It’s only natural that customers will trust our products when we can trust our products first. As customers’ trust towards corporations builds up, corporations’ growth maximizes. Not being satisfied with just lowering the defect rate, KCC has introduced 6 Sigma in order to aim for a zero-defect business and product condition. KCC is currently stepping up as a world-class corporation through various quality management activities e.g. providing quality-intensification education for KCC partners and foreign KCC branches. Just like the color blue that represents our deep and serene trust and confidence, KCC will endeavor to become a more reliable company through continuous challenge and quality management. Blue KCC HIGHLIGHT Story Consistent Quality leads for Product Reliability As the quality management goal for 2015 is to set up “Quality system stabilization”, KCC has established a quality process in various ways and is promoting programs accordingly. In addition, KCC is not only laying down roots to foster internal Six Sigma(6 σ) belt holders but is also actively providing quality management related education for domestic partners as well as foreign branches to secure quality analysis technology. A Step Forward towards Zero-defects 6 Sigma and Innovative Improvement Activities 6 Sigma is a set of techniques and tools for progressing towards improvement and a 6 Sigma process is statistically expected to be free from defects (3.4 defective features / million opportunities). Through the concept of dispersion (Sigma : σ), 6 Sigma seeks to improve the quality output of process by identifying and removing what causes defects (errors) and minimize the variability between the manufacturing and business processes. The core of quality control lies in dispersion, which refers to the scatter degree. Irregular product quality means a larger dispersion and if this happens, it needs to be reduced by increasing how consistent the quality is. 6 Sigma projects follow two project methodologies. These methodologies, both composed of five phases, bear the acronyms DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) and DFSS (Design for Six Sigma). The DMAIC features the five phases mentioned above to finally complete the innovation process. Meanwhile, the DFSS (Design for Six Sigma) methodology is used when planning for new products or processes that currently don’t exist, from the very beginning to a 6 Sigma level. Management and innovation is important in order for companies to survive and thrive. Management prevents inappropriate things from happening while innovation is an activity that creates positive change. In order to turn a corporate culture into an innovation centered corporate culture, the actual work sites need to autonomously discover any significant items that require improvements while the management group needs to promote projects that can help to achieve management goals. The sequential execution of improvement projects makes it difficult to accelerate innovation. Thus, major improvement projects must be carried out simultaneously. And for smooth operation, companies should foster BB (Black Belt) and use them as the leading agent for improving activity. KCC is continuously establishing advanced quality management systems by fostering MBB (Master Black Belt), which arrive as in-house consultants in order to internalize the 6 Sigma activities and secure sustainability. KCC 06 Belt refers to an operation system in which a qualified talent with a certain level of 6 Sigma helps all organizational members to participate and solve scientific problems. Apart from MBB, KCC is sparing no effort to foster BB (Black Belt), the key leader of each project and GB (Green Belt) who are actual practitioners. At manufacturing sites, BB holders take the lead and carry out 6 Sigma projects simultaneously. Since 2010, when KCC started fostering 6 Sigma belt holders in the production and technology fields, the number of in house 6 Sigma belt holders at KCC has been steadily increasing with an extension of 6 Sigma field into R&D. With an introduction of Six Sigma, KCC was able to carry out successful decision making and communication that was based on objective facts as well as establishing a system for collecting objective data. KCC will set up a more secured quality control system with segmented and systemized quality improvement activities. Heading towards the day when the KCC logo Becomes a Guarantee of Quality Quality Management KCC is currently planning and executing a thorough quality control system targeted not only for domestic partners but also foreign branches; so we can grow as one of the global leaders based on secured quality, an eco-friendly management system and a global network. Starting by providing 6 Sigma educations in the Chinese branch in 2014, KCC is currently carrying out pilot programs. In addition, KCC is moving one step closer to achieving the utmost quality by conducting systematic processes while implementing actions such as corrective measures on PPK and complaints. This will continue until KCC achieves a jointly established goal with domestic partners. Likewise, with segmented and systemized quality improvement activities, KCC will set up a more secured quality control system and continue to spare no effort in adding quality improvements to its technological development in order to leap forward as a world-class company. DEFINE CONTROL IMPROVE 2015 July 07 MEASURE ANALYZE KCC HIGHLIGHT Interview SONG JEONG HO Jeong-ho Song, Manager of Jeonju Plant 2_Process Development Department Leading quality innovation and productivity with Six Sigma The efforts of KCC toward zero defect rate produced a Master Black Belt, the highest rating of Six Sigma(6 σ), also known as the 21st century management philosophy. At the Jeonju Plant 2, I was able to meet Manager Jeong-ho Song, a 6 Sigma MBB (Master Black Belt) who is creating KCC's own new standard of process improvement that goes beyond product measurement, analysis, improvement, and management. KCC 08 Following this, Manager Song introduced the case that successfully overcame the challenge of increasing the hourly production of acrylic powder coating by twofold. The challenge was about improving Capa by optimizing the existing equipment and process without additionally building an extra line while maintaining an equivalent or better quality. As a result, KCC’s acrylic powder coating maintained superior quality over competitors and achieved growth in sales, which enabled successful handling of rapidly increasing customer orders. 6 Sigma can be described as an improvement tool leading zero defect rate. It is a methodology that systematically resolves problems such as reviewing which process among product manufacturing processes needs improvement and what method should be used to induce improvement. This becomes the standard of all improvement processes that lead equipment relocation by improving equipment design and process conditions, and analyzing the process flow in order to improve quality and productivity. “I was first introduced to 6 Sigma when I was working as a team member of Big-Y, which is a large-scale innovation project that resolves key issues of each plant in connection with management strategies. Big-Y resolves problems by receiving consultation from 6 Sigma MBB (Master Black Belt) at each plant. During this process, I learned the process of setting goals and how to make improvements, and naturally acquired 6 Sigma GB (Green Belt).” Manager Song acquired improvement tools necessary for business since being in charge of powder and EMC process improvement tasks. This enabled him to acquire BB (Black Belt) and finally he was able to obtain the highest certification MBB. Since then, as a process improvement master at Jeonju Plant 2, he is continuing improvement tasks by comprehensively overseeing various product groups such as architectural/automotive paint, powder coating, resin, and EMC. Steps toward integration of in-company technology and patent application Although Manager Song has figured out almost all of the equipment processes at the Jeonju Plant 2 during his 3 years of improvement work, he did not stop here. He is working hard in the field by visiting various KCC plants to learn their equipment and processes and is sparing no efforts in integrating the knowledge to improvement processes. “Although the items in each plant are different, when I can understand the equipment and processes, there are many technologies that can be applied to issues at my plant and I can get inspiration for new ideas that allows me to incorporate new knowledge to the existing technology and create new technologies. This is why, through forums or cooperation from process improvement divisions of other plants, I observe other processes, learn their techniques and utilize them in improvement processes. I am trying to create new ideas through convergence.” The efforts of Manager Song to introduce new technologies, develop equipment design through self-assessment and achieve one patent application every year are to effectively chase two rabbits, best quality and production improvement, at once. This is the reason why we look forward to KCC’s tomorrow and a brighter future. MBB, changing the way of thinking “After acquiring MBB, the way I think has changed a lot. By having a broader perspective on each phenomenon and by clarifying and specifying problems, I always tend to think of the principle or cause of occurring issues. While the most difficult task of the Process Improvement Division is finding the problem and cause of the problem, 6 Sigma became the foundation of such logical thought process and analysis method.” 2015 July 09 Market Trend KCC is continuously releasing products that are satisfying to both constructors and customers through product development that ensures the use of various material properties. Eco-friendly & Fire-resistant High-performance Ceiling Materials Recently, due to the development of the internet, consumers now require higher quality ceiling materials and even its market trend highly depends on them. Let’s find out about KCC’s newly released GYPSUMTEX and 2015 ceiling material trend. By Soo-bum Kim / Marketing Team Eco-friendly Ceiling Materials ate beautiful atmosphere with various designs and patterns. On the strength of the printing technology, products in various designs were released. Eco-friendly inks were applied and patterns were diversified by adding exquisite expressions. Also, creative products with certain company’s logos, brands or character on them were released. Likewise, the ceiling material market is grabbing the consumer’s attention with emotional marketing according to consumer’s desire for luxurious design. Ceiling materials change in structures according to the type and size of buildings. But there are common architectural elements such as sound absorption, fire resistant and eco-friendliness in which must be satisfactory to users. Materials and products depend on the kind of element that users focus on. In the past, a gypsum cement type of tex product was mainly used. However since 2000, an increasing number of consumers have asked for various types of eco-friendly ceiling materials. For this reason, KCC released a gypsum cement tex product with formaldehyde concentration function which was developed in a way that removed harmful substances while maintaining the good properties of gypsum cement. Thanks to KCC’s quick response, building material manufacturers could overcome a long business recession and started releasing GYPSUMTEX that reflect consumer’s diversified preference as well as having excellent recyclability, thus supporting eco-friendly green buildings. KCC Releases Non-Combustible GYPSUMTEX Meanwhile, KCC is also making a move on releasing non-combustible products as an increasing number of people are becoming well aware of the importance of building materials being non-combustible and performing after several recent fire outbreaks. Non-combustible products are not only fire resistant but also prevent moisture, salt and corrosion due to the special treatment on its surface. As part of KCC’s efforts to satisfy the society and customer’s needs, GYPSUMTEX was released in July 2015. GYPSUMTEX is a recreated ceiling material made by taking advantage of gypsum’s excellent finishability. It has an excellent non-combustible, heat and sound insulation performance while being superior in design and constructability. There is no doubt that KCC will continuously release products that are satisfying to both constructors as well as customers through its product development that ensures the use of various material properties. Diversifying Ceiling Material Designs Eco-friendliness came to the forefront in the ceiling material market due to the current trend of putting a priority on resident’s health. KCC’s ceiling materials MITONE and MITEX are steadily maintaining their popularity as optimum products to apply in luxurious buildings as they are not only eco-friendly, absorb noises but can also creKCC MITONE creates luxurious ceilings. KCC 10 2015 July 11 Market Product Meet KCC’s Upgraded Ceiling Material, GYPSUMTEX! KCC’s ceiling material, with over 30 years of history, stands at the forefront of the ceiling material market. Following with MITONE, MITEX and AMITEX, KCC developed GYPSUMTEX. This ecofriendly fire-resistant ceiling material is light and is easy to cut into the desired shape and size. By Jung-il Choi / Daejuk-Gypsum board Technical Division Construction and architecture consists of various elements such as steel frame, concrete and even finishing materials. Out of these, ceiling material is one of the major finishing materials that plays an important role in giving the final touch to interior design while also protecting building’s frame. Some products even absorb noises, creating a peaceful environment. The development of architectural technology has led consumers to naturally look for higher quality products and this has also affected the ceiling material industry. KCC’s ceiling material, with over 30 years of history, stands at the forefront of the ceiling material market. KCC initiated its ceiling material business in 1977 and now has a wide range of products in its lineup, including MITONE, MITEX and AMITEX. Each product meets various standards such as ecofriendliness, fire-resistant, sound absorption performance, etc. And as of July, KCC opened another chapter with the release of GYPSUMTEX. Just like AMITEX, GYPSUMTEX is aimed at the popular ceiling material market and is light, easy to cut, ecofriendly and fire-resistant. Excellent Quality Originating from Gypsum board KCC’s GYPSUMTEX is developed to be suitable for variJust like AMITEX, GYPSUMTEX is ous types of facilities such as offices, schools, hospitals, factories, etc. Gypsum board, which is the main ingrediaimed at the popular ceiling material ent for GYPSUMTEX doesn’t contract or change in shape market and is light, easy to cut, ecoeven if the temperature or humidity changes. friendly and fire-resistant. It is also noteworthy how eco-friendly it is. The kind of gypsum board used in making KCC’s GYPSUMTEX is made with Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) Gypsum and has received the highest level in HB grading, proving that users don’t need to worry about harmful substances. KCC put special effort into improving the gypsum board’s performance as a ceiling material while also keeping all the advantages of gypsum board because GYPSUMTEX, being the final finishing material, needs to meet strict quality standards. GYPSUMTEX’s pattern and texture depends on the weight deviation of gypsum board while painting and chamfering quality depends on the thickness deviation. So, minimizing the deviation of gypsum board’s weight and thickness was the main challenge for KCC. KCC’s eco-friendly ceiling material GYPSUMTEX was released in July. KCC 12 2015 July 13 There are various types of KCC’s ceiling materials according to each use and space. KCC MITONE has a luxurious design and is easy to construct. For this challenge, KCC adjusted the gypsum board’s density to be light but still maintain its high strength at the same time through the CD-Tech. Plus, GYPSUMTEX can be easily cut, even with a knife, while securing space efficiency. Considering even the Smallest Unit As ceiling material’s design can only be judged with the naked eye, visual elements should be considered more delicately when designing ceiling materials. For instance, producers should check if the ceiling material blends well with the space and also make sure that the patterns and colors are natural. When there is only one or two plates, users might not realize visual difference as much. However, they will notice a big difference once they see tens and hundreds of them being constructed all together. KCC reviewed the design numerous times just to make samples and it took many months to adjust GYPSUMTEX’s unique color and texture even with the most basic pattern Fissured. In addition to this, KCC focused on designing large sized products (450×900mm) that are larger than existing ones as they give a bold and luxurious look. Wider Selection for Customers! There are various types of KCC’s ceiling material including MITONE, MITEX, AMITEX and etc according to each use and space. First of all, MITONE, a high-class ceiling material with various designs and high performance, is usually applied for hotels, hospitals, offices and other spaces that require luxury. Meanwhile, MITEX has excellent sound absorption and insulation performance as it has an inorganic fiber base. MITEX is praised by many as it has just as fine of a quality as MITONE and can be easily constructed. Lastly, AMITEX, which is made mainly with gypsum and cement, is highly resistant to corrosion, durable and humid resistant. Therefore, it is widely used in many industrial spaces like offices, factories and etc. In addition to this, with the release of GYPSUMTEX, KCC’s ceiling material now consists of four types. KCC will do its best for GYPSUMTEX’s successful launch in the market, walking the path of MITONE, MITEX and AMITEX. It will also develop various patterns and continuously support technical development so that builders can work at sites more easily. Leading Communication with Every Diligent Step Jong-in Kim, the CEO of Heungil Co., Ltd. (Heungil), is well known by his neighbors for his diligence. As the third generation owner, he continues the efforts to further advance Heungil, keeping to the corporate philosophy of “review the old and learn the new”. I was able to listen to the story of Heungil that is continuing its legacy with a strong family bond. Kim Jong In Closer to Customers with KCC The early morning of Songjeong-dong, Seongdong-gu, is awakened by the sound of rattling. The noise is coming from none other than Heungil. Because Heungil transports construction materials everyday regardless of the awful weather like pouring rain or snowstorm, it is well known for being the most diligent company in Song jeong-dong. Heungil has been a long time partner of KCC and has continued its relationship as a distributor of KCC’s interior and exterior construction material for more than 20 years. And this year, Heungil is celebrating its 40th anniversary. “When the company was founded, I jumped in the business after my father without even knowing what a gypsum board is. And learning from him, I often had to endure his scolding. But, after many years, I have become the CEO of Heungil. Now, I am leading Heungil with my dependable daughters by my side.” Heungil shows high level of trading records that exceed the expectation of KCC each year because it doesn’t depend on large sporadic sites but continues trading with small customers. Heungil was able to confidently request to be selected as an official distributor of KCC about 20 years ago because it had created a firm foundation of customers since the founding of the company. Jong-in Kim, CEO of Heungil (left), and Hyuk-jae Jang, Employee of Construction & fabricating sales department at KCC Seoul Branch Office. Heungil talked about products through direct conversations with customers in the past, but it now uses diverse methods of communication by even operating blogs. Through consistent communication with customers, Heungil was rewarded the title of a power blogger. “The product that the customers who visit our blogs find most curious is MITONE, which is equipped with superior properties all around. The biggest advantage of MITONE is sound absorption and this is why it is ideal for offices which generate a lot of indoor noises, hospitals which require quiet space, department stores, etc. In addition, because it maintains a constant room temperature by having relatively high thermal resistance compared to other materials, it is an eco-friendly product that also helps to save energy. Most of all, because it is lighter than cement-based ceiling materials, it is easy to transport and handle, and it can also reduce the load of buildings.” I was able to feel the parent’s care for their children as CEO Jong-in Kim didn’t miss even a small detail of his products despite handling a wide variety of construction materials that are different in many ways such as property and usage. Boasting its Firm Status, KCC’s Ceiling material The history of Heungil can be divided into before and after the meeting with KCC. Prior to meeting KCC, it was successful in securing stable customers but didn’t have a dependable source of supply. CEO Jong-in Kim who began the relationship with KCC through such reasons reminisced about AMITEX, which was the first sale of KCC’s product. “AMITEX is a ceiling material that has received the best rating (acquired HB mark) as an eco-friendly construction material by the Korea Air Cleaning Research Association. Because it is made with a blend of gypsum and cement, it is highly durable and easy to work with. This is why it is easily seen in offices, schools, shopping centers, subway stations, or underpasses. Also, because it is a safe non-flammable product and has excellent resistance to moisture, it is a widely loved ceiling material.” “GYPSUM TEX” with Luxurious Design and Easy Construction “I have big expectations for KCC’s GYPSUMTEX that is to be launched in July. Because I know the technology of KCC, I am looking forward to it that much more. As I’ve been told GYPSUMTEX is made to maintain the excellence of high quality ceiling material MITONE at a more reasonable price, I believe it is going to be a product that will make its mark in the ceiling materials market.” Heungil opens a variety of communication channels toward new customers while not forgetting the value of existing customers. I am looking forward to the road ahead of them. 2015 July 17 Our Outstanding Technology Prime Plus Clear KCC’s Prime Plus Clear serves as an upgraded version of the Prime Clear product series. This product series is designed to allow users ease in application and even more control to expert users and novices alike. Completes Automobile’s Luxurious Exterior KCC’s Prime Plus Clear applied to automobile exteriors coats the metallic surface smoothly while minimizing the car body defects. Let’s take a look at KCC’s Prime Plus Clear, an eco-friendly product that observes the VOCs regulations. By Hyun-yang Kwon / Metal_Plastic Research Center Clear Coat Completes an Automobile’s Luxurious Exterior An Eco-friendly Clear Coat that Matches VOCs Regulations Auto refinish is used for the repair and maintenance of vehicles. Likewise, an owner may decide to add sheen and radiance through repainting. As a new trend, an escalating number of car owners are seeking out advanced Clear coat refinish. This high-powered yet Clear refinish smoothes on a high gloss or thick coat finish to impart an even more luxurious look to car bodies. In order to keep up with this trend and meet *VOCs regulations, KCC has engineered an advanced-level Clear coat product “Prime Plus Clear”. VOCs, through photochemical reactions with atmospheric nitrogen oxide, release ozone gases, and thus indirectly cause UV heat concentration on the earth’s surface. This atmospheric reaction likely accelerates global warming and impends harm to global environmental equilibrium. Plus,*BTX and Ozone that are released during refinishing with some types of chemical coating cause respiratory diseases and impair human lung and brain health due to the chemical toxicity. For this reason, the Korean Ministry of Environment is sparing no effort in reducing the harmful environmental effect of VOCs. For many consecutive years, the Ministry has tightened regulations concerning VOCs content. In order to meet ever stricter environmental regulations, KCC has engineered and manufactured a highsolidified Clear coat that exhibits a lowered rate of volatile organic compounds. Most ingeniously, KCC has integrated *Exempt solvent into its manufacturing as a way to develop low VOCs paints. Coatings basically fit into two categories: high-solid and medium-solid, each according to its viscosity. TIP *VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) : This is a generic term for liquids that easily evaporate into the atmosphere due to high steam pressure, or gaseous organic compounds. It also refers to materials that generate photochemical smog by creating photochemical oxidizing material such as ozone through photochemical reaction in the atmosphere. *BTX : Combined abbreviation of aromatic chemical products Benzene (B)・Toluene (T)・Xylene (X). *Exempt solvent : Refers to solvents that do not contain ozone-inducing ingredients. KCC 18 2015 May 23 KCC’s Prime Plus Clear completes automobile’s exterior. eye can tell, our product creates a luxurious look as it coats into a thick layer and spreads well all at once. Plus, KCC has upgraded this product’s quality by mixing-in resin which maintains the consistency of quality while minimizing exterior defects. It is very important to ensure a resin’s quality to a certain level since a coating’s quality depends heavily on the quality of the resin. In fact, the resin may determine up to 80% of the overall performance. The wider a resin’s molecular distribution is, the more difficult it is to control a resin’s quality. Such a resin with wide molecular distribution could cause exterior defects when hardening. (Please refer to the graph below for data on this phenomenon.) Now with armed with superior resin-molecule engineering, KCC has fabricated a new type of resin which narrows molecular distribution. This narrow distribution has made the resin more efficient for quality control and defect minimization. KCC’s Prime Plus Clear is the new product cateogry leader for all resin-based paints. As proven by scientific testing and sophisticated analysis, KCC’s Prime Plus Clear is an advanced mediumsolid product that amplifies user convenience and simultaneously strengthens viscosity. The exterior finish matches the level of high-solid products and thereby achieves that level of visual luxury. To put it simply, Prime Plus Clear was created by attaining the various advantages of KCC’s existing coating products: all the best features, scientific and aesthetic all in one. High solid paints are high in viscosity and the thick layer of high-solid paint imparts a luxurious gleam. However, attaining such a finish is not without consideration. Achieving such a thick finish demands much time for it to harden. Meanwhile, medium-solid paints possess comparatively low viscosity, which enable smooth spreading and a fast hardening. On the negative side due to the low viscosity, a medium-solid coating may drip easily when coated over vertical surfaces. KCC’s Prime Plus Clear serves as an upgraded version of the Prime Clear product series which debuted in 2003. This product series is designed to allow users ease in application and even more control to expert users and novices alike. Moreover, from an environmental and human-health perspective, KCC’s medium-solid finishes satisfy the even more stringent VOCs regulations just recently tightened. High-quality Prime Plus Clear In order to cope with VOCs regulations, producers have started to manufacture high-solid products. On the down side, this adjustment has caused some trouble for users already used to handling mediumsolid products. However, with Prime Plus Clear, users can now easily apply high-solid finishes and capture both main benefits. KCC’s Prime Plus Clear retains the advantages of both high-solid and medium-solid paints. Indeed, as your Clear coat applied sample is being examined. Evaluation items 2015 July 21 Training Report Language & Culture Training Communicating with the world with an open mind! KCC is devoted to seeing the potential in employees and developing them into global human resources as much as finding them. Global human resources must have business expertise, global vision and experience, but most of all, the ability to communicate in foreign languages is essential. Especially, because English is an international language that is used as a communication tool by people from various cultural backgrounds all over the world, it is a prerequisite for global human resources. However, no matter how much time you spend learning a language visually, linguistic competency is difficult to achieve without real-life experience and practice. For this purpose, KCC is providing opportunities for Class 4 employees with excellent performance rating and 3~4 years of work experience who have high TOEIC scores but need to improve their speaking skills to go on the Language & Culture Training. It is to provide an opportunity for those with potential so that they can develop into global human resources who can perform business through smooth communication in any country in the world. Those who are selected for the Language & Culture Training program spend 9 weeks staying at our overseas subsidiaries across four countries including the UK, Turkey, Vietnam and China. During this period, the trainers don't assume any staff level. This is to allow them to perform various tasks as clerks in the overseas subsidiaries, which forces them to experience first-hand communication through English at the site and build their speaking skills. There have been 7 employees who had experienced the training. And they said their confidence in English was boosted by staying with KCC’s sojourning employees and the local employees and local employees and expressed their aspirations by revealing their plans to establish continuous exchange and network with them. Let's hear their special stories on their experience during the 9week Language & Culture Training. Yul-bin Choi / Yeoju-Quality Assurance Department The most important thing I had gained from the cultural experience and overseas work was that I was able to relieve the pressure of having to speak English well. There were many instances when I had to contact overseas customers for business and I always wrote emails worrying about grammar mistakes or use of improper expressions. Proceeding meetings was also a big burden on me before. However, I definitely overcame the fear of English through this training. I want to continue to study English so that I can confidently express my thoughts. And heightened safety awareness of the UK employees was most impressive to me. They were very strict on wearing protective equipment under any circumstances from safety goggles to gloves in sections that required protective equipment. I was embarrassed of my negligence toward wearing safety shoes and helmet despite the need for greater caution because I work at a plant. From the smallest improvements such as interval stickers that mark the location of measurement to the largest improvements such as facility improvement, my goal is to find ways to reduce mistakes and increase efficiency. Ji-hoon Jeon / CRI-Resin R&D Center I used to avoid encounters with foreigners, but now I’ve gained confidence through the Language & Culture Training. Because the 3 countries other than UK have their own native language, I worried that they might not understand my broken English before my visit. However, there were so many employees who spoke English well, and I was surprised by the enthusiasm for English education. As I saw the local employees who were very interested in English and were proud of working for a foreign company, it made me want to speak English a little more fluently and coherently. I am very grateful that the Language & Culture Training wasn’t just an opportunity to experience other countries, but an important pointer for my life here on end. In addition, I was able to obtain a new mindset on my work by participating in this Language & Culture Training. One important point I’ve noticed during the course of my visits to four countries is that the employee’s work attitude was very active even though their work environment and characteristics were different for each country. There were many females who were leading tasks, and staff position didn’t seem to matter as much in the UK. I had many thoughts when I saw the employees handle their given tasks on their own and speaking their mind about their own work, and I thought I would also be able to enjoy my work more if I handle my tasks with such attitude. At KCC Basildon, business progress was very fast because employees shared their businesses not only during meetings but also during tea times. The point I learned through the life in UK is that good communication is the key to fast business progress and quick response to issues. In addition, an environment that enables frequent conversations via business not meetings is necessary, and such environment has the advantage of enabling all the members in the operation division to be informed of the current issues and to respond accordingly. I had many chances to talk to the locals thanks to such frequent communications, and I was able to use the opportunities to improve my speaking skills. Because such culture is also necessary at our company, I decided that I should be the first to make efforts to communicate with other teams. Technologies such as silicon emulsion and anti-foam in Turkey and Vietnam and the paint production technology in China that I’ve learned through this training became a big help for me as I am conducting research in resin synthesis. In particular, when I observed the silicon technology of KCC Basildon, I thought the characteristics of silicon such as hydrophobic property, chemical resistance and thermal stability can be applied to resin in order to add high functionality to the existing resin or supplement certain disadvantages of resin. This training was a good opportunity for me to once again ponder which property is important for utilization in paint and varnish in relation to the research on resin. KCC 2015 July Yoon-jeong Jeong / Automotive Parts Technical Team 22 23 Min-hyeong Kim / Personal Assistant Team Ji-soo Jung / Yeoju-Float Glass Production Department Although Turkey, Vietnam and China were very similar, it was interesting to see that the official business department and logistics department were combined, and I was able to learn many things about silicon in the UK. Prior to my trip to the UK, I only thought of silicon as a finishing material for walls, but it was amazing to learn that it was being used in a variety of different fields such as cosmetics, beverage and medicine. Also, the program called BASNET was surprising. Basildon employees use a program called BASNET instead of KAIS, the program we use, and it was very convenient as the specifications, manual, formulation, etc., can be viewed at a glance through the product search function because all the data is stored in the computer. And I was able to learn different cultures through this training. The UK has developed a culture that sets family as the first priority and Turkey is an Islamic country, where 99% of the public believe in God. And in Vietnam, large families live together, being rooted in the Confucianism’s ‘filial duty’ much like Korea. Also, the experience was very meaningful to me because I was able to learn the business of other departments and work methods of different countries (horizontal communication). Not only did I experience their culture, but I was able to experience more practical English by talking about everyday things and business with the locals. Based on the training experience, I want to become an advanced KCC member by understanding the production processes and learning the challenging spirit of overseas employees. Yun-seong Jeong / Human Resources Department Local employees in each country might seem to work effortlessly, but they were very strict on completing their work within the given time and seemed to have a clear boundary between their own work and others’ work. It was especially surprising to see them clearly expressing the work they can do and cannot do. Different cultures of each country were, of course, novel and amazing. Individualistic tendencies were strong in the UK, but to the point that didn’t impact others. And Turkey was very similar to Korea in terms of culture as it also had an exquisite blend of Eastern and Western cultures. Vietnam, maybe owing to the climatic characteristics of the country, showed many of examples of relaxed attitude, including in everyday life. The cultural experience that I acquired during the course of my overseas training helped me in many ways. I worked especially hard to improve my English skills during the 3 months of training, and now after the training, my improved listening and speaking ability is proving to be very useful in work. This training was very helpful in terms of English learning as well as work. I had the chance to learn the recruitment system of each subsidiary by participating in the job expos of each country and it has proven to be very beneficial as I am currently in charge of recruitment tasks. Based on this, I plan to work hard and find the right people for KCC. KCC 24 At KCC Basildon, there is no fixed time for lunch. Many employees take their own lunch and break time, but it was impressive to see that they closely complied with the rules and regulations. The employees of Basildon seemed to have set a clear boundary between work and life, which in turn, naturally allowed everyone to be respectful and considerate of one another. Especially, friendly chats with general manager Ian Smith who showed a lot of interest in Korea was a big help in improving my speaking skills. Also, I aimed at learning about our paint and coat products in Turkey, where there were production lines for all products such as PCM, marine, construction and powder coating. For 2 weeks, I experienced work focusing on the areas of sales, production and management. In the third country I visited, Vietnam, I was able to learn about accounting and logistics, which were unfamiliar to me. From a macroscopic point of view, I was able to observe how overseas subsidiaries were being operated, how it was different from the headquarters, and how the networks were formed. Lastly, China was very meaningful experience for me because I was able to have hands-on experience in unfamiliar fields such as from plant facility management to warehouse management, quality management, and MES. Hye-yeon Seo / Busan-Sales Division 4 I had not experienced other areas of business as I have been working only in the marine sales division for the past three years, but this training allowed me to learn about a wide range of other products. Especially, I was able to understand the overall business in the silicon sector during the month stay in the UK, as well as, gain interest in the silicon-related industry. I think I’ll be able to adapt a little easier if I were to handle silicon or automotive-related businesses in the future. My understanding has also become deeper for not only the sales division but also production and technology. As I directly participated in various businesses such as production site, technology, QC (Quality Control) and management business, I thought such experiences will be especially useful in the sales division, where frequent collaboration with other businesses is required. Another thing I realized through this training is that I need to approach people with an open mind in order to communicate with employees from other cultures. I think I’ll be able to have smoother conversations by using the words and exclamatory expressions learned from the locals in UK when I have an opportunity to work abroad or when handling relevant businesses. In addition, the flexible working hour system that enables efficient use of time according to each employee’s personal situation was very memorable to me. Many employees were able to improve their performance and use time efficiently. 2015 July 25 Tip. How to speak English well 1.Be audacious! The reason why people can’t talk in English is not because they don’t know English but because they don’t speak it. Comedian Young-cheol Kim became a competent English speaker by studying hard without having to study abroad. He said he constantly tried to talk to foreigners and didn’t get too caught up on whether he was using correct English or not. If you want to be a good English speaker, overcome your fear and be audacious. 2.English pronunciation? No worries! Many of us think we have to pronounce English like native speakers to speak English well, but native speakers do not think pronunciation is what determines English competence. As long as the meaning is relayed to the opponent, you don’t have to fear speaking because of your accent. The same goes for grammar! Remember that our goal is not keeping grammar scores to test our linguistic ability but to communicate. 3.Constantly speak out loud in English. There aren’t too many chances to talk to native speakers in Korea. Try talking out loud in English as soon as you open your eyes in the morning until you go to bed. This may feel strange at first, but after 3 to 6 months of practice, you will gradually feel your mouth getting used to the sounds. Then, try talking to a native speaker. You will discover an amazing improvement in your English ability. KCC Zoom In Creating the true owner of one's position through free communication Owner spirit stems from individual's commitment and passion, but it is not easy to maintain this only through one's own efforts. We need to continuously put a lot of effort in inspiring ownership spirit through an organizational culture that communicates freely with each other and develops a bond of sympathy. By Han-tae Lee / Ulsan Plant Manager Owner spirit that stems from self-esteem An American psychologist, Maslow, described the desires of human through 5 stages and the highest desire is self-realization. This implies people feel greater happiness when they uphold their own values and accomplish a goal through their own efforts rather than being acquisitive to move ahead of others. Same is true in the corporate life. In order for employees to actively perform their duties, it is important for them to be recognized for their existence within the organization and feel accomplishment through self-realization. Especially, self-realization plays a very important role in the formation of self-respect. Those who have high self-esteem are able to feel self-satisfaction without succumbing to difficult situations and can freely reveal their presence to others. Owner spirit comes from such self-esteem, and when each employee’s self-esteem is raised, they can finally reveal their appearance of owners who passionately fulfill their roles in the organization. Therefore, in order to bring out true sense of responsibility and enthusiasm, an organizational culture that promotes members to recognize and respect each other must be created. Become a mentor who share and communicate goals Although a strong sense of responsibility and commitment to work can derive from personal tendencies, they are cultivated through true sympathy towards a goal and necessity of work. How can you force people to be passionate when they hate their work. Therefore, in order to awaken the sense of ownership in employees, the channel of communication must be always open in all directions. It is important to share the outcome of cooperation and implementation, and enable a continuous virtuous cycle of such flow. This is why administrators must respect the opinions of junior employees and show interest even in KCC 26 small details and become mentors who can share goals and communicate at the emotional level. In addition, if administrators lead by example in all things with passion, many will express their respect and follow. The growth of individual and organization that create a virtuous cycle At a plant, countless components from the smallest parts to the largest equipment must come together to produce a finished product. As gears of various sizes naturally interlock and turn, each equipment that have different functions must be true to their role in order to finally produce high quality products and supply them in a timely manner. Such principle directly applies to the relationship of an organization and its members. The organization establishes a goal that pursues continuous growth and the members make efforts to achieve the goal, and during this process, individual’s self-realization and growth must also go hand-in-hand. The role of each member is a crucial component in the growth of an organization. In other words, a process where members find inefficient and wasteful factors in the flow of business between themselves and relevant departments to derive the causes and problems so that a plan can be established and put into action must be implemented. This is possible when all employees are equipped with passionate attitude and mindset that enable them to feel pride and responsibility in their work and to create a better future. I believe an individual who has the passion and sense of responsibility in one’s work can said to be the true owner of one’s position, furthermore, the foundation that will build KCC into a global company. 2015 July 27 KCC Topic Dong-wook Kang from the EMC Technical Team made a presentation on EMC related technology in a conference. silicone gel (for SiC chips), as well as the thermal grease which is a new product that transfers heat generated by CPU to the radiator panel and radiator pipe took the spotlight. Also, EMC-related technology presented at the conference by Dong-wook Kang, Manager of EMC Technical Team, grabbed peopl’s attention. As a result, customers who plan to develop moldingtype power modules by using EMC, among the companies that use silicon gels, showed a lot of interest. The participation in this exhibition was an indicator that measured the growth of KCC as a global company and an opportunity to directly experience the increase of our brand awareness. The trend of global electronic materials at a glance! PCIM Exhibition PCIM (Power Conversion Intelligent Motion) Exhibition is the world’s largest electronic materials exhibition held in Europe (May), China (June) and Brazil (October). The Europe exhibition held in May was the largest in scale in terms of size and visitors, and KCC participated in the exhibition for the 6th time by this year. The 2015 PCIM Exhibition became a communication channel for exchanging the latest trends and new products such as power semiconductor equipment and power/electronic materials, and it was a way for many companies all over the world to find measures against the rapidly changing market. Among the exhibitions and promotions conducted by 416 companies worldwide, KCC presented a variety of material products and strengthened its position as a comprehensive electronic materials maker once again. KCC participated in the 2015 PCIM exhibition. 2015 PCIM Reestablishing our status as an electronic materials maker on the global stage At the 2015 PCIM Europe Exhibition which was held from May 19 to 21, about 9,000 participants from 416 companies around the world participated and promoted their electronic material products. KCC participated in the PCIM Exhibition for the 6th time by this year and had the opportunity to confirm its technology and global competitiveness. By Seok-young Kang / Inorganic Materials Sales Team KCC 28 Being one step ahead of the customers' growing demand Other positive effects from the participation in this exhibition were that we were able to raise the awareness of KCC far and wide by conducting sales promotion for new companies other than the existing companies through active consultation at booths and grasp the latest technological trends through visiting and meeting each customer via booths. As most of the major power module manufacturers have released and promoted modules equipped with SiC/GaN chip with excellent high heat drivability, we were able to predict that high power products for automotive actuators and industrial use will lead the future market. In addition, we’ve learned that there needs be a plan which can respond to this outlook in the raw materials sector. By staying one step ahead of the market trends through such proactive responses, KCC plans to develop electronic materials for automobiles with high market interest in the future, and furthermore, transform into a comprehensive electronic materials maker who can provide holistic solutions. Global competitiveness of KCC products reaffirmed Among KCC products, the DCB substrate grabbed the most attention. This is the core material used in IGBT Module which helps to maximize the function of modules by ensuring the efficiency and reliability of semiconductor chips. In addition to this, KCC presented a variety of ceramic products other than DCB substrate such as AMB (Active Metal Brazing) substrate with improved physical strength and Peltier that applies to thermoelectric modules. With this, KCC drew keen attention from global automotive parts manufacturers such as Continental and Bosch besides the existing customers. Also, silicone gel products and EMC products, protective material for memory semiconductors, received a lot of attention. In particular, the high heat-resistant 2015 July 29 Mentee&Mentor Mentor Mentee Manager Won-man Choi & Employee Han-joon Cho of IT Sales/Logistics Team When experience meets enthusiasm As it is true for everyone who encounters something new for the first time, a new employee's perspective is bound to be limited. It is sometimes confusing as if walking through a maze and it is sometimes difficult to see the big picture. This is the reason why an experienced guide is necessary for a new employee, and it is also the background of the creation of KCC's mentoring program OJT. And this is how Han-joon Cho met the dependable supporter Manager Won-man Choi. KCC 30 The daily life of a new employee is continuous learning. Employee Han-joon Cho is also working hard to fulfill his role in the IT Sales/Logistics Team by learning the work step-by-step with the help of his seniors. In order for a new employee to grow into a respectable member of a team, one must know how to properly see the big picture as much as the details of the job. For this purpose, guidance from a man of broad outlook is necessary. KCC’s OJT (On the Job Training) is a mentoring program prepared for this purpose. A managerial level employee provides guidance so that the new employee can obtain a higher level capacity within 6 months. “OJT is a 6 month program that is conducted during the first half and second half of the year for 3 months each. The new employee learns what kind of work is to be done and the overall purpose of the work and guidance is given so that the employee can come along well.” Manager Won-man Choi explained OJT and expressed his expectations for his first mentee Employee Hanjoon Cho. As a matter of fact, Employee Han-joon Cho is more than just a mentee to him. “He is gradually growing out of his student phase. It’s nice to see that he is so enthusiastic.” Employee Han-joon Cho also said many things have changed because of his mentor’s advice. “I definitely feel I have a broader perspective now. From Manager Choi, I learned that fragmentary IT knowledge is not everything in work. He told me the overall business system as well as the role and importance of the team’s tasks.” It’s been only 3 months since he had been placed in the department, and Employee Cho says he was able to engrave the outline of the work in his mind during the short period. In fact, mostly programming seems to be the job when just looking at the work of IT Sales/ Logistics Team, but he said the most important part of the work is communication. This is because if making programs for sales record of stores, logistics distribution of plants, etc., is the first priority, then the tasks of confirming whether the programs are working correctly and are easy to use are also as important as writing the programs. “Recently, several business trips to inspect the management program of HomeCC Interior’s display store were a big help. We visited many places such as Chang- won, Incheon and Gwangju, where I was able to learn how my seniors communicated. I probably would have never learned this if I were just sitting at the office.” At Employee Cho’s remark, Manager Choi calmly added, “There is no better learning than through experience.” He says his role is to induce the mentee to learn by themselves rather than using the method of direct teaching. Synergies from Enthusiasm and Experience “I am often reminded that Manager Choi is a person trusted by many people. Because he always leads the hands-on staff well, the team members have a deep trust in each other.” To a mentee, a mentor may seem like a big and tall mountain. Employee Cho adds that he wants to be a member who is trusted just like Manager Choi. With a bashful smile, Manager Choi reveals his own personal work principles for the junior. The keyword is promise. “From work, I again and again realize that keeping promises is the most important thing. If I don’t keep a promise, it has a negative impact on others. In addition, in order to keep promises well, it is necessary to consider ‘all work as my own.’ It means I take the main role and actively lead.” The strong enthusiasm of Employee Cho and broad perspective of Manager Choi has come together. I wonder what kind of synergies would be created from the meeting of these two people at the end of OJT? 2015 July 31 A Lesson from a Leader Genghis Khan’s Leadership through Vision The hero of Mongolia Genghis Khan (1167~1227) had built a Mongolian Empire that stretched east to west from Manchuria to the Russian grasslands and south to north from India to Siberia, which gave him the title of the emperor who had built the largest empire in the history of mankind. As Genghis Khan conquered Eurasia with amazing domination, the gates were opened to cultural and economic exchanges between the East and the West. The distance between the two worlds became shorter as gunpowder, paper money and post town system invented in China was introduced to the Western world, while Western medicine, astronomical calendar, etc., were introduced in China, among others. This is why the <Washington Post> listed Genghis Khan as one of the greatest historical figures in the last 1,000 years. Genghis Khan was a great leader who conquered the largest territory in human history. He was able to become an emperor who had built an immense empire unparalleled in history because he had a “grand vision”. Let's take a look at the leadership through vision of Genghis Khan, who had created a vision larger than life and given all he had to make it a reality. Moving forward with a “grand vision” Genghis Khan was able to become a hero of Mongolia and a great leader because he had a “grand vision”. This is why his leadership through vision that allowed him to dream a dream that no one thought was possible, an impossible dream, receives so much attention among many of his leadership styles. He didn’t think of becoming the emperor of Mongolia from the beginning. When he was 1 7 years old, Genghis Khan lost his father from an attack by the Tatars. And he was taken as a captive while his tribe was completely scattered. His goal at the time was to only find the scattered tribe members and avenge his father. But, even after avenging his father, he set a grand ideal and goal to unify Mongolia and become an emperor KCC 32 the most needed and right people for the job is within the same context. and ruler of the grasslands as he said, “I cannot die as long as there is work to be done” and pushed on despite many hardships and despair. After Genghis Khan unified the Mongol nation, he did not stop there but rode across the vast grasslands and swiftly conquered China, Islam and Europe. He was able to conquer such a huge territory because in the background he had a ‘common goal’ that was constantly reminded to his tribe members who shared his dream. From repeated battles, he discovered that his tribe members joined efforts better when there was a common goal, and he also realized that people demonstrated greater strength when the common goal is grand rather than a simple or easily achievable goal. Thus, Genghis Khan presented a new goal immediately after achieving a common goal and pushed on together. After achieving the vision of creating a country, he presented a new goal of eliminating the threat from neighboring countries in order to occupy the ruling position. Then, he continuously expanded his goal to the unification of the world and emphasized that the world he meant was not only China but every piece of land occupied by human. Like this, he laid out a big vision and realized his dreams through a common goal. This is the technique of Genghis Khan’s leadership through vision. As Genghis Khan established a grand goal to realize his vision, a company must also have a clear goal to taste the sweet fruit of success. Because without a vision that can bind the employees as one, sense of direction can be lost. The reason why companies regard enterprising people who give their all and participate in the realization of the company’s vision as Dream that came true by being “together” The grand vision of Genghis Khan was possible because the tribe members were together with him. Although an individual’s competence is limited, capabilities combined from many people can exert a greater power through synergy as with the saying, “Firewood gathered by many creates a bigger flame.” Just as Genghis Khan gathered the strength of the tribe members to realize his vision, a company can realize the impossible if cooperation from employees and strength of the organization is utilized well. This is none other the KCC’s people who give their all to realize the vision of becoming “KCC, A top global company with world-class technology” with one heart. Just like Genghis Khan, let’s share a dream so big that it seems impossible. And if we push forward together with the belief that we can do it, there is no vision that can’t be conquered. 2015 July 33 KCC Library Power of execution, the key to a successful company Han Ik-su <The Secret of Innovation> RBPS, the Korean creative management innovation system breaking through the barrier of low-growth Many companies cry for innovation, but there aren't too many that are successful. It is that difficult to create something new through change. However, there are countless companies and executives who strive to make it a reality. Let's learn about the Korean creative management innovation system through <The Secret of Innovation>, which presents a path to successful innovation. By Bo-won Kang / Inorganic Process Improvement RBPS's shortcut to success, environmental change As successful examples of RBPS, the author mentions Daewoo Motor’s Bupyeong Plant and Hanyang Precision. Daewoo Motor’s Bupyeong Plant was reborn as the plant with the highest rating among the affiliate companies of GM just within 4 years of implementing RBPS. Hanyang Precision, which is a small company that manufactures automotive brake system parts and small excavators, also successfully implemented RBPS. Of course, RBPS involves various tools other than cleaning such as ‘Safety Map’, ‘RBPS Map’ which fosters creative knowledge workers, ‘RBPS TPM’ which maximizes facility operating rate, and ‘RBPS Q-Meeting’ which finds the cause of problems and resolve the issues by gathering the CEO/executives/manager in charge and employees when problems occur. However, prior to the application of the tools, changing people to regard equipment as their own and to voluntarily clean them is the most important. <The Secret of Innovation> starts the topic of conversation with ‘cleaning’, which has been emphasized to be the most basic activity and the most important starting point in TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) activity at production sites. The author explains about innovation by citing a phrase in <The Power of Cleaning> by Masuda Mitsuhiro, “The ‘room’ you are living in is ‘yourself’ and when your surrounding changes into a clean environment, your thoughts and actions will change, leading to the change of your life.” The author, who introduced the RBPS (Responsible Boundary Production System) as a Korean creative management innovation system, presents a method to leap forward to a world-class company equipped with sustainable growth. It is about changing people through changing environment and pursuing change in products based on this. KCC 34 Requirements of corporate longevity The requirements of corporate longevity are similar to how people stay healthy. As strong basic physical strength through proper nutrition, stress management and regular exercise, as well as, advance discovery/ supplementation of weak areas of the body through regular health check-ups are the key to a long life, continuous development of human resources and technology that can produce quality products with good functions that can impress customers are necessary for a company to live long. In particular, the author says that an innovation system for effective management must be established and it is important to create a corporate environment and positive corporate culture which become the basic physical strength. Improvement is an endless activity and when it ceases to work, innovation also ceases. Like the advertising phrase “innovate innovation”, I hope we can constantly change, and furthermore, become never-ending KCC people. When a company fails, most people find the cause of the problem in strategy, system, etc. However, if we were to analyze this in another way, the difference in power of execution can be the cause rather than the difference in vision and strategy. At the foundation of a successful company, there is power of execution, which becomes the competitiveness of the company. The power of execution can also be considered as a basic attitude of RBPS. The RBPS management innovation system enables execution to be people’s own constitution by fundamentally changing the thinking of the members through environmental improvement programs such as the habituation of morning cleaning. Based on clean environment and sense of responsibility through the above method, the structural improvement of elements essential to successful manufacturing are maximized such as environment, safety, human resources, quality, productivity, and cost. And through this, the company can move toward the goal of becoming a global world-class company with sustainable growth. As such, RBPS management innovation system that has become the driving force behind companies is also changing corporate culture. The author chose the following as the core value for establishing such culture: ①culture on compliance with the basics and principles, ②continuous improvement culture that involves all the members, ③teamwork culture through mutual trust, ④ management by seeing, ⑤site-oriented management culture, ⑥corporate culture of leading by example, and ⑦benchmarking culture. Tips on consciousness reform that lead to successful innovation ➊ First, create an environment that change people. •The way of thinking of the people who make products must first change. When the way of thinking changes, the language and actions of the person changes, which ultimately changes the person's fate. In other words, creating an environment that enables people to change themselves is the key to innovation that leads to the pursuit of fundamental change and successful sustainable growth. RBPS resembles the tenacity and perseverance of organic farming ➋ Employees with clean minds create quality products. •A clean environment first guarantees employees' health and establishes order and safety, and it easily reveals all issues and wastes. A clean mind is created when voluntary cleaning of each person's living environment becomes a habit. The owner's spirit and sense of responsibility is created in a person with a clean mind and such people turn their workplace into a rewarding job. RBPS is very similar to the organic agricultural production method, which recently has grabbed the public attention. To produce organic agricultural products, no synthetic chemicals including chemical fertilizers, organosynthetic agricultural chemicals, etc., can be used, just natural materials such as organic matter and microorganisms. It is said, the third year is the critical year when converting from the existing production method to organic production. This is why, one’s own attitude and thinking must change to achieve successful conversion to organic farming and one must believe that organic method is the right way. Such belief is also necessary for the success of RBPS. ➌ Vision makes people tick. •In order to establish change and innovation as corporate culture within the organization, a vision that enables the employees to work with a sense of purpose, creative thoughts, and unity and organization is necessary. ➍The key to change is myself. •The key to change must become myself. A leader who leads by example and gradually changes one's surrounding by changing oneself will become the respectable true leader of these times. 2015 July 35 Science Story Virus, the biggest threat to humanity and the smallest living organism The new virus “Middle East Respiratory Syndrome” that was mainly active in the Middle Eastern regions since its first discovery in Saudi Arabia in 2012 is now threatening the entire country of South Korea. It seems new viruses popup ever so often to remind us that they are always around. Let's dig deeper into what viruses are and see when the endless fight between humans and virus may end. Gradually expanding areas of virus activity way around the world to Korea within a matter of days and devastating major hospitals in Korea was a difficult thing to see in the past. In a science magazine <Science> published in 2013, there was a paper that proposed it might be much easier for viruses to spread from London to New York rather than among the cities in the UK. Viruses can easily cross the Atlantic through planes that fly back and forth over the Atlantic dozens of times a day. The simplest definition of a virus would be ‘non-cellular life that can’t live by itself and expands by using its surrounding environment.’ Virus was derived from the Latin word ‘virus’ meaning poison and it is the smallest known living organism to date. Because it is so small, it can’t be seen with a regular microscope, and people were able to see it only after the electron microscope was invented. In addition, the origin of virus has not been identified yet exactly. There are only theories on the origin of viruses, which are ‘regressive theory’ that claims viruses were made from genome and protein that were left after a cell degenerated, ‘cellular origin theory’ that claims a part of cell genome escaped from the cell to create a virus, and ‘co-evolution theory’ that claims cells and viruses independently evolved. Although the origin of viruses is not clear, the important fact is that the ‘active zones’ of viruses are intermixing at a faster rate due to the influence of human activity. The fact that the MERS virus, which seemed to be a concern only in the Middle East, traveling half- Constantly evolving viruses Viruses are very small infectious pathogenic organisms that live as parasites in the cells of other organisms. But, they don’t live in any cells. While there are some exceptions, this is because the structure of a virus’ surface and the surface of a cell must match like a key and a keyhole in order for the virus to enter the cell’s interior. This is why there are viruses that only infect plants and viruses that only infect humans. But, the problem is that viruses are constantly evolving (mutating) to survive. Viruses have developed the ability to change according to the characteristics of the KCC 36 host. In addition, viruses lack the ability to protect their genes because they are so small. This is why they can mix well with host genes but have frequent malfunctions during the process of replicating themselves. The general features of new virus strains are strong destructive power and ability to disseminate. The reason for this is the majority of people do not have the immune system against the new virus. This is why new virus strains have faster penetration power and shorter incubation period compared to normal viruses. Shorter incubation period means it can self-replicate faster. For these reasons, damage to host cells occurs rapidly and extensively and fatality rate is high when infected by such viruses. people suspected of infection, as well as, making hand disinfection prior to entering offices mandatory. Company-wide training and seminars are temporarily postponed and video conferencing is being actively utilized. Some employees who have been on business trips to the Middle Eastern regions have even decided to voluntarily quarantine themselves. However, maintaining good personal hygiene is the most important for avoiding virus infection. Remember the following preventive methods and protect yourselves. Virus prevention through environmental protection and immunity management There are more than 30 kinds of new recent viruses that caused outbreaks within the last 30 years such as Ebola, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Avian Influenza (AI), Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Swine Flu, and MERS. As such, what the human threatening viruses have in common is that the viruses adapted to the life inside of animals have jumped the barrier between species and have spread to humans. Viruses that originally lived in hosts such as bats and monkeys living deep in the jungle gradually became closer to humans due to large-scale deforestation, environmental destruction, etc. The viruses in the wild transferred to human civilization and became new viruses through evolution and mutation. Thus, experts often warn us that new viruses will continue to threaten the human race if humans continue to destroy the environment. However, if the people in the world minimize environmental destruction and solve the issue of global warming, the possibility of outbreaks of sub-tropical infectious diseases such as Dengue Fever and Ebola which become active with higher temperatures can be reduced. Eyes open wide by so many colors! Color&Design Center Design Team 2 Seong-yun Jeong Couple “Wow, look at the rainbow-colored curtains. The colors are so beautiful.” On one weekend, Assistant Manager Seong-yun Jeong and his wife Bok-hyeon Lee who visited a natural dye workshop in Uiwang, Gyeonggi-do, are busy observing each clothing, scarf and bag dyed with natural dyes. As Jeong is told the colors are from plants and flowers collected from nature, his heart is filled with excitement. “It my first time with natural dyes. We applied because both of us work in the design field and this is a great opportunity for us. We hope to get a lot of inspiration by witnessing the process of creating a unique work nowhere else in the world by using the gift of colors from nature.” As they’ve graduated with design majors from the same university, they shared the same enthusiasm and expressed their deep appreciation for the natural dye experience. Their excitement was understandable because Jeong has a profound knowledge on colors as he is an archi- We invite you to the beautiful color of nature! Seong-yun Jeong couple tried natural dyeing for the first time in their lives and fell in love with the beautiful colors. On a day drunk with the charm of colors from nothing but nature, the couple's hearts and day also shine with deep indigo. KCC 38 tectural colorist who develops colors that give identity to specific buildings and his wife who is a graphic designer has a lot of interest in colors as well. His wife said, “I think this will be very helpful for both of us. This is great because I was thinking about a gift for my mother-in-law. I want to make a gift that has delicate yet elegant colors.” and expressed her determination. Before long, the day’s experience began with the description on natural dyeing by the instructor. “There are over 200 thousand colors created from nature. Each color shows off its own appeal as a yellow color may have a hint of green or a slight reddish hue. This is why we classify colors into yellow-type, green-type and red-type.” It was a time for observing different colors that showed a variety of colors according to the material of the dye and fabric. “It’s amazing to see how colors from the same material can be so different.” “Did you say this color used sappan wood?” The couple had twinkles in their eyes filled with fascination. With the decision to make a scarf and a bag, it was time for making designs and patterns before the actual dyeing process. The dyeing technique they will be using is called ‘tie-dyeing’, which is a method of dyeing by tightly tying down the fabric with thread and rubber band. The couple ties down the fabric, relying on their sense of touch. “I wonder how the shape is going to turn out?” They smiled with excitement. Wow! Blue indigo! What a sight this is The colors they will be using today are gold from the flower ‘marigold’, purple from ‘madder’ and indigo from ‘indigo’. Unlike many other plants that go through the heating process to be turned into dye, indigo is especially renowned for the foul odor from fermentation and very difficult dyeing process. But, as the poet Ji-ha Kim had once expressed indigo as a ‘dream’, it also holds that much unique appeal. Maybe that’s why the couple looking at the indigo dye is filled with expectation. “Indigo really is a ‘magical dye’. When the fabric is dipped into the dye, it shows a green color at first but changes into a blue color. See it for yourselves.” The heart leaps with anticipation for a moment. The face is automatically contorted by the slowly rising unique smell. However, this is something they have to endure to create the precious indigo color. The fabric is dipped into the indigo dye and carefully crunched up several times with the hands, and then the fabric starts to show green color. When the green fabric is swooshed in water, the oxygen in water transforms the green color in a bluish hue. The couple is simply amazed by the scene unfolding in front of their eyes. After dyeing the golden color as well, it is finally time to cut the rubber band and unfold the fabric. The fabric flutters like butterfly wings and reveals its skin. It is the moment of truth. The scarf with a blend of indigo and golden color is finally completed. “Oh, my Gosh! I can’t believe the colors and shapes. Indigo is like a deep, deep ocean. This is beyond my expectation.” With the excitement from Jeong, his wife also bursts out exclamation, “It’s like a piece of landscape painting. This part that is spreading out looks like blooming pine trees on top of a mountain.” Soon after when the bag with a blend of indigo and purple color is also finished, the couple’s faces are filled with joy. “When I am working, I usually make colors and patterns that I have already sketched in my head from the planning stage. But, natural dyeing is like colors and patterns completed by unimaginable ‘effect of chance’. It is very fresh and inspiring to me. I think it is going to stay with for a long time, maybe because I made it with my own hands.” His wife also seemed very satisfied. “It was great to be able to experience something different with my husband. I want to try it again next time. I am especially happy because I think my mother-in-law will like the gift I’ve made today.” It was a time that added a more vivid and beautiful color in their lives as they enjoyed the colors of nature. Awakened with new sensitivity of beautiful colors, the couple’s faces seemed to embrace the great colorful memory. This diary probably was one of the reasons how Tolstoy, who lost his parents at the age of nine and was without a single diploma from regular schooling, became a writer of great literature. In his diary, there are records of his disciplines such as “If you have positively decided to do something, do it no matter what” “When you’re doing something, give your best” and “Always read books out loud.” Like this, he jotted down his goals and shortcomings that needed to be overcome, which became a reflection of himself that allowed him to fiercely fight on. In other words, his diary was like a record of intense introspection of himself that molded his personality into a great writer. Not only that, Tolstoy always carried around a notepad and a pencil and jotted down notes whenever he could. Such habits not only became a measuring tool for objectifying himself, but also a foundation that fostered him into a world renowned writer and thinker.
