Generously supported in part by the Office of the Provost. Cosponsored by BAND Gary Nuñez founder, bass player, director Luisga Nuñez percussion, vocals Kalie Villanueva singer Victor Velez singer, percussion Rafi Falu requinto hand drum, percussion Emanuel Santana singer, percussion Juan Rivera piano Marcos Lopez timbales Rafy Torres trombone Etienne Rivera congas Randy Roman trombone ABOUT THE ARTISTS Captivating and moving audiences over the course of a 20 year, 14 album career, this fine-tuned Puerto Ricanbased ensemble of virtuoso musicians has only gotten better with age, as evidenced by their four recent Grammy nominations and world-wide touring schedule. Plena Libre infuses its contemporary Caribbean compositions with a deep sense of the unique indigenous musical traditions, known as plena and bomba, which developed on the island over a century ago. Unlike salsa bands, which usually only have two singers, Plena Libre features five vocalists singing in lush three- and four-part harmonies; a musical representation of a traditional community gathering. Plena Libre last performed at the Hopkins Center in 2007. CONNECTING ARTISTS TO THE COMMUNITY While at Dartmouth, Plena Libre taught a free dance class.
