The April Social was hosted by Bwana, Christy, Natasha, Nedra and Nina, boy was it a hopping good time! To begin the evening, the ladies surprised the group with beauty talks and foot soaks by Mary Kay representative, Cheryl Brown. As the enchanting aroma of dinner traveled through the air, we were led into the den of delight where greeted by the vibrant colors of celebration. The night was filled with great food, wonderful desserts, humorous games, bountiful gifts and beautiful friendships. Truly an event we will rave about for years to come. See photos on page 2 of how it really went down at the Mardi Gras!!!! The Before Savannah Area Family Emergency Shelter May 28, 2011 After a February visit to the Savannah Area Family Emergency Shelter, Ladies of Leisure decided to adopt an area within the facility to revitalize as one of our 2011 community service projects. The Dream Team and their helpers were hard at work on the Saturday before Memorial Day trying to make the residents’ living space feel like home. Members of Ladies of Leisure pulled together odds and ends from their homes and purchased items from funds raised during our 1st Quarter Shopping Trip Fundraiser. As you can see from the photo to the right, we really had our work cut out for us!! Check out page 3 for The Big Reveal! I have always been able to talk to my female friends about most things—the meaning of life, whether over-the-knee boots are really OK—but I’d noticed, over time, that we often stopped short of being honest when there was a danger of hurting another’s feelings. Conflict can be tough for women; we always want to be “nice.” Grievances accumulate—snubs, slights, sweaters borrowed and returned a size smaller with a red wine stain—until one person says, “We need to talk.” Sometimes that talk can be the last. K. showed me a different way. I made a beeline for her at a party when I saw she was wearing a satin-trimmed tee that I had in my own closet. She invited me to dinner, where she told an unbelievably dirty story about her new boyfriend that made me fall out of my chair laughing. I soon learned that K. is the kind of rare friend who will drive you to the airport, or call you five times a day when you’re going through a breakup. So when we had our first disagreement (neither of us can recall what about), I was nervous to clear the air. And when I did, she told me, “If you and I are going to be friends for a long time, there’s one thing I can promise you—I’ll hurt your feelings; you’ll hurt mine. And we’ll talk about it and get past it.” It was a simple lesson that I wish I’d heard much sooner. That was 15 years ago. Since then, we have hurt each other’s feelings (as promised), but we talk it out and get back to the important stuff—that over-the-knee boots are fine, but should probably be flat and, preferably, black. Aline Brosh McKenna is a writer. Her latest film, Morning Glory, starring Rachel McAdams and Harrison Ford, is in theaters now. Vice-President: Shawn Stewart, Ph.D. stmike98@yahoo.com -Page 4-
