I agree. We like to talk. But one of the most fascinating commonalities I have discovered in women around the world is our grace, not simply our willingness to forgive, but our willingness to support each other, hold each other’s babies, cry each other’s tears. That empathy, a compassionate way of seeing a situation from another person’s viewpoint is what I believe will ultimately save the world.” Liz Walker is an ordained minister, community activist, award-winning documentary :ilm producer and co-founder of a humanitarian organization in Sudan called “My Sister’s Keeper”. With a focus on economic and educational initiatives for Sudanese women and girls, this organization built a Girls’ school in 2007 which despite con:lict and political upheaval continues to operate today. Reverend Walker comes to this work after 21 years as Boston’s :irst African American Television News Anchor on WBZ TV. A graduate of Harvard Divinity School, Reverend Walker has long been actively involved in many community service organizations and projects. She has a special interest in the victims and survivors of domestic violence, and helped found the Jane Doe Safety Fund, a multi-million dollar statewide anti-violence initiative that works on policy and supports domestic abuse shelters and safe houses around the Commonwealth. Currently the Pastor of Roxbury Presbyterian Church, Reverend Walker also serves on many boards and has been awarded honorary degrees from numerous institutions. Mary Ann Anthony, Director of the Child Care Division,CatholicCharities. The role of director involves being someone’s “boss”. For the new director, this often requires a shift in perspective from being a coworker and peer. Participants will share the highs and lows of their new status, and learn ways to navigate the dif:icult but rewarding waters of program management. A-2 The Basics of Budgeting. Bess Emmanuel, Instructor, WheelockCollege. When you become a director, chances are your training has focused on child development and family issues—not on managing numbers! This workshop will target what you need to know about your budget and discuss useful tools for monitoring the money. We will demystify the jargon, discuss common issues, and practice analyzing budgets. A-3 The Art of Communicating with Parents. Betsy Abrams, LICSW. Parents are our natural allies and partners and yet, communication can sometimes be challenging. This workshop will be an opportunity to: identify the existing strengths and challenges within your program; focus on communication and con:lict resolution skills; increase awareness and skill in bridging differences between staff and parents. There is increased scrutiny of employee handbooks as federal agencies like the NLRB have become more aggressive in their review of employer policies. Employment terminations raise a number of legal issues, from wage and hour, to unemployment, to anti-discrimination, and more. A dif:icult termination presents added risks, perhaps even workplace violence. Join us to learn about the key legal requirements and best practices. Leadership style is not a function of personality—it is a strategic choice. The more styles a leader exhibits, the better. Explore ways to help staff develop self-awareness, identify their own strengths and work on setting personal goals. This workshop will provide you with information on Early Education Policy in Massachusetts and the tools needed to become an effective advocate for children and families that you serve. Participants will engage in interactive discussions and will learn about how to connect with local media, legislators, and other key decision makers. Current early childhood policy and initiatives on the national, state and local level will be discussed. P-5 We Are in This Together. Effective approaches to resolving problems that fuel challenging behavior need coordination, collaboration, and partnerships! Learn to identify “good people” by changing your interview questions. Good marketing involves providing useful information to potential customers and presenting a positive impression of your services. Early childhood programs don’t have vast resources for this. What are ways to maximize resources while still attracting business? What about social media? This workshop will help you analyze your program from a marketing perspective. A-7 The Mindful Director—Focused Strategies for Enhancing Leadership. Susan MacDonald, Professional Speaker and LeadershipCoach. This workshop will introduce key strategies and discuss basic practices to help you cultivate mindful leadership in your early childhood program. A resource list will be provided. This workshop will guide women in developing strength-based leadership practices that will help them to inspire and guide others in achieving result oriented actions to improve program quality.
