As Ed’s and my year of Presidency comes to an end, we would like to thank ALL of

with a wonderful Board, selfless members always ready to step up and participate, and
now a very enthusiastic and spirited New Dancer Class.

As the new Board Officers are installed the first Monday in January, Ed and I look
forward to serving as Parliamentarians of the Board, the automatic responsibility of the
out-going Presidents. Monday, December the 1st we will elect our new Board Officers.
We thank Joe and Anita McGee and Barbara Bennett for serving as our Nominating
Committee this year. Currently the officer nominees are: Mary and George Lambert
for Presidents, Anita and Joe McGee for Vice-Presidents, Joan and Vic Penacho for
Treasurers, and Lucy Hackett as Secretary. Should anyone else wish to have their
name put forward for any of these offices, please feel free to contact Joe McGee as the
chairman of the nominating committee and you will be part of the nominee election
process.
The club had a very successful Wild West Hoedown, our 55th year of holding this
dance! We had 80+ attendees and we gave away 16 nice frozen turkeys as door prizes.
As the dancers were leaving they all enthusiastically thanked our members for a
wonderful time. THANK YOU to ALL of you for making this year’s dance such a
success, especially Barbara Bennett who worked her petticoats off keeping everything
running smoothly!
This is a very busy time of the year, but we hope to see many of you at the Main
Street Strollers’ Share Dance on the “bouncy” floor up in Placerville. See the flyer in
this newsletter for details. Remember, all you new dancers and returning dancers are
invited and encouraged to attend this dance. Ben, Andy, Alex, Hunter and Colton, you
will love doing your stomps and bounces on this floor! It would be great to see a
square of young adults present at this dance representing our club.
Ed and I wish you all a joyous, safe and happy holiday season and a very prosperous
and exciting 2015! See you on the dance floor! Bev and Ed

Getting to Know
REITA and DENNIS
MILLER
Dennis & Reita met while square dancing in the late 1950’s. They danced with two clubs. The Boots & Bonnets in
San Leandro & the Moonshiners in Castro Valley. Reita played hard to get but Dennis finally won her over and
they were married in June of 1962. After four years they started their family, a son Dale and a daughter Sheree.
In 1970 Dennis, along with two partners, opened a new full service dental laboratory. It was very successful and
they sold the lab in 1985. At age 45, after a very short retirement, he was asked by several dental manufactures if
he would teach some of the dental laboratory techniques he had developed in his lab. Over the next ten years
Dennis taught hands-on courses and lectured on implant prosthodontics throughout North America, Europe,
Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines.
They moved to Pine Grove in 1999. In 2001 they were both shocked by Reita being diagnosed with breast cancer.
After surgery, chemo and radiation, with lots of support from our new bowling league members she is a 12 year
cancer survivor. Both continue to be avid league bowlers. Reita bowls twice a week and belongs to a local book
club. Dennis is an Amador County Master Gardener and teaches their Fruit Tree Culture classes on planting,
pruning and grafting. He is also an Amador County Master Food Preserver and teaches how to preserve Wild Fish
& Game by smoking, freezing, and canning. As an avid hunter and fisherman Dennis is right at home here in the
Foothills.
In January 2013 Reita saw an ad for beginner square dancing classes in Jackson. We immediately joined the
beginners group. We were surprised how much we had forgotten, but it wasn’t long before the calls started to
become familiar again. Just as we were beginning to absorb the new calls we took our 7 & 9 year old
grandchildren on a four month, truck and 5th wheel trip to Alaska where Dennis’ youngest brother lives. Of course
grandpa, uncle, and the kids, were forced to catch a chest freezer full of salmon and trout. The grandkids were
mesmerized to see moose and Grizzly bears right next to our campsite in the front yard.
After this square dancing interruption we started our lessons again. In April, 2014 we graduated and were invited to
join the Claim Jumpers Club as new members. We were very pleased to be part of this very friendly group of
square dancing friends.
In May this year, Dennis’ right knee reached a point that dancing was out of the question. A total knee replacement
was done on July 7th. In mid-October this year Dennis got back on the floor. He wants to thank you for all your
patience in trying to get him back up to speed. Yellow Rock to all of you !!!
