Metroport Meals On Wheels, Inc. is a nonprofit, grassroots, volunteer
advocate for the elderly and those in need through home-delivered meals,
senior center lunch programs, and other support services.
Vision:
MMOW is Neighbors Helping Neighbors to alleviate hunger, isolation, and
loneliness in our communities, and to foster the independence,
worth, and dignity of each individual we serve.
Dear Friends,
Metroport Meals On Wheels is dedicated to serving the needs of the elderly, frail, or disabled neighbors in our
community, and we thank all of you who help us with our mission. We would be unable to carry out our mission
without the help of a terrific staff, incredible volunteers, donors and board members who give of their time, talent
and financial contributions.
Established in 1980 as Roanoke Meals On Wheels, MMOW is now 33 years young!
The image of a frail senior, alone and hungry, paints a graphic picture. Now imagine a visitor who brings a hot
meal, lively conversation, a smile, a hug — and the picture changes dramatically! With your help we have been
relieving seniors of their greatest fears – loss of independence and life in a nursing home – by providing support
that enables people to age with dignity and live independently in their own homes.
Just imagine a community center full of seniors surrounded by wholesome food, lively conversation, dominoes,
cards, and bingo. That’s the picture of MMOW’s luncheons which are “not-to-be-missed” special occasions
regardless of whether the participants are lifelong residents or new to the community. MMOW whole-heartedly
welcomes any senior seeking a meal or fellowship.
MMOW provides so much more than just “hot” delivered and community center meals. Remembering birthdays
and holidays, bringing treats and surprises, engaging community groups to prepare special favors and gifts — these
are but a few of the added value experiences MMOW and its volunteers provide. Winter and shelf stable meals
plus special deliveries of fresh produce or nutritional supplements make sure there is always something good to
eat readily available. Stockings for Seniors ensure that no homebound senior is forgotten during the holidays.
MMOW’s extra touches make each participant feel special each and every day of the year!

MMOW’s heart and soul are found in the dedication of our volunteers. Their passion for helping our seniors, whether through
meal delivery, senior center luncheon support, working at Sadie’s, serving on our Board of Trustees, or assisting with fundraising
events, truly makes a difference in hundreds of lives every day. Their extra touches, thoughtfulness, and concern are boundless.
Our participants and their families share story after story of the kindnesses our volunteers bestow with gratitude and admiration.
From performing simple chores to remembering birthdays and holidays to picking flowers from their gardens to hospital visits that
give participants the incentive to get well and get back home, our volunteers’ impact is profound and their motivation is love.

Life-Sustaining
Programs
Since 1980, MMOW has used the phrase “neighbors
helping neighbors” to describe the way we serve our
participants. Indeed, it is the heart of MMOW’s culture.
And being good neighbors means most of all, recognizing,
respecting and responding to the individuality of our
participants and our communities. There’s no “one size
fits all” approach for MMOW. We are committed to
providing programs that have a solid community basis
and to ensuring that each of our participants is treated
like a treasured neighbor. MMOW’s ability to partner
with the communities we serve, with food partners within
the communities, and with active community volunteers
enhances the quality of life for everyone.

Fear. Isolation. Aging in place. Food insecurity. Senior
hunger. These are more than industry buzzwords. They
are very real daily issues for seniors. And each word,
each phrase inspired and motivated MMOW’s outreach in
2012. For the past 32 years, MMOW has been alleviating
participants’ fears by providing essential support that
enables them to continue to live where they most want to
be—in their own homes!

Volunteers’ visits brightened lonely days and left behind hot
meals, hugs, and smiles throughout 2012. Volunteers took
time to help with simple chores—taking out trash, bringing
in mail, changing a light bulb—that meant so much to
the seniors. Volunteers remembered birthdays and even
brought treats for beloved pets. In everything they did, they
extended loving care and concern to our participants.

participants who needed Boost, Ensure, or Glucerna. The
continued partnership of Southlake Teen Court made this
program possible.

Community support and loyal volunteers helped MMOW
provide the following services to feed and comfort lonely
seniors in 2012.
• 41,973 home-delivered meals served to 224
individuals
• 30,408 senior center meals served to over 1,200
individuals
• 2,108 meals supplied to local food pantries and
community assistance programs
• 55,000+ volunteer miles driven miles to
delivering meals to participants’ homes

“I was closed in for 10 years after Pat’s stroke. I didn’t
do anything but take care of my wife. I began attending
(senior center luncheons) before Pat died; being at the
lunch took all my pressure off.”

Throughout 2012, wholesome food, lively conversation,
dominoes, cards, and bingo made MMOW’s luncheons
“not-to-be-missed” special occasions regardless of
whether the participants were lifelong residents or new to
the community.
MMOW continued to operate senior center luncheons on
a “No Reservations Necessary” basis and whole-heartedly
welcomed any senior who needed a meal or fellowship.
Birthday celebrations marked milestones and MMOW’s
luncheon coordinators served food that the seniors
loved, flavored with giant helpings of TLC. MMOW’s
luncheons enabled seniors to enjoy being together and to
support one another through friendship, fun, and shared
experiences.

Holiday Stockings for Seniors
“When your shopping bags arrived, tears of joy ran down
my face…. Now we have your bags to open on Christmas
morning! God bless all of our friends at MMOW for giving
us a Christmas!” From Ms. Joanne
MMOW’s Stockings for Seniors program ensured that
the holidays were happy for our homebound participants.
Community participation in Stockings for Seniors not
only made wonderful holiday memories for MMOW’s
participants, everyone involved in the program walked
away with special feelings that came from doing
something to make someone else happy. From the donors
who lovingly selected special gifts, to the volunteers who
delivered the gifts, the corporate groups who participated
in the workplace, and civic groups that embraced our
seniors, to the seniors who received special gifts . . . all
were touched in very special ways.

a garden. I love watching the children out in the garden.
When they bring me the vegetables, they also give me hugs.
The hugs from those sweet children feed my soul as much

Sharing the Harvest created lots of excitement in 2012!
MMOW’s innovative community-based program
developed collaborative relationships with local
school districts, private preschools, senior retirement
communities, local farmers markets, and individuals. It
was extremely well received by MMOW participants and
garden partners alike. MMOW’s garden partners planted,
nurtured, and harvested the produce for volunteers to
deliver. The children enjoyed providing garden treats to
help “grandmas and grandpas” in their community. The
seniors loved having their little gardeners deliver the fruits
of their gardens.
Produce was delivered separately from the daily meal,
thus providing additional opportunities for volunteer
interaction with the participants.
We were truly growing more than vegetables in our
gardens; we were growing compassion and joy of helping
others.
Staples for Seniors & Winter Meals
“I don’t know what to say except Thank You! No one has
ever been so kind to me!“ From Ms. Melody
Staples for Seniors delivered special bags of food
and household supplies to seniors’ doors every month
through 2012. These shelf-stable breakfast and dinner
meals ensured that there was always something good to
eat readily available. This program gave a major boost
to seniors’ budgets, and freed up money that would
have otherwise been spent on groceries to provide for
medication, transportation, utilities, and other essentials.
In early winter, MMOW delivered a special package of
shelf-stable meals provided by Metroport Rotary Club
so that our participants could have several meals in the
pantry if the weather turned bad and made the roads
unsafe for daily deliveries.
Staples for Seniors resonates with our community and has
inspired individuals and groups to conduct food drives for
MMOW’s participants.

Connected MMOW
with the Community
MMOW’s 2012 special fundraising events were
supported by many individuals, groups and
businesses and played an important role in the
diversified funding of meal services – helping our
area seniors receive critically needed food regardless
of their financial circumstances.

MMOW continued our rich golf tournament history
in 2012. With the third decade we strived to offer

DFW Metroplex.
Fashion
Show & Shopping Bazaar
MMOW’s Fashion Show and Shopping Bazaar
provided a luncheon with unique live auction
items and an entertaining show of runway fashions
featuring local dignitaries and supporters while
raising much
needed funds for
our seniors. The
Shopping Bazaar
hosted numerous
interesting
merchants and
options for shoppers.

LINK Award
MMOW presented its
annual LINK Award to
Laura Hill. The LINK
Award is given annually
to honor a community
advocate who embodies
the characteristics of the
LINK Award:
L – Leadership, I – Inspiration, N – Nurture, K – Kindness.
Laura served two terms on Southlake City Council
and has provided support for area nonprofits as well
as leadership in founding non-profits for unmet
community needs. Laura represents so well the
characteristics of the LINK Award and MMOW was
proud to honor her.
Grapefest’s Texas Wine Tribute
Dinner
MMOW was honored to receive proceeds from this
2012 charitable dinner and we look forward to future
years of collaboration with Grapevine Convention &
Visitors Bureau.
The Classic at Roanoke Benefit
Dinner
A beautiful fall evening was the backdrop for the
annual Classic at Roanoke dinner providing patrons
and supporters with gourmet dining, fine wine
and celebration. The generosity of The Classic at

to benefit MMOW food
participants.

Diversified Support Strenghtens MMOW
Since delivering its first meal in 1980, the key to
MMOW’s success lies in its commitment to provide
services build on community support instead of
government programs.
Unlike the majority of meals on wheels programs
across the county, MMOW has eschewed federal
funding and the restrictions it encompasses. Instead,
MMOW has created a diversified funding base to
ensure strength, stability, and sustainability for the
services we provide to our isolated neighbors across
three counties who are unable to consistently provide
for their own nutrition because of medical or physical
limitations.
Coupled with a strong grassroots philosophy and
an ongoing commitment to operational efficiency,
MMOW effectively serves the needs of its
participants and is well positioned to meet future
demand.

What Makes MMOW Unique:
