Donor Report 2013 - 2014
Celebrating Our Builders & Shapers
A message from our Board Chair
and Foundation President
Thank you for making 2013/2014 a
groundbreaking year for our Hospital.
Your generosity and support have
helped us move closer to reaching
our goal of $60M for the Our New
Era Campaign. Last year, over 4,000
donors showed their commitment
to Joseph Brant Hospital and their
belief in our shared vision of high
quality health care for our entire
Community.
This year, our annual Donor Report
is called “One” - one hospital, one
community, one vision. We celebrate
donors, like you, and your important
role in shaping and building our
Hospital.
The stories found within these pages
about our donors and the reasons
for their generous gifts are inspiring
to us all.
Among the stories are the Sgro’s,
who donate all proceeds from
McHappy Days to Joseph Brant
Hospital’s
Maternal
&
Child
Program. You will also read about
Pioneer Energy and the Hogarth
Family, who gave a transformational
gift of $1M to support the Our New

A Message from our Hospital President & CEO
This is a very exciting phase in Joseph
Brant Hospital’s journey. We have
come a long way in a very short
period of time and we are now
witnessing our vision becoming a
reality. We are very proud of our
numerous accomplishments and
successes and as a ‘Hospital team’,
we have been able to move forward
one small step at a time.
Let me extend a special thank
you to our staff, physicians,
and volunteers who through
their efforts we have been
successful in making
the patient experience a
great experience. They
continue
to
provide
quality care, safe care,
and service excellence
to ensure that your visit
to the Hospital is the
best it can be.
I would also like to
express my sincere
gratitude
to
our
committed donors whose
philanthropy is inspiring to
us all. It is amazing and so
appreciated to have the support of our
Community, our businesses and from
the very young to our seniors, who
believe in our Community Hospital and
the work that we do each and every
day.
More than 40 years have passed since
Joseph Brant Hospital had a major
Redevelopment and Expansion and we
all know that the need is real and that
it is well overdue. A ‘new Hospital’ is
so important to meet the critical health
care needs of our Community for now
and for years to come.
Please enjoy the stories within this
Donor Report. We hope they will
motivate and encourage you to
continue supporting Joseph Brant
Hospital, as you read about the return
on the investment for our Community.

To your health!
Santé - Party in the Vineyard and Wine Barrel Auction
was attended by 750 guests and held at Peller Estates
Winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake on Sept. 14, 2013
in support of the Redevelopment and Expansion of
Joseph Brant Hospital.
Guests at the event enjoyed an exclusive live auction of
dream vacations, gourmet food, fine wine, dancing, live
entertainment and a Wine Barrel Auction.
Hosted by the Peller Family, Santé raised $500,000
for the Our New Era Campaign. We are grateful to the
many generous sponsors, donors and event attendees
who contributed to the success of this spectacular “We wanted to showcase the ambitious dreams of our
evening.
new Hospital. Hosting this party allowed us to spread
the word to our Community of the importance of having
a state-of-the-art Hospital in Burlington and hopefully
encourage others to support and engage in our dream,”
said Diane Peller.
Events, like Santé, bring us together with a shared desire
to benefit Joseph Brant Hospital and to help build our
Hospital and shape it to meet our vision of excellent
health care for our Community. Our Redevelopment
and Expansion project has been successful because of
this kind of generous support.
“Critical to the Redevelopment and Expansion at Joseph Brant Hospital will be
our new Surgical Operating Suite, a suite that will allow us to both enhance the
capabilities of our surgical teams and to expand important surgical care needed by
our patients – cancer surgery, joint replacement, surgery for hip fractures, cataract
surgery, women’s health and pediatric surgery. With the generous support of our
Community, the development of our new Surgical Operating Suite will soon be a
reality.”
Dr. Dwight Prodger, General Surgery and Critical Care
The spirit of philanthropy
Last year, Pioneer Energy and
the Hogarth Family made a
transformational $1M gift to the Our
New Era Campaign in support of
the Redevelopment and Expansion
project.
“We believe in our Hospital and the
care that they provide and have
provided to our employees, their
families, and our own family for
over 50 years,” said Tim Hogarth,
CEO of Pioneer Energy. “We take
great pride in our Community and
know our gift today supports the
overwhelming need to build a new
Community Hospital that we can all
count on for years to come.”
Peter Hogarth, Murray Hogarth, Diana Hogarth, Tim Hogarth and Greg Hogarth
Murray and Diana Hogarth have
inspired their children and those
that work for them about the value
of family, friends and Community.
Pioneer Energy, a leader
in the petroleum industry, has
provided excellent service to
Ontario motorists for over 50 years.
“They always supported their
Community and that philosophy
encouraged us and everyone at
Pioneer,” said son, Tim.
“As we all know, a strong Hospital
plays a vitally important role in
our Community. It is a key pillar to
ensuring a healthy and successful
Community,” said Tim.
With
the
commitment
of
philanthropists like the Hogarth
Family supporting the Hospital’s
Redevelopment and Expansion,
our goal of ensuring a healthy
Community is attainable.
“Plans for our new Hospital include the creation of a brand new state-of-the-art Emergency
Department. The new ED will improve patient quality and rapid access to services like
x-rays and CT scans. As the most accessed part of our Hospital, with more than 47,000
visits each year, the ED continues to be a vital resource to Burlington and beyond.”
Dr. Paul Faulkner, Chief of Emergency Medicine, JBH
Making our Community a better place to live
Each McHappy Day, Ralph and
Susan Sgro donate the proceeds
raised in their Burlington and
Waterdown McDonald’s locations
to Joseph Brant Hospital’s
Maternal & Child Program.
“One of the core values of
McDonald’s is giving back
to the Community where
you work and live,” said
Susan.
Since 1988, the Sgro’s
have
actively
and
generously
supported
Joseph Brant Hospital
Foundation. In that time,
the Hospital’s Special
Care Nursery, Maternal
and Child Family Sitting
Room, Ambulatory Care
program, Nina’s Place,
the Critical Needs Fund
and the Tomorrow is Here
Capital Campaign have all
benefited from their philanthropy.
The Sgro’s also continue their
leadership support through the Our
New Era Campaign, with Ralph
taking a leadership role as Vice Chair
of its Campaign Cabinet.
“At one time or another, we’re all going
to use the Hospital, so it’s wonderful
to be part of the redevelopment,”
said Susan.
Helping to shape and build our
Community is linked to quality health
care for the Sgro’s.
“There’s a lot of pleasure in
seeing the results of contributing
to the Community,” said Ralph. “I
think letting individuals know the
importance of good health care is
probably the most important thing we
can do for our Community.”
“I got a lot of attention and one-on-one time at
the Special Care Nursery. They didn’t rush me,
and thoroughly answered my questions. I saw a
pediatrician, who gave me a progress report
every day. The nurses were very good at
giving me an overview of my child’s care
when I wasn’t there.”
Kelly Mactaggart, Mother of twins, Fynn and
Ainsley, patients at JBH
Focused giving to help our Community
Local and Regional TD Bank Group employees with TD Bank Group Deputy Chair Frank McKenna, centre
TD Bank Group showed its
commitment to the Our New Era
Campaign by proudly making a
$750,000 pledge to establish the
TD Grants in Medical Excellence
Program at Joseph Brant Hospital.
“As the demands on our health care
professionals continually change,
the tools and resources they rely
on also evolve. Therefore, it is
important to ensure that our nurses
and Hospital staff have the right
skills and knowledge they need
to provide the best care for their
patients,” said Frank McKenna,
Deputy Chair of TD Bank Group.
The aim of the TD Grants in Medical
Excellence Program is to strengthen
the ability of nurses and front-line
staff to provide “person-centered
care” to patients. Staff will also be
trained in a new Simulation Lab
that will be built during phase two of
the Hospital’s Redevelopment and
Expansion project. The Simulation
Lab will provide learners with a
virtual environment where they can
apply what they have learned, gain
new skills and be trained on new
equipment.
TD
takes
corporate
social
responsibility to heart. It’s strongly
committed to making a positive
impact through focused giving to
address issues or needs in the
communities where it does business
and where their employees live and
work.
By helping to educate our nurses
and clinicians, TD’s donation
helps to build and shape our new
Hospital and demonstrates our
shared vision that excellent health
care is vital to our Community.
“Because the medical field is always changing, it is
important that we keep up with the new techniques.
When we educate nurses on the latest methods,
they’re going to be able to provide the best possible
care for their patients.”
Stacey Shepherd, Registered Nurse, JBH
Building a better Community
At the heart of Bill and Catriona
Russell’s personal commitment
and long-standing generosity
to Joseph Brant Hospital
Foundation is the well-being of
their family and Community.
The Russells own Interprovincial Corrosion Control Company
(ICCC), which delivers professional engineering services and
manufactures corrosion control/
cathodic protection materials.
“Everyone, all our friends and
family, at some point have been
touched by the Hospital,” said
Catriona.
They share the vision of
Joseph
Brant
Hospital
Foundation and are proud
to support us as we work
together to build a better
Community by providing
excellent health care.
As long-time residents of our
Community, Bill and Catriona
realize what a state-of-theart Hospital can provide to all
residents of Burlington and
beyond.
“We talk about the needs for the
Community amongst our friends
and family and encourage them
that a strong Hospital provides
for a strong Community,” Bill
said.
“We are committed to
supporting Joseph Brant
Hospital in its transformation
and expansion, because we
believe that we need a strong
local Hospital with an ability to
serve our growing Community,”
said the Russells.
“I was in the Close Observation Room on the
third floor, and the nurses and staff couldn’t
have been better. I think they went above and
beyond for me. Dr. James Rogers and his
team were wonderful. They got in touch with
my liver specialist in London, and he and Dr.
Rogers were soon on speed dial. I received
excellent care.”
