I thought the flag was and it was right there in front of me for a second as I knocked it down dead centre. I finished some tests hoping that it was right as I had been unable to find several flags… they were out there… somewhere out there! The Honda was used by me all day and John and Brody for the last couple of runs as the 1800cc Toyota played up. Well it was a $400 Special! The event itself was good, dust aside. It was going to be a problem though some people like Jason King and the Batt’s somehow either never get lost in the dust or create no dust! Jason won the event in the bubble Mazda, a very good drive and well over 8 seconds clear of Brad Arnold in second place. It was then another 8+ seconds back to John Taylor in an Ignus in third. I don’t know who makes them but it looked like box on wheels though was very quick. Then it was John Boston in the $400 Toyota and my Honda. Then along came Gary Moore in his Pulsar. And a big surprise, also in the $400 Toyota, was Brody finishing very high in 6th. How much help is he getting from John? John is a fully trained driving instructor! A good well run event as you would expect from HDCC. When I got home there was so much dust still on the Honda. Sandra washed the Honda, now that was a first! -4- PISTON SLAP MAY 2016 The class winners were class B Jason King in the Mazda, then class C was Brad Arnold in the Dato 1600. Class D went to Dean Batt in the big Commodore. To keep you up to date, David Masing is now a member of the NSW Motorkhana Panel. Well done David! Now to other things, I went out to Ansell Park to a round of the CACA motorkhana series held on the 23rd April. CACA have been asked to run a round of the State Championship to be run at Nirimba. The events had a state round feel about them as the Hopkirk at Ansell Park is difficult with reversing and the half a ton of dirt and dust landing on your back window does not help. Tri-Angles is a test that I like a lot and usually do well. I got lost with just nowhere to go and it was next to impossible to work out. I wonder about those guys who never lift their foot! Do they have built-in radar or are they taking a big guess? I hope not! Phil Coffey, Steve Lansley and I went down to Wakefield for TCC’s yearly supersprint. The event had been running for one hour when the heavens opened up and down came the rain. It only came for about 10 minutes and then it stopped. I was told some people went home. I thought that was strange as the sun came out and stayed out. The rain caught John out on the track and he was just a wee bit damp. John had decided to run an open top MX5 he was nearly washed out of the MX5! As the track dried out, down came John’s times. John finished with a 1.09 something. There were a few very fast cars including an Evo, very fast Clubman and a Radical. The weather was kind to us we had enough wind giving the cars a push to a higher top speed. We got to see Aron Elliott’s real live Subaru with, I doubt if they are legal, blacked out windows. It looked like it was lowered and had a nice paint job. On the 7th May, LBMCCC are running a motorkhana at Ansell Park. I will go to the event and see how it’s going. On the 16th July I will be back out to Ansell Park to set up for Ernie’s Revenge Motorkhana on the th 17 July and see how the grounds are standing up to the lack of rain. Anyone know how to do a native rain dance? The next State Motorkhana event is run by Renault Car Club at Nirimba on the 22 nd May. See you at a motorkhana, Ernie. This six day tarmac rally around the best closed roads that Tasmania can provide, makes this event one of the best rallies in the world. Just imagine driving your favourite car as fast as you like on a road that you know is closed to other traffic and you are matching your driving skills against the winding road. This event runs all over Tasmania from Launceston to the north to George Town, to the east to St Helens and back, to the north west to Burnie, further west to Smithton, then south to Strahan on the west coast, back to the east to Hobart and the final day south of Hobart for a finish at the Salamanca Markets on the Hobart waterfront. To give you an idea of the distance travelled in this event I have tabled the stages. There is a saying at Targa “that the event is won in the first three days and lost in the last three.” As fatigue and wear and tear on the car mounts, mistakes and failures can result bringing your event to an end. Traditionally on the west coast it rains and has low cloud making the roads slippery and dangerous with the low visibility. One kilometre too fast into the corner can result in car damage or an off road excursion requiring a tow out by the recovery vehicles after the stage is a public road again after the Police have opened the road. For outright victory it requires lots of money to purchase the best car in the world, have the best navigator and several very experienced service crews and support vehicles. Lots of time to extensively route chart the stages and drive them many times until the crew know every bump and corner along the route. A -7- PISTON SLAP MAY 2016 service garage with a hoist and workshop at every night stop to repair the car if necessary to stay in the event. For the poorer competitors the organisers have Targa Plates that you win when you complete every stage within the specified time with allowances for dry and wet conditions. With a suitable reliable competitive car, good driving by staying on the road and good advice from the navigator to keep you within the times and a good service crew it is possible to get a Targa Plate so long as nothing goes wrong. When you get your Targa Plates three years in a row the team receives a Gold Plate and six years in a row a Platinum plate. The phrase “Proper planning and preparation prevents poor performance” is very applicable to receive a Targa Plate. John Paine had a three year plan to win a Gold Targa Plate. He asked Andrew Crowley to be his navigator and purchased a Mitsubishi Starion that was a tarmac prepared rally car from South Australia. With the help of his friend from the Bathurst Light Car Club, Mark Hammond a regular Targa competitor in his 1980 Jaguar XJS, John was advised to start by being a spectator at a Targa Tasmania and then run in the Targa High Country in Victoria to see what closed road tarmac rallying is all about. From this event John found the diff ratio had to be reduced to increase the car top speed to be competitive. Bernie Webb, professional co-driver, along with driver Steve Glenney, prepare a set of pace notes that can be purchased before the event giving the navigator all the details of the road for every stage to make the run much safer. John was advised to drive the whole event about two weeks before to check the pace notes and practice the roads as well as getting the driver / navigator combination working well. This is a 2000 km drive in a hire car around Tasmania in three days. Every stage is videoed so that the driver can review the road before the actual event. On the recce for the first year we found that one of the stages in the pace notes was reversed by the organisers and we were the first competitors to report the error to Bernie. John also changed some of the corner calls from say a three to a two (slower) as if you go off the road the ride through the bush could be quite frightening. Service and toilet spots have to be logged as the roads in Tasmania can be very narrow making safe parking places hard to find. The Police advised crews at the driver’s briefing that they did not want to receive complaints from the locals that the competitors were exposing themselves having a comfort stop in public areas. The first year we had two service vehicles and this made it easier to get to the car when some roads are closed during the event. Unless the service vehicle gets through the stage before the police close the road then your car could run out of fuel on the longer runs especially on the west coast. The second and third year we towed the trailer behind the service vehicle just in case we needed to tow the broken car to a workshop or back onto the boat. The run the first year was very good and the team received their Targa Plate. We found that afternoon service and car washing can be quite chaotic with so many cars in the limited space available so in later years we serviced away from the finish before putting the car into Parc Ferme for the night. The second year the exhaust pipe just behind the turbo charger started to crack and eventually it started a fire under the bonnet on day four and melted a lot of plastic fittings. Also fumes entered the car and affected the crew giving them headaches and speaking difficulties. With much work with temporary repairs and lots of prayers we were able to get the car to Hobart without loss of time. A ring around the Hobart area found an exhaust fitter in Kingston who was willing to have a look but you know it is Friday afternoon and he likes to leave early. Luckily he agreed to fix the exhaust pipe and so we were able to finish the last day and get the Targa Plate and Finishing Medallion. This year the fire damage under the bonnet was repaired, a new starter motor installed, a new two and half inch exhaust system fitted and the car serviced ready for competition. Andrew and John did a two day recce of the three new stages in the north west and two extra stages south of Hobart on the last day. Andrew reported that these stages would put a real sting in the tail for the event. When we arrived in Tasmania we had an appointment in Launceston, with Brad, to have the car dyno tuned to make sure the engine was giving its best output. An extra thirty kilowatts were found and John reported the car now felt like a real race car. Everything was now in place for another win and our Gold Targa Plate. -8- PISTON SLAP MAY 2016 The first four and a half days ran really well with all the stages completed in the trophy times and most stages were quicker than the last two years due to the increased power and the way the car was running faultlessly. Other competitors were having problems with broken suspension, broken transmissions, engine blow ups and crashes off the road. At the end of the Mt Arrowsmith stage near Derwent Bridge, Robert Porter and I were waiting to refuel the car and give it a safety check when we noticed that the Starion was missing from the usual running order. The green Mazda RX7 driven by Bruce Power and navigated by Ray Baker stopped to tell us that the Starion had not crashed and was one kilometre into the stage stopped on the side of the road and Andrew gave him the thumbs down meaning they were out. All we could do was to go to the finish and wait for the stage to be opened to recover the car. Luckily we had the trailer with us. While we waited a number of the Porsche Tour cars came in complaining of out of balance tyres or possible flat tyres. It turned out to be melted rubber stuck to the tyres and pieces of rubber coating the inside of the mud guards. It was possible to pull it off and roll it into tennis sized balls. Some competitors must have worn out their tyres in these morning stages. Eventually the Police motorcyclist opened the road and the Starion arrived on the back of the breakdown car transporter with Rod McCray and Geoff Briffa red 911 Porsche that had also died during the stage from a faulty coil. Behind came the Courtesy Bus with John, Andrew and the other crews who were filled with disappointment of being out of the rally due to crashes or mechanical problems. At Derwent Bridge the Starion was loaded onto the trailer and John told us the car was going really well when it suddenly lost all power and he took the safest action to shut down the engine before more damage was done. “Fxxx we’re out, that’s our rally” was John’s expression on the video on the replay. No Gold Targa Plate as this was the end to the three year Targa assault. This event is very expensive to run and the budget has now been spent. At the ferry wharf at Devonport on the Sunday night there were a number of very sad looking crashed cars on trailers including Andrew and Belinda Collier’s 1985 Renault RS Turbo 2 damaged on the last day. Targa Tasmania can be so great and also so disappointing. That’s motor racing. Thanks to all the people in Tasmania who run and support this great event. -9- PISTON SLAP MAY 2016 Non-Pointscore Events - 10 - PISTON SLAP MAY 2016 1996 FORD FALCON EF11 GLi AUTO SEDAN. Firstly, we need members who are still ‘Trainees’ to become ‘General Officials.’ This means less paperwork for the Event Secretary. Once you have done your one day as a Trainee a form will be sent to the CAMS office. You will then be sent a link to an online Introductory module. Once you pass the module (generally only takes 20 minutes to complete) you will be given an Officials Licence Book, similar to your CAMS Competition Licence Book. Whenever you officiate, this book then gets signed by a member of the organising committee for that event. This log of events can then be used when upgrading your licence to a Bronze level. It is of note that Bronze level official licences never expire. TCC is really in need of the following Bronze level officials. For members a little worried about learning and performing these roles, please be assured that we have many members in the club who are happy to mentor you through this process. Help is never far away. Some roles will require you to be actively involved in the organisation of the event so leaving this to the last minute will not benefit yourself with any potential assessments. TCC has plenty of events that you can help run and upgrade your licence, so please have a good think about it and speak to Dave Masing (TCC Officials Registrar) in order to start the process.
