Principals Report
Dear St Brendan‘s School Community,
Harmony Day
Last Friday was a wonderful celebration of Harmony Day for our school community. It was fabulous to see the
students and teachers dress in national costumes or colors of the flag where they or their relations were born. The
children were extremely proud to represent their country.
At Assembly there was such a sea of beautiful costumes and colour. Our day began with ―Welcome to Country‖ by
Kelis Saunders and Ashtyn Atkinson, and even speaking in their native aboriginal language. Our school choir sang
―We are Australia‖ beautifully, and a young aboriginal dance group were fantastic and enjoyed by all.
The students enjoyed performances such as Chinese dancer, A Taste of India, Hip Hop Dancing, African Drummer,
and a Puppeteer Show. The children also took part in craft activities which they enjoyed..
Many thanks to Sally Mills for all her planning and organising of our great guest artists, to Julie Ferguson, our Koori
Educator for organising the Aboriginal Dancers, to Nicky Mammone for her work in organising the creative
activities, to Angela Collins for her work with the choir. Special mention and thanks also to Leanne Pellegrino and
Angela Shaw for all their work to ensure Harmony Day was a success.
Thanks to all our Parents for organising their children‘s outfits and joining us at assembly.
Junior Years
Prep - Year 2 had a wonderful day on Thursday with guest speakers talking about their professions. We had many
speakers and the children thoroughly enjoyed the day. Many thanks to Leanne Pellegrino and her Junior Years
Team for all the preparations and organisation on the day. Special thanks also to all our guests for giving up their
time to be part of this wonderful learning experience.
Year 3/4
Our Year 3/4 students enjoyed their recent excursion to Shepparton Historical Museum. This provided some rich
discussions about the ―old Days‖ and how technology etc. has changed dramatically. The students were able to see
many older equipment and items that they quite possibly have never seen before.
Year 5/6
Year 5/6 students attended a talk on how Parliament works and watched a mock session on introducing a bill. The
students had lots of questions and discussions about our government.
Last Day of Term 1
It is hard to believe that one term has gone by. I must say it has been a very good term with all our children settling
in well and engaged in their learning.
We will finish at 2.20pm with the popular Easter Egg Raffle being drawn at 1.45pm. Please remember to bring any
eggs in before Thursday as the Parents and Friends would appreciate donations.
Thanks
Many thanks to Naomi Egglestone, who has been working in our office for the past two terms when she commenced
after Adriana left on materninty leave. Naomi has been fantastic in her role and we wish her all the best in her continuing in her position of three days at St Mary‘s Primary Mooroopna. It was very kind of her to help us out while
still working at St Mary‘s. Thank you Naomi
Wishing all our Families and School Community a Happy Easter and a safe and enjoyable break.

Harmony Day, Today, 21st March, celebrates Australia‘s cultural diversity.
The theme for Harmony Day, 2016 is, ‗Our diversity is our strength‘, and we are so blessed and fortunate to live in
a diverse multicultural community here in Shepparton.
On Friday, we celebrated Harmony Day, a special day for us to reflect, acknowledge and embrace inclusiveness,
respect and a sense of belonging for us all in our multicultural school community here at St. Brendan‘s.
Our special day began with a whole school Assembly, and we welcomed parents and families. The students and
staff joined in the spirit and came dressed in traditional dress costumes or colours that reflected their country of
interest.
Kelis Saunders, Ashtyn Atkinson and Will Morgan presented ‗Welcome To Country‘, and we were entertained by
our school choir lead by Mrs Ange Collins, singing a beautiful rendition of ‗We Are Australian‘. Our Koori
Educational Officer, Mrs Julie Ferguson introduced an Aboriginal Dance Group based in Shepparton, ‗Individual
Dance Spirits‘ who performed an inspiring dance.
During the day the students completed some craft activities decorating Harmony Day Bambolas, (dolls) and
bookmarks organized by Mrs Nicky Mammone, Mrs Leanne Pellegrino and Mrs Ange Shaw.
Our students joined in the fun and celebrations, and were entertained by our visiting performers: African Dance and
Drumming; Chinese Dance and Arts; Indian dance and drama; Hip Hop Dancing and an Indonesian Master Shadow
Puppeteer.
Many thanks to Paula and our wonderful staff for their support and enthusiasm
ensuring an engaging and fun-filled Harmony Day enjoyed by our school
community.

Senior Years Learning Community News
This term we have been learning about Law Making and Parliament in our Inquiry-based learning. Students
looked at local, State and Federal government roles and responsibilities. We have been looking at persuasive text
and Year 6 students have been preparing a debate. Next term our Inquiry focus is on the environment. To
conclude this unit‘s understandings and to prepare for next term‘s Inquiry-based learning about sustainable
practises to protect our environment and living things, we will be viewing the recently released movie ‗Oddball‘.
ODDBALL- Film Review The Guardian
‘Based on the true story of a dog and his penguin friends, Oddball is both sweet and comes with a gentle
message of environment preservation.’
The creators of family movie Oddball drew inspiration from a real-life story about a beloved tail-wagger. The
titular do-gooder is a Maremma sheepdog. They are fluffy, cuddly, white things that look like golden retrievers
crossed with polar bears.
It is revealed through the film that the Maremma sheep dog is able to also protect penguins. The premise of
screenwriter Peter Ivan‘s story is rooted in the true tale of how a chicken farmer named Allan ―Swampy‖ Marsh
and his pet Maremma saved a colony of penguins on Middle Island – a sanctuary just off the coast of
Warrnambool in Victoria – after it was discovered the dog was scaring away foxes that were devouring those cute
waddling little things.

The Ceremonies of Holy Week
Last Sunday was Palm Sunday which is the first day of Holy week. This week we are celebrating significant days
of the Easter Triduum with a whole school gathering at 9am in the courtyard on Tuesday & Wednesday.
Today students in 1/2 Finn & Anderson presented the re-enactment of Jesus‘ triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
On Tuesday Middle Years students will present Holy Thursday — a re-enactment of The Last Supper.
On Wednesday the Senior Years will commemorate Good Friday and present the re-enactment of the ‗Way of
the Cross‘.
The Prep/1 students will celebrate Easter Sunday and the Resurrection of Jesus Christ at our first School
Assembly in Term 2 Friday 15th April. It would be lovely to see our families join our School community to
commemorate these days of Holy Week.
