Trevallyn Students Sew Convict Bonnets
Our school has been involved in an activity to recognise female convicts.
The ’Roses from the Heart’ project is the initiative of Dr Christina
Henri, artist in residence at the Heritage Museum Hobart.
For almost a decade artist, Dr Henri has worked on the Bonnet
Project to raise awareness of the story of 25,566 women who were
transported to Australia. Schools state-wide have been participating
in this project and ultimately the convict bonnets will number over
25,000 to represent each of the female convicts transported to
Australia.
They will all become part of a memorial to honour the contribution
made by female convicts to our early settlement prior to 1853. A group of Trevallyn Primary students have been participating in the
creation of a bonnet to acknowledge one of the female convicts.
Twice a week over several lunchtimes the ‘Convict Bonnet’ group
have worked hard with Mrs Walker and community facilitator Helen
Wills to decorate and sew bonnets while learning a little about female
convict lives.
These students have also been invited to wear their bonnets at a special
celebration at St Andrews Uniting Church, Evandale on Sunday 18
September 2016 which will be attended by Her Excellency, Professor,
Governor of Tasmania the Honourable Kate Warner A.M.
Congratulations to the following students for their participation
in this project: Taylor Kearnes, Tess Hume, Ava Crothers, Ivy Lake,
Carla Bentley, Ashlee Scott, Sienna Eastley, Jayla Davis,
Holly Millwood, Elloise Baldwin-Case, Alyssa McPharlin, Zara Tiffin,
Daisy Barbour and Sophie Watson.
