2012-2013 Annual Donor Impact Report
Meet Our Builders & Shapers...
Donor Report 2012-2013
With every dollar you donate,
you’re casting a vote for the
kind of Community you want...
2
A message from our Foundation President
and Board Chair
Thank you for helping to make
2012/2013 another milestone
year for our Hospital.
Last year, over 4,000
donors helped to lead the way
in supporting excellence in
compassionate and high-quality
health care at Joseph Brant
Hospital.
We have entitled this year’s
Donor Report “Builders &
Shapers” to celebrate you, our
generous donors, as you are
helping to Build a stronger and
healthier Community, while
Shaping the future of quality
health care in Burlington and
surrounding area.
As you read through the stories
and reflect on each donor’s
reason for giving, we hope you
too will feel a sense of pride
knowing that together we are
helping to Build and Shape our
Community’s Hospital.
The stories we have chosen
to share with you exemplify
the diverse range of support
for our Hospital, and include a
young Burlington boy making
birdhouses, a Burlington family
teaching the importance of
giving back to their children and
the story of a large corporation
engaging their staff to make a
difference in their Community.
These stories are also about
philanthropy and how we as
a Community can bring about
change and have an impact that
will benefit us all.
You make the great work we do
possible. More importantly you
are leading the way in helping
Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation
continue to inspire Burlington to
invest in our Hospital to improve
the health and well-being of our
citizens.
We hope that you take
a moment to celebrate the
accomplishments we have
achieved over the past year.
Together, we are on our way
to Building our new Hospital
and Shaping health care in our
Community. Thank you.

A message from our
Hospital President & CEO
Eric Vandewall,
President & CEO,
Joseph Brant Hospital

This past year has been simply
incredible for Joseph Brant Hospital.
I would like to take this opportunity
to extend my profound appreciation
to the Builders & Shapers who are
making great things happen at
Joseph Brant Hospital.
From our generous donors, to our
physicians, staff and volunteers; we
are lucky to have a team of people
that are committed to creating a
health care environment that our
Community can rely on and take
pride in. Strengthening quality and
patient safety, and providing service
excellence, continue to be key
priorities.
Joseph Brant Hospital has not
had a major redevelopment in over
40 years. This is our time, for our
Hospital. We are renovating and
expanding to meet the Critical Needs
of our Community.
I thank you for taking the time to
read about some of the Foundation’s
many Builders & Shapers who are
making this happen.
Through our innovative donors, as
well as our corporate giving partners,
we are already able to meet higher
care standards, introduce state-ofthe-art equipment and support new
services.
You are helping, in ways both big
and small, to provide our Community
with the health care facility it requires
and deserves. Thank you.
Eric Vandewall,
President & CEO,
Joseph Brant Hospital
Its never too early to make a difference
Kaitlyn Wilson Putting the fun in philanthropy
Inspired by her parents from a
young age, Kaitlyn Wilson has
learned the importance of giving
back. For Kaitlyn, the secret
to success is simple; helping
others can be easy, especially
if it involves something you
already love to do.
As an avid volleyball player
and coach, Kaitlyn wanted to
turn her passion into something
that could also benefit others.
Kaitlyn decided to organize a
beach volleyball tournament
for her friends, and at the same
time raise money for a cause
dear to her. Her event has
continued to grow and is now
known as the Annual Charity
Beach Volleyball Classic.
Thanks to Kaitlyn’s
efforts, our Hospital
Foundation has been
the beneficiary of
funds raised from
the Classic for the past five
years.
When asked about her
motivation for turning a fun
volleyball tournament into a
charity event, Kaitlyn explained
that it was a simple decision
and a great fit. Being a
philanthropist is about doing
something that that you are
genuinely passionate about and
helping others.
Perhaps the most significant
contribution that Kaitlyn has
made is in how she has inspired
others. Showing her friends
that they can have fun while
supporting an important cause,
she has encouraged them to
organize events such as; annual
soccer and golf tournaments
benefitting other local charities.
Kaitlyn’s continued commitment
is helping to Build a stronger
Community and future generous
philanthropists.
“I believe Joseph Brant
Hospital is one of the most
important organizations in our
Community. The health and
wellness of our family, friends
and fellow residents relies on
the resources at the Hospital.
“I want to do my part to show
how lucky I have been to have
a healthy and happy family and
support those who are in need.
It is my hope that everyone in
our Community will support
Joseph Brant Hospital so that
they will be able to continue to
provide world-class health care
at home.”
Our donors come in different Shapes and sizes...
young Connor and his Dad together built birdhouses
with recycled materials they collected around their
neighbourhood. Connor then sold the birdhouses
from the front lawn of his family home, donating all of
his proceeds to Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation and
our Critical Needs.
“I built the birdhouses with my Dad from old materials
we found. I chose the Hospital because I was born here,
and it’s a great thing to do.”
Connor, Age 7

Leading By Example
Stephen & Carmela Friday Ambassadors for our Community Hospital
For almost two decades, Stephen,
Carmela and the Friday Family have
called Burlington their home. Over
the years, the Friday’s have owned
several businesses and most recently
operated a local branch of Assante
Wealth Management. As prominent
business leaders in our Community,
the Friday’s have supported numerous
local organizations, with special
attention to Joseph Brant Hospital.
“We are proud to support Joseph
Brant Hospital during this exciting
time. Together, we will Build a stronger
and healthier Community.”
Stephen and Carmela know firsthand
the important role that quality health
care plays in our Community. Their
commitment to Joseph Brant Hospital
is evident through Stephen’s work for
over eight years with the Hospital’s
Board of Governors as Chair of
several board committees, Vice Chair
and subsequently Chair. Stephen’s
work in this capacity has helped see
the Hospital through its most historic
achievements to date.
Carmela sits on the Joseph Brant
Hospital Foundation Board of
Directors, and for three years has
Chaired the Foundation’s largest
annual fundraising Gala – the Crystal
Ball, which to date has raised more
than $3 million towards our Hospital’s
Critical Needs. Carmela has also
served as 2nd Vice Chair on the
Joseph Brant Hospital Auxiliary Board.
Together, the Friday’s have helped
to Build our new Hospital through
their financial contribution, as well
as through their gift of time. They
are helping to Shape health care in
Burlington.
Construction is underway in our Redevelopment and Expansion Project; the new
Halton McMaster Family Health Care Centre, administration offices and a new
parking facility are due to be completed in spring 2014. Phase Two will bring the
Hospital a new seven story patient tower offering the highest quality of care in a
state-of-the-art facility with additional acute inpatient beds, an expanded cancer
unit, an expanded ICU, new operating rooms and more.

Corporate philanthropy at work
Scotiabank A partner in Community investment
Scotiabank continues to be a
proud and committed partner
of Joseph Brant Hospital
Foundation.
This leading multinational
financial services provider
works tirelessly to meet the
needs of their customers locally
and internationally.
Scotiabank’s commitment
to helping Build stronger
communities is evident
through their “Bright Futures”
program, promoting their global
philanthropic vision; bringing
together the passion of their
employees and empowering
staff to give back to the
communities in which they live
and work.
The staff of local Burlington
branches give generously of
their time and talents and can
be seen sporting their red
t-shirts and balloons, while
volunteering to help raise funds
at Community events such as
Crystal Ball and the Amazing
Bed Race. Scotiabank then
matches the monies raised,
through their corporate “Bright
Futures” program, doubling
the impact of their contribution
and Shaping health care in
Burlington.
“We are proud to work for
a company that supports our
Community and takes an
interest in encouraging their
staff to make a difference.”
Scotiabank staff have said
giving back to the Hospital
feels like the “right thing
to do,” and fosters a sense
of pride and contentment,
knowing that monies raised
not only stay local; but, directly
impact the lives of their clients,
staff and families providing
excellent health care so close
to home.
“The importance of our donors to grassroots patient
care is immeasurable; it changes everything with respect
to the equipment we’re able to use, the diagnostic testing
we are able to achieve in a timely fashion and the holistic
environment we are able to provide for patients during
their healing process. Most recently, we have been able
to update the Cardiac Monitors in the Hospital; this has
allowed us to remotely monitor our patients for increased
quality in care. There’s no better place to donate to than
at home, in your own Community.”
Dr. Arshad Hack,
Chief of Family Medicine

Working to make Our New Era a reality
Kevin and Barbara Brady’s Passion for helping others
For more than 20 years, Kevin and
Barbara Brady have generously given
of their time and resources to various
organizations throughout Burlington. As
the President of Brady Financial Group,
Kevin knows that the key to personal
success is through passion, hard work,
commitment and a strong desire to make
a difference in the lives of others.
Kevin is a true philanthropist – his
involvement in the Community has
been tremendous. In 2007, Kevin was
awarded Burlington Citizen of the Year,
and in 2010, Kevin was named Burlington
Community Foundation’s Philanthropist of
the year. More than 40 organizations have
benefitted from Kevin’s leadership and
support in Burlington and the surrounding
area.
In 1999, Kevin suffered a serious health
scare and slipped into a coma. This life
altering experience further heightened
Kevin and Barbara’s commitment to
ensuring that great health care continues
to be accessible to our Community.
“When people ask why I am involved
with Joseph Brant Hospital, it’s easy. The
Hospital has been a lifeline for me and
my family. I firmly believe we need to do
everything we can to ensure we have a
first-class facility for us, our children and
our grandchildren.”
The Brady’s commitment to Building
and Shaping our Hospital is evident
through Barbara’s recent work with the
Hospital’s Auxiliary and Kevin’s leadership
in numerous roles as past Chair of the
Foundation’s Board. Once again, Kevin
is playing a key role as Chair of the
Our New Era Campaign; the largest
fundraising campaign Burlington has seen
to date.
Together, the Brady Family and Brady
Financial Group are setting an example
of philanthropic spirit and Community
leadership. In addition to their generous
financial contribution to the Our New Era
Campaign, the Brady’s give generously
of their time serving as committed
ambassadors to our Hospital.
Your dollars support the Critical Needs of our
Hospital. With your support, we were able to
purchase much-needed equipment that assist our
Health Care professionals in providing quality care
every day to our patients. Examples of equipment
purchased include; Hi-Low Beds, Portable Blood
Pressure Machines, Bladder Scanner, Infant Warmer,
Birthing Mattress, IV Baxter Pumps and Laparoscopic
Instruments, to name only a few.

Building better health care for Burlington
Molinaros The Family that gives together
Over the past 50 years,
the Molinaro Family has
been Building and Shaping
our Community. The
Molinaro Group, a family run
company, has built some of
Burlington’s most prestigious
developments and have
helped to Shape and revitalize
our Community’s Downtown
core.
Dominic Molinaro, his sons
Vince and Robert and son-inlaw Sam, know firsthand that
their customers, vision, and
dedication have been integral
to their company’s success
and it is this success that has
allowed the Molinaro family to
give back in a variety of ways.
Perhaps the most celebrated
to date is the Molinaro
Family’s generous $1 million
dollar contribution to the
Joseph Brant Hospital’s
Redevelopment and Expansion
Project.
“From birth to ailment and
sickness, we will all need the
Hospital at some time.” For
this reason, the Molinaro
Family chose to donate where
they felt their contribution would
have the greatest impact.
Supporting our Hospital meant
“The Molinaro Group is an excellent example of
how Corporate Burlington can help us achieve our
fundraising goals. Our inpatient units have not been
renovated in 40 years, this is an exciting time for our
Hospital. They are leaders in our Community who
believe quality care, and excellence in health are
priorities. The impact our donors have is immense,
and leaves an inspiring legacy.”
Anissa Hilborn,
Foundation President
that their generous contribution
would benefit everyone in our
Community.
It is evident that the Molinaro
Family knows that hard work
and determination go a long
way, from Dominic’s humble
beginnings in Italy, to arriving
in Canada and building a
successful family business.
Now run by the second
generation of Molinaro’s.
Vince, Robert and Sam have
learned by example and want
to impart on their children, as
it was instilled in them, the
importance of giving back to
your Community.
“Not only do we hope to be
an example for our children;
but, for Corporate Burlington
and beyond. Investing in the
Hospital is investing in our
future.”
Nothing is more important to
the Molinaros than family. A
healthy and happy family starts
with the availability of excellent
health care close to home and
the Molinaros are helping to
ensure that Burlington has the
Hospital it deserves.

Mothers know best
Margie Swire Instilling a legacy and setting an example
For over 50 years, Margie dedicated
her time to Joseph Brant Hospital as
a devoted volunteer. She was a true
philanthropist, giving of both her time and
resources.
Margie was recognized over the years
with several awards and distinctions such
as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.
Her life-long service to the Hospital and
Community has touched the lives of so
many.
Margie was a familiar face at our
Hospital, as she was often seen warmly
welcoming patients and visitors, and
providing a helping hand wherever
she could. For many years, she gave
countless hours behind the scenes
to many fundraisers in support of
the Hospital’s Auxiliary, as well she
volunteered her time with Pastoral
Services where she led the Memorial
Service team. Margie could be found
at the Hospital just about any hour of
the day or night as an on-call chaplain
providing compassionate care to many
patients and families throughout her
tenure.
Margie’s final days were spent at
Joseph Brant Hospital surrounded by her
family and friends. Margie’s legacy lives
on by her donation towards the purchase
of IV Baxter Pumps. The lifesaving
equipment administers drugs to patients
in the most critical circumstances.
“Our mother’s gift to the Hospital,
of both funds and of time, has set an
example of how we can become involved
in our Community, and give where we will
have the most impact.”
Margie instilled her philanthropic spirit in
her children from a young age. Jim and
Jeff Swire, pictured here, have continued
in their mother’s legacy becoming donors
to the Foundation themselves.
Like their mother, Jim and Jeff believe
in the important role of Building our new
Hospital and the impact it has on the
wellness of the Community overall. They
feel that their gift will help to ensure
quality care continues to be available for
their children and their children’s children.
“IV Baxter Pumps are used in a critical care setting,
primarily to infuse lifesaving drugs. They are
used for the most critical patients; allowing us to
provide minute drips of fluids. Baxter Pumps have
dramatically changed my job; in a code situation we
are able to concentrate on the care of the patient
knowing the Baxter Pump is registering the correct
amount of fluid in an efficient and precise manner.”
Nurse Kate Hetherington, ICU

“Raising funds in support of JBH’s Maternal and Child
Unit was a natural choice for our event. All of us are
mothers and most of us had our children at Joseph Brant
Hospital. When we toured the Maternal and Child Unit, we
saw firsthand the need to update the area. Some things
hadn’t changed since our children were born. We are very
proud that we were able to contribute this new Unit.”
