Mrs Fotoula Reynolds
commenced her association
with Burwood Heights Primary
School as a parent of two
children but soon became a
member of School Council and
then School Council President.
Mrs Reynolds’s association
continued as a valued member of staff for the last
three years and added much to our school through
her support of students with their learning. Mrs
Reynolds has taken the opportunity to work in the
independent sector from the commencement of
Term Three. I’m sure we will not lose contact and
on the days she is not working, we welcome her
back to chat and share morning tea with us.
On behalf of staff and the school community I wish
Mrs Reynolds all the very best in her new venture
and thank her for her service to the Burwood
Heights School Community.

Mrs Denise Cooper will be on leave for six weeks
and during her absence Ms Nadia Butta will be
assuming her responsibilities.
Mrs Mindi Bakopanos will also be on leave for
the term and Mrs Sue Barclay will be her
replacement.
We will welcome back Mrs Kerry Green from
leave at the beginning of Term Three. Mrs Green
will resume the teaching responsibilities of the class
Ms Jessica Webb has so capably fulfilled during her
absence. Ms Webb will remain on staff.
VICTORIA THE EDUCATION STATE
CONSULTATION PROCESS
Last week the Victorian Government commenced a
two-month consultation on how we can make
Victoria the Education State. The consultation paper
outlines some of the current key initiatives to build
the Education State; Victoria’s key challenges and
strengths and opportunities to deliver on the
Education State. You will need to read the
consultation paper if you wish to have a say in this
consultation process. There will be sessions held
across the state through June and July and also you
can join the discussion online. If you wish to
register to attend a session as well as post an online
comment

In order to keep our school secure it is
incumbent upon us all to be vigilant at all times.
Unwanted visitors to the school should be reported
to the police immediately. We employ the services
of a security company to patrol the school at night
however it is clear that this is not sufficient.
Please help us to keep our school safe from
vandalism. Report intruders to the police. No
one should be on the school property when the
school is not operating.

SCHOOL PRODUCTION
We are thrilled with the level of
enthusiasm, commitment and interest
already displayed by the students.
We are truly amazed at the talent and
dramatic sense students have demonstrated during
rehearsals. Our marvellous cast is working hard on
dialogue and songs in order to present a great show
for our community in August.
Mrs Whiteoak is working extremely hard to ensure
that this performance is of the highest standard and
that all students thoroughly enjoy the experience.
Work on sets, props and costumes are well
underway, and the excitement is in the air. Not
long to go now!
GARDEN ANNEX
There is a member of our community who is
writing quite abusive letters to the school regarding
the Garden Annex and, in particular, the animal
enclosure and care of the animals.
If a person is not prepared to put a name to his/her
writing then there can be no response.

CAMPS, SPORTS AND EXCURSIONS FUND
(CSEF)
The Department of Education has announced that
there may be financial assistance available for
families who hold a valid means-tested concession
card or are a temporary foster parent. The
allowances will be paid to the school to use towards
expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting
activities for the benefit of your child. For primary
school students the annual amount is $125.00 and
for secondary school students it is $225.00.
HOW TO APPLY
At School Council on 16th
June, it was agreed that from
the first day of Term Three,
2015, we would implement a
name change to the current
Levels.
Level One will be referred to as Prep.
Level Two will be known as Junior school; Level
Three as Middle School and Level Four as Senior
School.

2016 SCHOOL NUMBERS
It is that time of year when schools are preparing
for the following year and student numbers are
critical to the school’s staffing structure. For many
of you it must seem very early in the year, but for
schools it is imperative that we have knowledge of
numbers for staffing and other resources.
I would ask you to please complete the required
Student Admission Enrolment Form if you intend to
enrol a new student at Burwood Heights Primary
School in 2016. This form is available from the
main office or on the school’s website. It can be
forwarded by mail if requested.
We would like to have this information by the
beginning of June if possible.
If you are aware of any families who may live near
you and have not enrolled, would you please advise
them of this timeline?
The Fundraising Committee is planning a Trivia
Night for early September and we need your help to
source donations/prizes for the night.
If you know of any business that we could approach
for a donation, please leave the name of the
business, a contact name (if known) and the address
at the office. Prizes/donations could include
hampers, tickets to events, clothes, restaurant meals,
gym passes, beauty items, services for cars anything that may be useful to a family!
If you run a business and would like to donate a
prize, please let us know!

Bonjour!
On Friday 19 June, Burwood Heights Primary School celebrated Bastille Day.
It was a fun-filled day where students dressed up in French-themed costumes
of blue, white and red to celebrate French National Day.
The students experienced an entertaining French Music Show ‘C’est Si Bon’
and learnt many French songs and dances.
Congratulations to the Level Four students for creating their own French
activities and running them at lunchtime for the entire school to enjoy. The
activities were designed in class and show the amazing knowledge our students
have of the French culture and language. The activities included: French Twister,
French Quiz, Who am I(French words), Capture the Money, French Chess and
French board games.
The Day was a success and thoroughly enjoyed by all!

C’est Si Bon
Tee-ball
Last sport day at Tee ball we played three games. We lost two but won one. We played better each
game and at the end we were really tired. It was a shame that we lost most of the games however we
tried our best and that’s all that matters. All up I send thanks out to all the parents who supported us as
well as Mrs Salvitti, Mrs McGuinness, Miss Eko and Mrs Herdman.

Soccer
It was another cold start to the day playing soccer at Orchard Grove, and then it did get warmer. We tried
our best but lost our three games again. We all had fun and our team showed good sportsmanship when
we lost. Thank you to Miss Webb, Mrs Scurrah and all the parents who walked with us and cheered for
us.

Netball Report
The Netballers had an awesome day playing netball. The weather started off to be a bit foggy and cloudy
but by the end of the day, it was beautiful and sunny. Everyone played amazingly well and had fun. We
enjoyed playing all day and playing in different positions and against different schools. We would like to
thank Sean Pratt for scoring, Claire Stonehouse, Oliver M and Jess E for umpiring and the parents for
coming to support us, most of all, Ms Mason for coaching and preparing/training us for and on the day!

FOOTY REPORT
We were all warmed-up and ready for our first game. Unfortunately we lost our first game. We tried our
hardest but it didn’t pay out. The next game we knew we had to beat this team and we knew we had to
step up our game. In the last 2 minutes Mitcham was beating us. Then Dimitri kicks it to Bailey and
Bailey marks it. It’s in range for Bailey, we knew Bailey could kick it… he does and we go crazy.
We would like to thank Mr Mackie, Mrs Nevin and all the parents and helpers for walking us down and
cheering us on

As we walked to Orchard Grove we felt stronger; we had experience from the last games. We played
better. We played three games again except we were better and everyone used their skills in soccer to
the limit. We like to thank Miss Webb for her help and her effort in training us, Mrs Scurrah and all the
parents who supported us.

Volleyball - Girls and Mixed Teams
Both teams felt good as they headed off for their second day of matches at Orchard Grove PS. The
Girls team found the games a bit easier as they knew more skills and had a better idea of where people
should be on court. They had some success. Everyone tried their best, had fun, showed good
sportsmanship and were proud of their achievements.
The Mixed team found the second day of matches a bit harder as they played strong teams. Despite
struggling everyone tried hard. We would like to thank Miss Andrews, Mrs Charles and the parents who
walked with us and cheered us on.

Tee ball
The tee-ball team travelled to Livingstone Primary School and we went up against three teams.
Unfortunately we didn’t win any games but at least I got to see my team doing their best and having fun
and I’d like to say that I’m very proud of all the girls for doing their very best when playing and for
showing good sportsmanship towards our team and the other teams. I’d also like to thank Mrs Herdman,
Ms Eko, Mrs MacGuinness, Mrs Salvitti and all the parents for coming and helping us. As the Captain of
the Girls Tee ball Team I am very proud and happy for what we have achieved and I hope everyone else

SCHOOL CAPTAINS REPORT
Term 2
This term, Burwood Heights Primary School has done many exciting activities, from Preps learning
new words to 5/6’s playing their favourite sport and everything in between. So keep reading to
hear about what we did!
Prep:
The preps had a load of fun this term, especially when they got to make rockets! It was also enjoyable when they
got to decorate their awesome rockets by putting windows, doors and colourful patterns on them. WaCkY
WeDNeSdaY was a huge hit with the Preps, their classrooms were filled with many weird and wacky costumes!
The Prep teachers are happy the Preps have been practising and improving on their site words.
1/2:
The 1/2’s get really excited when it’s a dress up day. For the first time we had French Day. On French Day they got
to dress up in something to do with France, or they could wear the colours red, white and blue. They have also
been learning about finances, budgeting and the Australian coins. They had four dollars that they had to spend to
buy their lunch. They got to make their own lunch boxes and then all the 1/2’s came together with their lunch
boxes and had a picnic.
3/4:
The 3/4‘s have been learning about Geography such as learning where Australian states and cities are. They have
been focused on learning about Values. Along with learning Values they have learnt how to deal with and avoid
conflict. Being able to deal with conflict is a very important skill to learn in life. For the first time the Grade three
students ran in the House Cross Country, they all did very well.
5/6:
The 5/6’s also competed in the House Cross Country, it was a fun day enjoyed by all. They have also enjoyed a
French incursion and learnt all about France’s history and the French Revolution. Winter Sports was a fun day for
everyone with all of the 5/6’s playing different sports against different schools in our schools zone. This term they
did a project based on interviewing a member of the community and making something that would help them
solve a problem or need that they had. It was very fun and interesting making different things to help the
members of the community.
Overall this term was very exciting and enjoyable with lots of fun activities and dress up days. It has been a
fantastic Term 2 and Semester 1. We are all looking forward to next term when we will have more learning and
our School Production. We hope that you all have an enjoyable and safe holiday.

We have had lots of seasonal donations to the kitchen over the last couple of weeks, which
are gratefully received! Thanks to all who have donated lemons, pumpkins and quinces 
Winter holidays are a great time to cook with the kids. Let them show you their skills and
enjoy the results……
The following recipe made good use of some gorgeous pumpkins this week. Enjoy.
Pumpkin and feta twists

400 g Kent Pumpkin, steamed, peeled, chopped

2 cups Self-raising Flour, sifted

1 pinch Salt

60 g Cold Butter, chopped

200 g Feta Cheese, crumbled

1 tsp Rosemary, finely chopped, plus extra sprigs for topping

1/2 cup Buttermilk, plus 1 tsp extra for brushing

20 g Butter, to serve (optional)
Method:
1. Preheat oven to 220°C or 200°C fan. Line a baking tray with baking paper.
2. Mash 2/3 cup pumpkin. Dice remaining pumpkin and set aside. Place flour and salt into a
large bowl. Add butter and using fingertips, rub butter into flour until mixture
resembles breadcrumbs.
3. Add mashed pumpkin, fetta and chopped rosemary and stir to combine. Make a well in
centre. Add buttermilk. Using a flat bladed knife, stir until a dough forms.
4. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently to form a rectangle. Cut
dough into 3 equal pieces. Roll each piece into 4cm thick log. Place onto prepared tray
and plait dough together. Top with reserved diced pumpkin and rosemary sprigs,
pressing lightly into dough. Brush with extra buttermilk. Bake for 15-20 mins, until
hollow sounding when tapped. Break into pieces and serve with butter, if using.

OSHClub News
After School Care Program
Program Update 25.06.15
Hi all,
This week at OSHClub was Sports week! The children have been having so much
fun being active, trying out new sports like badminton and showing us their skills at sports they already play.
We are very excited for our OSHClub end of term party on Friday where we will be enjoying playing games,
face painting, eating some lollies and having a lot of fun!
We look forward to seeing some of you at the Orchard Grove P.S OSHClub Holiday Program
which both Jessica and Ellie will be working at during the holiday period.
For your convenience we have included the first week’s daily themes in the weekly planner below.
Please remember if your child is attending an OSHClub Holiday Program that you will need to pack them
Morning Tea, Lunch and Afternoon Tea snacks as most of our services do not provide food in the holiday
period. Please also remember that OSHClub is NUT FREE so any items containing nuts will be
confiscated and returned as your child leaves the program.

UNIFORM ORDERS – SOME REMINDERS
A uniform order is included on the back of this page. The uniform orders and money are due
back on TUESDAY 28TH JULY. Please remember that YOUR NEXT CHANCE TO PUT
IN AN ORDER FOR UNIFORM WILL BE AT THE END OF TERM THREE.
SENDING EXTRA ORDERS RESULTS IN PRICE INCREASES FOR ALL FAMILIES.
Please also keep in mind the following –
1. Orders and the correct money (or cheque made payable to Burwood Heights
Primary School) are to be posted into Vicki Fahey’s letterbox, in her room next to
the main office. Please label your envelope clearly.
2. Choose sizes carefully as it is almost impossible to exchange sizes.
3. If your order is late it may not be filled.
4. The uniform shop is for replacing lost or damaged items and we cannot guarantee we
will have all items in stock at all times. PLEASE do not use the uniform shop to buy
goods you know you need to order. If there is a problem in paying for your order
when you place it, please contact the school.
5. There is a limited amount of second hand uniform available. Please see me if you
require second hand uniform.
Once your order has been received, your child will bring home a receipt to acknowledge your
order and payment. Orders normally take 2 weeks FROM THE TIME THEY ARE SENT TO
OUR SUPPLIER that is AFTER the date they are due at school. Orders are sent home as soon
as they arrive. PLEASE DO NOT ASK AT THE OFFICE WHEN THE UNIFORMS
WILL ARRIVE, AS THE OFFICE IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SALE OF
UNIFORMS.
