The Foundation’s flexibility attracts generous individuals, couples, families, companies, and others interested in enhancing the quality of life in south-central Louisiana. Our donor-centric model can accommodate the specific, unique, and varied charitable and philanthropic objectives of our donors. In 2008, the good folks of Louisiana HonorAir honored us by engaging our participation in their magnanimous flights of World War II Veterans; several generous donors established named charitable funds; our second geographic affiliate was established – the St. Mary Parish Community Fund; and opportunities to give back were had through our Giving Back Catalog – a year of solid development for the Foundation. The year was also ground-breaking! Office space for the Foundation has been provided through the generosity of the Moody Family. Thanks to the munificence of Rodney and Cindi Savoy, the Foundation broke ground on its new office building that is expected to be completed by fall of 2009. “Ground-breaking” also was the Foundation’s re-commitment to be donor-centric – increasing giving by making it easier for folks to give. Under the capable leadership of its Chair, Elaine D. Abell, the Board provided direct oversight and direction to better your community foundation. Firstly, all are affected by the terrific market downturns of 2008. The Foundation’s investment oversight proved crucial to ensure that its investments were not a part of any of the scandalous activities recently; more importantly, however, our financial oversight is meant to ensure that charitable funds remain viable so that dollars are available, regardless of fluctuations in the market. Secondly, the Foundation now offers broader investment options that include asset allocation selection. Further, donors can establish named funds but maintain their own investment advisors, firms or banks to manage these funds via our Financial Advisor Program. Thirdly, we reduced our administrative fees to better compete with commercial gift fund and private foundation options. The Foundation ended 2008 with almost $34 million in assets. (As of June 30, 2009, assets exceed $40 million.) This year will be filled with exciting activities. A tentative collaboration with the University of Louisiana, the Lafayette Consolidated Government, and anonymous donor(s) to preserve the “Horse Farm” for the benefit of the community has energized and unified our community. In mid-2009, the Foundation is poised to announce an investment by the Hewlett Foundation into Acadiana to help empower donors and enrich our community. These initiatives, and all of those at the Foundation, are all grounded in a commitment to benefit the nonprofit sector, a desire to servicing the greater south-central Louisiana region, and a strategic commitment to accommodate donors’ specific objectives. report 08 Current conversations and prospective activities are inspiring; Community Foundation of Acadiana’s place in Acadiana’s landscape is assured. Hébert Executive Director Community Foundation of Acadiana artist message I see Nature as the All including man. I see my work as homage to the beauty of an experience-able sense of space and the forms that inhabit this ecology. I mean for the celebration of these forms to be made by hand with organic and industrial materials. The intention is to enjoy the beauty and organic symbolic quality of their content. In a time where man is trapped in a synthetic context created by technology, sterilizing and dissociative in effect, I believe the role of art can be to remind us of the mystery and beauty of our innate context in transcendence with the all. d av i d a l p h a 3 Community Foundation of Acadiana Community Foundation of Acadiana works each day to improve the quality of life in our region. Foundations are just one of many entities involved in this effort on a daily basis. Different than many others, our efforts are grounded in the belief that philanthropy can positively impact our communities. The Foundation believes that as we increase giving in our communities, we make an important difference. We increase a struggling family’s ability to stay in their home. We beautify a park. We make schooling affordable to a dedicated student. We provide food for a needy family. We make Acadiana a better place to live. CFA The Foundation works to connect donors. As people find the causes they care about, they will give more. When a first-time philanthropist understands that his money helped build a playground or a garden, he is proud. We help donors find those causes which they are proud to support, and then we help strengthen their relationships with those causes. We are able to do this because of our strong partnerships and our willingness to collaborate. Community Foundation strives to provide community leadership. CFA stands as a unique vehicle to help accomplish community goals. From the incubation of Louisiana HonorAir to the construction of Ascension High School, many of the projects CFA has undertaken began with a passion for improving the community. 4 Putting philanthropy on the map in Acadiana benefits our community in countless ways. We look forward to helping everyone in Acadiana discover their passion, maximize their giving, and find ways to make a difference. Mission Statement Community Foundation of Acadiana’s mission is to improve the quality of life in our region by increasing giving, connecting donors with what they care about, and providing leadership on community needs and opportunities. Vision Statement To be the recognized leader in matching donors with needs in the Acadiana region Community Foundation of Acadiana focuses its primary grantmaking and charitable services within an eight-parish area (Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary and Vermilion). Through our donor-focused model, we have worked with hundreds of donors and organizations to meet their charitable goals. The Founders listed here are a group of people who believed in the potential of the Foundation to transform the community and gave of their resources to seed the Foundation for the benefit of Acadiana. Philanthropy means creating the Acadiana you wa n t t o s e e by g i v i ng b ac k 10 improve the quality of life in our region Community Foundation of Acadiana is built around the idea that philanthropy can change our community for the better, and by extension, change the world. Their support makes all of the Foundation’s collective activities possible. From small grants to local nonprofits to community leadership opportunities like the Horse Farm, the Foundation’s Friends are the common link that makes each project possible. In addition to supporting the Foundation, these important people form a community of philanthropists. To foster that community and share information, the Foundation offers the following benefits to its friends, beginning in 2009. Friends ($100-$499 annual commitment) Receive our award-winning annual report which profiles Acadiana philanthropists and philanthropic activities Receive bi-annual enewsletter highlighting how philanthropy is transforming our community Receive personal invitations to all public Foundation events including the annual philanthropist’s breakfast and annual meeting Publicized as member in the 2009 Report to the Community and on the CFA website Receive the 2009 Giving Back catalog Make pass-through grants to nonprofit organizations with no fee assessed (ability to make anonymous donations) Have the opportunity to complete the annual donor survey Supporter ($500- $999 annual commitment) All benefits listed above and Receive personal invitation to the Foundation’s annual Founders Reception Donor ($1,000-$2,499 annual commitment) All benefits listed above and Link to your company’s website from the CFA website (or, in the case of individuals, a link to your favorite charitable organization’s website) Benefactor ($2,500- $4,999 annual commitment) All benefits listed above Receive personal invitations to philanthropic workshops as available Philanthropist ($5,000 and up annual commitment) All benefits listed above Appear as “Partner in Philanthropy” on all publications and on website To become a Foundation friend, visit the Foundation’s website at www.cfacadiana.org/friends. 12 Start YOUR Donor-Advised Fund We encourage donors – individuals, couples, families, companies – to establish a donor-advised fund as a powerful way to enhance your charitable giving. Donor-advised funds leverage the resources of Community Foundation of Acadiana—the administrative assistance, the giving expertise, and the sense of community—to enhance your giving experience. They are the perfect avenue for donors of any capacity who want to be actively involved in their giving decisions. Community Foundation of Acadiana is a donor-centric organization committed to helping donors realize their charitable goals. Whether that is help in finding the right organization, the desire to give anonymously, or just assistance with the administrative details in giving, the professional staff of CFA is available to serve you. Simple steps to a donor-advised fund: 1. Contact us for an establishing document (337.266.2145, rhebert@cfacadiana.org). 2. Complete the document and return it to us. Document will include the ability to choose your own investment allocation strategy. 3. Contribute to your fund with a gift of cash, stock, or other alternative assets. When you contribute appreciated stock, you immediately get the full fair market value for your charitable donation, and you’ll avoid a long-term capital gains tax. 4. Begin recommending grants to nonprofit organizations, churches, and schools that you choose – any time, any year. Advantages of a donor-advised fund: Can be utilized as a charitable savings account, allowing donors to budget and plan their giving over a period of months or years Can provide immediate tax advantages while delaying ultimate giving decisions—donors who have a very successful business year may give of those resources over time while realizing tax benefits today Community Foundation of Acadiana’s Financial Advisor Program Community Foundation of Acadiana’s investment program offers the flexibility to customize Organizes and simplifies your giving by providing quarterly reports that offer a dashboard for where your charitable investments go Receive recognition or give anonymously, depending on your preference Benefit from professionally managed charitable assets, and you select the investment pool which reflects your desired level of risk Have the opportunity to continue to work with your current professional advisor your fund’s investment to meet your charitable goals, whether they are immediate or long-term. You may choose to have your trusted financial advisor continue to manage your fund. Contact us for more details about the program. Ms. Arceneaux’s granddaughter has a son who is a hemophiliac. Because of her great-grandson’s condition, her granddaughter had to carry him into and out of their home because they lacked a wheelchair ramp. As her great-grandson grew, this task had become more and more difficult and dangerous. When Heloise Arceneaux heard about the CFA Giving Back Catalog on the radio, she knew she wanted to give a gift. She called the Foundation offices and asked for a copy of the booklet. Hearing her story, the Helping Hands committee voted to build Ms. Arceneaux’s great-grandson and granddaughter a ramp. The catalog featured 39 organizations and their small needs that individuals could give to one another as Christmas gifts. She gave a gift to Second Harvest to fund 800 meals to the hungry in Acadiana, and she funded five nights of shelter for a domestic violence victim at Faith House. One of the members of the selection committee and Executive Director of the Stuller Family Foundation, Scott Brazda, explains the challenges and rewards of being involved in the process. “The Helping Hands Committee received so many worthwhile requests, but when we had to make those difficult decisions, it often came down to providing members of our community with the basic necessities of life. A child in a wheelchair faces enough obstacles—trying to get from here to there, to take part in as many ‘normal’ activities as possible—and we wanted to clear the path just a bit.” What she didn’t realize was the same organization that facilitated this gift would be a part of giving back to her. At the same time that she was giving a gift out of this catalog, someone had submitted her granddaughter’s story to the Helping Hands for the Holidays program. Helping Hands for the Holidays is a joint venture between Community Foundation of Acadiana, Stuller 16 Strengthen Your Giving Impact Giving d eci si on s ma d e to benefi t the diversi t y of the communi t y and i t s need s Kay Doré has a long relationship with CFA. As a founding member, she has long valued the importance of giving back to her community. Kay’s passion for her community also extends to the social services. As a board member of Healing House, Kay is generous with both her time and her resources. The mission of Healing House is to provide support and education for grieving children, their caregivers and the Acadiana community. In 2008, Kay established a donor-advised fund at the Foundation. Her fund benefits many causes dear to her heart, but two of those causes represent the diversity found in the activity of the Foundation’s donor-advised funds. Kay cites a recent success story of why she has committed a part of herself to the organization. Charlie Cantrell, a father who had lost his young daughter, and whose children (Ella and Charlie, pictured above) attended sessions at Healing House shared his story of gratitude: “It (Healing House) provides a place for our children to freely express their emotions and feel validated for the healing steps they make on their grief journey. Due to our own grief, these are things that, as parents, we are not always capable of providing, but with the help of Healing House our children do not walk this journey alone.” Nature photo courtesy of Danny Izzo, Nouveau Photeau Kay is a long-time supporter of The Nature Conservancy in Louisiana. Dedicated to preserving the “last great places” throughout the world, Kay feels fortunate that one of those places is so close to the place she calls home. Cypress Island Preserve, located minutes from downtown Lafayette, is approximately 9,500 acres of beautiful wetlands. A local favorite of nature-lovers, the area is home to breeding colonies of birds and alligators. An area which highlights Louisiana’s best natural features, The Nature Conservancy preserves the property and educates visitors from around the world about its unique qualities. As board secretary of the local chapter of the international organization, Kay is proud that the dollars collected for Louisiana stay here to help places like Cypress Island and other natural treasures across the state. The Nature Conservancy’s current and future plans for Cypress Island include the continued restoration of the 20,000 acres of natural cypress-tupelo swamp and bottomland hardwood forest, the development of a visitor/ education facility, public parking area, picnic area, restrooms, and a short boardwalk using culturally appropriate and eco-friendly building techniques. Funds for the construction project are currently being raised. Heather Blanchard, long-time Executive Director of Healing House, describes Kay as a tremendous asset to the organization. During her tenure, Heather has frequently called on Kay to brainstorm a problem from a new angle. “She always gives her honest opinion, she has great ideas, and she is a tremendous resource for any organization she is involved with,” says Heather. Kay has embraced Community Foundation of Acadiana as a tool to enhance and focus her giving and support those causes she cares about. By placing money in a fund at CFA, she can be deliberate about her giving decisions. And she hopes that by giving through a community of philanthropists, she can strengthen the impact of those giving decisions. 17 Making the connections to help you realize you r p h i l a n t h r o p i c g oa l s 18 connecting donors with what they care about When our donors choose the causes they give to, we want to hear about the things that matter to them. The Foundation helps to strengthen giving by connecting donors with causes that are meaningful to them. Helping donors make those connections, and then providing resources to strengthen those connections, helps solidify our donor-centric approach. As one of this area’s most beloved artists and a champion of the fund since its inception, it seemed a natural way to honor him. Since that time, a group of family members and friends have worked diligently to ensure this field of interest fund has a continued positive impact on the visual arts in our community. The mission of the Elemore Morgan, Jr. Visual Arts Endowment is to demonstrate that the visual arts are significant cultural necessities by supporting, promoting, enhancing and strengthening the visual arts, primarily in south Louisiana. To further the endowment’s mission, funds will support visual arts activities, visual artists, and scholarship, reflecting the passion and life-long vocation of Elemore Morgan, Jr. foster quality exhibitions and programming that will enrich South Louisiana engage existing and new donors to support the visual arts contribute to the cultural life of South Louisiana Elemore’s wife Mary has been critical in the efforts to build the endowment. She challenges friends of Elemore’s and friends of the arts to get involved: “Join us in an effort to endow this fund to help the arts flourish in our community. As Elemore always said, keep your creative juices running, thank you for being you, and don’t just see, but really look at the evening sky.” 20 Photo courtesy of Philip Gould Those people who have been familiar with the Foundation will know that Elemore Morgan, Jr. was an early supporter of CFA. Together with Francis Pavy and Gail Romero, he helped establish the Visual Arts Endowment. Funded through the auction of several pieces of original artwork (by Francis Pavy and Guy Ransonet), the vision for the fund was to build an endowment for the visual arts in South Louisiana. Avenues to Estate Planning Patrick and Elizabeth Little are new to philanthropy. Patrick is the Chairman/President/CEO of Teche Federal Bank, a bank with local roots in Acadiana that has grown into a regional banking power. Patrick and his wife Elizabeth have investigated and utilized many of the Foundation’s various avenues to philanthropy. St. Mary Parish how the Foundation could play a role in their efforts. The result, later in the year, was the establishment of the Foundation’s second affiliate to which the Littles contributed from their donor-advised fund. They also have involved their children, Patrick, Jr., Madeline, and Clara, in their grantmaking. They have annual family meetings, and each child makes grants from the family’s donor advised funds. They are excited to get them in the habit of giving early in life. Ultimately, their children will advise their donor-advised funds, and the Littles expect that their children will be prepared for that responsibility. Patrick and Elizabeth first came to know the Foundation when he was investigating the possibility of establishing their own family foundation. They had been doing some estate planning and wanted to make philanthropy a bigger part of their family’s activities. Many families who want to consider philanthropy consider family foundations. Patrick and Elizabeth realized the benefits of working with Community Foundation of Acadiana. Patrick has become an advocate for the Foundation’s growth. He envisions the Foundation taking a more active role in estate planning education in our community. He sees potential in both the Financial Advisor Program (see page 13) as well as the various philanthropic vehicles available. Also in 2008, Patrick’s company set up a disaster relief fund for its employees, a proactive approach to helping employees who may experience a future natural disaster. They quickly realized that the Foundation could meet all of their giving goals, while doing much of the work that is involved in charitable giving. They established multiple donor-advised funds, named the funds in their wills, and have given (and contributed again) from those funds frequently. As their familiarity and experiences with the Foundation increased, the Littles realized additional ways the Foundation could help improve their community. Last year, they took a leadership role in the development of the St. Mary Parish Community Fund, hosting a luncheon in their home to help educate a group of people who care about The Foundation and the Little family have joined together, and by connecting them with different avenues to philanthropy, they have increased their giving—bringing philanthropy to their community, their business, and their family. 21 Guiding our community to its highest standards and a better future t h r oug h c h a r i ta b l e c o m m i t m e n t 22 providing leadership on community needs and opportunities Opportunities and needs come in all shapes and sizes. Leadership to move those opportunities and needs to the next level is an integral role of the Community Foundation of Acadiana. Tom inspired us with his generosity, humility and genuine compassion for youngsters from impoverished families who are eager to learn. His willingness to step away from a family business that has become a national brand (H&R Block) so that he could commit his life to educating these children is nothing short of exemplary.” In 2008, Community Foundation of Acadiana inspired many with its commitment to share the role of philanthropy in creating the Acadiana we all want to see. This message was best exemplified by the life of Tom Bloch. The Foundation partnered with The Independent Weekly to share Tom’s story with the Acadiana community. His message, “From success to significance: the role of philanthropy in building great communities,” was an inspiration to all who heard him last September. Community Foundation of Acadiana hopes to continue to inspire those in this community to give more, both of themselves and of their resources. Tom Bloch is the son of the founder of H&R Block, Henry Bloch. After spending 19 years in the family business, including serving as the CEO of the company, Mr. Bloch left the business world to devote his life to education. He became an inner-city teacher in Kansas City, and he later began his own charter school. Since leaving H&R Block in 1995, he has devoted his second career to giving back. In addition to overseeing the operations of University Academy (the charter school he helped begin), in 2008, he served as the Chairman of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. Raymond Hébert, the Foundation’s Executive Director, praised The Independent for their efforts to bring Tom to Acadiana: “The partnership with The Independent allowed Tom’s message to be shared with an audience much larger than the one the Foundation might typically reach. They have a dedicated readership, and their lecture series is so well supported in this community. We were grateful that The Independent understood how powerful the message of philanthropy can be and that they were willing to bring Tom here. The event was a success for everyone involved, and our challenge as a Foundation is to continue to highlight Tom’s message: philanthropy really can help us build an even better community.” Cherry Fisher May, The Independent Weekly’s publisher, shared this message regarding Mr. Bloch’s visit: “Tom Bloch’s presentation was one of the highlights of our 2008 Lecture Series. The parish does not, however, have a broad-based organization such as the St. Mary Parish Community Fund which was recently formed to assist contributors having an interest in St. Mary Parish in directing gifts or grants to local institutions as they may select.” Lippman also recognized that the St. Mary Fund’s affiliation with Community Foundation of Acadiana, an organization widely recognized for its accomplishments throughout south Louisiana, affords it the opportunity to provide maximum flexibility to its donors. As an affiliate, the St. Mary Parish Community Fund uses the resources, infrastructure and professional management of assets of Community Foundation of Acadiana while focusing attention on growing philanthropy in St. Mary Parish. Photos courtesy of Cajun Coast Visitors & Convention Bureau 2008 was a busy year for the organizing committee. After watching the success of the Iberia Parish Enhancement Fund from their adopted community of New Iberia, Patrick and Elizabeth Little felt that a similar fund could help St. Mary Parish as well. They engaged other community leaders, both those who had since left the parish and those who still reside there. The group held a couple of events in 2008, on both the east and west side of the parish, to drum up support for the cause. The St. Mary Fund has been extremely well received both by St. Mary Parish residents and those who have interest in the welfare of charitable institutions in St. Mary Parish. The fund marks the second geographic affiliate for CFA, following the establishment of the Iberia Parish Enhancement Fund in 2007. The fund is currently building an endowment and hopes that philanthropists with ties to St. Mary Parish will give for the improvement of St. Mary Parish. Al Lippman, one of the organizers, is passionate about the potential for his parish that is realized by the establishment of the fund. “St. Mary Parish is indeed fortunate to be the home of numerous and excellent educational, civic, religious, and other charitable nonprofit entities, each receiving contributions and providing specific ser- For updates and more information about the St. Mary Parish Community Fund, visit www.cfacadiana.org/stmaryparish. 25 fina Assets and Grants Community Foundation of Acadiana continues to build the philanthropic assets for this region.
