Readercon 15 July 11 - 13, 2003 Boston Marriott Burlington Burlington, Massachusetts PROGRESS REPORT 2 Greetings from the Readercon Committee Welcome to another extraordinary Readercon! Our committee has worked hard to put together another fine weekend that celebrates imaginative literature of all kinds. This year we honor an unprecedented three guests - Hal Clement, Rudy Rucker, and Howard Waldrop; plus our memorial Guest of Honor, R. A. Lafferty. We are taking a rest in 2004, so this is the last Readercon fix available in legal form until 2005! Julianne Chatelaine & Amy West, Co-Chairs. proven wrong, with mathematical precision? That's not a challenge to be taken for granted, and Hal meets it with rigorous scientific extrapolation, closely tied to current laboratory science. Seeing his unique skill at that is quite enough for many of us. But even if he were writing epic fantasy, he would be a fine writer, fluent in the use of understatement, asking his readers to think for themselves. See his recent Half Life, and think how other writers would have presented those characters. At an age when most writers are retired, Hal is still writing, and always improving his craft. There's much more to say about Hal than just "hard SF," and this year Readercon will not take any of it for granted. Michael Matthew Hal Clement Guest of Honor Rudy Rucker Guest of Honor It's easy to take Hal Clement for granted. We see him at so many conventions, where he's always so approachable. His earliest books have been around for a while now. He has that greatest-generation habit of understatement about his accomplishments. Perhaps we tag him "great, hard-SF writer" and move on. Well, Hal certainly is terrific at hard SF, among the best of those who have taken up that part of the writer's trade. How many fiction writers need to consider the possibility of being As a writer Rudy Rucker has many dimensions. There is no simple three-dimensional genre box to place him neatly into. His writing is witty, weird, brilliant and mind-dazzling all at once. You may have been introduced to Rudy’s work at the very beginning with his first science fiction novel, Spacetime Donuts. Or perhaps it was not until his cyberpunk (e. g. Wetware, Software - both of which won the Philip K.Dick Award) or his “transreal” novels (e. g. White Light, The Sex Sphere) of the 1980’s that you walked home from a convention or a bookstore with your first Rudy Rucker novel tucked neatly under your arm. Maybe you’re not quite as old (or as quick) as some of us and only stumbled upon the author’s imaginative literature in the 1990’s (e. g. Hacker and the Ants, Freeware) or the 21st century (e. g. Spaceland, Realware). As Rudy is also a mathematician, computer scientist, and professor, it is entirely possible that you may have met him through some of his nonfiction work; such as: The Fourth Dimension, Seek!, Infinity and the Mind or Software Engineering and Computer Games. Whether you are already familiar with Rudy Rucker’s extraordinary literature or are in need of an introduction, Readercon this July is the place to be. Did I mention you may have run across his new historical fiction novel about the Flemish artist Peter Bruegel if you were wandering other parts of the bookstore? Lois Powers Howard Waldrop Guest of Honor Modern science fiction seems dominated by novels, and ever-longer ones at that. Readercon remembers that the progress of the field was once nearly synonymous with fiction at shorter lengths, and that many writers built their careers on short stories. Some brave writers still do, and we are delighted to have one with us this summer. Howard Waldrop is known for taking years to craft his exquisite stories. They are original to a degree rare in his peers, and formidably researched, with background detail worthy of a novel. Whether tracing the alternate history of airpower in the Civil and Indian Wars, or the possible survival of the dodo, or the fate of one who loves the cinema too well, Waldrop brings us stories no one could improve upon. We're eagerly anticipating this chance to consider the vital role short fiction - and Howard Waldrop - play in SF today. Michael Matthew R. A. Lafferty Memorial Guest of Honor Raphael Aloysius Lafferty (1914-2002) lived most of his life in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He didn't start writing until he was in his 40s, producing much of his work after he retired from his career as "a correspondence school electrical engineer." His first published SF story was "Day of the Glacier" (1960), and he went on to write more than 200 short stories and more than 20 novels, including Past Master (1968), Space Chantey(1968), and Okla Hannali (1972), a non-genre novel about the Trail of Tears. His short story "Eurema's Dam" tied for the 1973 Hugo Award. He also received the World Fantasy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1990, and the Cordwainer Smith Foundation "Rediscovery" Award in 2002. Lafferty's legendary eccentricity extended to his personal life. He never learned to drive. He always wrote on a manual typewriter, which wasn't quite as unusual as it seems today since he unfortunately retired from writing in the 1980s due to his first stroke. All good writers have distinct voices, but Lafferty was unique. In an obituary for the Washington Post, Neil Gaiman said that Lafferty "was undoubtedly the finest writer of whatever it was that he did that ever there was." And he was probably the best at what he did that ever will be. Children at Readercon Supervising the children will be two adults, both experienced childcare providers, who have cared for children, preschool through 6th grade, for over ten years. Welcome to returning and first time ReaderKids! We will be offering our children's program again this year! Thank you for all your suggestions and feedback. The children will entertain themselves with various activities including games, construction toys, drawing and coloring, making crafts, and socializing. The program will run two sessions on Saturday only. Each session will last about two hours, one from 9:45am until 12:00pm, the other from 1:45pm until 4:00pm. (Yes, we know you would like more coverage, but we were unable to extend the hours this year. Rest assured, it is high on our priority list!) Cost is $10 per session per child. Bathroom-independent children ages 4 through 12 years may participate. Parents of children on the borders of age, or bathroom independence, or with other special circumstances, who are interested in our program may contact Louise Waugh at <Louise@readercon.org>, or at the To participate: * Go to Registration to buy a one-session coupon ($10) for each session that each child will attend. You will also receive a colorful wristband. * Write your name (and/or the name of whoever will be responsible for this child during the con) on the wristband. * Bring the registered, wristband-wearing child to the room number listed on the coupon. * Check in with the adults in the room and leave your contact information (pager, cell phone, etc.) * Say good-bye, enjoy your panels, and return on time to pick up your ReaderKid. For reasons of safety, children participating in ReaderKids: * Must be delivered by a parent or other adult (age 18 and up) * May not leave ReaderKids unless accompanied by an authorized adult Hotel The Boston Marriott Burlington will be hosting us for the fourth time this year. Guest rooms are $97 per night (plus tax) for single to quad. Call 781-229-6565 by June 19 to reserve your room. Be sure to mention Readercon so that you get the discounted rate. Act soon - June 19 is the cutoff date! How to Get There The Burlington Marriott is northwest of Boston, at the intersection of Route 3A and Burlington Mall Road, right off of I-95/128 at exit 33B (Route 3A North). With over 15 restaurants of all kinds and the Burlington Mall within a mile, you don't need a car in order to get decent food or meet random personal needs. The Marriott has plenty of free parking. By Car, from the South or West: Take the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) east towards Boston. Take exit 14 and follow the signs for I-95/128 North. Continue with the "Northbound on I-95/128" directions below. By Car, from the North: Take Route 3 South towards Boston. At the junction of Route 3 and I-95/128, take I-95/128 North. Follow the "Northbound on I-95/128" directions below. OR take I-93 South to the I-95/128 South exit (Exit 37A). Follow the "Southbound on I-95/128" directions below. By Car, from Boston: Take I-90 (the Massachusetts Turnpike) West towards Newton/Waltham to exit 15. Take I-95/128 North. Continue with the "Northbound on I-95/128" directions below. OR for the scenic route, take either Route 2 or 2A to Route 3 North to Burlington. After passing under I-95, turn left at the traffic light. The hotel will be on your left. Northbound on I-95/128: Take exit 33B (for Route 3A North), which is the second exit past the compound exit for the Lowell Connector and Middlesex Turnpike, where the traffic from Rte. 3 South merges in. At the end of the ramp, merge quickly across to the far left, and make a left onto Burlington Mall Road at the first traffic light. Turn left at the first traffic light to enter the Marriott's parking lot. Southbound on I-95/128: Take exit 33B (for Route 3A North). Go straight through the light at the end of the exit ramp, onto Burlington Mall Road. Turn left at the first traffic light to enter the Marriott's parking lot. By Air, via Logan Airport: Shared van services from Logan are available from Airporter (877-899-6161, $28 for 1 passenger, $8 each additional) and Flightline (800-245-2525, $32 for 1 passenger, $44 for 2 or 3, $58 for 4). It is a good idea to contact them in advance and make a reservation. Taxi fare from Logan to the hotel is $50 to $60. You'll find the taxi stands on the Baggage Claim level. You can take mass transit from the airport all the way to the Marriott, but you'll have to take a combination of buses and subway trains. This will cost you less than $7, but may take as long as 2 hours. Take the #22 or #33 free Massport shuttle bus to the T station. For the fastest connections, take the subway Blue Line inbound to Government Center and change to the Green Line. Go one stop on the Green Line to Park Street and then change to the Red Line outbound to Alewife station. Continue with the "By Mass Transit" directions below. If you decide to rent a car, ask for directions to the Massachusetts Turnpike from your rental pickup spot. (This will probably involve a tunnel of some sort, but which one may vary based on location, time of day, and status of the Big Dig.) Then follow the "By car, from Boston" directions above. Directions to and from Logan and information about shuttles, taxis, and rental cars can be found at Logan's Web site or by phone at 800-23-LOGAN. By Air, via Hanscom Field: Shuttle America and US Airways have commercial flights to and from Bedford's Hanscom, a small regional airport not far from the hotel. We recommend using a taxi to get between Hanscom and the hotel. You will most likely have to call for a taxi upon arrival. More info is found at Hanscom's Web site: http://www.massport.com/airports/hansc.html. By Train and Bus, via South Station: Amtrak trains and Peter Pan and Greyhound buses come into South Station in Boston, which is also a T station on the Red Line. Take the T outbound to Alewife. Continue with the mass transit directions below. By Mass Transit: Take the Red Line to the end at Alewife station. Change to the #350 bus, which runs hourly (or a little better) every day during the con, from about 7am to about 10pm. Tell the driver that you want to get off at the Marriott, since the hotel may not be visible from the bus. Most runs will drop you off in front of the hotel. You can pick up a bus schedule and route map at Alewife or on the MBTA's Web site. The pick-up spot is on Route 3A, on the far side of Burlington Mall Road from the Marriott.
